Europeansources,asafemaleemperorratherthananempressregnant.Similarly,afewdecadesearlier
inKorea,QueenSeondeokofSillaandJindeokofSilladevelopedthetermyeowang(,"female
king")torefertothemselvesinsteadofthetermhwanghu(),whichisusuallytranslatedas"queen"
andreferstothewifeofakingoremperor.
AlthoughtheChrysanthemumThroneofJapaniscurrentlybarredtowomen,thishasnotalwaysbeen
thecasethroughoutJapanesehistorytherehavebeeneightempressesregnant.Again,theJapanese
languageusesthetermjoseitenn(,"femaleimperialruler")forthepositionwhichwouldbe
"empressregnant"inEnglish,withkg()beingthetermreservedforanempressconsort.
