Sawmills

Logosol Provides a
Full Range of Sawmills
From small handheld mills to full-sized, Logosol has the sawmill for you.
Logosol is unique among sawmill equipment manufacturers, as we manufacture mills for all size sawmilling. From
handheld mills to fullsized sawmills, we
have equipment that can meet your
needs. And, we are a company that can
help you grow your operation, providing additional add-ons and accessories
that will enable you to grow your sawmilling activities economically. The trick
is to find which sawmill is best for you.
Big Mill System grows with you

The TimberJig, the base model of the Big

Mill System, is where many people start. If
you have a chainsaw, then with the TimberJig, you can turn that chainsaw into a sawmill
capable of cutting dimensional lumber. This
is the magic of the TimberJig to be able to
produce lumber that is ready for your building projects. This is not just a slabber, with
the TimberJig you can make 2X4s, beams,
and siding lumber from your own logs. Of
course, with the TimberJig, you need to be
ready to work hard, as this is a handheld sawmill, so you will spend a lot of time with your
logs and chainsaw, getting up close and personal. But, if you only need to process a special log or two, or material for a small project,
this is the most economical and precise sawmill there is for the money. Logosol provides
a full manual, complete with techniques for
maximizing the cutting of your logs, so you
can easily make back the cost of this sawmill
with the sawing of just one good log.
The TimberJig is the integral component
of the Big Mill System, so you can just add
end supports and a rail and you have a more

versatile sawmill for the milling of larger logs.

You can also use these supports and the instructions in the manual to make your own
easier to use sawmill. And, if you encounter
huge logs, you can grow your Big Mill System
into an LSG for slabbing big logs, or even into
the Big Mill Pro to make precise cuts on huge
logs with your chainsaw.
Do-It-Yourself builders Dream

If you are looking to do some major project

building, such as building a shed, a deck, or
cabin, the M8 Sawmill might be your best bet.
The M8 sawmill has proven to be a workhorse,
providing the ability to produce dimensional
lumber consistently and with a minimum of
expense and work to the operator. One of the
secrets to this easy to use sawmill is the cranking system on the saw carriage. Logosol was
the first to use a crank system on its sawmills
to move the saw through the wood, rather than
relying on the operator to physically push the
saw through the whole length of the log. This
technique has recently been copied by other
sawmill companies, but Logosol was the first
to realize how much smoother and easier this
would be for the operator. The string acts as a
buffer as it will stretch as the saw encounters
different densities of wood and takes the shock
out of cutting for the operator. The operator
only has to turn the crank and follow the saw
carriage down the length of the rail.
Amazingly Smooth Cut

Another secret to using Logosol sawmills, is

the ripping chain that we sell. This chain was
developed in conjunction with a major chainsaw manufacturer when Logosol first started

building sawmills, and has been a marvel of

chainsaw milling ever since. Our chain provides a cut so smooth, most people do not believe it was cut with a chainsaw unless they
were watching when the board was cut.
Chainsaw Powerhead Makes it Easy

There are many advantages to having your

chainsaw be your sawmill powerhead, such
as being able to fell and buck your logs with
the same engine that mills them, and the savings you get when you use this type of engine.
But the biggest is that if you can use a chainsaw, you can operate our sawmill. A Logosol
sawmill doesnt take a big learning curve, the
operation of the chainsaw on the mill is very
straightforward, and is much easier than operating a chainsaw to fell trees, and cut logs
to length. If you have a chainsaw, consider
yourself an expert Logosol sawyer!
Woodworkers Perfect Mill

Woodworkers told us they didnt need a long

sawmill. Their needs involved a way to cut
precise, short logs 8 or less in length and
we responded by developing the Woodworkers
Mill. This is a short version of the M8, but
in compact format, with rock solid capabilities
for woodworkers milling needs. Producing
the cuts you need for your woodworking is easy
with the Woodworkers Mill, which was featured recently in a Logs To Lumber How-To
Video by the Woodworkers Guild of America.
This organization, which is dedicated to providing quality how-to videos for woodworkers,
selected this mill as the mill of choice for their
video learning series for woodworkers.

big mill system

The only sawmill in the world that will grow with you.

Logosol began production of the Logosol Sawmill in 1989. Since then we

have delivered tens of thousands of sawmills to satisfied customers around
the world. The first Timberjig was delivered in 1990. This simple but functional equipment is much appreciated by sawyers around the world. Many
customers have, however, looked for a product that is a little more outfitted
than the Timberjig, but not quite as extensively equipped as a Logosol Sawmill.

e have used our customers and our

own experience to develop a system
where the base is a new, improved
Timberjig. A well thought out line of mounts,
guide rails, supports and other accessories,
which are all compatible with the Timberjig, makes it possible to extend and suit the
sawing equipment to your particular needs.

Adaptable

The components are divided into two lines;

one which aims at sawing normal-sized logs,

and one which aims at sawing oversized logs.

Most of the components are the same for the
different systems and can thereby be re-utilized for different applications.

We have put together four ready-made

packages that suit different purposes. When
you desire, you can upgrade the packages.
Which package suits your particular needs?

High Quality

On the following pages you will find:

All the aluminium components have been anodized to offer a smooth, hard surface. Some of
the steel components are treated with nitrogen
gas and hardened in oil, which gives the steel
high durability, low friction and the characteristic black colour.

the middle of the log. If it is longer than
23 ft, two guide rail props should be
used.

big mill Timberjig

The Timberjig saws quickly and accurately for a small investment.
You make your own wooden copies
of the components of Bill Mill Basic,
namely the guide rail and the guide
rail supports. The Timberjig comes with
mounts for making the guide rail and a
detailed manual for the entire Big Mill
System.

Many first-time users of the Timberjig are

amazed that it actually works as a small sawmill. You can produce your own planks and
boards by first sawing a beam and then cutting
it into the desired dimensions. The accuracy
usually lies within plus or minus a couple of
millimetres at the start, but practice makes
perfect. The more you saw the better the precision will be.
The Timberjig is suitable for
logs up to 20, but in practice
there is no upper limit to
how big logs you can saw.
Most chainsaws with two
bar bolts are compatible
with the Timberjig and
the Big Mill System.

big mill Basic

For higher precision and flexibility when choosing how to cut the log.

With Big Mill Basic you can cut logs into

rough-edged boards, or into cants that
can be used for building a log house or
be cut into edged planks or boards.

The Basic package includes a 9 ft long guide

rail and two guide rail supports made of steel.
The supports can be set at 90 degrees angles in
four exact positions, enabling you to cut rightangled surfaces. You can adjust the height
quickly and accurately with the help of scales
with fixed steps that facilitate adjustments.
The Basic system offers many possibilities. If the log is to be sawn where it lies, the
mounts can be screwed directly to the log
ends. The equipment can stay mounted on the
log until only the centre of the log remains.
This last part is sawn with the help of the
Timberjig, which is then guided by the sawn
surface of the previous cut. If you want a more
permanent work site, you just fit the mounts
and the guide rail to a log ladder that you
build yourself. The project log is easily secured
at a right angle next to the guide rail, which
can be raised or lowered. All instructions are
included in the detailed manual.
This system is suitable for both normal
and oversized logs. Bar lengths up to 36 can
be used. When fitting the mounts to the log
ends, the BASIC package is suitable for logs
up to 32 in diameter.

big mill LSG

Two conjoined Timberjigs. Perfect for slicing up large logs.

This is how you do it: First, you fit something straight onto the log, e.g. a ladder or
a wooden constuction. This will guide the
first cut. Then you take the next cut, letting
the saw be guided by the sawn surface of the
first cut, almost like a cheese slicer. Maximum
depth of the cuts is 8 inches. You can either
cut wide, rough-edged boards, or saw beams
that are then cut into ordinary edged planks
and boards, using one of the Timberjigs.
Provided that the first cut is perfect, the LSG
cuts large logs with very high precision. With
a 36 long guide bar, you can take 29 1/2
wide cuts.

IMPORTANT: When placing

your order, state which guide bar
length you are going to use on
your LSG, 36 or 47, in order
to get the correct length on the
arms for the guide rails.

