CAREER EXPERT
Dear Chris,
Ive been wondering whether I can continue to do my current job as I find it boring and unfulfilling. Im also frustrated at the lack
of career progression. My friend from university recently returned from a long trip overseas and said it was a great experience. Im
now considering taking a career break is it a good idea for my career?
Regards,
Yi Min
Dear Yi Min,
If you decide to take a career break there
may be no guarantee of a suitable job upon
return. Even if you negotiate time off with
your employer, economic conditions can
change and businesses may have to adjust
their workforce accordingly. Time off
work could also impact on opportunities
for promotion and development.
However, taking a career break can be
a way of enhancing your personal and
professional development. There are a

variety of reasons for wanting to take time

off, from becoming disillusioned with
a job to wanting to develop new skills,
gain a new qualification or simply to do
something different. Those who take time
out often do so for self-improvement, to
complete a personal project, spend time
with family or to recharge and live a
dream.
Employees who have had a career break
often return with a more positive outlook
and enhanced skill set. It can recharge

their batteries so they return to work reenergised and focused on the kind of work
they want to do. If you decide to quit your
job there will be an element of risk, but
as the old saying goes nothing ventured,
nothing gained.
Good luck!
Regards,
Chris Mead

Conversation with

IN

BY MARGARET LIM

Han Li June
Associate Director
Hay Group

What is the one trait that you

think has led to your career
success?
Having superiors who have provided growth
opportunities and believed in my potential more
than I did was critical. A trait I inherited from
them is resilience. With adversity, I learnt that
it is important to have faith that eventually you
will gather sufficient resolve and experience,
and succeed at what you persevere.

Describe your leadership style.

A large part of what we do has impact on real
people and society. As a project director and
supervisor, I spend time drawing out their
aspirations and what is meaningful for them
and aligning their strengths to the larger
outcomes of our firm. Its a type of leadership
style we call coaching/visionary.
Diverse and self-managing teams are very
effective for the complexity that accompanies
management consulting work. Through a
democratic style, I facilitate the collision of
ideas and eventual integration that results in
creative solutions. This wouldnt have been
possible if I hadnt been working with people
from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines.
I can be fairly intense and directive at crunch
times. These are times when self-control and
awareness needs to kick in. So when I hear
June, your mind is working overtime for
anyone else to follow! thats when I need to
put a stop to achievement overdrive.

What do you look for in young

leaders?
Young leaders who are self-driven but at the
same time are able to bring people along with
them, who are not adverse to risks and dont
take themselves too seriously. In our business,
it is critical to have the ability to manage client

for me. For education work, we have been

involved in projects that have direct impact
on curriculum delivery and quality of teaching.
This is fulfilling for the team and me given that
children spend a significant part of their time
in school/childcare. Education delivery is at an
inflexion point hence we are privileged to be
part of this.
For leadership and change work, we often
partner with organizations that are undergoing
transformation. Apart from articulating the
destination, the larger part of the work involves
bringing people on a journey that can be fairly
ambiguous. Working with senior client teams
to forge a new way forward and providing them
support is rewarding.

How do you balance the

demands of work with family/
personal life?
The firm believes in encouraging a healthy
balance between work and personal
responsibilities. I have been on flexible time
arrangement since my childrens birth. Work
certainly eats into off-time but being able to
spend some afternoons with the children in
the week is worth the mental shuttling. Being
in touch with my parents and knowing that
they are coping well also provides me much
assurance that the arrangement is sustainable.

The customer is always

right. Thoughts?
That is correct from the perspective that they
own the issues and hence we must understand
and empathize with their underlying concerns.
In consulting, we are often asked for an
objective and professional point of view. The
view we offer may not always align with the
clients initial diagnosis but always offers new
insights to looking at their issues. The client
reserves the right to shape the view.

relationships.

What drives your motivation at

work?
I head the Education Sector business and lead
senior leadership and organizational change
projects. These are immensely meaningful

I feel that it is perfectly acceptable to raise

concerns to the client especially when they
may not have the full picture, which happens
when organizations grow dramatically. A cocreation and partnership process is necessary
to nail the eventual innovative and workable
solutions.

