Direct Instruction Lesson Plan Format

Date: 10/21/2014

Grade Level: 5th grade

Target Students: whole class

Theme/Topic: Extend understandings of multiplication and division of fraction

Rationale: Its crucial for students to fully understand how to multiply and divide
fractions. Students should master basic algebraic skills like multiplication and division.
Learning how to multiply and divide fractions will challenge them to master algebraic
thinking. Multiplying and dividing fractions will help students in school and in their life
time. Fractions will appear in standardized testing, help in understanding measurements,
and/or understanding statistics. Nice job with rationale
Common Core State and/or NC Essential Standards:
Common Core Standards
5. NF.B.3 Interpret a fraction as division of the numerator by the denominator. Solve
word problems. Answer in fraction form or mixed numbers. Using visual fraction model or
equations to represent the problem.
5.NF.B.4 Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication to multiply a
fraction or whole number by a fraction.
5.NF.B.5 Interpret multiplication in scaling.
5.NF.B.7 Apply and extend previous understanding of division to divide unit fractions
by whole numbers and whole numbers by unit fractions.
Great list of standards
ISTE.NETS.S Standards
2.c: Customize and personalize learning activities to address students diverse learning
styles, working strategies, and abilities using digital tools and resources
3.b: Collaborate with students, peers, parents, and community members using digital tools
and resources to support student success and innovation
3.d: Model and facilitate effective use of current and emerging digital tools to locate,
analyze, evaluate, and use information resources to support research and learning
Lesson Objectives (Behavioral and/or Performance Objective):
Students will
Students will be able to apply algebraic skills such as addition,
able to:
subtraction, (focusing on) multiplication, and division that they have
What, How,
learned in previous courses and apply this knowledge to multiplying and
and to What
dividing fractions. Good
Extent?
StudentsThey will be able to do so through modeling and equation and
answer in mixed number form if needed.
Student Friendly Objective: Students will be able to work independently and in group
work. We will look at multiple ways of understanding the multiplication and division of
fractions though models and equations. Then, come together as a class and discuss and
overview and think about how this is relevant to daily life.
Essential Question: What algebraic skills have we learned? What two ways can we
multiply or divide fractions? How is this applicable when looking at graphs or studies with
large amounts of work/etc.? you could simplify even more Wwhat algebraic skills do we

need to solve math problems?

Materials:

Lesson Activities
Introduction to the Lesson:
(Hook/Review/Intro.)

20 mins

10 mins

Discuss how the class has already studied what fractions are and how to
add/subtract fractions. Model a quick example or two. Best to put examples
in the lesson hHave students list skills weve already applied in other math
topics (ie. Adding, subtracting, multiplication, division, decimals, etc.).
Talk about how weve combined all these skills.
Read the book My Half Day to pull in students interest and to get them
thinking about how fractions can be funny and seen in daily life. Good
integration
*afterwards talk about how difficult it would be to only have fractions and
not whole numbers lead into why its important to multiply and divide
fractions.
Teacher Input/Modeling:
Do the we go nuts for multiplying and dividing fractions jeopardy style
game on the smart board (downloaded through smart exchange) as a class.
Include this or the link here
During this time go over common denominators, work through concepts
like keep change flip, working though mixed numbers, and showing
model

Here: distribute, blocks, worksheet, iPads/chrome books.

Guided Practice:
Students will break into assigned groups.
Formatted: Indent: Left: 0"

15 mins
Group 1: Work with blocks to complete and create problems on the given
worksheet, may work as a whole. Need to include the worksheet or sample 1
*make sure each student here is individually learning and applying the
new concept
Group 2: will use iPad and explore on any of the following apps
- Fraction Division
- Basic Fraction
- Chicken Coop Fraction Games
Group 3: Use chrome books and go to
http://www.coolmath4kids.com/fractions/ and focus on numbers 14-17
good
*Walk around and assist students with individualized teaching if needed.
10-15 mins

5 mins

Independent Practice:
Students will then each use an IPad or chrome book and go to
http://tinyurl.com/8q4azh2 for a short summative online quiz, and record
answers in notebook. I like that
Closure of the Lesson:
Go over a few questions from the quiz. Talk about words that indicate
multiplication or division. Answer any questions for clarity
Ask students to recall activities we did. And create a KWL chart for the
class wall.
Need to include some kind of timeframe on the left column - 1

Evaluation/Assessment of Student Learning

(Evidence Included)
Formative: During the class I will walk around and clarify any questions the students
have, provide examples if necessary, and keep students on task.
I will be able to tell if students are able to move onto the next topic/standard when I
collect the worksheets and through the online quiz when it is reviewed as a class.
Summative: There is no formal assessment, on the informal assessment through the
tinyurl link. The material will be included on future test after more practice. ok
Extension of Lesson:
I will instruct students to depict multiplying and dividing fractions with either objects, or
the blocks, and encourage them to include this in story form.

Formatted: Indent: Left: 0"

Plans for Individual Differences

Early Finishers: Instruct them to create a story and solve in including mixed numbers, and the
multiplication and division of fractions.
Late Finishers: Look at where they stopped, provide a couple example of the problems and work
through it with them, and stay after class if possible. Mark the stopping point and save it in a
folder and have it for work later on in the school day. Ok just dont penalize them by missing
other things at other times (like recess)
Exceptionalities: I will look at any IEPs and determine the best way to meet the students needs
and encourage peer tutoring, most likely in small groups. .good example This can be done within
the group setting.
English Language Learners: I will demonstrate more modeling for them with pictures and the
blocks.
21st Century Skills: This lesson encourages students to work independently and collaboratively
with one another all while developing communication skills, brainstorming, comprehension of
instructions, and technology uses all by understanding of fractions. s. Good Thus, aiding in them
learning about the multiplication and division of fractions.
Discuss how you address at least two of these learning styles in your lesson:
Visual (spatial): modeling with blocks and equations. Also having students explore on technology provided
Physical (kinesthetic/tactile: Students are able to move around to stations, and use things like blocks to understand
Logical (mathematical): practicing the algebraic skills learned
Social (interpersonal): collaborating in group settings and as a class
Solitary (intrapersonal): implementing the online quiz by themselves
