Support Local Small Businesses

Shop owners in Webster, Kirkwood put out the welcome mat
NOV. 29

by Marty Harris

Shoppers are invited to kick off the holiday season by patronizing the many small businesses in the
Webster Groves and Kirkwood area on Small Business Saturday on Nov. 29. With the diversity of the
local shops, shoppers are sure to find that special gift
for even the most finicky on the list.
I think Small Business Saturday is an opportunity for the community to celebrate the holiday season
and to show their support for their local businesses, said Donna Poe, executive director of Downtown
Kirkwood Special Business District. Its really gratifying for businesses owners to have all the people
come in and be supportive on this particular day. Its
very energizing for them.
People are just really excited for it this year, Poe
said. It turned into a pretty big day.
On Saturday, take the time to meet shop owners
and take advantage of the days promotions.
Old Orchard
Small Business Saturday is such a great way for
us to say thanks to our loyal customers, said Jessica
Kester, owner of Verde Kids and a member of the city
commission for the Old Orchard Taxing District in
Webster Groves. Small Business Saturday is always
one of her favorite days.
We are able to do a few little things to say thanks
to people for making the effort to shop small, but we
also hear from a lot of customers about how much
they love Verde Kids and how special they think the
shop is, Kester said. We will have fun activities

for the kids and little treats. We will also offer buy
more, save more specials for our customers.
Other shops in Old Orchard will also offer special
promotions on Saturday. Just over 50 businesses
make up the Old Orchard Taxing District. Boundaries are Big Bend at Lockwood to Big Bend at Dale
Avenue.

Other shops in the neighborhood, like The Clover and Naturally Pure Salon, will offer gifts with
purchase, Kester said. Garland Wines will have a
new collection of French wines and great wine-related gifts.

In Old Webster, 70 businesses make
up the Old Webster Trade Association,
according to Stacie Swederska, owner
of Paisley Boutique and vice president
of the trade association. Swederska,
a big advocate for Small Business

into your community and supporting
local businesses.
In addition to the specials and deals
throughout Old Webster on Nov. 29,
the association is sponsoring a passport which features 10 participating

SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY NOVEMBER 29

To Our Community:
Webster Groves

Thank you for supporting the small businesses

of Old Orchard this holiday season!

We chose to open shops and restaurants in his corner of the world because
of the charming architecture, tree-filled parks, and dedicated community. We
appreciate your support year-round, as it is the only way our unique brick and
mortar businesses will survive. The holiday season is especially important to
small businesses and we hope you will continue to shop and dine local!
Remember: for every $100 spent in locally-owned, independent stores, $68 returns to the
community through taxes, payroll, and other expenditures. If you spend that in a national

chain, only $43 stays here. Spend it online and nothing comes home. (Source: the 3/50 Project)

to Joshua Dehne, owner of Pinots Palette and a member of the Old Webster
Trade Association.
If they stop by all 10 stores on Saturday between noon and 4 p.m. for a
stamp, they can be entered to win one
of four Old Webster gift baskets valued
at over $50 each, Dehne said.
According to Dehne, Small Business
Saturday is an important event as it
keeps money in the community.
For example, Pinots Palette Webster Groves invites our guests to join
us for an unforgettable evening of
fun, friends and fine art, where our
local artist guides groups step-by-step
through their featured painting, he
said. When customers support a local
business like Pinots Palette, we are
able to hire local artist to lead sessions,
create more revenue for other local
businesses, as well as taxes for the local government, and give back to the
community better in ways such as our
Painting it Forward program, where
the profits from classes are donated to
local organizations.
Downtown Kirkwood
Special promotions can also be found
on Saturday in Downtown Kirkwood.
For participating merchants, visit the
website, downtownkirkwood.com.
Several stores are really gearing up
with their own in-store specials, said
Kirkwoods Poe. She said Downtown
Kirkwood has about 115 independently-owned shopping, dining and service
businesses. Centered around Kirkwood
Road, the boundaries are Woodbine on
the south, Bodley on the north, Clay on
the west and Taylor on the east.
Poe said Downtown Kirkwood signed
up to be a neighborhood champion
with American Express, the sponsor of
Small Business Saturday. That means
weve got stuff, Poe said, noting that
stores have bags and other promotional
items.
Check out some of the days highlights in Kirkwood: Stop by Kirkwood
Train Station from 10 a.m. to noon for
a cup of coffee courtesy of the Kirkwood
YMCA. While at the train station, purchase Kirkwood High stadium seats.
The Downtown Kirkwood office at 130
E. Jefferson, will be open from 10 a.m.
to 2 p.m. selling Downtown Kirkwood
gift certificates. From 2 to 4 p.m. stop
by Greentree Pharmacy to see Frozen
characters and live reindeer.
Poe said this is the fifth year that
American Express has promoted Small
Business Saturday.
We have been promoting it for several years, but it seems this event has
really taken hold and people have embraced it, Poe said.