The system includes a Logosol LSG with its

two Timberjigs, the mounts from Big Mill
Basic, extended arms that hold the two guide
rails on either side of the log, and two extra,
sturdier fixing plates for the log ends.
Due to the guide rails, you can easily take
perfectly guided cuts all the way down to the
centre of the log. After that, you can use the
LSG without guide rails, since you then have
a wide and perfectly plane surface that guides
the cut. You can also continue to use the guide
rails if you rotate the log half a turn and cut it
from the other direction. The guide rails can be
rotated around the log in fixed 90 degree steps.
Raising and lowering is also done in fixed, accurate steps. This enables you to saw edged
boards, if desired. The double guide rails can
also be fitted together so that you can cut twice
the length with the Timberjig. In brief, almost
everything is possible with the PRO package.

Sawmills | Big Mill System

Logosol M8 The
Swedish Portable Sawmill
With the Logosol Sawmill M8 you can
quickly produce high-class planks and
boards from your logs, in the length
and dimensions of your choice. The
sawmill is simple to use and easy to
own.

If you have not cut timber before, the M8 is

the perfect choice. You will quickly get started
and the sawmill is very easy to use. The first
day you will already have produced a goodsized stack of planks and boards.
Visible scales and the possibility of sawing
in fixed steps make setting quick and accurate.
Everything is clearly described in the book
that comes with every sawmill.
The accuracy is impressive, no matter if you
are sawing boards for panelling or squared
logs for building log houses. The M8 can cut
all sorts of wood both from the forest and the
garden: oak, aspen, juniper, apple tree, cherry
tree, larch. The list goes on.
Strong and rigid frame

The sawmill is built of strong, anodized aluminium, a material that gives it fantastic
qualities. Besides being forever rustproof and
storable outdoors, it is so strong and rigid that
it can easily take large-diameter logs. At the
same time it is so lightweight that you can
lift and move it by hand. The coating of the
sawmill gives a fine and dirt-repellent surface, which also prevents snow and ice from
sticking to the sawmill. The sawmill is almost
maintenance free, and it will work when you
need it, for decades.

10

Sawmills | Logosol M8

Well thought out ergonomics

The log ramps and the log beds with integrated winches enable you to cut timber without much effort. The log comes up to a level
that makes it comfortable for you to secure it
on the sawmill. The compact design makes it
even easier when the log is to be turned over,
since you then can come close to the sawmill
and have a good working posture. But another
feature that is just as important for your convenience is that the boards come at an easily
accessible waist level, making them easy to lift
from the sawmill.
In other words, the Logosol Sawmill not
only saves your time, but also spares your back.
Fixed log supports are fitted at an exact angle to the log beds. The fixed supports save
time, as they never require resetting between
the saw cuts, and you do not have to adjust the
log clamps. This gives you even better accuracy, as the log that is sawn into boards is supported from the log bed and up to the topside.
In addition, the design of the sawmill makes
it suitable for sawing in the winter. All important functions of the sawmill are raised from
the snow cover and the sawdust is thrown out
away from the sawing spot. This is an important quality in the winter, since sawdust acts
as a reinforcement and makes the snow hard as
stone. When you have finished you can easily
move the sawmill from the spot.
Mobile or stationary production

Many of our customers have their sawmill for

stationary use. You can also take your sawmill
with you and put it up on the spot where the

logs are, in the forest, on your backyard, or

anywhere else.
The Logosol Sawmill is easiest powered by
an ordinary chainsaw. The typical saw unit is a
Husky 390, which with its seven horsepower
and thin guide bar cuts the timber quickly
and gives a fine and smooth sawn surface.
With such equipment you can saw five metres
a minute from a 6 thick squared log. The big
electric saw unit, Logosol E8000, with automatic feeding, doubles the speed, and with the
bandsaw you can even saw 50 ft/min.
But technical data is one thing, working in
practise is another. The timber is not only to
be sawn up; it should also be stacked. In addition, new logs need to be rolled to the sawmill
and, above all, you need a coffee break now and
then. We who use the sawmill can from experience say that we produce between two and
four cubic metres sawn timber in one working
day, and if you get help from a friend you will
produce even more.
Good timber and a good feeling

You will appreciate the feeling you get by

working with quality timber that you have
sawn yourself. With the Logosol Sawmill M8,
it becomes a pleasure to cut it from your own
trees.
The best thing we can give to you who have
recently become a sawmill owner, is probably
the job satisfaction and pride you will feel
when you have finished your first project. This
is an investment that you will not regret, and
that is part of the warranty!

WoodWorkers Mill
New possibilities are opened up for woodworkers.
Around your neighbourhood there are
lots of timber, just waiting to be cut. In
towns and cities park trees are thrown
on the dump, and in the gardens fruit
trees are felled and burned on bonfires.
In the forest there are ash, sycamore,
pines, oak, and other types of trees that
many would class as brushwood, but we
woodworkers value so highly. It would
be a great shame not to take care of
these treasure chests of wooden workpieces.

Logosols Woodworkers Mill is a fantastic tool

that maintains very high quality down to the
last detail. Each component demonstrates selfconfidence. The Woodworkers Mill, which is
made of an anodized aluminium alloy, weighs
under 110 lbs and is completely maintenance-

12

Sawmills | Woodworkers Mill

free. Despite its low weight the Woodworkers

Mill lifts logs that weigh 1100 lbs, by a wide
safety margin. You can slice up the workpiece,
quarter saw it or cut rough-edged boards. You
can use the mill for edging or resawing, and
you can take diagonal cuts in different directions. There is an abundance of mounts and
accessories that enable you to adapt the Woodworkers Mill to different purposes. The limitations are few.
Reliable design

The construction is made of the same components as the M8 Sawmill. By shortening the
sawing length, you get a very sturdy and easy-tohandle frame for preparing woodworking material or different ways of special sawing. The sawing length is 8 ft, but you can easily cut smaller
logs, or extend it. Woodworkers Mill can easily

be upgraded to a M8 Sawmill. In its standard

version the sawing length will then be 16 ft.
Easy to use

The accuracy is impressive. You can produce

everything from beams to thin sheets for making tiny boxes. Logs are rolled onto the sawmill from a working height of 22. With the
built-in winches you can single-handed lift the
logs up to sawing height. The finished workpieces lie accessible at waist height and are easy
to lift off. As a result, you not only save time,
but also spare your back. The saw runs along
a stable guide rail and gives you good results
from the very start. Visible, plain scales and
fixed steps make the adjusting of the sawmills
settings both easy and accurate. This is thoroughly described in the manual that comes
with the sawmill.

4 Perfect squaring. The log clamps

press the project log against long,
fixed fences.
4 The log beds are independently
adjustable, thus minimizing wastage
of sawing material. The lifting system
has a capacity of lifting over a tonne.
4 Visible scales and fixed height
settings make adjustments easy and
accurate.

Powerful Automatic Feeder E37

The electric feeder E37 Friction makes
working with the Logosol Sawmill more
comfortable, and it significantly increases productivity.

One great advantage of the patent pending

friction clutch is that you can regulate the
speed of the saw or the Log House Moulder
by adjusting the feed pressure. When the resistance decreases, the speed is increased; and
when the resistance increases, the speed is decreased. The load on the cutting equipment
becomes more even since the speed immediately decreases when the chain saws through a
knot or swelling in the log.
Compatible with all Logosol Sawmills and
the electrical Log House Moulders and Logo
sols saws.

Tips on Chain
Sharpening:

The sharpening robot

assures you a perfect
sawing surface!

4 Sharpen before it
gets dull!
Sawing with a dull chain
puts a lot of stress on the
cutting equipment. It is
important to sharpen the
chain before it gets dull.

Logosol

Sharpening Robot
The sharpening robot revolutionizes
the work with chainsaw mills, and you
get the luxury of always having a perfect chain on your chainsaw. If you want
to, you can even take upon yourself to
sharpen your neighbours chains.

