Eritrea commemorates International Childrens Day

December 6, Asmara- Children from many of


Asmaras kindergarten, primary and secondary
schools marched through the streets of Asmara
to celebrate International Childrens Day, which
is commemorated on 8 December in Eritrea.

This years commemoration was especially
significant as it marked the 25th anniversary of
the adoption of the Convention of the Rights of
the Child (CRC) by the UN General Assembly.
The CRC is an international treaty that
recognizes the human rights of children, defined
as persons up to the age of 18 years. The
Government of Eritrea ratified the CRC in 1994.
The CRC is the first international instrument
signed and ratified by the Government of the
State of Eritrea, noted H.E. Kahsai Gebrehiwet,
the Minister of Labour and Human Welfare.
The Government reaffirms its commitment to
make all investmentsso that children will be
able to enjoy their childhoods properly, he
said.

Dr. Suleiman Braimoh, Representative, UNICEFEritrea also addressed the audience appreciating the
work of the people and Government of Eritrea in
reducing infant mortality, increasing access to water
and sanitation, improving access to schools and
scaling up protection mechanisms for all children.
Let us recommit ourselves today, see where we can
do better, develop or strengthen partnerships,
overcome barriers holding us back and channel our
energies to reduce the inequities that endanger
children today and threaten their hopes for the
future, Dr. Braimoh said. Let us embrace new
ideas and look for new ways to make child rights a
reality for all children in Eritrea.
During the ceremony, children performed songs,
dramatic skits and poems all related to the theme of
child rights.

UNICEF partners with the Government of the State


of Eritrea in the programme areas of Health and
Nutrition, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH),
Basic Education and Child Protection.
