Introduction
This spreadsheet gives initial estimates of flange areas and web thickness for typical composite bridge cross sections as
described in the SCI guide to composite highway bridge design. Multi-girder bridges and ladder deck bridges (Figures 1 and
2) are covered.
The plate sizes were derived using resistances from BS EN 1994-2 and loading from BS EN 1991-2 with the relevant UK
National Annexes. Grillage models were used to take transverse distribution into account. Continuous and simply supported
plate girders are covered. For multi girders a different design is given for inner and outer girders. Two load models, LM1
and LM3, were considered and elastic (Class 3 & 4) and plastic (Class 1 & 2) designs are provided. ULS and SLS moment,
shear and moment shear interaction have been considered in the designs.
The data used is the same as that given in the associated charts. The plate sizes are interpolated for intermediate girder
spacings and span to depth ratios.
It is emphasised that the sizes obtained do not represent final designs, which must always take into account all factors,
such as bridge configuration and loading.
Deck reinforcement is 20 mm high yield bars at 150 mm centres top and bottom.

General

Single span designs are based on a single girder size throughout its length.
For continuous decks separate pier girders and span girder designs are given with the pier girder lengths
being 0.4 x span, centred over the pier.
Continuous span designs are based on 3 span models with side spans 70% the length of the central span.
The sizes are applicable if adjacent continuous spans are roughly equal in length.
The steelwork is unpropped and therefore not acting compositely under its own weight and that of the
concrete slab. The steel is however composite for all superimposed loads after the concrete has cured.
The designs take into account lateral torsional buckling during the casting of the deck slab. It is assumed that
the bracing at 8 m centres provides full torsional restraint and the check is based on the BS5400 approach.
If a more accurate elastic critical buckling moment was derived, as permitted in the Eurocodes the bracing
requirements could be reduced.
Select Simply Supported, Continuous or Continuous End Span. Selecting Continuous will give you the pier
and internal span girder designs . For the end span girder (see Figure 3) select Continuous End Span.
Enter your span length. The span must be between 15 and 60 m. For Continuous End Spans it must be
between 12 and 48 m.
Select whether you want to enter span to depth ratio or girder depth. For Continuous End Spans the girder
depth must be specified.
Enter the span to depth ratio or total girder depth including the slab. The corresponding value will be
displayed in the box below. For Continuous End Spans the span to depth ratio is based on the span
increased by 25%.
Enter the relevant girder spacings for the type of bridge selected. Multi girder spacing must be between 2.5
and 4 m. Ladder deck girder spacing must be between 5 and 20 m and ladder deck cross girder spacing
must be between 3 and 4 m.
Select the load model required. Load Model 1 includes Uniformly Distributed Loads and Tandem Systems.
Load Model 3 includes Uniformly Distributed Loads, Tandem Systems and an SV196 Special Vehicle.
Outputs
Only outputs relevant to the bridge type selected are displayed. The top and bottom flange areas, web thickness and total
girder area are given directly. Flange dimensions can be established by entering flange widths. If the flanges don't meet the
section classification requirements in Table 5.2 of EN 1993-1-1 then the input box will turn red.
Both elastic (class 3 & 4) and plastic (class 1 & 2) designs are provided for all cases. The designer can then choose which
approach they wish to adopt. EN19942 clause 6.2.1.3 (2) limits the plastic bending resistance in a span girder to 0.9 M pl,Rd
when elastic and plastic sections are mixed if the ratio of lengths of the spans adjacent to that support is less than 0.6. if
this applies the span girder flange sizes would need to be increased.
When the plate sizes are shown as N/A and the inputs are all within the specified ranges this means that the bridge layout
was found not to give a practical design. However it is important to note that where interpolation is required N/A will be
displayed if there is no data available for the upper or lower limit. In these cases a design can often be obtained by entering
values for which data is available without interpolation:
