Introduction

Thestabilityandsecondorderstaticanalysisofcolumnslaterallysupportedonanelasticfoundationingeneralised

forsuchanalysis,suchastheconstructionofpilefoundations,railroadtracks,bridges,thinrevolutionshells(pressure

theproposedapproachcanbeusedforstudyingawiderangeofproblemsrelatedtoelasticstabilityandsecondorder

Hetenyi(1967)outlinedtheclassicalprocedureforresolvingtheelasticstabilityofprismaticcolumnshavinghinged

Summaryandconclusions
Ananalyticalmethodhasbeenpresentedforevaluatingthecriticalbucklingaxialloadofcolumnshavingsidesway
uninhibited,partiallyinhibitedandtotallyinhibitedandlaterallysupportedbyauniformlydistributedelasticfoundation
(Winkler'smodel).Theproposedcolumnclassificationandcorrespondingstabilityequationsweregeneraland

Thebucklingloadisobtainedbymakingthedeterminantofa4x4matrixequaltozeroforcolumnshavingsidesway

anditsequationscanbeprogrammed,facilitatingcalculationsandefficientcomputercodingandavoiding
cumbersomeprocedures.Itshouldbeemphasisedthattheproposedmodelisjustanapproximationoftherealload

Theanalyticalresultsindicatedthattheeffectsofauniformlydistributedlateralsupportofmagnitudeksbecamemore
significantincolumnshavingfreeendsthanincolumnshavingbothendsrestrainedagainstrotationandsidesway.
Thebucklingloadofacolumn,laterallysupportedbyaverysoftelasticfoundation,couldbesubstantiallyincreasedby
eitherrestrainingitsendsagainstrotationorbybracingbothendsagainstsidesway.
