At the end of the course, the students would have learnt about the production of
primary & secondary metabolites, enzymes and single cell proteins on an industrial
scale. This will be very useful for entrepreneurship.

1.
Introduction to industrial bioprocess
Total Hrs
07
Basis and development of industrial fermentation processes, screening for new metabolites, strains used in
screening, stock cultures, substrates for industrial fermentation-substrates used as carbon and nitrogen
sources, fermentation media components and inoculum preparation. Fermenter design and its types.
Fermentation medium calculation, Thermal death constant of fermentation medium, Concentration of
glucose being fermented calculation, Calculation for substrate concentration of glucose in fermenter.
2.
Production of primary metabolites
Total Hrs
10
A brief outline of processes for the production of some commercially important organic acids (e.g. citric acid,
lactic acid, acetic acid); strains for amino acid production, zwitterions, Isoelectric point, methods of
production of glutamic acid, phenylalanine, aspartic acid and organic feedstocks production -ethanol,
Acetone/ butanol.
3.
Production of secondary metabolites
Total Hrs
10
Study of production processes for various classes of secondary metabolites: antibiotics: beta-lactams
(penicillin, cephalosporin) aminoglycosides (streptomycin) macrolides (erythromycin), Bacitracin, Dental
antibiotic prophylaxis, Amino acid and Peptides (Chromopeptides, D-cycloserine) vitamins-(Vitamin B12,
Riboflavin). Growth stimulant Gibberellins.
4.
Production of enzymes and other bioproducts
Total Hrs
08
Production of industrial enzymes such as proteases, amylases, lipases, lactase and pectinase. production of
microbial insecticides, biofertilisers, biopreservatives (Nisin), biopolymers (xanthan gum) Microbial cells as
fermentation products Mushrooms, Algae, Legume inoculant, Enzyme deactivated calculation, Enzymatic
process calculation, Equilibrium constant and appropriate enzyme calculation, Enzyme assayed initial
substrate concentration calculation
5.
Production of modern biotechnology products
Total Hrs
10
Production of single cell proteins, Nutritive value of Single Cell Proteins, carbohydrates, sewage and
alkanes, Bacterial proteins, yeast proteins, Production of yeast and yeast products, fungal and algal proteinsEconomic aspects. Microbial transformation- Transformation of steroids, Transformation of ascorbic acid,
Transformation of antibiotics and transformation of pesticides.