Besides sharpening automatically, it also

sharpens the chain amazingly well. Without
having any scientific evidence, we can state
that the edges of the cutting teeth feel sharper
than on a new chain, and this is clearly noticeable when you are sawing. It can sharpen
both 1.3 Picco chains and ordinary 1.6-3/8
chains or 0.325 chains. Both the top-plate
angle and the side-plate angle are adjustable,
so it sharpens ripping chains as well as crosscutting chains.
The machine sharpens one side of the chain
at a time. This means that after a while you
have to reset the angle of the sharpening head
and move the chain one tooth forward to
sharpen the other side of the chain. It sharpens

ten teeth per minute. Sharpening one chain

takes approx. 1.5 minute per side. Starting
and resetting the sharpening head take about
half a minute.
Every Logosol Sawmill owner knows that
you should sharpen the chain frequently, but
only file off a little, just so that the teeth get
their sharpness back. This is, of course, no
problem for the sharpening robot. What is
more impressive is that it can easily fix a chain
that has been damaged by nails in the timber.
Regardless of how much take-off you choose,
it will not burn the teeth.
When sawing, you do not always have acc
ess to electricity. Due to the fact that the robot is powered by 12 V you can run it with a
car battery. One battery is enough to sharpen
several hundred chains. You can also run it
with a starting aid for cars, which you can get
cheaply. An ordinary battery charger is also an
option. The sharpener comes with a detachable
power cable with strong clamps.

4 Sharpen it comfortably!
It is always easier if you have a comfortable
working place. Fasten the guide bar with a
clamp when sharpening, and use a filing vice
if you have an electric saw and are sharpening
manually.
4 Dont forget to change sprocket!
The best is if you alternate between four chains
using the same sprocket. When the chains are
worn out, you change the entire set including
the sprocket.
4 File the bar with a UKF edge file
If the chain has been damaged the guide bar can
get unevenly worn. File the bar rails equally high
with a UKF edge file.

File in time

4 Pferd file holder works well when

you are sawing unseasoned logs that are
no thicker than 16.

The first day we ran the PH260,

we made $1,000
By Dave Boyt

The Ozark mountains of Arkansas are rich with logging history and lore. With shortleaf pine and a mix of hardwoods including oak, hickory, ash, cherry and walnut, it
has provided lumberand jobs since the early 1800s. To this day, many old timers can
recall pulling logs out of the woods with horses, or working on sawmills powered by
steam threshing machines, tractors, and even Model A Fords.

amily run mills gave way to large modern,

high production mills. These mills typically cut one product, such as dimension
lumber for houses and railroad ties, producing
more than 50,000 board feet of lumber per day.
With the economic downturn, these large
mills are closing down. Sawyers like Dave
Barnes of Flippin, Arkansas are filling the void
left by the closures with small band saw mills,
and finding niches for specialty lumber that are
simply not feasible for a large production mill.
Operating under the colorful name Arkansawyer, or Arky, Dave and his crew of eight
cut timbers for post and beam houses, tongue
and groove flooring, siding, and just about anything else his customers request.
I started out cutting timbers for my own
place, and I discovered that I loved sawing, he
recalls. We started out with just the [WoodMizer] LT 40, under a pine tree in the summer

22

of 2006. In the afternoon, wed move the mill

around to the other side of the tree for shade.
Dave built a shed for the mill that winter. He
estimates that he has cut close to three millionboard feet of lumber since then.
Not long after setting up the mill, Dave
realized that he could increase his income by
processing the lumber into flooring and lap
siding. He purchased a Logosol PH260 planer/
moulder and a 15 planer. He opted for the single phase machine, and says that it has plenty
of power to do the type of work he needs. The
first day we ran the Logosol, we made $1,000.
We were tongue and gooving 1x 4 and 1 x 6
cedar for the ceiling of a resort. We never even
took the machine off the shipping pallet, and it
is still sitting on the pallet today.
It is one of those things that we could take
out of the box and make money with it that
day, he says.

The flexibility of the PH260 is a large part of

the reason he has been able to expand his business at a time larger mills are closing down.
This area used to have five pretty good sized
mills, but there are now only two left standing. They just cut ties and grade lumber. I cut
pine for timber framing posts and beams and
subflooring, and hardwood for flooring, trim
and doors. I saw cedar, pine, oak, hickory, and
walnut. We build two or three houses a year.
A deep pile of fresh planer shavings just outside the shed is testament to the amount of use
the PH260 gets. Dave pre-planes the boards
before putting them through the Logosol. We
usually [pre] plane the worst face of the board,
then put it down when it goes through the
Logosol.
That gives a smooth, straight surface. He
has found that this helps the Logosol operate
more efficiently in two ways. It eliminates high

places in the board that can ride up and bind

in the machine.
It also reduces wear on the bottom knives.
We just take 1/16 off the bottom on the Logosol, partly because those bottom knives are
the hardest ones to change, he explained. For
some jobs, Dave does not even use the bottom
cutters. I use this machine [PH260] for a lot
of rough ship-lap boards to put in cabins. The
customer wants the rough side out to make the
cabins look rustic on the inside. You just put
the shim plate in, but you dont turn on the
bottom cutter, take your cut off the top, and
ship lap the board.
Dave doesnt worry about straight line ripping before putting boards through the Logosol. After the board has gone through, its
straight. If theres a bump or knot on the edge,
if you just put that to the outside, the outside
cutter will take it right off. He says that the
side cutters can take off as much as 3/4 of material. Sharp knives are an important part of
equipment maintenance. I can do 8,000 feet
of oak or pine before I have to stop and sharpen
or replace the blades, said Dave.
He sends his straight blades to a local knife
grinder. He has found that he can sharpen the
side profile cutters with a belt sander and a fine

No, it is not snowing those are wood shavings flying from the Arkan
sawyers Logosol PH260!

belt. I take a little off the back side of the blade,

and I can get another run or two out of it.
He keeps the feed rate down to help make
the knives last longer. The side profile grinders are about $160 per set, and theyll do
10,000 feet of siding, so youre looking at less
than two cents of knife cost per board foot of
bevel siding.
His two years of experience with the Logosol have given Dave plenty of time to evaluate its performance. It does a good job, he
says. I cant afford a $50,000 machine to do
what a $15,000 machine does real well. Quick
setup and knife changing are important to his
business. If I dont have to change the bottom blade, setup time is about ten minutes,
he explained.
Right now, Im set up to cut 8 wide S4S
lumber, and Ive got to do five of them. Then
Ive got to do 6, then 4. All I have to do is
crank in the side cutter in for a narrower board,
then lock the cutter in place.
Selling directly to the end user instead of
a production yard makes it possible for Dave
to sell lumber that would normally be downgraded or rejectedat a higher price. For
example, blue stain is normally considered a
defect. But many of his customers like it so

much, they pay a premium for it. I even let

some logs sit through the summer to get blue
stain and worm holes for the customers who
want them. I call it buckshot denim pine,
Dave explained. I always tell people theyre
getting something special. You cant just go to
the lumber yard and get a piece of wood like
this. Every board is different here.
Its hard economic times, concludes Dave.
Theres a lot of mills everywhere going out of
business. The saving grace for me is the fact
that I am versatile. Im in an area where I have
more than just one type of wood supply, and
I have more than one market for the lumber.
He has even found that having a location on
a highway where people can see his mill operation once an irritation is now a benefit.
He put up a sign painted on an old circle saw
blade, and built a small office building next to
the planer shed to let people know where he is
and what he does. I have good craft market.
During the tourist season, I have ten thousand cars a day drive by. They pull their motor
homes up here, and we pack em full of walnut
or cedar.
He also has a web site that shows photos of
his mill, as well as lumber that he has for sale:
http://arkansawyer.net.

TimberJig in Ecuador
Jim Birkmeirer of Timbergreen Farm from
Spring Green, Wisconsin recently contacted Logosol about a project he was working on with the Kallari Cooperative in
Ecuador.

