Intheearly1970s,theBoeing747,McDonnellDouglasDC10,andtheLockheedL1011TriStarbecamethefirstgenerationofwidebodypassenger
airlinerstoenterservice.[9]In1978,Boeingunveiledthreenewmodels:thetwinengineBoeing757toreplaceitsvenerable727,thetwinengine767to

DouglaswasworkingontheMD11,astretchedandupgradedsuccessoroftheDC10,[17]whileAirbuswasdevelopingtheirA330andA340.[17]In
1986,Boeingunveiledproposalsforanenlarged767,tentativelynamed767X,[18]totargetthereplacementmarketforfirstgenerationwidebodieslike
theDC10,[14]andtocomplementexisting767and747modelsinthecompanylineup.[19]Theinitialproposalfeaturedalongerfuselageandlargerwings

ThedesignphaseforBoeing'snewtwinjetwasdifferentfromthecompany'spreviouscommercialjetliners.For
thefirsttime,eightmajorairlinesAllNipponAirways,AmericanAirlines,BritishAirways,CathayPacific
Airways,DeltaAirLines,JapanAirlines,Qantas,andUnitedAirlineshadaroleinthedevelopmentofthe

OnOctober14,1990,UnitedAirlinesbecamethe777'slaunchcustomerwhenitplacedanorderfor34Pratt&Whitneypoweredaircraftvaluedat

The777wasthefirstcommercialaircraftdesignedentirelyoncomputer.[19][25][32]EachdesigndrawingwascreatedonathreedimensionalCAD
softwaresystemknownasCATIA,sourcedfromDassaultSystemesandIBM.[33]Thisletsengineersassembleavirtualaircraft,insimulation,tocheck
forinterferenceandverifythatthethousandsofpartsfitproperlythusreducingcostlyrework.[34]Boeingdevelopedtheirownhighperformance
