Regulation 2012
PART-A (10 x 2 = 20 Marks

1. What are the advantages of using Venturitube as a restriction element?

Venturi is preferred when the
Measuring fluid contains large amount of slurries or suspended particles.
Accuracy of the flow measured should be high.
Pressure loss should be minimum
Coefficient of discharge should be high
2. Define Reynolds Number
Combination of density, viscosity of the fluid to a dimension describing length and the
average fluid velocity.

V is the mean fluid velocity (SI units: m/s)

L Diameter of the pipe (m)
is the viscosity of the fluid (Pas or Ns/m or kg/(ms))
is the density of the fluid (kg/m)
3. Write the expression for vortex frequency in vortex shedding flow meter.

f = Nst V / D
Where f = Shedding frequency
V = Fluid velocity
D = characteristic dimension of the bluff body
Nst = Strouhal number
4. What are the factors to be considered for the selection of flow meter?
Measurement requirements
External conditions of the flow pipe
Internal conditions of the flow pipe
Properties of the flowing fluid
Installation and accessories
Cost considerations
5. What is meant by Photo Electric Effect?
The Photoelectric effect is the observation that many metals emit electrons when light
shines upon them. Electrons emitted in this manner can be called photoelectrons.
6. What is shrinkage and swell effect in boiler drum?
It is a effect caused during a rapid increase in a load, a severe increase in level may occur.
Shrink and swell is the result of pressure changes in the drum changing the water density.
7. Define the term viscosity and density.
Viscosity is defined as the resistance that arises from the lack of slipperiness of
the parts of the liquid, other things being equal is proportional to the velocity with which

parts of the liquid are separated from one another. This lack of slipperiness is called
viscosity. Its unit is Nsm-2.
Density is defined as the mass per unit volume of a substance under fixed
conditions. Its unit is kg/m3.
8. Differentiate Baume Scale and API Scale

9. Define Electromagnetic Interferences

10. List some methods of measurement of moisture?

The different types of moisture measurements are:
Thermal drying method
Distillation methods
Chemical reaction methods
Electrical methods:
Conductivity types
Capacitance types
