Speculate to accumulate
Ed Holden

An individual
companys roadmap
for growth is largely
something that is
discussed in the
boardroom. However,
without Government
providing the right
environment and
incentives for
appropriate levels of
investment to take
place, hurdles to
making the most
successful growth
plans will remain.

British manufacturers are ramping up the amount they spend on a wider range of more
sophisticated assets to determine their business strategies. This is a key finding in a new report
by EEF, the manufacturers organisation and Lombard Asset Finance. In addition to investing an
average of 1million each year on plant and machinery, the report illustrates that British firms
are increasing essential and complementary investment in intangibles. These include staff
training, recruitment, R&D, software and marketing in order to clinch a competitive advantage.
However the survey also shows that, despite the majority of companies saying they plan to
maintain or increase their expenditure on new plant and machinery in the next two years, this
is only at moderate levels and, mainly to replace obsolete technology. A significant number of
companies also continue to struggle to raise required levels of funding. According to EEF,
raising the UKs level of investment will be essential in tackling its longstanding position as an
underperformer compared to competitors. Looking forward, one in three companies are
planning to invest the same on plant and machinery over the next two years as they did in the
previous two, although these spending plans are moderate in scale.
Nevertheless, the EEF/Lombard report shows 70 per cent of companies plan to increase their
investment in staff training and recruitment, with one in six targeting a significant increase.
Furthermore, three in five companies plan to increase expenditure on marketing and branding
and a similar proportion on R&D, highlighting the need for government to continue to support
applied research. The increasing role of intangible investment is highlighted by the fact 60 per
cent of companies plan to increase investment in three or more categories. Investment in these
business priorities is becoming more important for more than half the companies in our survey,
but the value of plant and machinery investment is greater for a balance of 25 per cent
manufacturers.
Where companies were cautious about investing, uncertainty over demand was given as a
primary reason by one in three companies, with a similar number citing constraints on internal
finance. One in eight companies identified the availability of external finance, the majority of
whom were SMEs. While some supportive measures have been introduced, such as the
extension of the R&D tax credit and temporary increase in the Annual Investment Allowance,
Government could go further by putting in place the following EEF recommendations:
1. Setting out a clear vision for the economy towards 2020 and the policy and spending
priorities that will achieve cross government growth objectives.
2. Increasing the diversity of the finance landscape by creating a more competitive and dynamic
banking environment, especially for SMEs.
3. Ensuring the British Business Bank has a long term future and is able to invest in new and
innovative funding options such as patent growth capital, mezzanine finance and those
supporting supply chain expenditure.
4. Implement a consultation on the UK capital allowance regime to ensure there is a competitive
and stable regime in place by 2016.
5. Maintain funding for the Technology Strategy Board in real terms over the next spending
review period.
6. Increase funding for the Catapult Centres.
7. Maintain the stable and broad definition of qualifying expenditure for the R&D tax credit.
Solving the problem of long-term hurdles regarding acceleration in investment growth will
require concerted and continuous efforts to bring down the two main stumbling blocks to more
ambitious investment plans; the need for more confidence and greater levels of funding. An
individual companys roadmap for growth is largely something that is discussed in the
boardroom. However, without Government providing the right environment and incentives for
appropriate levels of investment to take place, hurdles to making the most successful growth
plans will remain. Government, the next move is yours.
The survey was conducted between 30 April and 14 May with 173 companies responding.

Construction output rises at fastest pace for seven months

August data has indicated a continued
strong recovery in UK construction
output, driven by sharp rises in housing,
commercial and civil engineering activity.
A sustained upturn in workloads and
widespread confidence towards the
business outlook resulted in another rapid
upturn in employment numbers. Greater
demand for staff also contributed to a
survey-record decline in sub-contractor
availability, as well as the steepest rise in
rates charged by sub-contractors since the
survey began in April 1997.
At 64.0 in August, up from 62.4 in
July, the seasonally adjusted Markit/CIPS
UK Construction Purchasing Managers
Index (PMI) remained well above the
neutral 50.0 threshold and signalled the
fastest overall increase in output levels

since January. The latest reading also

pointed to the second-strongest rate of
output expansion since the pre-recession
peak seen in August 2007.
A steep increase in construction output
reflected strong contributions from all
three broad areas of construction in
August. Residential construction posted
the fastest rise in activity, despite the
pace of expansion moderating slightly to a
three-month low. Civil engineering
activity increased at the strongest pace
since March, while growth of commercial
construction again held close to its fastest
since the summer of 2007.
Strong gains in incoming new work
were recorded during August, thereby
extending the current period of
continuous new business growth to 16

months. Survey respondents cited

improving economic fundamentals and a
corresponding rise in clients willingness
to commit to new construction projects.
As a result, construction firms remain
highly upbeat about the prospects for
output growth over the year ahead, with
more than half (59 per cent) expecting a
rise in business activity and only 7 per
cent forecasting a decline.

Drop in sub-contractor availability

Construction firms hired staff at a strong

rate in August, with the pace of job
creation only slightly less marked than
the survey-record high seen in July.
Moreover, sub-contractor usage picked up
sharply and at the fastest rate since the
survey began in April 1997. This in turn
contributed to a survey-record

greater strains on supplier
capacity in August. Delivery
times from vendors lengthened
to the greatest degree since the
survey began over 17 years
ago. Construction firms widely
commented that low stocks
and capacity pressures had
resulted in worsening supplier
performance. Meanwhile,
latest data indicated a sharp
and accelerated increase in
average cost burdens across
the construction sector. The
rate of input price inflation
was the fastest since July 2011,
with some firms noting that
strong demand for inputs had
allowed suppliers to reestablish margins in recent
months.

HydraForce becomes first tenant of Advanced Manufacturing Hub

International hydraulic manufacturing
company, HydraForce, which employs 280
at its European headquarters at Aston,
Birmingham, is to build a brand new
factory at Birminghams Advanced
Manufacturing Hub. Job numbers at the
company, which last year turned over
around 49 million, will almost double by
2018.
Following confirmation of a 1.8
million grant from the Governments
Regional Growth Fund in June, the
company has completed the deal with
landowners, the Homes and Communities
Agency (HCA), and start to build the
120,000 sq ft factory this month
(September), with a view to moving the
entire business and staff to its new worldclass facility in August 2015.
HydraForces new building will expand
its manufacturing facility by 70,000 sq ft

and allow the company to bring the

manufacturing of more of its products
over to the UK from its parent company
in the US.
The move also sees HydraForce
become the inaugural tenant of the
Advanced Manufacturing Hub, one of six
economic zones in the city. The zones
advanced manufacturing; business &
professional services; creative & digital
media; life sciences; food & drink; IT,
electronics & communications (ITEC)
will provide growth environments for key
sectors. It is hoped that these economic
zones will unlock 1.5 billion of
investment in the city and generate nearly
50,000 jobs.

Ideal site
HydraForce managing director, Peter
Macdonald, commented: The Advanced

Manufacturing Hub is the ideal site for us.

It is logistically well-placed and very close
to our existing premises at St Stephens
Street, Aston so it will be easier for our
staff to move with us.
Over 30 per cent of HydraForces
products are sold into the growing
agricultural equipment sector and 80 per
cent of its output is exported. The
market for our products has grown and
broadened, said Macdonald. To achieve
our ambitious growth plans to double
turnover by 2018, we need the new space
to install new machinery, research and
laboratory facilities, and support.
Facilitated by the city council and
supported by Business Birmingham,
HydraForces decision to base its growing
operation in the area will create local jobs
and boost the areas manufacturing
supply chain.

