Once Again The Mundesley Branch Of

The Womens Royal British Legion

A S WILLS

Danum House, Overstrand, Norfolk

Once again the Womens RBL were doing

their bit to raise money at their Christmas
Fayre in Mundesley Coronation Hall on
Saturday November 29th.
Due to popular demand the Fayre also
took place in the Parish Hall across the
road, where the delicious lunches were
served alongside many more stalls.

The doors opened at ten in the morning

and my lovely wife Lis was selling the
tombola tickets within a matter of
minutes, wearing a silly Santa Hat,
like most of the others who were
helping out on the day.

while Liz will be working on
all the new advertising.
Liz can be contacted on:

So next time someone fills this

space it will be Liz King.
I would like to take this chance to
thank very much our advertisers
and assure them that they will be
in safe hands with Liz King and
of course, my wife Lis.
It is now only a matter of less than
a fortnight before we will be busy
celebrating the festive season.

Some good people may well ask

what you you going to be doing?

Some may call it a step into
semi-retirement.

Dear Philip,

I am writing in the hope that you can help me,

you are my last hope.
I work in Cromer and sometime on either the
16th or 17th of November I lost a very
precious item in Cromer.
It was a Liverpool hat with 9 badges which
were Fathers Day presents from my children,
so they mean a lot to me.
I am hoping that you can put something in the
Crab Tales to see if anyone found it.
I can be contacted on North Walsham
01692 405 781.
Yours sincerely,
Clive Jackson,

41 Station Road,

Dear Philip,

To all those who thought I was rude to Janet

Munro in a recent letter in the Crab Tales.
How could I ever be rude to the winner of
Mundesleys Miss Lovely Legs 1923?
Nigel Holmes
Mundesley

Dear Editor,

I was lucky enough to be invited by some old

friends to go with them to the Christmas Pier
Show last week.
We all enjoyed the show and especially the
dancers with their many varied routines.
Goodness knows how they manage to change
into so many different costumes without
getting too flustered.
However, although the costumes were very
colourful and well designed, we were rather
shocked at how extremely skimpy they were
not really appropriate for a family show.
I have never seen so many bottoms in my life
and thank goodness we were not sitting in the
front row!
None of us are Spring Chickens but we are
definitely not prudes.
Even the tutus worn in the Swan Lake ballet
number were very revealing and seemed to
be designed to be so.
I know that the current trend is for ever more
revealing costumes in TV programmes such
as Strictly but is it really necessary?
Yours Sincerely
Ann Wilson,
North Walsham

Dear Philip,

I recently took a photograph of our beautiful

Mundesley beach from the cliff top behind
Trafalgar Court.

I then turned to my right and took a photograph

of the blocked off footpath which leads down
to the beach - blocked off because the bottom
part of the path was very, very badly damaged
following the storm surge of December 2013.

Our village relies on tourism for survival - and

our beach is one of the main reasons why
people visit and take holidays here.
Tis true there are other paths to the beach
but they are well away from the western
end of the village.
It would be rather nice to know exactly
what is happening to this footpath.
I was told that roughly 5,000 had been spent
on a survey - is this true? - I also heard that to
repair the footpath would cost in the region of
300,000 plus - it this true?
And is there anyone at North Norfolk District
Council who really cares whether the path is
repaired or not?
I have also read that on occasion the NNDC
Meetings have been cancelled because there
wasnt anything to discuss - so they obviously
dont consider our footpath to be of any
importance.
I think one year is quite long enough to wait for
an answer, whatever that answer might be.
Regards,
Janet Munro
Mundesley

Dear Editor,
North Norfolk Beachrunner John Battrick, 24,
has been invited to take on the challenge of
running in the London Marathon in April 2015,
to raise money for the charity Breaks for Kids.

This particular footpath is important to our

village, it was used by locals and visitors
alike all year round.

of our normal lunch clubs.
We are grateful to our trustees, volunteers, and

Friends the success it is but also very grateful
to our community partners, clients, customers,
and everyone who works with us. Most of all,
we would like to thank our members for their
enthusiasm and encouragement.

Happy New Year to you all!

The charity, managed by The Youth Hostels

Association, gives financial support to
disadvantaged children, to enable them
to take part in school trips and outdoor
adventure breaks.
John, from Gresham and currently working for
the YHA, said:This charity means a lot to me.
I provide the catering for large groups of disadvantaged kids at Patterdale YHA and experience
first hand the impact and difference these
breaks make to young lives. Any support
to help me reach my 1000 target will
be greatly appreciated.

