FLANGE FACINGS
6-1

7-0

Flanges shall be manufactured in accordance with the

following standards:

Flanges shall be furnished with raised faces, in

accordance with MSS SP-6 standard or as specified in
the purchase order.

MATERIAL
7-1

All flanges shall be suitable for field welding at

temperatures down to 0C and shall be furnished heat
treated by:
Normalizing: in accordance with paragraph 5.2.2. Of
ASTM A105.
Quenched and tempered in accordance with paragraph 2.1
of MSS-SP44.

7-2

Material for flanges up to and including 20 inch

nominal pipe size shall have minimum tensile yield
strength of 42,000 psi, unless otherwise specified.
Material conforming to ASTM Specification A-105 grade
II or B.S 1503 grade C may be acceptable subject to
flange design giving satisfactory weld transitions of
flange hub pipe.
The carbon equivalent shall not exceed a value of 0.40%
when based on the formula:

CE C

Mn Si Cr Mo Ni Cu

0.40%
6
16

7-3

Material for flanges over 20 inch nominal pipe size

shall possess the minimum requirements specified in
section 7.2 above but material with a yield point up to
60.000 psi may be used if approved by the purchaser.

7-4

The following test specimens shall be taken from one

forging selected from the quantity supplied.
a)

b)

Two tensile specimens taken from the disc of the

flange, one specimen having its lengthwise axis
directionally normal to flange bore and the second
specimen taken with its lengthwise axis
directionally at right angles to the equivalent
axis of the first specimen. Reference figure 2(C)
of ASTM specification A-370.
Three charpy V-notch impact test specimens, each
two-third size as specified in ASTM Specification
E.23, taken from the hub and as near the weld end
as practical, with their lengthwise axis
tangential to the flange bore and the three
specimens equi-spaced around the hub.
Tests shall be carried out at-10 C (14F) and the
average valve obtained from the three test results
shall be a minimum of approximately 2.1 kgfm (15
1b .f) with no individual test being less than 1.4
kgfm (10 1b .F)

8-0

TRANSITION PIECES
8-1

Weld neck flanges of 24 inch nominal bore and over

shall be furnished with 50 centimeter transition pieces
welded to the flange hubs.

8-2

Transition pieces shall be of grade 5LX pipe of nominal

wall thickness and with weld end preparation to suit
the adjoining pipe as specified in the purchase order.

8-3

If required, details of a typical weld neck flange/

transition piece fabrication shall be given by the

purchaser.

9-0

WELDING
Shop welding of transition piece to flange hub shall be in
accordance with the ASME Boiler and Pressure
Vessel Code, sections VIII and IX and BS-1515
part 1 as summarized hereunder.
9-1

Welding procedures shall be qualified by the supplier

and shall include radiographs, macro and micro
examinations, hardness surveys and Charpy V-notch
impact tests as detailed in BS-1515 part 1 section 4.

9-2

Welder performance tests shall conform to the ASME Code

Section IX and BS. 1515 part 1 section 4.

9-3

Shop welding shall be by manual metallic arc,

automatic or semi-submerged are or inert gas processes.

9-4

Inspection and nondestructive testing shall conform to

the ASME Code Section IX and BS. 1515 part 1 section5.

9-5

Preheating procedures conforming to the ANSI _B. 31.1

code section 6 shall be carried out if the purchaser so
requires.

9-6

Heat treatment conforming to the procedures defined in

the ANSI-B.31 code and BS. 1515 part 1 section 4 shall
be carried out after completion of welding. The
procedures shall ensure that no deterioration to the
physical properties of the parent metal occurs and
shall be approved by the purchaser.

9-7

No repairs shall be carried out after heat treatment.

The supplier shall be responsible for all injuries

Defects in the flanges after being installed in the
pipeline that may be detected during the strengthand
leak test.
Strength and leak test will be performed at 110% and
90% of the specified Minimum yield strength
respectirely. Strength and leak tests will be held