A Shopping Day Especially For Local, Small Businesses

NOV 29

American Express
initiated Small Business
Saturday in 2010 to
highlight small retailers
With Small Business Saturday,
small businesses now have a day of
their own during the critical holiday
season.
Small Business Saturday is held annually on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. This year it falls on Nov. 29.
It is a day for everyone from the
business owners who create jobs to the
customers who buy locally to support small businesses that invigorate

the economy and keep communities

thriving.
American Express initiated Small
Business Saturday in 2010 to help
small businesses get more exposure
during one of the biggest shopping
weekends of the year.
In 2012, government officials in all
50 states and Washington, D.C., officially recognized Small Business Saturday including President Obama
and the U.S. Senate.
In 2013, U.S. consumers who were
aware of Small Business Saturday are
estimated to have spent a reported
total of $5.7 billion with independent
merchants.

The 3/50 Project

The 3/50 Project was started in
2009 by Minneapolis-based retail consultant Cinda Baxter. It began with a
blog post and has quickly taken off.
Baxters idea was simple: if half of
the employed U.S. population chose

three locally owned independent businesses they would hate to lose, and
then spent a combined total of $50 a
month with them, it would have a major impact generating an estimated
$42.6 billion of revenue annually.
For every $100 spent in locally
owned independent stores, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll and other expenditures.
If that money is spent at a national
chain, only $43 stays in the community. Spend it online and nothing comes
home.
New this year is the LookLocal free
app for smartphones. Download the
app and find small businesses near you.

Shopping local offers benefits to the

customer and the community at large.
Owner Stacie Swederska runs Paisley Boutique in Webster Groves with
the philosophy held by many small
business owners regarding benefits to
shopping local for customers.
My hope is that the personal service we offer from customized complimentary gift wrapping, to wish lists
to give to Santa help to create an
environment that everyone would prefer to shop in, Swederska said, who is
also vice president of the Old Webster
Trade Association.
Donna Poe, executive director of the
Downtown Kirkwood Business District agreed.
A lot of times, they (customers)
are conducting business with someone
from the community or someone they
already know; someone who cares
about their purchase; someone who
cares they are happy; and someone
who shares the customers desire to
make the community successful and
sustainable, Poe said.
As Swederska put it:
I dont have customers, I have
friends (customers who become
friends), she said. I thrive off the fact
that my business is only as strong as
the neighborhood and other businesses that surround me.
Its the variety that brings people
in and its the small-town vibe that
makes you want to stay. Its a thriving
local business district thats crucial to
that small-town feel.
I believe people choose to live in
Webster Groves because of the treefilled neighborhoods, great schools,

and charming neighborhoods where

they can grab a great meal and look
through the shops, said Jessica Kester, owner of Verde Kids and a member of the Old Orchard Taxing District Commission. I think its so great
when our customers pop in while they
are out on a walk and ask us to hold
items until they are able to come back
later.
Strong local business districts also
help build strong communities.
I think they (business owners)
share a sense of community, said
Poe. Our businesses support all the
events and activities we put on for
the community like the Holiday Walk,
the Halloween Walk and the Summer
Concert Series.
In addition, the businesses are very
generous when they are asked to support local charities, churches and local
groups by donating items and gift certificates, Poe said.
I know many do this on a regular
basis, she said.
Residents look forward to the events
sponsored by the business districts.

Some people really look forward to

our summer concert series and come
every Thursday. It has become part
of their summer, said Poe, adding
its same for those who shop or meet
friends at Kirkwood Farmers Market
every Saturday.
Our small businesses and activities that they sponsor enhance the
quality of life for many members of
this community, she said.
This is also the case in Webster.
I work on the Gazebo Series and
holiday events (in Old Orchard) because I love to get to see my customers
outside of the shop, said Kester. To
me those events give Webster a smalltown feel.
We had the first tree lighting at
Gazebo Park last Saturday, she said.
The kids helped countdown to the
tree lights going on. It was so fun to
see the joy in their faces when the tree
lit up! I hope to make that an tradition
for the neighborhood.
Swederska agreed.

Community Benefits from page 18A

The business owners in Webster
contribute to many of the neighborhood events from the Jazz Festival to
the Holiday Open House, along with
the Street Dance, Cookie Walk, Girls
Night Out and many other neighborhood events, she said. Most (business owners) live in Webster, so it
goes without saying that they have
an equitable stake in the health and
prosperity of their own local business
community associates.
Theres also an economic component.
The Downtown Kirkwood Special
Business District contributes to the
sales tax revenue to the city of Kirkwood, Poe said. The combined contribution of businesses in Downtown
Kirkwood is significant to the city.

I believe people choose

to live in Webster Groves
because of the great
schools and charming
neighborhoods where
they can grab a great
meal and look through
the shops.

Businesses and property owners

contribute funding to the special business district which is reinvested in the
community in the form of plantings,
benches, streetlights and the city is
supportive of all this, Poe said. Without the contribution from small businesses, some of these things people
like would not happen.
Upcoming Holiday Events
After Saturday, plan to return to
Downtown Kirkwood, Old Webster
and Old Orchard for their upcoming
holiday festivities.

In Webster Groves, the Webster