Holroyd secures 2.75 million order in China

Precision Technologies Group company, Holroyd Precision Ltd.,
has received orders for two of its next generation Zenith 400
helical profile grinding machines from one of Chinas leading
specialists in ice systems and industrial cooling technologies.
Scheduled for delivery to Chinas Fujian Province later this
year, the machines are together valued at 2.75 million. They
will be used to precision grind some 100 compressor rotors,
each measuring up to 250mm in diameter, per day.
We are delighted to have received such significant
machine orders from such a well-respected refrigeration
specialist, said Holroyd Precisions sales manager, Steven
Benn. Whilst the customer in question is well aware of the
immense benefits that the Holroyd Zenith 400 models will
bring to their manufacturing capabilities, the simple fact that
both machines are required in such a short time frame speaks
volumes for the considerable confidence they have in our
ability to not only build industry-leading machine tools, but
also meet the tightest of deadlines.
Developed to precision grind components weighing up to
700kg and measuring up to 420mm in diameter and 2.2 metres
in length, the Zenith 400 helical profile grinder combines high

stock removal rates and aggressive semi-finishing, with

production rates and accuracies tailored to particularly
demanding manufacturing strategies.

Boge hosts
successful distributor
conference
Boge Compressors recently brought together compressed air
distributors from across the UK at this years Boge distributor
conference to provide training to its front line sales force. A wide
variety of Boge distributors were in attendance at the conference,
which provided attendees with an opportunity to gain up to date
information on the latest product offerings, the ability to
familiarise themselves with technical aspects of the equipment
and also the chance to network with other Boge distributors.
An important part of the conference was the in-depth training
on new Boge products, including recently launched oxygen and
nitrogen generators. The latest range of oxygen generators, which
includes 0 3 P to 0 15 P and 0 3 PE to 0 15 PE generators,
provides users with a complete system for generating oxygen inhouse and is a safe and reliable solution that features proven
adsorption technology. The modular in-house nitrogen
generators, which deliver purity grades of up to 5.0 (99.999 per
cent) and use proven pressure swing adsorption (PSA)
technology, enable users to generate high purity nitrogen on-site.
This is significantly cheaper than having nitrogen delivered by a
gas supplier, with in-house nitrogen generators typically paying
for themselves within less than three years.
The conference featured a hands-on training session that
concentrated on the role of energy efficiency and savings in
compressed air generation, where attendees could use and
experience Boge products in action. The conference was also an
opportunity to train distributors in the best practice use of the
Boge service cost calculator, which is a quick and easy quote
calculator for customers considering investing in a compressor
and associated services. This is one of a number of tools that
Boge has been developing to support distributors and enhance
customer service for end users.
We are absolutely delighted with the feedback we received
from the distributors that attended this years successful
conference, said Mark Whitmore, general manager at Boge
Compressors UK. As a leader in the compressed air market,
Boge aims to support its distributors by providing regular
training, and by strengthening the tools and support that enable

WHEN CONSIDERING
SAFE LEAK-FREE CONNECTIONS,
THINK

Flaretite
Recent improvements in emission controls of
heavy combustion engines has led to increased
engine bay temperatures. These higher temperatures, often exceeding 200F, with the aid of aggressive cleaning agents, road contaminants, and
caustic products such as cement dust are attacking common O-ring seals and causing degradation
and premature failures in the fittings where they
are commonly used. The onset of frequent engine
bay fires has been under study in Europe, and
now has been targeted by the Australian government due to the large number and severity of fires
recently experienced there in the mining and
transportation industries. Both metal-onmetal and O-ring seals are targeted
as potential causes of fires in hydraulic, diesel, gas, oil, and transmission lines.
FLARETITE STANDS ALONE in its proven history of impervious connections for temperatures as high as 1200F, while
reducing the overall cost of more expensive
O-ring fittings. Flaretite installed with
JIC fittings are absolutely the safest,
most reliable, and most economical connections for long
term leak-free connections
word-wide.

Emerging
regions prove
increasingly
profitable for
valves and
actuators
market
The increase in oil exploration activities,
investments in new refineries, and
modernisation of existing facilities will
spur the uptake of valves and actuators,
particularly in emerging markets such as
Africa and Latin America. Demand from
the offshore oil and gas industry in Latin
America, in particular, is expected to fuel
the valves and actuators market. In
addition to the demand from the
emerging economies, control valve
manufacturers will find growth
opportunities in North America and
Europe due to end-user preference for
greater process automation.
New analysis from Frost & Sullivan,
Strategic Analysis of the Global Industrial
Valves and Actuators Market, finds that
the market earned revenues of US$19.51
billion in 2013 and estimates this to reach
$25.95 billion in 2018. The study covers
the oil and gas, power generation,

chemical processing, mining and

metallurgy, and water and wastewater
end-user industries.
The water and wastewater industry
will offer significant growth potential for
valve and actuator manufacturers in AsiaPacific, Africa and Latin America, said
Frost & Sullivan industrial automation and
process control research analyst, Niranjan
Paul. Due to the burgeoning population
and rapid urbanisation in these regions,
water scarcity and the need to provide
purified and portable water for human
consumption have led to the setting up of
desalination plants, boosting the use of
valves and actuators.
Despite this demand, valve and
actuator manufacturers are likely to
witness a loss of potential revenues due
to the political situation in countries such
as Iran, Sudan and Syria. In addition, the
global financial downturn has compelled

end users to defer projects and focus on

the maintenance of existing equipment
rather than the purchase of new valves
and actuators.
The adoption of aggressive pricing
strategies in Asia-Pacific too will reduce
the sale of new valves. Vendors must
enhance their aftermarket capability to
sustain profits as well as meet wideranging consumer requirements.
Valve and actuator manufacturers
need to invest in R&D to deliver a
comprehensive solution complete with
wireless monitoring and advanced valvecondition monitoring capabilities,
recommended Paul. With subsea
exploration in Europe and Latin America
projected to rise, widening product
portfolios to include double-expanding
gate valves will help vendors appeal to a
larger consumer base in this highpotential market.

INSIGHT

Installing non-certified equipment

in hazardous areas with potential
for gas explosion
By John Osborne, technical support department head
Northern Europe, Pepperl + Fuchs.
Do you have a piece of equipment which
you need to use in gas explosion
hazardous areas but it is not designed for
any type of explosion protection? On the
surface, the solution seems fairly simple
you just put it into a protective housing.
But since we are dealing with risks to
human life and the environment, many
rules must be followed.

