Lesson Plan Integrating Technology & Pedagogy

Biology Standards:
This standard is from the Next Generation Science Standards for NYS
MS-LS1-2. Develop and use a model to describe the function of a cell as a whole and
ways parts of cells contribute to the function.

Lesson Objective(s):
Biology
The students will successfully be able to:
1) Identify the different organelles in an animal and plant cell and understand their
different functions.
2) Understand the significance of glucose, amino acids, and nucleic acids in the
production of ATP and proteins.
3) Understand how viruses are fought off by cell.
Technology
Students will be able to:
1) Play as a cell in the body.

2) Move the cell and use its movements to gain resources for ATP and protein
production.
3) Click on different organelles to perform different functions to complete
objectives.

Introduce the Learning Activity: The teacher will introduce the lesson by explaining to
students that they will take the perspective of a cell today and then based on that will play
a game and eventually take a quiz to allow them to gauge their understanding of the
material for the day. The teacher will start this lesson with a bio warm up question, which
asks students to write down as much as they know about cells, and the cells structure. The
teacher will then explain the simulation that will be done, which will allow students to
play as a cell. They need to create their own energy using different resources and also
protect themselves against invasion from viruses. The teacher will then explain how
following the simulation they will play a game alone going over the different organelles
and their locations. Finally the teacher will make it clear to them that following the game
will be a practice quiz done in groups online, which asks them to match the functions
asked, to the correct organelle. The teacher will then explain that there will be a surprise
review game at the end. (Cell Battle Jeopardy)
The motivator in this lesson is the simulation and also Jeopardy. Allowing
students to see cell processes and cell defense from the cells perspective will allow the
teacher to engage the students instead of just lecturing them on the different processes,
and the different components of the cell. Video games of any sort are very intriguing to
students because sometimes they dont realize they are learning while having fun playing
the game. Jeopardy is a very interactive game which students will be very engaged for,
and not even understand that they are learning or in this case reviewing.
Provide Information
The information provided for this lesson will be a sheet of paper that just has the
names of the different organelles the students will learn about. The organelles included
will be the centrosome, nucleus, cell membrane, lysosome, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi
apparatus, and ribosome. On the back of this sheet will be a diagram of a cell that is not
filled in with any organelles, and then a cell that contains organelles.
Provide Practice:
The students will be given an opportunity to practice what is learned from the
simulation, by playing a game that requires them to match different cell organelles with
their locations in the cell. Students will have a word bank on the side of the screen, and
next to this word bank will be a cell diagram with arrows pointing to different sections of
the cell. The students job is to match the words from the word bank with the correct

organelle in the cell. If the answers are correct with no mistakes the organelles will light
up and will show the students an animation and illuminated cell. Once they have
completed this in groups they will then go and do it alone to see how well they know the
information.
In groups again, the students will be instructed to another part of the website
where they will be taking a practice quiz. The function of the organelle will be given to
them, and they need to work together to match it with the correct organelle in the cell. If
all questions are answered correctly, the students will see a cell divide on the screen.
Finally, the class will play a game of Cell Battle Jeopardy created by the teacher
to further help students retain the information learned throughout the lesson.
Provide Knowledge of Results:
The evidence that the students understand objective #1 will be obtained by the
results of the formative assessment during the matching game where they need to match
organelles with their location, and then in the quiz where they match them with the
function. This will also be apparent through the Jeopardy results that precede the game
and quiz.
During the lesson the teacher will be walking around checking to see how each
student is doing in the activity. They will provide verbal feedback based off of what they
see and if any students have questions for them to answer.
The evidence that objectives 2 & 3 have been completed will occur when students
are playing Cell Craft. Level 1,2, and 3 of Cell Craft require students to find glucose,
amino acids, and nucleic acids to produce ATP and proteins, while also fighting off
viruses.
The technology objectives will be completed throughout tasks required in level
1,2 and 3 of the Cell Craft simulation. The student cannot advance to the next level unless
all objectives have been met in that level. Cell Battle Jeopardy will also meet these
requirements because it gives students a different model to look at and use to learn.
Written feedback will also be given following the assignment. Based on how well
the students compared organelles to different things they have come in contact with
throughout life. (For instance comparing the mitochondria to a power plant or something
that gives off a lot of energy) Also at the end of class the teacher will ask the students to
once again write everything they know about the cell/cell structure, following the lesson
and the games they have played.

Review the Activity:


Following the simulation, game and quiz there will be review time. The teacher
will have the class get into two different groups and begin Cell Battle Jeopardy. This
game outlines topics of function, cells to factory, cell craft
The teacher will ask the students different questions relating to the material
covered in the lesson. For instance the teacher will explain a function of an organelle and
have students tell them what organelle carries out that function, or vice versa. The teacher
will also get students thinking about the processes carried out in the simulation and how
the different organelles play a role in these and why this is important to life. The bio
warm-up will be asked once again so students can compare what they wrote in the
beginning of class, to what was learned throughout the lesson.
Method of Assessment:
The students will be assessed using the quiz following the simulation and the
game. The teacher also will have an assignment where they ask students to compare
the cell organelles to different things they have come across in life, and by doing so,
the teacher will be able to gauge how much they understand the functions of the
different organelles. On top of this assignment the teacher will ask students using
whatever they can find, doesnt matter how elaborate, to construct a model of the cell.
If they have no supplies they can simply just draw a diagram of the cell using pen and
paper.
