Congratulations to Spencer Johnson for getting his 100th high school career win Dec. 6
at Gilbert! Pictured with Spencer Johnson are the Southeast Valley wrestling coaches.

Gilbert Duals difficult;

Johnson wins 100th match

A short handed SE Valley squad took to
the mat Saturday, Dec. 6 at the Gilbert Duals.
The Jaguars competed hard but came up short
in their duals finishing in 6th place.

Six teams battled for the Dual Meet
champion crown with AGWSR eventually
claiming the title going 5-0 for the day.

Spencer Johnson won his 100th career
match by pinning Belmond-Klemme Juan Giddo in the third period. Johnson is a two-time
District qualifier.

The hosts, the Tigers of Gilbert claimed
runner up honors. Individually, four senior wrestlers finished 4-1 for the day: 113 lbs., Spencer
Johnson; 145 lbs., Caleb Hemmestad; 170 lbs.,
Riley Rittgers; and 182 lbs., Tom Nahnsen.

Freshman 132 lbs., Trey Lawrence went
3-2; Freshman 106 Koltan Klingson went 2-3;
Freshman heavyweight Matt Ross finished 1-2
in varsity competition. Sophomore 220 lbs.,
Tristan Troutwine completed the day 0-3.

Junior 170 lbs., Zeke Miller went undefeated in JV action going 3-0. Senior Ryan
Collen and Tristan Troutwine also won a match
in JV action.

Overall the guys wrestled fairly well.
Everybody won a match at Gilbert, which was

fun to see. We were shorthanded again with

only eight guys in the Varsity lineup because of
illness, so winning a dual becomes difficult, but
the guys battled hard.

Our older guys have to work on finishing matches late in the third period. Spencer
lost a close bout with 5th ranked Dante Taccia
of Iowa Falls 4-2 and Riley lost a close battle
in the third period. Caleb continues to improve
with his technique and positioning.

JH boys basketball
team wins road game

By Coach Valentine

On Monday, Dec. 1 the Southeast Valley Jaguars JH Boys Basketball team loaded the
bus and headed to Glidden to take on the Wildcats of Glidden-Ralston.

The Jags were coming off the Thanksgiving holiday break and ready to get back on
the court to play the first of three games for the
week. Southeast Valley got off to a slower start
compared to the first game they played and took
a 8-0 lead after the first quarter.

In the second quarter the Jags were outscored by the Wildcats by one but took a 16-9
halftime advantage. In the third quarter the Jags
scored 14 points compared to G-R's 4 and to a
30-13 advantage and went on to win the contest
37-21.

Leading the scoring for the Jags was
Chase Swieter with 13, Carter Lane followed
with ten. Jared Kastendieck had six points;
tHunter Kruse, four, and Lincoln Clay and Ross
-Halligan each had two points each for the Jags.
,
Coach Valentine commented by saying
it was great to get back on the court and play.
nWe were a little rusty at the beginning of the
-game and the zone defense that Glidden-Ralston
-played presented some problem with execution
pbut it was another good team victory.

The good old days?

As I write this I am sitting in cozy
warmth and the world outside is going around
without me. I was getting ready to go up to
church where we are preparing for the first Sunday of Advent, getting the bulletins printed and
folded and getting things ready for people to
come in a decorate on Saturday. I had planned
to finish a project of my own, the theme tree
I had been putting up during Advent for quite
a few years. This year it is loaded with colorful soft, fuzzy teddy bears wearing bright and
various colored hand crocheted scarves. The
theme is Have a Beary Merry Christmas.

All year long we get involved in many
different missions to help others in our community and in the world around us. Our missions continue at Christmastime, especially by
helping a local community center fill the many
Christmas boxes they give out and collecting
coats, mittens, hats and scarves. But, I also
feel the church needs a present too. Each of
the bears has a tag on it with an item needed
by the church, things such as different cleaning supplies, various size garbage bags, paper
goods, Styrofoam cups, plates, bowls, carry
out containers (we eat a lot around our church

the chores were done and breakfast was ready.

