he Times Higher Education (THE) ranking takes

into consideration 13 performance indicators to provide comprehensive comparisons of the universities
based on the indicating factors.
The 13 performance indicators are grouped into

five areas:

Teaching: This indicator reflects on the learning environment of the university. It is worth 30% of the overall ranking score.
Citations: It takes into account the research influence

of the citations by the researchers of the university. It is
worth 30%
Industry income: This takes into account the factor of
innovation. It is worth 2.5 %
International outlook: International outlook considers
staff, students and research density. It is worth 7.5%.
Research: It takes into account the volume, income and

reputation of the University in terms of research. It is

QS World Ranking
he QS world rankings compare the top 800 universities of the world across four broad areas of interest. They are: research, teaching, employability and
international outlook. The top 400 universities are given
individual ranking positions, and after this universities are
placed within a group, starting from 401-410, up to 701+.
The four key areas are analysed using 6 indicators, which
are given a different percentage weighting depending on the
importance of the factor.
The 6 indicators are:

1. Academic reputation: This indicator carries a weightage
of 40%. Under this, academics are asked to identify the
institutions where they believe the best work is currently
taking place within their field of expertise.
2. Employer reputation: This indicator carries a weightage

of 10%. Employers to identify the universities they perceive as producing the best graduates.
3. Student-to-faculty ratio: This indicator carries a weightage of 20%. As the name suggests, it is a measure of the
number of academic staff employed compared to the
number of students enrolled.
4. Citations per faculty: This indicator carries a weightage of 20%. A citation means a piece of research being
referred to within another piece of research.
5. International faculty ratio: This indicator carries a
weightage of 5%. It accesses a university on its ability to
attract international faculty.
6. International student ratio: This indicator carries a
weightage of 5%. It accesses a university on its ability to
attract international students.

onducted by researchers at the Center for WorldClass Universities of Shanghai Jiao Tong University,
ARWU is one of the worlds leading ranking platforms. The ranking, which was first published in 2003 uses

the Top 100 Engineering Colleges in World 2014.
According to THE World University Ranking 2014, Stanford University, University of California, Berkeley; Caltech
and Princeton University follow MIT as the best engineering colleges in the World. While, QS brings in Cambridge
University and ETH Zrich in the third and fourth position.
In the Top 100 Engineering Colleges in World 2014,
ARWU takes in citations as one of the major yardsticks and

hence ranks University of Illinois and University of Texas

among the top 5.
The USA dominates the list of the Worlds Top 100 Engineering Colleges with universities. Interestingly, most of
the top five spots are captured by American universities
.Other countries that feature in the list are United Kingdom,
