Mensuration Parallelograms, Trapeziums, Prisms and Cylinders

1. In the figure below, ABCD is a square of sides 10 cm. ABFD and CDEB are quadrants
with centres A and C respectively. Find the area of the shaded region. (Take = 3.14)

2. The figure below is made up of 5 rectangles and a semicircle. Given that the perimeter is
97.1 cm and the length of a rectangle is twice that of its breadth, find the area of the
figure. (Take = 3.14)

3. A wax cuboid is melted and recast into a cylindrical wax with a volume of 6750 cm3.
Given that the breadth of the cuboid is equal to its height and its length is twice its
breadth, find the length of the cuboid.
4. The sides of a triangle are 12 cm (Side A), 14 cm (Side B) and 8 cm (Side C). Side C is
increased in the ratio 4 : 7, Side A is decreased in the ratio 6 : 5. The ratio of the newly
decreased Side A to the newly increased Side B is 2 : 3. Find the new perimeter of the
triangle and express the difference between the new and original perimeter as a
percentage of the original perimeter, correct to 1 decimal place.
5. Cylinder A has a height of 12 cm while Cylinder B has a height of 8 cm. If both have the
same curved surface area of 96 cm2, which cylinder has a bigger volume? Prove it.
6. The cross-section of a swimming pool is shown below. BC : AD = 1 : 2 and the length of
the pool is 25 m. When 250 m3 of water, which is less than of the whole capacity of the
pool, is added to the empty pool, the water level is at 0.6 m. Find the area of the
rectangular water surface facing the sky.

7. A metal solid cuboid of dimensions 18 cm by 10 cm by 8 cm is melted and recast into a

cylinder and a cube. Given that the side of the cube is equal to the radius of the cylinder
and the height of the cylinder is thrice its radius, find the volume of the cylinder. (Take
= 3.14 and give your answer correct to 2 decimal places.)

8. The figure below shows a big rectangle made up of 30 small rectangles whose area is 4
cm2 each. Find the area of the shaded region.

9. PQRS is a rectangle. V and W are midpoints of SP and SR respectively. Given that QT =

TR and PU = UQ, what fraction of the rectangle is shaded?

10. The figure below shows 3 circles. The ratio of the diameters of the 3 circles is 5 : 3 : 2.
What fraction of the whole circle is shaded? (Take = 22/7)

11. PQRS is a parallelogram. Given that SW : WR = RV : VQ = 1 : 2 and T and U are the

midpoints of PS and PQ respectively, what fraction of the parallelogram is the
quadrilateral TUVW?

12. A solid metal cuboid of breadth 10 cm and height 5 cm is melted and recast into a
cylindrical pipe with regular thickness of t cm and external diameter 10 cm. Given that
the length of the pipe is 60% longer than that of the cuboid, find t. (Take to be 3.14 and
give your answer correct to 1 decimal place.)
13. When 2009.6 cm3 of water is poured into a cylinder, already containing some water, the
water level rises by 10 cm and reaches the brim of the container. Given that the ratio of
the volume of the water added to that already in the container is 5 : 7, find
(a) the height,
(b) the curved surface area of the whole container.

14. In the figure below, ABCD and PQRS are squares of the same area. Given that SY : YR =
PX : XS, what fraction of ABCD is shaded?

15. ACDF is a parallelogram made up of 2 other parallelograms, ABEF and BCDE. Given
that AF = 25 cm, FE = 30 cm, CG = 15 cm and M is the midpoint of FE, find x.