I was also fortunate out there on that
farm. We had no bathroom (not a lot of the
farm houses did back then) but I had a great
Dad who spoiled me and Mom and transported the thunder mug back and forth on that
path just to the north of the house. He also
hauled in the drinking/cooking water from the
well which was a jaunt from the house. We
did have a cistern pump for water for dish
washing and washing ourselves. That cistern
was also handy for the wash out in the wash
house. Water had to be pumped in the house
and transported to the boiler on the old cook
stove out there but that was quite a bit closer
than going to the well. Also soft water creates more suds and rinses the clothes better
than the hard well water. In the summer the
clothes were hung on the outside lines which
were quite a few steps from the wash house.
In the winter they were toted into the house,
through the kitchen, into the dining room and
up the stairs to the spare room where lines
were set up for winter use. Some ladies liked
to hang the sheets, pillow cases and unmentionables on the outside lines even in the
winter. They were just sure that the cold and
freezing process which was bound to occur
kept them whiter, especially on a sunny day.
Does anyone else remember seeing long johns
on the clothes line all frozen stiff looking as if
they could stand alone? Now we sometimes
gripe because we let the clothes pile up and
we gripe more because it takes a bit longer to
get our laundry done in the automatic washers
and driers. Also when one of those appliances
breaks down youd think the world had come
to an end, especially if a trip to the Laundromat had to be made before the disabled appliance could be repaired or replaced.
We are certainly spoiled today. Yep, I
believe I have become a namby-pamby. Some
days I dont like to go out in the cold even
though I can go to my window, hold a little
box in my hand, aim it at my garage door a
few steps away, press the button and up goes
the door. Then I take another little device, aim

Seventh, Eighth grades played hard. . .

The Southeast Valley Jaguar JH Basketball teams opened their seasons against two
very tough Newell-Fonda teams. The Seventh
grade lost a heart breaker in a defensive battle
by a score of 25-26.

Cassie Berglund played an outstanding
game and finished the night with 14 points. The
girls also got an outstanding hustle from Jaynie
Ferrari, Maggie Anderlik and Viatris Scott.

The Eighth grade dropped a 45-26 decision to the Mustangs though the ladies battled
hard all night. Maddy Jaeschke led the way
with 14 points and Morgan Castenson right behind with six.

The Jags also got an outstanding defensive play from Shelby Cummins and Sammy
Alphs. Cassidy Lambert also had a strong night
on the boards.

It's Your Life...

Elberta Adkins, Gowrie, was City

Clerk, ambulance co-founder
Meets husband at Laramar Ballroom. . .
By Cassidy Riley

In 1929 the world was a
very different place. The Academy
Awards were held for the first time.
Russia was still the Soviet Union.
And the roaring decade collapsed
and all that could be heard was the
moans of those suffering from the
Great Depressionthe result of
the stock market crash.

In the midst of the events
that have left impressions on pop
culture and history books, Elberta
(Adkins) Licht, Gowrie, was born
at her house in Deer Creek Township. Living on a farm, Adkins
said her family was fairly self-sufficient.

We canned practically everything that wed have, she said.
We didnt go into town and buy
anything.

Her familys property had
cherry and apple trees and her
grandfather had a smoke house for
butchered meat.

Adkinss childhood coincided with the Great Depression.
While she said her family didnt
have much, she cherished what
was given to her. To this day the

tea set she played with as a girl sits

in a case in her living room. She
said her Shirley Temple doll is still
in its box.

We didnt have everything like kids today, she said.
We had bare minimum and we
were happy.

She said sources of entertainment were different in her
childhood than they are now.
Mostly she would play games with
her five siblings or put puzzles together. However, she remembers
her family going to the movies on
occasion. She particularly remembers going to Gone with the Wind,
which she said was a great movie.

The reason I remember it
is we went to so few, she said.

She said her educational
experiences were also different when compared with todays
schools. There were no sports for
girls and very few other extracurricular activities.

Her high school years were
also a very trying time for her family because her oldest brother Edgar was in the United States Army
during World War II. She said she

was stationed throughout the war
other than she distinctly remembers he was on a ship going to
Japan when the war was declared
over and he was able to return
home.

During his service the family wrote letters back and forth.
Adkins still has a silver bracelet
with an engraving of her name her
brother made for her during the
war. He sent one to each of her
sisters as well. The back is marked
Luzon P.I., which Adkins suspects means he was stationed in
the Philippines.

I know it really hurt [my]
mom, she said. It was hard for
families to be split.

When the war ended her
father took Adkins and her siblings
to Fort Dodge where people were

celebrating the end of the war.

A lot of people gathered
in the street in Fort Dodge, she
said. People were happy. Everybody was happy to be there celebrating it.

Adkins graduated from
high school in the spring on 1946,
almost a year after the war ended.
By the fall of that same year she
was taking classes at University of
Northern Iowa to become a teacher but she would never get her degree.

After two quarters she left
school because she was unable to
get into the classes she wanted and
she took a job doing bookkeeping
for a hardware store in Fort Dodge.
Her life in Fort Dodge eventually
led her to her future husband, Willis Adkins.

Adkins...

continued from page 6...

Willis Adkins and Elberta Licht met at the Laramar Ballroom in Fort Dodge where she would
go dancing with friends. They were married in
1949. In the first few years of their marriage she
and Willis Adkins moved around to different
farm houses. It wasnt until 1956 when the couple moved into the house she calls home today.

