Students who miss class are also responsible for obtaining and
turning in future assignments on the due date. Tardy future
assignments will not be accepted. A grade of zero (0) will be
given for a missed quiz/tardy assignment that was not completed
in accordance with class guidelines. Make-up assignments/tests
will be designed to be more difficult and more extensive, to
compensate for the advantage of greater study time.
Attendance:
Each student’s active participation, and the sharing of his or her
questions/discussion points with other students, is critical to the
success of a Seminar. Attending classes is thus essential. More
than two unexcused absences will result in a five-point penalty.
Grading Policy
Grades are based on your completion of weekly writing and reading
assignments, your formal lecture summarizing one of the assigned
readings, your formal lecture on your thesis topic, and your
completion of the three aspects of your thesis. Points are also
available this semester for a special class project.

The two formal lectures (Mandatory) are worth 15 points each, for a
a total of 30 points. The rubric for scoring the presentations will be
handed out and explained during the first class.

The weekly written assignments are worth a total of 54 points.

Overall, 106 possible points may be earned. As you can see

C = 70-79 points
C- = 65-69 points
D = 55-64 points
F = less than 55 points

Goal 1: Content. When you critique a reading, you

Consideration: A problem is that a few


students are only summarizing readings. Others in
our class are writing excellent papers. Some of
these latter students are cleverly dividing their
papers into two sections. My advice is for all
students to carry out this option. One section is
labeled Summary (roughly ½ of submission); the
other section is labeled Analysis (roughly ½ of
submission). As of September 13, Content will be
scored according to the Guidelines, as dictated by
our goal of promoting independent scholarship and
by re-accreditation requirements.

Goal 2: Form. When you write your report, you are to


apply correct formatting, spelling/typing, and grammatical
English usage. Your points (0.25), however, are based only
on correct usage of the battery of Cheater’s Rules. You must
include at least one Cheater’s Rule in each weekly paper. As
the semester progresses, you are to apply as many Cheater’s
Rules as possible.

Consideration. A problem is that a few students do not


seem to be applying any Cheater’s Rules, unless one wishes
to focus on commas. Recently, one member of our class
asked about the value of underlining the Cheater’s Rule that
is being applied deliberately in a paper. That seems an
excellent suggestion. In all remaining papers, I request that
students underline the Cheater’s Rule they are applying
deliberately. As of September 13, Form will be scored
according to the Guidelines, as dictated by our goal of
promoting independent scholarship and by re-accreditation
requirements.

Please also note the following: Experts agree with


Candreva that split infinitives may be applied when
thoughtful consideration indicates that breaking the
grammatical rule promotes clarity. That said, objective
scoring requires a rubric, which cannot reflect subjective
criteria such as thoughtful exceptions to the rule. Thus, as
of September 13, split infinitives will ALWAYS be scored as
incorrect.
