USING COORDINATES
Formal description of coordinate graphing in books:
o Set of axes (Cartesian Plane) labeled x and y
o Because we have an x axis and a y axis, coordinated plotted on the
Cartesian plane have an x coordinate and a y coordinate.
Give example (labeled) and plot on graph
Coordinates are labeled with x first, then y
Work through questions in Ex 12A pg 214 q1-2, 5, 7
TREASURE MAPS
Draw a classroom treasure map (similar to question 5 from Thursday) that
a friend can solve)

USING A TABLE OF VALUES TO FIND A RULE

Use Number Patterns PPT with handout for students
We could also go backwards: with the rule, we could fill out a table of
values

TUES L3

SKETCHING A GRAPH FROM A TABLE OF VALUES

Remember that a coordinate point contains an x value (horizontal axis)
and a y value (vertical axis)
A table of values can show us these numbers
o Create a rule and table of values as a class
o Plot the values on a set of x y axes
o This is a graph of that rule we can use it to predict values that
arent in our table of values (e.g. 3.5, 10 etc.)
Look at example 3 on page 218 of textbook
Ex 12B page 219 q2-6

TUES L4

SLOPE OF A LINE
Draw a few different graphs on the board which one is steepest?
o Steepness of a line is called gradient or slope the larger the
slope, the steeper the line
The slope of a line between two points is equal to the change in vertical
location (the y step) divided by the change in horizontal location (the x
step)
o So, the difference in y coordinates divided by the difference in x
coordinates
o For two points (x1, y1) and (x2, y2) the slope of the line is m = (y2
y1)/(x2 x1)
o Example as a class

Extension: Slope dot to dot

THURS L2

SLOPE OF A LINE
Recap the formula for finding the slope of a line (slope = (y coordinate 2
y coordinate 1) / (x coordinate 2 x coordinate 1)
o Do some more examples on the board
Slope from a Graph worksheet
o Do a few questions as a class if no points are provided we label
our own
Extension: Slope dot to dot
Super Extension: Sudoku

MIDPOINT FORMULA
If we want to find the midpoint the middle point between two
numbers, what do we do?
o If I want you to tell me the midpoint between 7 and 15, what do
you do?
o What about the midpoint between 16 and 4?
Have a go how could you find the midpoint between (1, 2) and (3, 6)?
o Find the average of the x coordinates and the y coordinates
Using that same method, find the midpoint between (6.4, 3) and (10.7,
4).
There is a formula for this: Midpoint of two points (x1, y1) and (x2, y2) =
(x2+x1)/2, (y1+y2)/2
Midpoint Formula worksheet
o Complete question 1 as a class

FRI L7

MIDPOINT FORMULA
Collect homework sheets (slope)
What was the midpoint formula?
Practice question: whats the midpoint of (0, -8) and (3, 2)?
Finish the Midpoint Formula worksheet from yesterday

WRITING THE EQUATION OF A LINE

Does anyone here want to be a tradie (e.g. sparkie)? How do they charge?
(flat rate for call out, then charge per hour).
Lets say a sparkie has a flat rate of $20 (call out fee) and then charges
$25/hour after that. Graph on a set of axes (draw on board and in books.
Label axes).
o So for 1 hour, it would cost $45, 2hr is $70 etc.
So, if I were to ask you how much 3.5hrs would cost, how could we
calculate it?
o 3.5*25 + 20
What about 7.2hrs?
o 7.2*25 + 20
We can write this as an equation: Cost = No. of hrs*25 + 20
o But how did we plot the graph? Cost was on the y axis and No. of
hrs was on the x axis. So lets substitute that in
o Y = x*25 + 20 or as we know y = 25x + 20
o This is the equation of the line that weve graphed. To break it
down: we have our variables that relate to each axis; we have a yintercept which tells us where the line crosses the y axis (here its
20) and we also have the slope of the line.
Check that 25 is the slope of the line using the formula.
In general, the equation of a line is written as y = mx + c, where y and x
are the axis variables, m is the slope, and c is the y intercept.
Practice:
o Whats the slope and y intercept of the line y = 2x 4?
o How can I write the equation of a line with slope -3 and y
intercept 5?
Worksheet: Recognising Equations (reading off the slope and y intercept)
Extension: Sudoku
EQUATION OF LINES
Recap: whats the equation of a line with slope 7 and y intercept 0.5?
What about a line with slope -0.2 and y intercept 1?
What about straight, flat line that goes through the point (0, 3)
o Whats the slope of a line thats horizontal? (0)
o What about a line thats vertical (undefined)
Sometimes we have to calculate the slope (like weve been doing) first
before we write the equation.
o Look at the line: if it goes up 2 and across 1, whats the slope?
o If a line goes down 3 and across 2, whats the slope?
o This is called rise over run, and is a great way to calculate the
slope of a line from a graph
Worksheet: Writing the Equations from Graphs
Extension: Graphing Lines worksheet

TUES L4

EQUATIONS OF LINES
To write the equation of the line I need:
o The slope and the y intercept, or
o The slope and a point (demonstrate how to find the y intercept), or
o Two points (demonstrate first how to find the slope then the y
intercept)
Equations of Lines Practice worksheet
Extension: Sudoku

REVISION
Pass it on activity:
o Every student has a piece of grid paper
o Student 1 draws an x y axis and plots 2 points. Write their name
on the top.
o They then pass it on to student 2
o Student 2 finds the midpoint. Pass it on!
o Student 3 finds the equation of the line joining the two points.
o The paper is returned to the first student who checks the work
Create class set of notes (Have grid paper available)
Test covers:
o Coordinates
o Slope
o Equations of Lines
o Midpoint Formula

LINEAR EQUATIONS
Identifying linear patterns

Using a table of values to find a rule

Sketching a graph from a table of values
Finding a rule from a graph
Using the y = mx + c form to write a rule (and how this relates to the graph)
Identifying and calculating the slope of a line from the rule and from a graph
Finding the midpoint of two points
Finding the distance between 2 points (using Pythagoras then the formula)

DISTANCE BETWEEN TWO POINTS

Project grid lines onto whiteboard and plot two points (1, 2) and (5, 5)
How could we find the distance between these two points?
o HINT: draw a right angled triangle with the line segment between
the points as the hypotenuse.
o Use Pythagoras Theorem (remember what that is?) to find the
distance (the length of the hypotenuse)
As we know, there are a few steps in the Theorem. So for 2 points, there
is a formula that combines all these steps into one:
o Distance between 2 points (x1, y1) and (x2, y2) = sqrt((x2-x1)^2 +
(y2-y1)^2)
If we try the problem using the formula, we get the same answer it just
uses a little less writing!
What about the distance between (8,-2) and (3, 9)?
The Distance Formula worksheet
o Some questions as a graph so you can draw the triangle if you
need
o Some questions just written as points to put into the formula