An introduction to explosion
protection rules and regulations
Three major explosion protection directives
and standards are important within the
European Community:
Directive 99/92/EC (ATEX 137)
Minimum requirements for improving the
health and safety protection of workers
potentially at risk from explosive
atmospheres defines the responsibilities of
the employer.
Directive 94/9/EC (ATEX 95) describes
the rules for manufacturing equipment
and protective systems for use in
potentially explosive atmospheres.
In terms of standards, IEC 60079 covers
most of the aspects to be considered. It
contains the classification of hazardous
areas (IEC 60079-10), the various types of
protection, and maintenance and repair
(IEC 60079-17 & -19). This international
standard is released into European and
national rules, while additional regional
regulations may apply.
The IEC standard offers two options to
operate non-explosion protected equipment

inside explosion hazardous areas:

pressurisation Ex p (IEC 60079-2) and
flameproof encapsulation Ex d (IEC
60079-1). As an expert on all explosion
protection methods, Pepperl+Fuchs
provide standard and customised solutions
for both protection types:
Pressurisation (Ex p) keeps the
explosive gas away from the equipment by
creating an overpressure inside the
enclosure. Visit www.pepperlfuchs.co.uk/purge for more details on this
specific topic.
Flameproof encapsulation (Ex d) is, in
comparison, only a passive enclosure
with a certain ingress protection degree
according to EN 60529. The explosive gas
will enter the enclosure via the gaps at lid
and cable entries. An explosion might take
place inside but it must never come out.
Comprehensive product tests ensure
maximum security for applications with
enclosures being thoroughly evaluated and
tested during design, certification and
production processes, to ensure the
following requirements are fulfilled:

cabinet. Purge and pressurisation allows the
HMI and cabinet contents to be mounted in a
potentially hazardous environment even though
they are not certified to do so as a standalone
components.

examinations which ensure that all of the

mentioned requirements are met.
Depending on enclosure volume, type of
gas, and expected ambient temperatures,
explosion reference pressures are
determined. Each solution has to
withstand these references.
All Exd enclosure solutions are supplied
from our 60,000 sq ft UK manufacturing
facility in Birmingham to Pepperl+Fuchs
world renowned high standard of ISO9000
certified quality and reliability. In addition,
our unparalleled service provides expert
application analysis and technical expertise
at no extra charge with each and every
product we manufacture.
www.pepperl-fuchs.co.uk/flameproof

The enclosure must withstand the

explosion pressure without any damage.
Surface temperature must always stay
below the ignition temperature of the
surrounding atmosphere.
Any flame escaping through the gaps
must cool down sufficiently.

John Osborne:
When dealing
with risks to
human life and
the environment,
correct rules must
be followed.

conjunction with a hydraulic servo

sideshift assembly that laterally positions
various multiple tools exactly on or
within the crop rows as the tractor
mounted equipment is driven forwards.
The precision guided tools are used for
mechanical weed control; to remove
individual unwanted plants, hoe between
rows of plants, or spray rows of plants
with impressive lateral positional
accuracies of better than 10 mm at
average tractor speeds of 12 km/hr.
With this type of agricultural
machinery experiencing extreme
environmental and physical conditions,
Garford has turned to Variohm
EuroSensor to provide durable precision
linear and rotary sensors for steering
angle and lateral shift position feedback.
To complete the package of sensors on
the Robocrop range, Variohm also
supplies combined pressure and
temperature sensors for hydraulic system
monitoring.

information to control individual rotating
weeding discs which actually hoe the area
between the plants (inter-row) or in line
with the plants (inter-plant), eradicating
competing weeds but leaving crops intact.
The InRow Weeder features multiple
individual discs which operate across
several crop rows with a maximum width
of six metres.
The rotation of each disc is
synchronised with the forward speed of
the tractor and the plant positional
information from an imaging camera
which can cover a two metre width. Each
weeding disc is coupled to a hydraulic
motor, driven via a proportional valve
controlled by the cab mounted Robocrop
computer, which includes an HMI display
to select modes and display operational
information.
To achieve accurate lateral guidance of
the equipment, a Variohm SP2800 series
rotary potentiometer is located on the
ground contacting steering discs and feeds
back steering angle information to the
system. Garford use the Variohm LWG
series linear potentiometer on the
sideshift to feedback lateral position
information to the inter-row hydraulic
servo system. It also provides a steering
aid for the driver when the machine is set
up as an in-row weeder. Both of these
Variohm sensor products have been used
extensively for agricultural equipment
applications.
[subhead] IP67 sealed housing
The 28 mm diameter SP2800 series
angle sensor features conductive plastic
technology with multiple layer tracks in
combination with precious metal multifingered wipers arranged in a unique
preloaded design that ensures a very high
resistance to shock and vibration. For
Garford, the sensor is supplied in an IP67
sealed temperature resistant Duraplast
plastic housing although aluminium
housed alternatives are available. With a
repeatability of 0.01 per cent of measuring
range and an operating temperature range
of -40 to +150degC, the SP2800 ensures a
long working life of more than 50 million
cycles with excellent reliability,
competitive costs and straightforward
installation.
The LWG linear position sensor, from
Variohms German distribution partner
Novotechnik, has a pedigree of high
reliability under arduous dynamic
conditions. The sensors high resolution
potentiometric output is achieved with a
conductive plastic resistance element and
a precious metal, multi-finger wiper
system with elastomer damping mounted
directly on the actuating rod - which is
supported with twin bearings for
maximum durability. With a shock rating
of 50g and vibration to 9g at 2000 Hz, the
robust LWG linear position sensor

rated unit is actually mounted on the
outside of the sideshift assembly on
backlash-free pivot heads with the
anodised aluminium housing and
stainless steel actuating rod fully exposed
to the elements. Electrical connection is
through M12, IP67 rated sealed
connectors. Across the LWG series,
electrical stroke ranges from 50 mm to
750 mm are available.
Completing the range of sensors
supplied on the Robocrop InRow Weeder,
Variohms EPT3100 Pressure and
EPTT5100 combined pressure and
temperature sensors are used to monitor
the input and output hydraulic pressures
and return temperature information from
the machine. These pressure sensors
feature high level ASIC output circuitry

with a thin-film strain gauge pressure

measuring cell covering a wide range of
pressures. For the combined versions,
temperature measurement in gas or liquid
is via a PT1000 compatible sensor with a
rated range of -50degC to +150degC.
With IP 66 or IP67 sealing and a high
strength stainless steel finish they feature
industry-standard port interfaces with
sleeved electrical cable and optional boot
protection. Through both ranges, a wide
choice of voltage and current output
options is available.
The sensors supplied to Garford are
part of a comprehensive range of sensor
technologies that Variohm EuroSensor
designs, manufactures or sources for
linear and rotary position, load, force and
vibration measurement in demanding
applications throughout industry,
agriculture, construction, autosports and
research.

Start-stop system.
Greater efficiency. Less CO.
The hydraulic start-stop system from Linde Hydraulics saves fuel and reduces the noise emissions of mobile working
machinery. The diesel engine is shut off automatically, in line with defined criteria. As soon as the operator actuates
the steering wheel, joystick or pedal, the driving and working functions are immediately ready to use, to their full extent.
A hydraulic accumulator and a working pump that also acts as a starter motor is what makes it all happen: The starting
procedure is significantly faster compared with using an electric starter motor.
An innovation that saves operating costs while delivering
a high level of performance and comfort as well as reducing
noise and CO emissions.

New hose pump for

medium flow applications
Following the successful Verderflex Dura 45 hose pump,
Verderflex has expanded its range with the introduction of the
Verderflex Dura 55. The new pump is designed to deliver over 20
per cent more flow, increasing the Dura Hose pump familys flow
range. The addition of the Verderflex Dura 55 expands the Dura
ranges flow rates from <1 l/hr to 15.3 m?/hr at pressures up to
16 bar.
The Verderflex Dura 55 meets growing market demands for a
pump that can reduce life cycle costs, maximise plant uptime
and incorporate special design features for arduous heavy duty
applications. The Verderflex Dura 55 is claimed to solve pumping
problems associated with dry running liquid streams, shear
sensitive polymers, high viscosity sludge and pastes, variable
speed dosing, abrasive solids in suspension and off-gassing
fluids. This, states, Verderflex, makes the Dura 55 ideal for use in
a wide variety of applications including; biogas production,
brewing, fly ash recirculation, chemical manufacturing, industrial
processing, mining and water treatment.

