GENERAL INFORMATION
Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) is an isomer (this refers
to a slight rearrangement in molecular structure) of linoleic
acid, an omega-6 essential fatty acid. Two of the resulting
isomeric structures of CLA, cis 9, trans 11 and trans 10, cis
12 have been shown to have specific health benefits. For
example, cis 9, trans 11 (conjugated double bond between
carbon 9 and carbon 11) regulates the function of the
immune system; while trans 10, cis 12 (conjugated double
bond between carbon 10 and 12) regulates body
composition.

Preliminary animal research has shown that CLA has

antioxidant properties, and may help protect cells from free
radical damage. Other studies have shown CLA to be
beneficial for helping to maintain healthy blood glucose
levels. Furthermore, there is some evidence to suggest that
CLA can support cardiovascular health by helping to
reduce LDL (bad) cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

Humans do not have the ability to convert linoleic acid

into CLA in their digestive systems, so they must obtain it
from their diet. CLA is a naturally occurring fatty acid that
is found primarily in beef and dairy fats, but is also found
in smaller amounts in vegetable oils such as safflower and
sunflower oil. When cattle feed on native grasses, their
digestive systems are able to convert linoleic acid to CLA.
However, with the decline in consumption of meat and
dairy over the years, and with the change of cattle feed

transporting fat from the bloodstream into adipocytes. As a
result, these cells begin to shrink in size, and new ones are
prevented from forming. CLA also stimulates an enzyme
that enhances the rate of lipolysis (breakdown of stored
body fat) for energy within the muscle cells, while
lessening the breakdown of lean tissue for energy use.
These combined effects lead to a reduction in body fat, and
an increase in lean muscle mass, thereby improving overall
body shape and composition. In conjunction with a
balanced diet and regular physical activity, CLA has been