He was planning a training trip down to the

cooperative, and wanted to include a Timberjig
and a 36 Picco bar and ripping chain in the
mix of equipment he would be using to train
the cooperative members. As you may know,
Jim has a successful flooring business in Spring
Green, using the Logosol PH260 as the principle moulder for his finished products. He also
is a successful sawmiller and a forester, so he
knows his stuff when it comes to milling. But,
for this trip, he had to leave his big sawmill
behind, so he turned to Logosol to help with
the technology for this area where there were
no sawmills in place.
The Kallari Cooperative in Ecuador had been
milling lumber for years, but it was all done by
freehand milling with a chainsaw. Jim was going into territory where they knew their stuff
when it came to chainsaws.
Here are some of the comments he recorded
on his first day there:
There has never been a sawmill here Your
stuff is all wrong for here..
We all just saw logs with a chain saw our
men are very professional
It will overheat the engine, you need to
break off all the rakers.
I could do that much faster the way
I always do it
That is just firewood, we throw that all away...
Started his training

Then Jim started his training. After the first

big slabs began to be sliced off of logs that had
lain in the forest for years, Jim began to get
their attention. When he put the 36 picco bar
and ripping chain Logosol had sent with him on
the big Stihl, and the saw began to move faster
through the log, they really got interested.
And when they began to slice boards out of
scrap pieces of wood with the Timberjig, there

24

Making planks from

were hooked. Here is what the
cooperative Director had to say afterwards:
A couple years ago I thought it was impossible for us to create these large slabs of wood
from old logs, I couldnt comprehend how to
create value from something just laying in the
forest. I never imagined it would be this easy
we needed so little to get started. We did
not have the vision to use our scrap wood and
make it into something valuable like furniture.
I could see the finished product in books or internet, but didnt understand how to make it
from our trees. Now I feel like my eyes have
been opened with this lesson, as if we have
woken up from our slumber and can now initiate a new woodworking facility.
AlternAtive income source

Our families have a small income and wood is

something that will contribute to their overall
family earnings, it still makes a difference for
our village/community members.

It helps us rest at night as leaders, because our

job is to find a way to create alternative income
sources to the deforestation and contamination.
I also want to thank the companies
that donated the equipment and Timbergreen Farm for donating the chainsaw.
These tools will serve as a cornerstone for
the future woodworking business of Kallari.
(Elias Alvarado, Production Director: Kallari Cooperative in Tena, Ecuador)
proud partner

Jim had this to say about the experience:

It is rewarding to see the many changes this
cooperative is making, said Birkemeier. We
have been sharing ideas for 6 years. Elias will
stay in our home for 5 days in November, and
he will be able to see and try many new things.
What he will value and take home to his people is hard for me to predict, but we will have
some fun working together.

Gigantic trees and two small sawmills

Create Hope in Congo

Three years ago Frank-Anders Thoresens phone rang at home in Minnesund,
north of the Norwegian capital Oslo.
It was his childhood friend Willy Itomo.
This conversation led to Frank-Anders
starting up a sawmill in Congo.

Frank-Anders grew up in what is now the

Democratic Republic of Congo. His parents
Lasse and Else-Marit were missionaries in Bondo in the northern part of the country.
Bondo is forgotten when it comes to communications and other infrastructure. The area
can only be reached quickly by hiring a private
jet. The alternative is to walk, cycle or travel
by motorcycle the 535 kilometers from Kisangani through the jungle.
But two modern inventions have found
their way to Bondo: The mobile phone and the
internet. When Willy Itomo got access to a
mobile phone he called his childhood friend
in Norway.
Willy is a trained agriculturist and worked
on a forest project in Bondo. One of the things
they did was saw wood by hand, says FrankAnders.
The conversation resulted in Frank-Anders
promising to join the project and provide
some modern equipment. He considered different methods and decided that the only sensible thing to do was to saw the trees in the
jungle.
There arent any proper roads. Transporting the logs by truck to a stationary sawmill
would cost too much and destroy the land,
explains Frank-Anders.
He decided that the best alternative was
Logosols Big Mill LSG sawmill. He ordered
two of these plus some other equipment that
is impossible to buy in Congo. The chainsaws,
which are a large model not found in Scandinavia, were bought in Congo.
Frank-Anders flew to Congo with 76 kg of
baggage. That meant he was carrying an extra
26 kg over the weight limit. From the capital

Two Logosol Big Mill LSGs

hard at work in the Congo.

Kinshasa he flew onto Kisangani where Willy

and some friends were waiting with motor
cycles.
We drove for 49 hours over three days to
get to Bondo, with 70 kg of baggage on my
motorcycle, says Frank-Anders, showing
photographs from the dangerous journey that
featured broken-down motorcycles needing
extensive repairs in the middle of the jungle.
The sawmills they took with them were
put into production immediately. To start off
with, both were used in parallel, but then one
of them had to be taken out of use to provide
spare parts for the chainsaw.
But even at only half-capacity, this is still
much better than the previous method of pit
sawing, which means that the log is placed
over a pit and a standard hand saw is used,
with someone standing underneath the log in
the pit. It used to take four weeks to saw up a
log, now it is all done in just one day.
The Logosol LSG works perfectly. Its small
enough that it can be transported to the work
site by motorcycle and big enough to cope

with thick trees, says Frank-Anders.

Today the sawmill provides employment for
four people. They produce up to 3 cubic meters of timber per day, mainly from the iroko
and sapeli trees, the latter is also called mahogany. The timber is supplied exclusively to
the local market.
Customers are a Catholic mission, two hospitals, schools, a home for disabled people, and
the population of Bondo.
Its not even worth thinking about exports.
Partly because it would be too costly to do so
and partly, according to Frank-Anders and
Willy, because Congos raw materials should
first and foremost benefit the country.
There is an enormous need for wood. By
only operating on the local and regional market and using small-scale technology, we can
fell trees in a responsible way that doesnt
damage the environment, says Frank-Anders.
The town of Bondo has a population of
about 20,000 while around 200,000 people
live in the area as a whole.

Not milling is like leaving

a sack of money out to rot
Recently we heard from one M7 owner who had collected a bunch of logs in anticipation of doing a lot of milling, only not to have time to mill up the logs until
2 years later. Rainer Kern called to tell us what he found when he cut into some
hardwoods that had lain in place for several years. We discussed the value of
spalted wood, and we sent him some reference material on this kind of wood to
help him realize what he had found in these old logs. Here is his story:

hinking of what I have discovered makes me remember how I first got started
with using the M7 mill in the first
place.
Three years ago, I purchased
some land and immediately had
about ten acres of it cleared. What
was bulldozed was a mixture of
pines and hardwoods. The standard practice here is to push all the
debris into a pile, throw diesel on
the pile and burn it. It cost me
more money, but I had the dozer
operator stack both the pines and
hardwoods that were over a certain
size to keep them from getting
burned.
Save the cost

When asked what I was going to

do with the wood, I shrugged my
shoulders, unsure myself. I tried to
sell the logs to a logging firm, but
times were very good for them at
the time, so they did not want to
invest in the effort to load the logs
onto a logging truck.
I invested in your mill about
two years ago, because I didnt
like the alternative of having the
logs used for firewood. Two years
that have gone by, and I have had
the time to only mill the pine.
It is now that I am finally mill-

26

ing the hardwoods. Before I had

started milling the hardwoods, I
felt disappointed with myself for
having left these logs turn to rot.
In a way, it didnt feel any different than leaving a sack of money
out to rot. After all, the whole
idea of milling the lumber was to
save the cost of having to buy it
from a lumber yard.
The next thought was to run
these logs through a chipper to
make mulch. But because some
of these logs are too big to run
through a chipper, I used the mill
to cut them down into manageable
pieces. As I cut my first piece, the
wood wouldnt even let me take
out my frustration by throwing it
away. The wood was so rotten that
the wood broke in ten pieces, like
shattered glass, before I even had a
chance to give it a rebellious throw
of disgust.
Discovered spalted wood

The antipathy I felt of having let

the maggots and rain eat through
what would have been thousands
of dollars saved from having to
buy it from a mill was sickening. As I cut further down into
the wood, I got some satisfaction
of cutting the maggots and beetles
in half that had made this wood

their home over the last couple of

years.
It wasnt until my third cut, that
I discovered what you call spalted
wood. In fact, I thought it was just
a fluke in the wood until I noticed
the same uniqueness in the other
logs. Imagine the relief I felt of
knowing this wood being spared
from the chipper just to become
mulch. It is extremely rewarding
to see the time spent two years ago
being paid off, more than I could
have even imagined.
The word should get out so more
people can learn about this marvel.
Thanks for all the info and for
the Logosol hat. I think your
equipment and support is great.
Rainer later writes:
The curse of having such beautiful wood is deciding how to use
it. Typically when doing a wood
project, you make a best guess of
the amount of wood you need. If
you guess wrong, it is just the inconvenience of having to buy more.
True, the color tone may vary between stock piles, but nothing so
far off that a different shade of stain
cant fix.
With this spalted wood, if you
run out, thats it. Theres no lumber mill that that carries wood like

this. Best bet is to cut a tree down,

bury it and restart the project
in another year. So it has been
very difficult to decide for which
projects to use spalted wood. For
example, I milled my own solid
floor for a 1500 sf room last summer. I have enough spackled wood
to cover that, and the floor would
have looked awesome. But in the
end I choose to save the spalted
wood to make cabinet doors. It
was just too hard to let all the wood
go in just one project. And thats
the curse. When youve got a good
thing, its hard to let it go.
So, dont discard those old hardwood logs just because they look
rotten. They can produce some
of the best wood youve ever seen!
Thats one of the joys of milling
discovering what grains and patterns you will find within a log.