Low lifecycle costs

The Verderflex Dura 55 delivers more flow per revolution. This
can significantly increase hose life by decreasing the number of
revolutions to pump a given volume for longer hose life and
expanded maintenance intervals.
A key attribute behind lowering users lifecycle costs is the
premium-quality Verderflex hose. The company comments that,
like all its hoses, the Dura 55 hose has the optimum design to
maximise strength and longevity.

Maximising plant uptime

The Verderflex Dura 55 has a patent pending port flange that
totally encloses the hose. This flange design also includes a

20

HYDRAULICS & PNEUMATICS September 2014

quarter turn lock system, said to be able to halve hose change

times to maximise plant uptime. Normally, supplied in 316
Stainless Steel, this flange design also has optional PP & PVDF
inserts for aggressive chemical duty options.

Heavy-duty design
The Verderflex Dura 55 heavy-duty design guards against
blockages and chokes with its advanced stalled rotor protection
technology, including visible slippage indicators. This advance
eliminates potential rotor, rotor shoe or gearbox damage when
the pumped liquid settles out or a line chokes, reducing both
maintenance costs and production downtime. This key design
feature enhances the Verderflex Dura 55s suitability for pumping
sludge, slurries and all kinds of vicious and waste liquids.
Reinforcing the heavy duty design is the pumps casing and
rotor, made from high tensile strength SG iron unlike the lower
specification GG iron used by many competing products. The
Verderflex Dura 55 pumps rotor shoes are fully supported,
eliminating potential stress weak points. Key benefits of using a
peristaltic pump include:

Abrasion resistant.
Can run dry.
Self-priming.
Pumps high SG, low water content slurries.
Superior Secondary Containment, eliminating any risk of
workplace contamination.
No seals.
Low cost of ownership.
No moving parts in the liquid stream.

Putting knowledge into practice

When Masdar City required pumps for its
water recirculation system it needed to
best utilise the clean energy generated
onsite from roof top solar panels and one
of the largest photovoltaic installations in
the Middle East. Masdar approached
Amarinth who, for the past two years,
has been working on the design and
production of energy efficient pumps
aided by a grant from the UK innovation
agency, the Technology Strategy Board,
and saw Masdar City as an opportunity
to put the knowledge gained into
practice.
To deliver energy savings in pumps,
Amarinth has been developing a costeffective and rapid process for the design
and manufacture of bespoke best
efficiency point (BEP) optimised impellers
that can be produced on short lead times
and at an acceptable commercial cost for
use in industrial pumping applications.
The centrifugal pumps used throughout
industry are often a best fit selection for
a given application from a standard range
of pumps and the majority of pumps in
use today do not run at their BEP and
energy inefficiencies of up to 25 per cent
can often be found. When 95 per cent of
pump life cycle costs are energy costs this
represents a substantial saving.
To meet the needs of Masdar City,
Amarinth used its C-Series pump as a
base unit and then, working with the
Masdar project team, the company has
leveraged the learnings from its energy
efficient pumps project to design the most

Hand lapping kits for on-site seal repairs

Superabrasives specialist, Engis UK, is
offering a convenient, portable hand
lapping kit for in-the-field repair of
mechanical seals and worn valve
components.
A leaking valve or pump caused by a
defective or damaged seal can be
problematic to a refinery or petrochemical
plant, especially if the nearest
replacement parts or repair facility is
located some distance away. Worn seals
need to be repaired quickly and stationary
lapping equipment may not be available
at the work site.

Hand lapping of the seal can be the

best solution, not only to keep the seal in
top condition, but also as a preventative
maintenance step to extend the life of the
component.
The Engis hand lapping kit has
everything needed to quickly and
efficiently repair seals at the job site,
avoiding expensive downtime and repair
costs. Whether the seal is silicon carbide,
Ni-resist, tungsten carbide or ceramic, the
kit contains a complete set of
high?quality hand lap blocks designed
with an iron composite side for rough lap

and a copper composite side for fine lap,

as well as precision diamond lapping
compound.

Mag Drive pumps enable upgrade to sealless pumping

The benefits of using sealless, magnetic-drive pumps as
opposed to conventionally sealed pumps for transferring
hazardous and reactive fluids are well documented, and the
Viking Universal Mag Drive Series of internal gear pumps, is a
good example of this type of pump. Available from Michael
Smith Engineers the proven and reliable Universal Mag Drive
series comprises nine sizes of pump providing flows up to
114m?/hr at pressures up to 14 Bar.
Reducing maintenance costs and minimising environmental
impact are important, if not essential objectives for many fluid
transfer applications and Viking Universal Mag Drive pumps
help achieve these goals: the absence of a pump shaft seal
means significant potential savings as a result of less
maintenance and reduced downtime and with only two moving
parts the simple design ensures durability and reliability even
in tough applications.
The pumps are dimensionally interchangeable with Vikings
Universal Seal and heavy duty bracketed pumps ensuring easy
retrofit with similar sized sealed pumps, often utilising existing
reducer, motor, coupling, guard, wiring and base, without the
need for expensive and time-consuming re-piping. The design
also enables short-term dry-run capability and bi-directional
operation, without the need for modification or disassembly
and so allows for filling or emptying using one pump and

therefore helping to minimise system costs.

Other features include, dual thrust control washers to ensure
positive control of rotor position for more accurate flow and
reduction of pump wear, an externally adjustable relief valve
which can be adjusted while in service when process
conditions change and so maximises process up-time.

Gearing up for greater adoption

Multiple benefits are increasing the popularity of integrated gearboxes
and gear motors, according to Frost & Sullivan.
Benefits such as simplicity, cost-effectiveness, modular design
and flexibility are spurring the demand for gearboxes and gear
motors globally. The growing emphasis on energy efficiency and
the investments expected in wind energy will further fuel the
adoption of gearboxes and gear motors in industries as well as in
wind turbines.
New analysis from Frost & Sullivan, Analysis of the Global
Gearboxes and Gear Motors Market, finds that the market earned
revenues of US$12.80 billion in 2013 and estimates this to reach
$15.67 billion in 2017. North America and Asia-Pacific are likely
to become the largest markets owing to increased manufacturing
and mining activities.
Advancements in gear technology that facilitate the
development of compact, high precision devices will encourage
the uptake of gearboxes and gear motors in these regions,
said Frost & Sullivan industrial automation & process control
senior research analyst, Krishna Raman. The high torque
density and customisable features of gearboxes will add to
their popularity.

Longer life
Unfortunately, advancements in technology result in a longer life
cycle for products, decreasing the market for replacements. The
use of hybrid gearboxes, in particular, will reduce the need for
new devices in the short term. The global economic slowdown

too will affect the uptake of new equipment.

As a result, manufacturers must scout for inorganic growth
opportunities among companies that offer products complementary
to gearboxes to establish a strategic advantage in the global market.
This will also help them deliver holistic drive solutions and meet
consumer demand for integrated automation solutions. For instance,
the acquisition of motion controller manufacturers will allow
gearbox suppliers to deliver complete energy-saving solutions.

Backward vertical integration

Backward vertical integration could also enable manufacturers
to gain control over lead times, observed Raman. Setting up
local manufacturing or assembling units near the markets served
will be another efficient way to achieve faster delivery times and
stay competitive in the global arena.
Analysis of the Global Gearboxes and Gear Motors Market is

Cool benefits
This article discusses the advantage for
using frequency converter technology in
refrigeration applications to control
compressors. As shown through theory
and case studies, speed control of
refrigeration components provides
maximum flexibility, control and energy
efficiency. Most refrigeration systems
spend most of their operating hours at
reduced capacity. Screw compressors
back off slide valves, reciprocating
solenoid valve control and other
compressor types use on/off .
Unfortunately, these control methods do
not provide the maximum attainable
reduction in brake horsepower as
refrigerant capacity is reduced.

