Lectures: 48 Total Weeks: 12 Credits: 4.0

Prerequisites: Course Number: MEC 231

Course Name: Basic Mechanics-1

Course Goal:
 To understand how bodies respond with applied load
 To develop in the engineering student the ability to analyze a given problem in a simple and
logical manner and to apply to its solutions a few fundamental and well-understood
principles.
 The main objective of the study of mechanics of materials is to provide the future engineer with
the means of analyzing and designing various machines and load bearing structures.

Course Description:
Fundamental concepts of stress and strain; Mechanical properties of materials; Stresses and strains in
members subjected to tension and compression, shear and temperature changes; Shear force and bending
moment diagrams of beams and frames; Flexural and shearing stresses in beams, Shear center, Thin
walled pressure containers, Riveted and Welded joints, Torsional stresses, Combined stresses; Helical
springs; Deflection of beams; Buckling of columns.