M5 Extreme Weather Milling in Alaska

A new cabin is being built on a lake 10
miles by snowmobile from the remote
town of Galena, Alaska. Galena, Alaska
is located 300 miles west of Fairbanks,
accessible only by air and by water in the
summer.

Longtime Galena resident, David Wightman

recently received a Subsistence Permit to build
a cabin on the site. He selected the Logosol
M5 as his sawmill of choice. While most of us
in the lower 48 avoid sawmill use in subzero
temperatures, David set to work on his cabin in
December. The simplicity of the M5 is pretty
good for bush Alaska, he said when asked why
he chose the sawmill. I can mill at sub-zero
temperatures with the M5, he added.
David is able to reach his cabin site in the
winter time by snowmobile. He had some logs
at his home in Galena he was able to mill to the
right sizes for the foundation, and when he got
the permit, he set about getting the foundation material milled. Once that was done, he
hauled mill and logs out to the cabin site and

28

Sawmills | Logosol M7

began construction. He is milling the rest of

the material for the cabin on site with the M5.
David has been sharing his progress with our
Logosol forum readers on Logosols website:
http://www.logosolforum.com/us/. This is one
of our most popular threads on the forum, with
readers encouraging David as he reports on his
progress.
David plans to mill all the material for the
cabin but the plywood subfloor and the metal
roof. He is using logs from the cabin site for
the rest of the material, with the M5 set up on
the edge of the frozen lake. He hopes to be
closed in by the time of breakup in mid may.
Then he will have to travel to and from the site
by water. He will travel 20 miles by river to
the site and then by canoe on the lake to his
cabin site. He says he will be able to take the
mill out by canoe.
This is definitely a portable mill, David
said about the M5. You can haul it with a
snowmobile, by canoe, and move it around easily by hand, he noted. He really likes the ability to work in the extreme cold temperatures.

If the saw will start you can cut lumber! he

says when asked how cold it is when he is milling. He estimates around -25 to -30 degrees
is where he doesnt go out in the cold. But,
its actually easier to work out here in the winter. No dirt and sand gets in the wood when
you are milling it, so your chains dont dull as
quickly. And we can get around by snowmobile in the winter time, he stated.
The cabin David is building is 12 X 20 and
will be used as a base for hunting moose and
waterfowl and for berry picking. The logs he
is milling for the cabin are spruce and average
20-22 in diameter on the base end. He has
used a Stihl MS660 with a 16 bar and ripping
chain and also a Makita Dolmar as a powerhead
on the sawmill.
David plans to keep reporting on his progess
on the forum, so look for updates as he keeps
working on the weekends to build this remote
wilderness cabin on the lake.

A PH260 Hard at Work

In the Heart of Louisiana
Rusty Savant is a hardworking sawmiller
in south Louisiana who has recently expanded into value-added-milling. He purchased a used PH260 a few years back, and
has since upgraded to the new Model 3
PH260. He has put this new PH260 to the
test, running thousands and thousands
of linear feet of flooring, siding, paneling, and casing mouldings in this rugged
4-head planer/moulder by Logosol.

Rusty has done some unique projects with the

PH260.
I have supplied all the lumber for siding for
the outside of several of my customers houses.
And in some cases the interior material too. I
take a project from the stump to the finished
product. I do the felling, the logging, the sawing, the drying, and finishing of the lumber,
he explained.
Sometimes I use reclaimed material that really makes some beautiful boards.
Hes also done the inside of houses with
reclaimed lumber. This stuff was reclaimed
fir, something you dont normally see around
here. he said. But once we milled it, it
turned into some beautiful paneling.
Does things like no other

Another unique project Rusty has done is

numbered paneling.
This is where you number each board as it
comes off the tree, he explained. Then you
have to keep up with it when you plane it. The
carpenters then put the paneling up according
to the order in which it was cut. The result
is a wall where you can see the pattern of the
tree spread out before you. When you take
care of the entire processing of the tree from
the stump to the finished boards, you can do
things like this that other specialized milling
companies cant do.
Rusty has good things to say about Logosol

and the PH260.

These
guys
know their machinery and stand behind it, he stated
emphatically. Ive
used this machine
to produce a lot of
material over the
past few years, and
it hasnt let me
down yet! I do everything right here
structural lumber, siding, paneling, v-groove

p. The kiln Rusty built is beh ched to the front of

A plywood making machine

Sometimes customers get a little confused

about his abilities, since he can supply everything for their projects.
He told us a humorous story about one customer who came back to ask him a question
after Rusty had just supplied him with a price
for everything for his new barn.
Can I get a price on your plywood? the
customer asked. Without missing a beat,
Rusty said, Well, shucks, my plywood making machine just broke a tooth, and I cant produce any right now! The customer explained,
I just thought since you had everything else, I
would just ask about plywood too.
Of course, Rusty didnt actually have a plywood making machine, but, who knows? Give
him time and he just might put one in. He
recently built his own kiln, which is now drying around 4000 ft. of oak for another flooring
project.

Logosols revolutionary
multi-head planer/moulders
Remember the good ole days
Remember when 4-sided Planer/Moulders were monsters of machines? These
were huge iron beasts that took up large
amounts of shop space and consumed
large amounts of energy to produce
small pieces of moulding and flooring.
And these big behemoths took hours
to set up! That was before Logosol introduced its revolutionary multi-head
moulders.

Logosol developed technology that put these

giants on a diet, and now a whole new generation of multi-head planer/moulders has resulted. Logosol reduced the size of their footprint,
lowered energy consumption, and made setup
much easier and quicker. And the material
produced by the new Logosol moulders rivals
any of the monster machines!
Revolutionary Designs

The Logosol planer/moulder lineup is truly

revolutionary. These machines represent years
of tooling and machinery innovations and
bring the power of precision milling to your
shop in a cost-effective way. The most tested
planer/moulder on the planet is the Logosol
PH260. This innovation and price breakthrough by Logosol brought 4-head milling
capabilities to thousands of small shops around
the world, making it possible for these operations to produce new products such as flooring,
trim, and mouldings. This added a new source
of income for these sawmill operators and now
many are much larger due to the addition of
this one machine to their machine lineup.

Logosol worked with many of these new planer owners to help them move into their new
role as moulding producers, and, of course we
learned a lot about producing moulders along
the way. We took these lessons and developed
new models and improvements to an already
proven concept. The PH260 has proven its
spot in the Logosol multi-head planer line and
it will continue to be a star performer.
NEW PH360

The new PH360 represents the culmination

of years of moulder innovation, providing the
best mix of power and precision to produce a
machine that will rival any of the larger footprint multi-head moulders in production,
operating costs, and setup time. And the in-

novation is not over! The PH360 is built so

yet another head will be available for the mill
shop that needs even more capability in their
moulder.
FULL Support

Logosol stands behind all of our planer/moulders with proven support and a full inventory
of parts and tooling. With a Logosol planer/
moulder you get an industry leading TWO
YEAR WARRANTY and lifetime support.
Our planer/moulder experts are available to
help you through setup and milling questions,
no matter what the situation. We have years

PH360 industry in sleek format

A stable four-head planer/moulder for
professional production. This completely new machine has its place in environments such as woodworking shops, timber yards, homebuilding facilities and,
naturally, in the construction trade. One
and the same machine can mould every
thing from fine trim work to timber
blocks with outstanding results.