Variable speed control reduces energy consumption and increases

system efficiency in refrigeration applications, writes Abdelhak Dhabi,

In standard system design, electric

motors are intended to operate at a fixed
speed. This speed is determined by the
frequency of power supplied by the utility
and motor design (number of poles). The
shaft load on the motor is determined by
the product of shaft speed and torque.
With a fixed speed, motor power is
determined by the torque of the load.
With a change in speed, motor load will
not only benefit from the speed
reduction, but also any reduction in
torque with speed. Two types of motor
loads exist; constant torque and variable
torque.
Positive displacement compressors
(e.g., screw, reciprocating, rotary vane)
are constant torque devices. That is, the
twisting force required to turn the shaft is
constant, regardless of speed. Therefore,
the shaft power is determined by
operating conditions (pressures) and
method of capacity control, which both
effect torque. In general, a reduction in 50
per cent speed would provide a
proportional 50 per cent reduction in
shaft power. (Fig 1)

Almost every rotary screw compressor
uses a slide valve for unloading. The slide
valve moves along the length of the
rotors, reducing the compression length
within the rotors. Although this control
method is infinitely adjustable and
provides reasonable suction pressure
control, there can be a substantial power
penalty associated with slide valve
control. As the compressor unloads, there
is not a proportional reduction in power.

Example
Cost saving comparison between drive
operation and slide valve control on screw
compressors. Screw compressors used in
refrigeration plants come in two types:
a) With slide valve for capacity
modulation.
b) Without any capacity control regime.
Although the slide valve control gives
reasonable suction pressure control, there

is a certain energy consumption

associated with the slide valve control.
From the power consumption chart
(figure 5) we can see that the slide valve
method of control do not follow the
capacity control. In the case of 60 per
cent capacity, the slide valve control
consumes approximately 80 per cent of
the power. Whereas, with drive control, at
60 per cent capacity, the power consumed
is approximately 60 per cent.
Our experience with a customer in
Canada with Mycom screw compressor is
that we obtained the following results:

Compressor motor data:

(*based on actual measurements)
Assuming average annual capacity is
80 per cent of the installed capacity,
20 hours working per day and 365 days
operation, the comparison of slide valve
vs. drive control is given below.
With slide valve:

Baileys drinks to MRO

success with Brammer
Baileys, a key brand of Diageo, serves
over 50 million customers across 135
countries. Located at its 25 acre Dublin
site for more than 30 years, Baileys has
six production lines and three processing
plants, which undergo regular
changeovers to accommodate the 17
flavours manufactured and it is
paramount that it all runs smoothly with
little disruption.

Reactive
Prior to Brammer taking on the
maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO)
contract, Baileys maintenance was on a
purely reactive basis, with the
organisation using multiple suppliers with
little or no control over the costs. In terms
of spare parts, a member of staff would
go to the stores and, if the part was not in
stock, would leave the site to go and
collect it.
With a view to becoming a world class

manufacturing site, Baileys enlisted

Brammer to assist in the maintenance
operations. This meant moving away from
multiple suppliers, some of whom had
worked with Baileys for more than 20
years. However, within six months of
working with the MRO specialists, the
benefits of the new way of working was
clear to everyone. In addition to Brammer
providing parts to Baileys, they offered

multiple value-added services including

an expert coming on site once a month to
talk staff through the latest innovations
and to discuss implementing more
sustainable solutions to problems.
Another benefit of the partnership
included Brammer bringing both its
technical library and its catalogues to
Baileys site. The technical library features
a range of Brammer success stories that
aims to illustrate how to implement new
products, reduce the need for
maintenance of parts, and highlight
solutions for processes that are outdated
or no longer fit for purpose.

Better control and visibility

The introduction of the catalogue gave
staff access to a wide range of products
enabling them to select the most
appropriate solution, not just the one they
had always used which may not have
been the best option. This also meant that

staff had the part number, to give the

procurement team better control and
visibility of what was being ordered.
Brammer adopted a partnership
approach with Baileys, rather than just
being a supplier, and the results have
impressed Chris Byrne, engineering
maintenance manager for Diageo Baileys:
After one year, cost savings were at 16
per cent, but the additional benefits that
Brammers expertise brings is where its
really made an impression.

For example Brammer has provided

an on-site specialist, available whenever
needed for queries, who has provided
training to staff on vibration analysis
equipment. Brammer has also supported
us as we have transitioned from reactive
to proactive maintenance.
All production-critical parts are
now held in the stores, with an
automatic re-order system in place.
Additionally, through removing dead
stock identified by Brammer, Baileys

reduced cash tied up in MRO products by

20 per cent, dramatically improving its
cash flow.
Brammer provided Baileys with a
monthly report detailing what had been
purchased from Brammer, but also what
had been purchased elsewhere along
with the corresponding cost savings had
Baileys purchased that part from
Brammer.

Motivations and requirements

As the relationship evolved, the team at
Brammer gained a full understanding of
the motivations and requirements of
Baileys. Brammer introduced an OEM part
substitution scheme whereby they were
able to deliver a cost saving by sourcing
parts directly for Baileys, rather than via
OEM, as had been the case previously.
This process enabled Baileys to cut out
the middle man, and save both time and
money.
Brammer also evolved its way of
working, to ensure it met its clients
needs. Brammer increased its shippings
from the UK and implemented an urgency
system if Baileys said that the part was
urgent, Brammer would courier it to site.
Altering the service level agreements
(SLA) to ensure Baileys met its
manufacturing targets is just part of
Brammers wider partnership ethos
helping clients achieve their goals by
being more than just a supplier.

AUTOMATION IN ENCLOSURE ASSEMBLY

Kiesling Maschinentechnik, a member of the
internationally successful Friedhelm Loh
Group, is a specialist for automation solutions
in switchgear manufacture. After a five-year
development period, the Averex, the worlds
first robotic wiring centre is production-ready.
But first, two real-world field tests will be

SYSTEMS & SENSORS

Making the grade

The International Featured Standard (IFS) Food is an internationally recognised
certification intended to enhance brand perception regarding food production
companies. It is argued that achieving the required standard can improve food
safety and quality while also streamlining processes and improving efficiency.
Marc Klingler, segment manager for Brkert Fluid Control Systems, looks at the
areas that may require specialist attention.
The fundamental objectives of the IFS Food are to establish
common standards which are evaluated by a uniform system,
which will ensure transparency throughout the supply chain.
This will enable consumers and retailers to have high levels of
confidence in the goods produced as well as reducing costs and
improving efficiency for suppliers.
The current version of IFS Food came into force in July 2012
and is used for auditing those companies involved in food
processing or packaging of loose food products. The audit itself
is carried out by an independent, certified body and comprises of
an in-depth analysis of both the processes themselves and the
documentation relating to the manufacturing processes that is
held by the company.

Scoring system
The audit uses a scoring system to award and subtract points
according to the level of compliance with each requirement. In
addition, the auditor can impose a KO (Knock-out) or a Major
non-conformity, which can subtract a percentage of the overall
score. In IFS Food there are ten KO requirements and if the
auditor establishes that these requirements are not fulfilled by
the company, this results in non-certification.
One such KO requirement is the expectation to operate a
robust Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP)
system, which should focus on the food handling procedures and
Visualisation of the

valve interface component in
a test rig.

ensure that all of the final products are safe to eat. In order to
determine the critical control points, specific monitoring
processes are required which will indicate any loss of control
within a process. In addition, records of the monitoring must be
maintained for a suitable period to ensure compliance.
In essence, this requires the use of temperature, pressure,
conductivity, flow and other sensors to measure the process
parameters and record them for future analysis. In many cases
these sensors will form part of the control loop for the
manufacturing process and therefore retaining this data should
be a relatively simple task.