Denise Tarry the Mundesley Branch Secretary

of the WRBL said:
Our Fayre is a sure sign that Christmas is
imminent and people came from towns and
villages from miles around to buy from the
fantastic array of goods on display in the
Church Rooms & the Coronation Hall
(it was such a success in 2013 that we
had to have both venues this year).
On sale were festive decorations lovingly made
by Branch Chairman & Treasurer, Jenny Lambert
(pictured far left) and Loraine Holtam.
The magnificent cakes made by members, and
a huge range of gifts, household items and all
kinds of kitchenalia.
You could also try your luck on the tombola, the
bottle tombola or the raffle and once you had
spent your money, you could choose from a
ploughmans lunch, soup or a bacon roll
followed by a mince pie or delicious cake.
Branch members put in a huge amount of work
to make this years Fayre a success and it was!
Thanks to all of them.
A fabulous total of 2668.42 was raised and
this will be forwarded to the Royal British
Legion Womens Section Benevolent Fund.
The Fund helps the many men and women
associated with the armed forces both
now and in the past.
The Mundesley & District Branch would also
like to thank everyone that supported the
Fayre. We couldnt do it without you

The Paston
Treasure

Norfolk Museums Service launched its first crowdfunding campaign on Monday 8th December, to
re-gild the frame of the popular 17th century
painting The Paston Treasure.
Hosted by the Art Funds Art Happens website
a new crowdfunding platform dedicated to
supporting UK museums to raise money for
new, small scale achievable and creative
projects the campaign aims to raise
14,500 in little over three months.

The Coronation Hall before

the Doors were opened.

As always this Christmas Fayre was very

well attended from the minute they opened
until the doors were closed at 1.30pm.
There were so many bargains to be found
and lots of happy tombola winners.
PK
All donations will go towards transforming
one of the Norwich Castle Museum and Art
Gallerys rarest and most famous paintings.
Painted by an unknown Dutch artist at Oxnead
Hall, the painting portrays some of the treasures
collected by the famous Paston family, the
objects are dispersed around the world but
the painting has remained in Norfolk.
In the 17th century, the ornately carved frame
would not have looked as it does today plain
wood - but would have been gilded.
The campaign to re-gild the frame and restore
this masterpiece to its former glory follows an
earlier fundraising drive that covered
the cost of conserving and
cleaning the painting.
The Norwich Castle Museum & Art
Gallery in partnership with the Yale
Center for British Art in the United
States are planning to stage a major
exhibition in 2018.
The exhibition will bring together
as many of the Paston treasures as
possible, and reunite them with
The Paston Treasure painting
for the first time in more than
350 years.
Paul Smyth, Chairman of the
Communities Committee at
Norfolk County Council,

said: Crowdfunding provides a novel and

voluntary way for people to directly support
causes or projects they want to help.
As the Paston Treasure painting is a much-loved
masterpiece and an intrinsic part of Norfolks
heritage, we hope this project will attract lots
of support ahead of the major exhibition.
John Ward, Chairman of Norfolk Joint Museums
Committee, said: The public, in supporting our
crowdfunding campaign, will be able to feel a
sense of ownership of this magnificent mid 1670s
masterpiece depicting world wide objects and
showing the wealth & learning of Sir Robert
Paston; and visit the Castle Museum to see
the result of their donations in the restored,
gilded frame.
Donors to this project will receive a thank
you for their support - ranging from a
special project - related postcard to a limited
edition tote bag and, for donations of 950
and upwards, the opportunity to spend a day
behind-the-scenes of the Norwich Castle
Museum & Art Gallery.
The campaign runs until 31st March 2015, by
which date the full amount has to be raised or
the money pledged will be returned to donors.

Cromer Lights
At 5.30pm on Saturday December 6th, the
Cromer Christmas Lights were turned on by
10 year old Grace Gascoyne, who was the
winner of the childrens poster competition.
As expected, the town centre was packed
with hundreds of jolly souls enjoying the
entertainment and the Christmas market.

Icurus Hines (On Right) was hard at work

supplying his burgers to numerous hungry
souls. (See Above)
Everyone was in the mood for a very jolly
evening, despite it being about 1 degree.
Was it cold? Yes, but fun!

Circus Ramona

At 3.30pm on Saturday November 29th I went

along to this Circus at the Sheringham High
School were it was being staged.
This particular show was put on to support the
great work being undertaken by SSAFA.
So who are these good folk?

Answer: It is the vision and drive of one man,

who stands at the heart of this charity.
In 1885, after Mayor James Gilda wrote to
The Times appealing for funds the Soldiers
& Sailors Families Association was born.
Since then they have supported millions of
people, by their work, including running
these sorts of activities.
This was organised by Donna Young whos
husband Brian suffered from Post Traumatic
Stress Disorder, after a tour of duty in Iraq.
After a 10 min video outlining the work of
ssafa David Harper entertained the
audience on his bag pipes.

The show was thoroughly enjoyable with

Donna compering and introducing each
performer on to the stage.
Despite having to leave before the end of the
show, I found it a delightful afternoon.
I especially liked Luna the dancing horse,
(Below Left) despite him losing his head
during his routine.

The Belfry Grand

Christmas Fayre
On Friday December the 5th, I popped into the
Overstrand Belfry Primary School to attend
their Fayre in this great local school.
This particular local primary school has always
been seen as one of best local schools in the
area, if not The Best.