The powerful cast iron table is the heart of the

machine, guaranteeing vibration-free operation. It is bolted onto a stable steel base with
solid foundation support. The bottom cutter,
side cutters and integrated feeder tables are
set into the cast iron table. The top cutter and
feed rollers sit in a separate support that is also
integrated into the cast iron table by way of
oversized trapezoidal bars.
Changes size according to material

If you are planing small materials, such as panels and strips, the top cutter support lays close
down to the table. If you want to feed in five-inch
housing timber, the top cutter support shifts to a
higher position above the table, and the machine
changes height both internally and externally.
The machine can shift up to 9 in height!

32

planers & joinery machines | PH360

It is often a good idea to try to get started

quickly with production when you get your
machine home. PH360 essentially requires
nothing more than a good chip extractor before you can get started with your first piece
of work. You can even mount it on wheels.
But this is a machine that is meant to have a
system built around it. The feeder tables are
at a set height so they are easy to extend and
adapt to manage the massive volumes of wood
the machine is capable of processing. Having
a fixed hose system for chip management also
makes for a significant improvement. Keep
things organised, clean and straight, and then
youll keep your productivity up!

a 40-amp supply for the Chip Extractor. Not

much electrical requirement, considering
such a large capacity machine.
We have taken several measures to make
it easier to get perfect results. Among other
things, the top cutter has a greater diameter
than its predecessor, and it has a double outlet
for chip extraction to keep things truly clean
and clear and reduce the risk of chip marking. The feeder table has a straight guide that
comes in handy when planing flooring, gluing
strips, or furniture. A larger and heavier machine is also an automatic advantage when it
comes to roughness.

Sufficient capacity

All the settings you need can be found on

the same side of the machine, which means
that the machine can be set up close to a
wall, thereby saving space. The handles that
set height and width have gauges, so you
can easily read off measurements down to a
fraction. The lever for rapid setting of the
straight guide is easily accessible from the
feed table, and therefore also close to the control panel. There is a separate start, stop and
lamp for each cutter and for the feeder unit.
We knocked off the entire wish list in one go!

Each of the machines cutters has its own

large motor, sufficient for every imaginable
type of processing of every possible type of
wood. Feed rate is continuously adjustable up
to 98 ft/min. A realistic feed rate for one person to handle is around 20 ft/min, while two
people can handle a speed of approximately
49 ft/min to keep up a smooth work tempo.
The machine can run on a 60-amp electrical supply. Keep in mind that power is also
drawn by the blower, so you should also have

ph260 a small planing mill

Four-cutter planer for small businesses or the serious DIY enthusiast
Producing panelling and moldings from
sawn lumber is a simple and profitable
way to refine wood. Logosol PH260
planes and molds four sides at once.
You can quickly and easily produce all
imaginable standard and custom-made
moldings. As it is easy to reset the cutters, PH260 is perfect for short customized series.

One difference between PH260 and traditional multi-cutter planers is that the upper
cutter and lower cutter are suspended in both
ends. Due to this, the machine is extremely
stable, even though it has considerably wider
cutters than most large planers. The machine
table, where the lower cutter and the side
cutters are fitted, is made of heavy cast iron.
The machine chassis is made of 5/32 sheet
steel.
It doesnt get any smoother

It is impossible to see any difference between

a board that is machined in Logosols planer/
molder and one machined in an industrial

34

machine costing tens of thousands. The only

difference is that the more expensive machine
is faster. With PH260 you can machine about
1600 linear feet per hour. With a large industrial machine the output is several yards per
hour. Logosols two year warranty also applies
to machines that is used for continuous industrial operation. The reliability of PH260 is
very high due to thermoguards that prevents
each of the five electric motors from being
overloaded
A wide range of moldings

PH260 can handle everything from timber

beams to picture frames. You can choose from
a wide range of standard molding knives or
order your own custom-made knives. Both
standard and specially designed molding
knives are reasonably priced.
Cut deeply

The cutters can handle sizeable depths. This

makes it possible to cut deep and beautiful
patterns. PH260 also has a remarkable capacity when it comes to poorly sawn lumber. The

upper cutter can plane to a depth of 3/8, plus

the molding depth, in one single operation,
and the side cutters can cut even more.
Use other cutter system

When delivered, the planer/molder is ready

for squaring. It is set up with HSS planing
knives in the upper and lower cutters, and 2
HSS planing knives in the side cutters. The
1 3/16 spindle diameter of the side cutters
enables you to choose from a number of other
cutter systems that are available on the market today.
Our customers

Many of our customers only have their PH260

SH410 Unique Perfomance

The Soloplaner resaws and moulds in one single operation
The Soloplaner has become much appreciated by woodworkers and sawmill
owners. The possibility of resawing and
moulding in one single operation has
solved a lot of problems and saved many
working hours.

The forerunner, the Soloplaner SH230, has

been a great success since its introduction
over 10 years ago. It has been much appreciated for its versatility and simplicity, which
make it almost indispensable once you have
experienced its benefits. In the successor,
Logosol has taken the sawing and planing
functions to a new level, which is even better suited for bigger projects and all types of
woodworking workshops with high standards.
Resaw through Thick and Thin

Originally, the machine was built for dimensioning of planks and boards in one pass. The
timber gets planed to the set thickness at
the same time as it gets resawn to the right
width. This function is spot on and feels indispensable in all building projects once you

36

planers & joinery machines | SH410

have got used to it. Plastic sheets on the machine table enable you to machine both dry
and wet wood without any problems with
feeding it through.
A Safe Resaw

The machine can also be used as a resaw

without the planing function. The Soloplaner
has attracted much attention from the building trade, since it eliminates the operation
that causes most serious hand injuries at
construction sites, namely the use of a resaw.
When using the Soloplaner, the workpiece is
quickly and safely fed through the machine
and is with accuracy resawn into the set dimensions.
Quarter Rounds from Boards

Use the full potential of the machine and fit

moulding knives in the cutter head. You can
resaw, square, plane and mould at the same
time! Examples of products that can be made
in one single operation are quarter rounds, floor
decking and some mouldings. More advanced
mouldings like panelling or crown mouldings
can require two or more goes through the ma-

chine. You can even produce wide floor boards

with tongue and groove!
Professionally Sturdy

The machine is built around a sturdy cast iron

table that is suspended by trapezoidal bars in
the steel chassis, which stands firmly on the
ground. A 5 hp motor runs both the cutter
head and the circular sawblade. The feeder is
run by a separate motor with bevel gear. The
heavy design with vibration absorbing cast
iron ensures accurate resawing and a perfect
planing result.
Adapt the Machine to the Business

The machine is ready to use in its basic design,

the circular sawblade and the planing knives
are fitted and set so you can quickly get started
with your production, but there are already a
number of accessories for the machine. Extra
side stops and extension tables for the in- and
out-feed side, adjustable feeding speed and, of
course, hundreds of moulding knives to choose
from. SH410 can take upper cutter knives
with 3/4 protrusion, exactly like our largest
planer/moulder Logosol PH360!

Exactly as in the case of PH260, the DH410 is easily operated from a control panel. Ability to start each of the cutters
separately.

Sturdy in- and out-feed tables that follow the setting of the
machine table.

DH410 planer with

a width of 12 7/8
Logosol DH410 has a lot in common
with our PH260. The machine is built
on the same principles and most of its
components are the same as PH260s,
which means that it is a very stable
machine with a cast-iron machine table and separate motors for each cutter
and the feeder. Both the machines also
have the same type of knives and cutter
heads.