Evidence of compliance
The food manufacturing company also has a responsibility to
ensure that all externally sourced materials and services that
have an impact on food safety or quality conform to the required
standards. This requires the food manufacturer to retain all the
supporting documentation relating to the materials as evidence
of compliance. All reputable manufacturers of equipment used in
the food industry will provide this as a matter of course.
Clearly hygiene is of the utmost importance within the food
industry and so the audit also scrutinises the cleaning and
disinfection processes to ensure that they provide effective
coverage. For many manufacturers this will involve Clean-InPlace (CIP methods to ensure that the manufacturing facility is
safe. In order to provide evidence of
the effectiveness of these processes, it
may be necessary to have additional
conductivity and flow sensors in
place to monitor and record each
procedure.
Brkert is able to test cleaning
cycles and provide 100 per cent
reliability on the flow properties and
cleanability of a complete valve
assembly by using a riboflavin test
rig; something few manufacturers can
offer. In hygienic applications where
CIP is operated, it is essential to be
able to ensure the cleaning cycle is
both effective and efficient; a
criterion which can be completely
fulfilled and demonstrated by Brkert.

Uniform quality assurance

scheme
The ever-increasing demands of
consumers and the rising liabilities of
food retailers have led to the
increased requirement for a uniform

Submersible hydrostatic level

transmitters in titanium
A range of slimline submersible
hydrostatic transmitters for depth and
level measurement applications is now
available from instrumentation specialist
Impress Sensors & Systems Ltd.
The VersaLine VL4500 series of
titanium-housed submersible pressure
transmitters is specially designed for
depth and level measurements of
ground, surface, waste and seawater.
Typical applications include small size
boreholes, wells, dams, irrigation,
sewage lift stations, rivers, estuaries and
oceanography.
VL4500 pressure transmitters benefit
from a titanium housing that provides
protection from virtually any harsh
environment, particularly seawater,
brackish (briny water) and aggressive
chemicals where stainless steel is
deemed unsuitable.
The standard polyurethane vented
cable is moulded to the transmitter,
providing the highest integrity
waterproof assembly, which is already
well proven in thousands of installations
worldwide. In deep water or deep well
applications, where longer length cables
up to 1500 metres are required, Kevlar
cable can be specified, which avoids
cable elongation. FEP cable is also
available as an option for harsh

environments.
The sensing technology on the
VL4500 series is a highly stable
Piezoresistive element, which is
manufactured from micro-machined
silicon and supported by more than 20
years experience in depth and level
measurement. The sensing element is
isolated from the media by a titanium
diaphragm, which provides high
reliability in long-term installations.
Reliability is further enhanced by an
anti-shock nose cone, specifically
designed to protect against water
hammer (i.e. a pressure surge or wave)
and other external hazards.
Sam Drury, sales & marketing director
at Impress Sensors & Systems comments:
With a choice of millivolt [low power]
or current [4-20mA] configurations
small physical size and a wide range of
pressures, the VL4500 series will satisfy
most applications for water level
monitoring and control. We can also
provide other sensors from our VersaLine
series that include even smaller sizes,
clog-free transmitters for raw sewage,
intrinsically safe transmitters for
hazardous environments.
Supplied with a 5-year corrosion
warranty, the VersaLine VL4500 series
operates in temperatures from -20degC to

+80degC. Pressure ranges are 1mWG to

200mWG. Combined accuracy (nonlinearity, hysteresis and repeatability) is
+/-0.1 per cent FS (BSL) and +/-0.25
per cent FS (BSL).
An extensive range of accessories for
the VersaLine series is available
including sink weights, cable hangers
and a unique method of avoiding water
ingress through the breather tube for
vented gauge transmitters. Other options

PNEUMATICS

New name, established pedigree

Aventics might be a new name, but the company is anything but new to
the pneumatics industry. Hydraulics & Pneumatics spoke with Stuart
Cheyne, managing director UK at Aventics, about the companys current
roadmap in terms of product development and extended market reach.
Previously a subsidiary of Rexroth
Pneumatics, Aventics has been acting as a
standalone company since earlier this
year, although for a limited transitional
period the company will follow a dual
branding strategy with its former owner.
At the 2014 Hannover Messe, Aventics
which is incidentally headquartered in
Laatzen in the same city as the event
celebrated its first major public
appearance.
Although the name might be new, the
companys experience in the market is
immense. Indeed, its history dates back to
1884, starting with the construction of the
first pneumatics plant in Hanover. And
with around 2100 employees worldwide,
the Aventics brand has enjoyed a strong
international position from the outset;
with production sites in Germany, France,
Hungary, the US, and China. The
companys market coverage is also global,
with a presence in over 40 countries.
It is interesting to reflect that as well
as being the youngest mainstream
company to enter the pneumatics market
we are also already a company with one
of the strongest market pedigrees; with
sound employee expertise, long-term
customer relations and a proven product
range, said Stuart Cheyne, managing
director UK. He added that this market
standing is backed up by a highly
proactive ongoing R&D programme
focused both on innovation and
responding to changing market needs as
they occur.
One of the companys recently
launched product ranges is the new AV
valve series. AV short for Advanced
Valve is major breakthrough in
miniaturisation, combining the
advancements in plastics processing with
a new design concept. AV series valves
are claimed to be half the weight of and
over 50 per cent more compact than
conventional valves of the same
performance level. According to Aventics,
machine manufacturers can reach
compressed air savings of up to 20 per
cent, and can achieve even more savings
with the electropneumatic pressure
regulator for application-specific pressure
control within the AV system. The AV

38

HYDRAULICS & PNEUMATICS September 2014

series features a modular design and is

currently available in two flow rate sizes.
It can be integrated into plastic control
electronics in a wide range of automation
environments and communicates with all
common fieldbuses.
Additionally, Aventics PRA cylinder
has been developed for maximum user
convenience and time saving in mind.
With the cylinders exchangeable nose
seal this makes it unnecessary to take the
whole cylinder apart to change the seal,
explained Cheyne.

Knowledge base
Aventics has over 2100 employees
globally, the majority of whom moved
over from the previous company. So we
have many years of experience and
knowledge within the organisation, said
Cheyne. As changes, such as a
requirement for additional extra technical
knowhow, or extra design or marketing
support are called for, we have a very
proactive strategy in place. he added.
The UK team headed up by Cheyne
comprises nine internal staff, including
general manager, technical sales support
and technical design staff. The
company also has three external
sales personnel and is further
supported by a public relations and
marketing company, Big Yellow,
situated in the same building
complex as the companys main UK
headquarters in the Cirencester.

established in sectors such as food

packaging, assembly & handling and
general automation. However, the
company is now also pursuing additional
sectors including heavy industry and
medical technology. We have an
ambitious roadmap in terms of extending
our market reach, and ensuring we have
just the right products to achieve this,
Cheyne remarked. We are also proud to
be a specialist for niches, because thats
where we can offer our customers clear
added value with our experience and our
products.
Concluded Cheyne: Our primary
focus is on pneumatics; thats where
expertise is. So we talk to customers we
can talk competently with them regarding
pneumatic technology and how to best
use pneumatic technology within their
specific applications, no matter what
sector they might work in.