Elberta Adkins worked several jobs in
Gowrie while raising a family of threetwo
girls and one boyincluding 35 years as the
bookkeeper for Gowrie Municipal Utilities.

During her time at the utilities plat Elberta Adkins accumulated many memories. She
said one year she especially remembers was
1991 when an ice storm took down a power line
northeast of town. She said people were without
power for a week.

She said she remember two cars that hit
the building because the owners left them running while they were inside paying billsone
even damaged the bricks on the building. However, she said her funniest memory was something she heard about rather than witnessed her-

self.

Men from the utilities plant went to
check a local womans water meter that was inside her house but she never came to the door.
They were concerned she may not be alive so
the men called the Sherriff. The Sherriff attempted to climb through her kitchen window
when she came and started hitting them with a
broom.

Ill never forget that day, she said
smiling.

While working at the utilities plant she
was also involved in the community. She was a
member of the Womens Auxiliary for Veterans
of Foreign Wars until they disbanded and donated the building to the city to become the community center. She was city clerk from 1971 to
1989 and she was a founding member of the
Gowrie ambulance service, which she served
until she was 62.

One of the best things about my job is
I was right close to home, she said. I didnt
have to drive out of town to go to work.

Elberta Adkins said her family has always been the most important thing in her life
and she always strived to be involved in her
childrens lives by going to sports eventsin-

cluding her daughter Elaines softball games.

She dearly loved softball, she said.
They went to state one year and it was a great
day for all of us parents.

She said it was always important to her
to actively participate in her childrens lives because they help make a family a family.

I cant imagine a family without children, she said.

Southeast Valley falls

short at Coon Rapids

Southeast Valley grapplers kicked off
their inaugural wrestling season at Coon Rapids Tuesday night against Manson NW and the
Crusaders of Coon Rapids. The Jaguars opened
the season with the Cougars from Manson falling short in the dual 41-30.

In the 2nd dual of the night, the Jags fell
to CR-B 57-17. Going 2-0 for the night were
106 lbs. Koltan Klingson, 113 lbs. Spencer
Johnson, and 132 lbs. Trey Lawrence. 160 lbs.
Riley Rittgers and 182 lbs. Tom Nahnsen went
1-1 and 145 lbs. Caleb Hemmestad, 170 lbs
Zeke Miller, 195 lbs. Lee Fishbaugh, 220 lbs.
Tristan Troutwine, and Hwt. Matt Ross competed hard for the night.

The guys have been working hard in
the room on technique, positioning, and wrestling hard in the room. They battled but fell
short in some of their matches. We are pretty inexperienced in the top of our lineup with freshman and sophomores.

We were missing Tony Crampton at
Heavyweight because he has been battling an
illness. Plus, the team has four weight classes
that we had to forfeit, making it difficult to win
duals. It was a good test to see where we need to
improve.

This is an alert about your drinking water and a cosmetic dental problem that might
affect children under nine years of age. At low
levels, fluoride, which occurs naturally in the
ground waters, can help prevent cavities, but
children drinking water containing more than
2.0 milligrams per liter (mg/l) of fluoride may
develop cosmetic discoloration of their permanent teeth (dental fluorosis). The drinking
water provided by your public water system
Gowrie Municipal Utilities has a fluoride concentration of 2.33 mg/l.

Dental fluorosis in its moderate or severe forms may result in a brown staining and/
or pitting of the permanent teeth. This problem occurs only in developing teeth, before
they erupt from the gums. Children under nine
should be provided with alternative sources of
drinking water or water that has been treated
to remove the fluoride to avoid the possibility of staining and pitting of their permanent
teeth. You may also want to contact your dentist about proper use by young children of fluoride-containing products. Older children and
adults may safely drink the water.

Drinking water containing more than
4.0 mg/l of fluoride (the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agencys drinking water standard)
can increase your risk of developing bone disease. Your drinking water does not contain

more than 4.0 mg/l of fluoride, but were

required to notify you when we discover
that the fluoride levels in your drinking water exceed 2.0 mg/l because of this cosmetic
dental problem.

For more information, please call
Chuck Angstrom at Gowrie Municipal
Utilities at 352-3065. Some home water
treatment units are also available to remove
fluoride from drinking water. In Iowa, home
water treatment units are regulated under 641Chapter 14, with the water treatment unit registration program administered by the Iowa
Department of Public Healths environmental
health division. In addition, you may call the
National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) International, at 1-877-867-3435.

Please share this information with all
the other people who drink this water, especially those who may not have received this
notice directly (for example, people in apartments, nursing homes, schools, and businesses). You can do this by posting this notice in a
public place or distributing copies by hand or
mail.