The difference is that DH410 works with two

cutters instead of four. Four-sided planing is
made by running the board twice through the
machine, while you only machine the board
once when planing and dimensioning two
sides up to a width of 12 1/4 and a height of
3 15/16.
The DH410 is primarily bought by customers who want a machine that can produce
the same result as a four-sided planer/moulder,
but can accept that the production takes a
little more time. One advantage of the DH410
when compared with the PH260 is that you
get a reliable planer with a width of 410
mm. Some of our customers have rebuilt the

Producing beaded tongue

and groove with the DH410

STEP 1: Mount moulding knives in

the side cutter. Set the height so
that it is about 1/8 higher than the
finished product. By using the fence,
set the width so that it is 1/8 wider
than the finished product. Machine
the board! Now, one side is ready
and the underside is planed.

DH410 to make it possible to plane tapered

boards for flooring or panelling.
The machine can also be used as a vertical
mill with feeder. If you do not want to plane
the top side of the board, you replace the steel
rollers with rubber rollers.

Step 2: Mount the other sides

moulding knives in the side cutter.
Mount two moulding knives in the
horizontal cutter. Set the height by
adjusting the table, and the width
by adjusting the fence. Turn the
board over and machine it! Now,
you have a finished beaded t&g!

Start and stop. No resetting between jointing

and planing operation. It cannot get easier than
this.

By using a lever, the front jointer table can quickly be adjusted for cutting depths of between 0
and 7/16.

Use the jointer on the upper machine table and

then use the planer on the lower table. Entirely
without resetting!

Jointer/planer H410
It does not require resetting between jointing and planing operation.
A jointer/planer is the base of the joinery
shop. When you are jointing or planing
the timber you are laying the basis for
the following work. The better planer,
the better final result you will get. So,
this is a machine that is well worth going in for.

Logosols jointer/planer is built the same way

as the professionals many times more expensive machines. It has precision-processed machine tables of cast iron, a stable side fence and
double motors. Here you find the power to
joint and plane the hardest sorts of wood.
Heavy precision in a compact format

With the help of a lever the front jointer table

can quickly be adjusted for a cutting depth of
between 0 and 7/16. The rear jointer table
can be micro-adjusted. The table is fully 12
wide, which allows jointing of wide and thick
timber. The side fence is very stable and can
be adjusted from 0 to 45 degrees. Since you do
not have to alter the machine between jointing

40

planers & joinery machines | H410

and planing operation, you can rely on the machine to keep its settings. Other planers have
to be altered between jointing and planing
operation. With this jointer/planer you do not
have to fold away the jointer table or remove
the chip outlet. You just plane immediately
after the jointing without even turning the
motor off! This will, of course, save you a lot of
time, and at the same time you get outstanding precision and capacity.

ft 3 per minute. As an option, there is also a

stepless, adjustable feeding which feeds 7-39
ft per minute.
The cast iron construction of the machine
gives high stability, increased durability and
excellent precision. The sturdy design makes
it safer for you as an operator when using the
machine. A solid and accurate machine minimizes the risk of vibrations and dangerous
sudden moves in the workpiece.

Stable planer

A small-scale professional machine

The planer, which is below the jointer table,

machines workpieces that are 410x260 mm.
The feeding is done with double rollers, the
first one of ribbed steel, the second of rubber.
Smaller machines often have only one motor
that runs both the cutter and the feeding.
This is a cheap construction which most often
works pretty well. But to get increased power,
reliability and flexibility, the jointer/planer
H410 has, like our larger machines, separate
motors for the cutter and the feeding. In its
basic version H410 has a feeding speed of 19

The jointer/planer H410 is the choosy hobby

joiners dream, but it is actually dimensioned
for small joinery workshops. Here, it will
really show its true potential. If you, for instance, have a cabinet making shop, and need
to produce several special details from different wood types, this machine is an excellent
aid. The powerful feeding, and the reliability
and speed that the switching between jointing and planing gives, ensures that the planer
will be a long-term and profitable investment.

multi-planer MH410
No resetting between jointing, planing and moulding.
Logosols multi-planer is a jointer, a planer and a moulder in one and the same
machine. Furthermore, you can use it
as a vertical milling machine equipped
with a feeder unit. Unleash your creativity the possibilities are endless!

eration. This gives you a machine that does not

require any resetting between jointing, planing and moulding. It is this unique combination that gives you all the possibilities!

To start with, you have a perfect jointer/planer,

but it is also equipped with a side cutter. The
construction is completely unique. You plane
the width and thickness in one single operation. With the side cutter you can also mould
the timber. This means that you can make
tongued and grooved flooring, for instance.
When you are using the machine as a moulder,
you machine the timber twice in order to process the workpiece on all four sides. Compare
this with a standard jointer/planer or a vertical
milling machine, in which you have to machine the workpiece at least four times.

The efficiency and the precision increase dramatically when using the multi-planer instead
of a traditional jointer/planer or a vertical
milling machine. The reason for this is that
the workpiece first is machined on two sides
by the jointing operation, and then it can be
planed and mould on the remaining two sides
in one single operation. This is of great use to
you if you, for example, are producing joinery
components.
You do not need any extra floor space, since
you at a reasonable price get both efficiency
and several valuable operations in one and the
same machine. Due to this the multi-planer
MH410 is the natural choice for you who require high efficiency and precision.
When delivered, the horizontal cutter is
equipped with two planing knives, but the

cutter can take a total of four planing knives.

So, you can mount two additional knives when
you want an extra fine surface finish. Normally, the two additional knife slots are used for
moulding knives. Even though the maximum
protrusion of a moulding knife in the horizontal cutter is 1/8, it is possible to produce several different profiles on the plane side of the
workpiece.
Reliable feeding

In its standard design the machine is equipped

with two ribbed steel rollers in front of the
cutter and a rubber roller on the out-feed side.
If required, the machine can be equipped with
only rubber rollers. A separate motor runs the
feed rollers via a robust chain transmission,
which gives a very reliable feeding. A steplessly adjustable feeding is available as an option.
The entire machine is built around the
heavy cast iron table to give as high stability and durability as possible. The machines
simple but robust design makes it secure and
easy to survey so that you can feel safe while
operating it.

We lay great stress on your safety. That is why

the SUVA guard is included when you buy
Logosol PS315.

The stable carriage runs on 16 tempered steel

balls with an impressive diameter of 3/4.

The saw comes completely equipped with a universal saw blade of 12 7/16 and an extension
table for the sliding table.

Dimensioning Saw PS315

An extremely stable dimensioning saw with high precision.
Every hobby joiner who has a table saw
knows that the saw does not always deliver the expected precision. At the same
time, everyone who has bought boards
or laminates sawn by a professional
knows the value of millimetre precision and straight edges with even surfaces. The pros use dimensioning saws
that cost as much as a new car. Logosols
dimensioning saw gives exactly the
same results, but at a considerably lower
price.

Logosols dimensioning saw is in the main

built from one single piece of sturdy cast iron,
which gives excellent stability and vibration
damping. The precision-processed saw table,
next to the circular saw blade, goes down under the sliding table, which means that all
parts that affects the sawing are connected to
the cast iron table. The table is supported by a
firm steel-sheet under frame.
The heavy and stable sliding table runs
on sixteen tempered steel balls with the impressive diameter of 3/4. The balls run in

44

Planers & joinery machines | PS315

tempered steel tracks in an aluminium profile, which is firmly bolted to the cast iron.
This design gives a stable and almost unreal
smooth movement, even in the dustiest environments.
Saw blade and fence

The circular saw blade can be precision adjusted both in height and angle (0-45 degrees). It
is vibrationlessly run by a quality motor of 4
hp via a Poly-V belt. When maximally loaded
the motor delivers nearly 8 hp.
The resaw fence, which runs along a steel
bar, has micro-adjustment for fine-tuning the
width in tenths of a millimetre. The fence can
be mounted standing or lying, depending on
the height of the workpieces to be sawn. The
angle fence on the sliding table can be mounted on both sides of the table, so that you can
choose between pushing the workpiece with
the fence or pushing the workpiece against the
fence. All sawing angles are, of course, adjustable.
The dimension saw PS315 comes completely equipped with a universal saw blade

of 12 7/16, a stable SUVA guard for the saw

blade, an extension table for the sliding table
and the out-feed table. There is a chip extractor connection under the saw blade, and also
the blade guard can be connected to a chip
extractor. As accessories there are additional
extension tables for the sliding table, clamping devices and saw blades suitable for different purposes.
A small-scale professional machine!