Robust
fixed pipe
connections
made of
metal

www.hpmag.co.uk

Eisele Pneumatics ALU PRO 30 piping system,

with screw connections for metal pipes, is the
first product of the new PipingLine range.
According to the company, the modular system
for fixed pipe connections of the compressed air
supply for assembly lines sets new standards for
the distribution of compressed air, gases and
fluids.
Compressed air offers numerous benefits: it
is clean and simple to use, flexible in
application and easy to regulate. That is why
compressed air is used widely in production
processes of all types. The pneumatic supply
systems are elementary components in these
systems and must fulfil the most stringent
requirements for reliability, economy and
efficiency. A new compressed air system from
Eisele Pneumatics is claimed to offer benefits
such as high quality, easy assembly and
exceptional flexibility.
This high-quality system withstands every
load and fulfils the most stringent requirements
for piping technology. The robust high-quality
aluminium construction is as functional as it is
attractive. No machining of the pipe ends is
necessary during installation. It can also be
used to easily retrofit existing systems or add
additional distributors. ALU PRO 30 from the
Eisele PipingLine enables compressed air supply
for all areas of application from a simple work
table to complex automation solutions and

ensures reliable supply, from the compressed air

generator all the way to the consumption point.

Safe, reliable and flexible

ALU PRO 30 is also convincing with respect to
flexibility. The modular system is said to be
easy to install, saving material, time and
resources during plant construction. The system
can be used, for example, for equipping systems
in the packaging, pharmaceutical and medical
sectors. The patented fixed pipe connection
saves costs of up to 50 per cent compared with
a conventional compressed air supply with
aluminium profiles. Firstly, profiles are more
expensive than the less massive pipes and
secondly, ALU PRO 30 ensures significantly
higher efficiency of the compressed air supply,
while operating safely, reliably and controllably
at pressures from -0.95 to 16 bar. Therefore,
ALU PRO 30 is also vacuum-suitable.
All components are designed for optimum
flow and are manufactured from anodised
aluminium. The modular kit includes
distributors with two to six outlets, pipe
supports, double threaded connections, straight
male threaded fittings, as well as angle, corner
and tee connectors. All connections are
designed for aluminium pipes with a 30 mm
outer diameter.

Precise and quick leak

detection from Beko Technologies
In times of rising energy prices, huge amounts of money are wasted in leaks.
Small leaks can make up a large part of the costs for compressed air. With
the small and easily operable Metpoint LKD leak detector from Beko
Technologies, the leaks in the system can be detected within a short time.
The Metpoint LKD detects the ultrasound, transforms it into an audible
sound and indicates it optically. The Metpoint LKD operates with extreme
reliability. As only those frequencies are detected which occur in the event
of leakage, precise location of the leaks is ensured under all types of
industrial noise conditions. Key benefits are:
Easy handling. Long battery life. Plug & play. Digital display.
Transport case, car charger and headphones included.

switch between LO (low pressure mode:
rated pressure 6.9 bar/free air delivery 12
m3/min) and HI (high pressure mode:
rated pressure 10.3 bar/free air delivery
10.6 m3/min).
This provides a two-for-one solution
covering a wide range of applications,
from standard pressure uses found in
construction and utility markets to more
specialist high pressure applications such
as abrasive blasting, spray painting and
optical fibre blowing.

Losing air, where?

Air leaks can be present but too quiet to
hear or feel against skin. Equally they
could be blasting out large volumes from
a missed open drain valve but are
unnoticed due to normal plant operations.
Any leak is also a potential ingress point
for contaminants such as water, oil or dirt
particles which could cause accelerated
wear or product contamination.
Finding them all for repair is a time
intensive process using traditional soapy
water methods and not always
straightforward due to safety and access
issues for high level working, congested
crawl spaces or proximity to high
temperature lines.
The new CS 530 ultrasonic leak
detector manufactured by CS-iTEC GmbH
of Germany and available in the UK from
Red Dragon Ltd., is designed to allow the
user to identify leaks from a distance,
quickly either as part of an air system
review, energy audit, ongoing testing or
maintenance programme. Based on the
heterodyne principle, the ultrasonic noise

42

HYDRAULICS & PNEUMATICS September 2014

created by the tiniest gas leak is

modulated into the human hearing
range that can be fed to headphones
and shown on the instrument display.
The noise isolated headset allows
the operator to concentrate on the
audible signals detected by the CS 530
without distraction from plant noise.
Once the user has identified the general
area of a leak, progressively finer focus
tips that are supplied with the
instrument are fitted to enable pinpoint
accuracy of the leak location. For difficult
to reach locations, the sensor can be
detached using a flexible lead to allow
testing where the screen would not
otherwise be easy to read.
Whether on an air or gas line,
identification and correction of these
leaks will increase plant efficiency and
reduce running costs dramatically
meaning the ROI period for this unit can
be calculated in only a few weeks.
As an alternative to traditional
methods like soapy water, the CS 530 is

faster to identify the source of leaks, safer

for the operator and as a handheld remote
sensing unit, there are very few areas
where it could not be employed.

COMPRESSED AIR

Energy recovery units

now more compact
Atlas Copco has completely re-designed the stand-alone,
retrofit energy recovery units for its GA compressors.
The new ER range now offers improved performance and
a smaller footprint.
As much as 94 per cent of the electrical
energy used by industrial compressors is
converted into heat and lost through
radiation in the compression process. The
remaining 6 per cent is converted into
compressed air heat losses. The new ER
units recover up to 94 per cent of this
thermal energy to heat water up to
90degC for a number of process and
domestic applications such as showers or
central heating.
The ability for application industries to
generate pre-heated water via Atlas
Copcos ER energy recovery systems helps
reduce the costs of traditional energy
sources and minimise the environmental
impact of their CO2 emissions.

Driven by market needs

Development of the new ER concept was
driven by market needs. The more
compact design recognises the space
limitations of point-of-use sites and
compressor rooms. There is
also a broader selection
of models, including
twin cooler versions,
and optional provision
for an energy savings
counter. The units are
designed to deliver the
best possible
performance at a
competitive price and,
depending on system
conditions, a full return
on investment is often

achievable within 12 months.

The fully pre-assembled, plug-and-play
range comprises three single cooler
models: ER S1, S2 and S3 and two twincooler versions, ER S4 and S5, specifically
designed for optimum oil pressure and
flow through the unit. All of the Atlas
Copco ER units mechanical parts are premounted within the canopy to reduce
commissioning time, simplify
maintenance and to minimise the risk of
incorrect connections.

dimensions are now reduced by 66 per

cent and those of the twin-cooler model
by 33 per cent. The units are offered
with the option of complete, corrosionfree stainless steel construction, for
applications where water purity is critical,
or as a lower-priced stainless steel plate,
copper brazed alternative, which provides
a lower price alternative for non-critical
water applications.
All ER units are provided with
temperature sensors for ER water inlet
and outlet temperature levels, these
conditions can be displayed on the
compressor Elektronikon controller or the
ER unit energy saving counter, if fitted.
Additionally, the SmartLink remote
monitoring system allows users to
continuously monitor and analyse these
and other compressor conditions via an
online portal. This feature allows easy
creation of energy saving reports for
ISO50001, ISO14001 and ESOS
accreditation.
A 3m connection kit is supplied as
standard while extension kits of up to 6m
are available as an option. In addition,
there is an energy counter module
factory-fitted or available as field sales kit
that monitors energy saving data.