Baby
Boomers

1946 - 1964

Millennials

1965 - 1977

1978 & later

Gen Xers

HOW TO MANAGE DIFFERENT GENERATIONS

Managers are increasingly grappling with generational differences in their work forces.
Problems can arise from differing mindsets and communication styles of workers born in
different eras. The frictions may be aggravated by new technology and work patterns that
mix workers of different ages in ever-changing teams.
Baby Boomers, born between 1946 and 1964, are competitive and think workers should pay
their dues, workplace consultants say. Gen Xers, born between 1965 and 1977, are more
likely to be skeptical and independent-minded. Gen Ysalso known as Millennialswere
born in 1978 or later and like teamwork, feedback and technology.
The key is to be able to effectively address and take advantage of the differences in values
and expectations of each generation. But experts say managers must be careful not to follow
blanket stereotypes. Managers must also take care not to disadvantage older workers, even
inadvertently, or risk retention problems and legal headaches.
Here are some strategies:
Send your managers to class so they can learn to recognize generational differences
and adapt. Its important that managers change rather than trying to change the staff.
Facilitate mentoring between different aged employees to encourage more crossgenerational interaction. Younger employees should learn to seek the experience and
wisdom offered by senior employees. Older employees should learn to be open to the fresh
perspectives offered by younger employees.
Offer different working options like telecommuting and working offsite. Focus on the
results employees produce rather than on how they get it done. This will give employees
some flexibility on how they want to work and put everybody, regardless of where they spent
most of their time working, on the same scale to measure success. Telecommuting can also
encourage Boomers nearing retirement to stay on staff longer since the option allows them
to gear down their workloads.
Accommodate different learning styles. Baby Boomers may favor more traditional and
static training methods like Power Point presentations and handbooks, while younger
workers may gravitate towards more interactive, technology-based forms of learning.
Keep employees engaged. Provide regular educational and training opportunities as well
as career advice to keep all workers interested in the company. Fuel the high expectations
of ambitious Millennials with special assignments that are outside of their job descriptions.
Consider putting them on a task force to solve a problem or establishing a regular presence
on social networking sites for the company.

Open up the office. Millennials generally dont work well under rigid management structure.
They prefer open collaborations that allow employees to share information and for everybody
to contribute to decision-making. Assign work to teams of employees and have them present
finished product to the entire department. The idea is to take advantage of the Millennials
preference for teamwork and to encourage more solidarity throughout the workplace.
Toss the routines. Experts say Millennials and Gen Xers dislike the formality of regular
meetings, especially when theres nothing to discuss. Limit meetings to when theres a real
need.
Create recognition programs. Even simple gestures like a pat on the back or positive email
congratulations can help boost productivity with Gen Xers. Boomers may seek status so may
respond best to an office-wide memo that announces that they are meeting or exceeding
their goals. Millennials may seek validation and approval so will appreciate increased
responsibility and additional training opportunities. To this end, Millennials may also prefer
more frequent employee reviews.
Accommodate personal employee needs. Different generations of employees will be in
different stages of life and may require that employers offer some scheduling flexibility to
manage their personal time. But maintain parity so other employees dont feel alienated.
Boomers who are thinking of retirement, for example, may want to cut the number of hours
they work in exchange for reduced pay. Gen Xers who need to leave work early to attend a
parent/teacher function can agree to make up lost time at another date. Support Millennials
who may want to pursue another degree part time and extend the same educational
opportunities to other employees.
Give all employees a voice. Regardless of age and tenure, give all employees a forum in
which to present ideas, concerns and complaints. Department heads should facilitate open
communication throughout the office and set aside time to provide honest feedback.
Dont apply a blanket communication-method policy. Boomers may prefer to communicate
by phone or in person. Millennials grew up being in constant communication with peers and
coworkers so are accustomed to emailing, texting or sending instant messages.