Logosol offers small-scale machines that do

the same job as large industrial machines, only
they are smaller in size and lower priced. Logosols dimensioning saw cuts as well as larger
professional machines. What makes our dimensioning saw different from industrial machines is that it is not optimal for large-scale
production where large work-pieces are machined. However, Logosols dimensioning saw
suits smaller joinery shops or other businesses
that work with small-scale wood processing
and have high quality requirements on their
products.

has or what tool is used. The fences can also

be moved laterally to fit the size of the tool.
In addition, the machine has a big and stable
carriage, which enables you to secure the workpiece for processing of the highest precision.
Three additional machines

As a vertical milling machine the multimoulder MF30 gives you more for the money;
more than you get from any other machine.
And into the bargain you get three additional
machines. The secret of it is that the entire motor unit with the spindle can be tilted through
270 degrees! This gives you:
A tenoning machine with tiltable spindle.
A long-hole drill with tiltable spindle.
A plunge router with tiltable spindle.
You have four machines with five functions in
the same shell. This gives you possibilities that
otherwise would require a whole assembly of
machinery, so you save both time and space.
There are a great number of accessories and
tools for the machine. When using the vertical

milling machine MF30, you can shape wood

however you like.
The tiltable vertical arm makes the machine
easy to use and leads to fewer work steps as the
machine can be adjusted for the work at hand.
There are accessories available for all sorts of
requirements. For instance, there are extensions for the carriage and the table, a kit for
curve mouldings, feeder unit, etc. You work
in comfortable work postures and can concentrate on realizing your dreams from wood!
High quality gives safety and precision

The entire machine is built around the heavy

cast iron table to give as high stability and durability as is possible. The fences and the carriage are strongly built to give the best precision possible. The machines simple but robust
design makes it secure and easy to survey so
that you can feel safe while operating it. The
simplicity also makes it extremely reliable in
service.

The Flooring Factory

We have what you need, starting from the log right to the end T&G
Formerly, you had to have expensive
industrial machines for producing
mouldings and wood flooring. Logosol
changed this 15 years ago when introducing the first planer/ moulder that
was reasonably priced.

The result you get is at least as good as the

products the DIY store offers. But if you
want to produce wood flooring of the highest
class there are two unsolved problems:
Wood flooring has to be dried down to
a moisture level of 10-12 percent. Air drying takes a long time and the timber can get
warped and crack.
Today there is no good small-scale
method for rationally producing tongue and

groove on the ends of the flooring boards.

Below is how Logosol solves the
problems:
Fence with clamps and moulding knives
for producing end tongue and groove in
MF30. Put two boards together so that their
top sides face each other.. Then you mill both
simultaneously, and you get the exact same
result each time. The knife also makes the
edges beveled.
The Sauno kiln. It dries the timber using high temperature and steam, exactly as
the compartment kilns at the large sawmills.
The method is also called relax drying. A welltried construction that has been on the market
for almost 20 years. You can only get a genuine
wood feeling from a solid wood floor. Now you
can make the floor yourself.

More fixing plates and
guards are included in

Stack Cutter PK1500

Cut board stacks cost-effectively with impressive precision
The stack cutter cross-cuts board stacks
with great accuracy. The 59, 53 or 47
long guide bar is steered by the bar nose
holder. The chain is an standard 3/8
cross-cut chain driven by our powerful
6 hp, 3-phase electric motor E5000.

In line with Logosols philosophy, we have examined a function that earlier cost a fortune
to accomplish, and produced a smaller and
lighter solution. In this case a stack cutter that
takes the cut linearly vertically, a feature that
normally only found in larger industrial machines. The advantages of cutting linearly is
that the capacity significantly increases both
as regards sawing speed and the size of the
board stack. Logosols stack cutter has a relatively low weight since it is mainly made of
aluminium. Three large wheels make it easy to
move the machine by hand. One of the wheels
is adjustable in height, and with the help of
fixed sight the cut can be aligned. With the
stack cutter comes a 6 ft 7 long measuring
rod, which is a good means of measuring the

52

length of the stack.

Why spend time cutting the boards one by
one? With Logosols stack cutter you cut the
entire board stack at once. Just adjust it to the
desired length and then let the stack cutter do
the job, quickly and efficiently. What used to
take a whole day can now be done in half an
hour; what used to take an entire week you can
accomplish in half a day. It is easy, it is fun and
you can spare time for doing other things.
If you regularly cut large amounts of timber
into length, the easiest way is to do it with a
stack cutter. It saves time. You are also spared
from monotonous tasks that strain your body.
Logosols mobile stack cutter does not take up
a great deal of room, and by quickly cutting
the stacks so that they are more easy to handle,
you will save even more space.
As Logosols stack cutter is such a small investment, it will be profitable already when
cutting small volumes.
With Logosols stack cutter you can cut
your board stacks with an accuracy down to
+/- 3/32. This is due to our portal technique,

INDUSTRIAL MACHINES | Stack Cutter PK1500

where the guide bar is fitted at both ends. The

accuracy is significantly better than comparable stack cutters that have turnable guide bars,
i.e. radial cutting.
*Adaptor for 47 or 53 guide bars is included.

What is good about having

a Circular Resaw is that you
either saw the timber yourself, or you buy timber of a
few dimensions, and then
you resaw it to the required
dimensions when you actually
need it. This way, the circular
resaw facilitates the handling
of building timber, since there
will be fewer boards that need
to be dealt with before you are
going to use them. A considerable supply of large-sized
building timber of different
qualities, gives you infinite possibilities
of resawing to the dimensions you need
or the material your customers require.
With Logosols circular resaw you get highprecision results. You can be certain of getting
the correct dimensions and a fine surface! The
sawing speed is adjustable and is set so that
you can easily manage the operation single-

handed. If you use the highest feeding speed,

however, you will need help in order to manage! The machine works on both seasoned and
fresh-cut timber. The machines construction
is based on simple technology and is therefore
extremely reliable in service. The circular resaw is also designed with the stress on personal
safety, so that you can feel safe when working
with the machine.
Large-scale planer mills use bandsaws when
resawing timber. These are really large machines with wide saw blades, impressive capacity, and an extremely small saw kerf. Compared
to the type of band resaw that can be a possible choice for the small-scale wood processor,
Logosols Circular resaw has clear advantages.
The circular saw blade cuts straight, and you
can saw tens of thousands of metres without
doing anything about the circular saw blade.
With a bandsaw or a band resaw you have to
replace the saw blade several times during the
same period of time. When it is time to change
saw blade, you replace it with just a few simple
operations!

Sauno Energy-Efficient Drying

IN MOST CASES timber can be left to dry
outdoors for several weeks before being used
for building, but if you want to dry it thoroughly
and quickly, your own kiln
can be useful. The Sauno
wood kiln dries with the
0 mm.
Kiln box, messures 2400x1200x60
aid of steam at high temperatures. It releases tension and produces straight
lumber without cracks. The
Sauno unit dries timber
ready for furniture-making
in one week. The kiln box
is ordered separately, but
you can also build your
own box. Assembly instructions are always included.

PLEASE NOTE: Oak and other hardwoods

containing high amounts of tannin, should
be air dried down to 20% first before using
in these kilns. The high amount of acid can
damage kiln controls.

Award Winning Log Turner

Logosols patent solution makes log handling easier.
When working with the Logosol Sawmill, you spend about half the time rolling timber to the sawmill and taking
care of the sawn timber. Consequently,
we saw an opportunity to considerably
increase the daily output with an improved equipment for handling logs.

Re c o m

Whenever you are going to roll or turn a log,

no matter if it is on the Logosol Sawmill, in the
forest or on the timber stack, this tool will really
do itself justice. Comparing ordinary cant hooks
with the log turner is the same as comparing the
adjustable spanner with a reversible ratchet. You
keep the log in a firm grip through the whole
process, which makes it impossible for the log
to roll back when you take a new grip. Furthermore, you can turn the log a little bit at a time
and work with your knees, which spares your
back and makes you incredibly strong.