Train to gain
With compressed air utilised in such a
wide variety of applications a thorough
understanding is essential; not only to
those who supply or service compressors,
but also for the operatives who use
compressed air on a daily basis. Training
is therefore key for ongoing staff
development, whether to improve skills,
enhance existing knowledge or as part of
legislative compliance. Here, Greg
Bordiak, technical officer at the British
Compressed Air Society (BCAS) discusses
the latest courses to be offered by the
association; specifically in relation to the
Pressure Systems Safety Regulations
(PSSR):
The PSSR (S.I. 2000 No.128) affect
both suppliers and end-users of
compressed air systems. Two provisions
include the need for the user to have a

written scheme of examination and as a

result of this, the ability to carry out an
examination of the compressed air
system.
To cover both provisions BCAS offers a
range of courses; a one-day workshop, a
five-day residential course and now, a
new refresher course to maintain
certification with BCAS.
For the written scheme, the one-day
workshop looks at the elements necessary
for consideration in the production of the
scheme. The workshop provides
background of the PSSR and related
standards and codes of practice, detailing
the knowledge and understanding
required as a provider of a written
scheme.
Those attending receive a manual with
the current advice on written schemes as
well as a BCAS written scheme template,
which can be incorporated into company
paperwork. A certificate of attendance is
issued at the completion of the workshop.
The examination element is catered for
by a five-day residential course. It
provides both knowledge-based and
practical hands-on modules, which
include; understanding of compressed air
systems and of the PSSR and related
standards, appreciation of non-destructive
examination techniques and

Greg Bordiak:

skills, enhance
existing knowledge
or as part of

compliance.

demonstrating practical skills in the

testing of relevant safety related devices.
This course has been run very
successfully since 1995. As a result of
comments received, BCAS has now
aligned itself with other industries that
offer competence-based courses and has
introduced a refresher course for all of
those who currently hold certificates.
The one-day refresher course provides
updates on the current PSSR and related
standards and codes of practice,
contributing to the knowledge and
understanding required in the role of
examiner.
This seeks to identify practices
developed by applying the skills learned
from the original course. A key
requirement of the course is that all those
attending bring their own test equipment.
The test equipment required will be to
cover pressure vessel material thickness
as well as safety valve and pressure gauge
testing devices. Each type of test
equipment is required to have current
calibration certificates.
As well as assessing the capabilities of
those on the course it also provides the
opportunity to compare the differing
makes and models of equipment and the
sharing of experiences.
BCAS introduced time-limited
certificates for three years in May 2008.
All those holding such certificates,
including those issued prior to May 2008,
are being contacted to inform them of the
need to attend the refresher course in
order to maintain the certification with
BCAS.

range of training courses offered by BCAS,

DRYERS FITTED WITH NEW CONTROLLERS

HI-LINE says its range of HPSA (heatless pressure swing adsorption) desiccant dryers are now all
equipped as standard with their new HDC-1 digital controller, providing a digital dewpoint display. In
addition the range of products has been extended to cover air flow capacities from 230 to 17,000
Nm3/h as well as
accommodating operating
pressures up to 40 bar, with
standard units rated at 11
bar. The company says all
product upgrades have been
incorporated without
increasing unit prices, to
ensure that they still
represent excellent value for
money combined with high
performance and increased
operating capacities.
All the dryer models are
fitted with safety relief valves
as standard, while generous
desiccant beds are said to
save energy as the stand-by
condition on dewpoint
control is significantly longer.
Hi-line says operation is
simple owing to limited
moving parts being utilised
with positively driven ball
valve action, with no shuttle
valves incorporated.
All models are built in
Burton-on-Trent at the Hiline production facility. The
pressure valves are also of
UK manufacture, and
supplied with full vessel
documentation and CE
certification. The dryer products are skid mounted, incorporating both pre and after filtration, with all
associated pipework being manufactured in stainless steel.

updates from

Its not all bad news on the

Skills-front By Chris Buxton, CEO, the BFPA.
Britain is very much on the road to
economic recovery. Almost universally
across all sectors, BFPA members are
reporting strong business pipelines with
some sectors such as off-shore positively
booming. However, servicing this steady
increase in business is being hampered by
a fundamental shortage of suitably skilled
individuals with a good work-ethic. To
stay ahead we must consider how best to
harness the talents of our unemployed
young people. The statistics are well
known:
80 per cent manufacturers are
experiencing recruitment difficulties and
two-thirds of those say this is because
candidates lack technical skills.
146,200 job vacancies (22 per cent) in
2013 were unfilled because of
inadequate skills, compared with 91,400
(16 per cent) two years earlier (UKCES
Survey).
100,000 STEM graduates are needed a
year just to maintain the status quo
(The Royal Academy of Engineering).
In the UK some 23,000 engineers are
graduating every year. (However, India
is producing eight times as many; and
China 20 times as many).
830,000 graduate-level STEM experts
and 450,000 technicians will be needed
by 2020.
There is also a human cost to this deficit:
Two-thirds of employers believe that
their staff experience increased stress
and anxiety as a result of skills
shortages (67 per cent).
More than six in ten business leaders
believe that a skills shortage results in
losing work to competitors.
Employers are increasingly looking to
the next generation to help fill the skills
gaps that they are facing. However,
research also shows that young people

particularly those who are currently

unemployed still face stigma and
negative stereotyping from business
leaders.
Almost three-quarters believe that the
recruitment of young people is vital to
avert a skills crisis and more than twothirds believe that investing in better
training for young people would help to
fill skills gaps.
Employers are also facing difficulties
with succession planning six in ten
admit they are struggling to recruit the
leaders of tomorrow.
Against this background it is all too
easy to become demoralised and
despondent. However, there is light at the
end of this particular tunnel. Government
have recognised the problem and there
are numerous new initiatives to try and
encourage young people into
manufacturing and engineering careers
but there is a limit that they can do and
in this world it is becoming more and
more apparent that God helps those who
help themselves.
One organisation that has helped to set
the standard in this respect is JCB. A
major end-user customer of many BFPA
members. JCB has established the JCB
Academy; described by JCB as; an
exciting new school for students from the
age of 14 who are interested in business
and engineering. Jim Wade the companys
principle states: Our academy is the first
of a brand new kind of school in the
United Kingdom, focused on delivering
high-quality engineering and business
education.
JCBs motto is Developing engineers
and business leaders for the future and
the companys aim is to ensure that its
students have every chance to achieve
success, whether they continue into

further education, or move to further

learning in the world of work when they
leave the academy.
In late July of this year the BFPA had
the privilege of sponsoring two categories
of award at the JCB Academy Awards
evening and dinner. The chosen awards
were: Student of the Year Manufacturing
Y13 won by Kieren OLeary; and
Achieving Through Action, won by Harry
Skipper. Lord Sir Digby Jones presented
the awards and also delivered a rousing
and motivating key note address.
It is this kind of initiative that gives
hope to UK employers desperate to meet
the demands placed upon them by strong
business pipelines and an ever aging
work-force. The BFPA is proud to have
been associated with the JCB Academy
event and wishes JCB and its students the
very best of luck for the future.

Additional notes
The BFPA is also pleased to report that
JCB is party to the BFPA Education &
Training Task-force currently working to
develop a modular educational framework
for young entrants wishing to develop a
career in the fluid power sector.
The BFPA is also sponsoring three
students through the Arkwright Trust a
scholarship trust set up to identify, inspire
and nurture future leaders in engineering
and technical (as opposed to aesthetic)
design. This is done by awarding
Arkwright Engineering Scholarships,
through a rigorous selection process, to
high-calibre students in year 11 in
England and Wales, S4 in Scotland and
year 12 in Northern Ireland.