Talking to the Head Teacher Titus Cotton you

can understand why, as he is well organised
and very much on the ball.
Titus pointed out a new cup which is being
awarded to Pupils who establish themselves
through the work they achieve.
The freshly made food from the kitchen (Below)
was doing a roaring trade.

With the school pupils singing and all the

Festive stalls along with Santa & his elves
and Tombola and games it really was a fun
filled afternoon.
These two girls (Above) were lining up to
have their faces painted ready to enjoy a
great afternoon.

Always A Great
Success

Like every year since it kicked off the Cromer

gathering, organised and run by the VEO, is a
very popular event.
This year it was held on December 8th at the
Parish Hall with a great turn out of OAPs.
Tony Shipp (Chairman of the VEO) ran it all
with numerous singers & dancers taking part.
The star of the evening had to be Maria Willis
(Right) who sang so beautifully, with a clear
and strong voice. Maria is a pupil of Cromer
Academy and plans to use her very natural
talents after leaving school. A name to
follow and watch out for.
All in all it was a great evening and greatly
enjoyed by everyone who turned out.

An Elderly Man..

........lay dying in his bed.

While suffering the agonies of impending death,
he suddenly smelled the aroma of his favourite
scones wafting up the stairs. He gathered his
remaining strength, and lifted himself from the
bed, leaning on the wall, he slowly made his way
out of the bedroom, and with even greater effort,
gripping the railing with both hands, he crawled
downstairs and with laboured breath, he leaned
against the door-frame, gazing into the kitchen.
Were it not for deaths agony, he would have
thought himself already in heaven, for there,
spread out upon the kitchen table were
hundreds of his favourite scones.

Was it heaven?
Or was it one final act of love from his devoted
Yorkshire wife of sixty years, seeing to it that
he left this world a happy man?
Mustering one great final effort, he threw himself
towards the table and landed on his knees in a
rumpled posture.
His aged and withered hand trembled towards
one of the scones at the edge of the table,
when it was suddenly smacked by his
wife with a wooden spoon .......
B***er off she said.
Theyre for the funeral
Thanks to Steve Francis for this.

New Pathway

WANTED

On Friday December 12th The Honourable

Norman Lamb MP offically opened the new
pathway along the coast at Trimingham by
cutting the ribbon that crossed over the new
pathway along the coast top.

Lifeboat Crew

We are recruiting Crew for the

Mundesley Inshore Lifeboat.
Would you enjoy helping others
in your community?
We provide full training in all aspects
of Lifeboat crewing and water rescue.
Do you work or live in Mundesley
or the surrounding villages?
Are you aged between 18 and 45?
If so, male or female, we would like
to hear from you.
Contact: Brian on 07500 428 659
Or Email:
enquiries@mundesleylifeboat.co.uk
To discuss how you could help

He Didn't Like....
(Above Right) is Norman Lamb surrounded
by members of the Coastguard team some of
whom had started their day by walking along
the coast from Sheringham and the rest from
Sea Palling.
After the ribbon had been cut by Norman,
everyone headed off to the Pilgrim shelter
in Trimingham, for refreshments and the
cake which really looked impressive.
Despite the day being pretty cool, if not chilly
it was an enjoyable afternoon.

I would recommend going on line to visit:

www. countrysideaccess .norfolk.gov.uk
where the NCC lists the 12 walks.
Walks range from 3.5 to approx.10 miles
with most of them being suitable for
everyone to take part in.
Whether you are a keen walker or not,
this is indeed a great new walk for us
all to enjoy, now or in the near future.

.....................the Casserole
And he didn't like my cake,
He said my biscuits were too hard
Not like his mother used to make.
I didn't perk the coffee right
He didn't like the stew,
I didn't mend his socks
The way his mother used to do.
I pondered for an answer
I was looking for a clue.
Then I turned around and smacked him one
Like his mother used to do.
Thanks to Russell Sparkes for this

A Great Show

I always enjoy the work of the Mundesley

Players, as did all who attended this years
production of A Christmas Carol
on Friday the 5th December.
I have to say that Gerry Robins, who is more
often than not among the cast of The Players
pulled off the role of Ebenezer Scrooge
brilliantly (tall fellow on the back row).
Likewise Paul Reynolds as his Clerk did, as
to be expected every time, a brilliant job.
The work of Charles Dickens, adapted by
David Holman, was very well interpreted
by the cast in front of a full house.
The show ran for 4 nights from December 1st
and despite so many other events going on at
this time of year had a very good attendance.
The children who took part in the show were so
professional and did a brilliant and grand job.
Considering the size of the Mundesley village
they always have a wonderful team on hand
for their many large productions.

Paternalism vEmpowerment
Written by Miranda Marshall
Director at Hayes + Storr

Many decades ago the section of the court system

that then dealt with those who were mentally
incapable was the Chancery Division of the
High Court which was said to deal with
wills, wives and wrecks.
In other words, probate matters (as now),
matrimonial issues (now dealt with by
their own court called The Family Court),
and shipping matters.
The wrecks were maritime rather than human.
Cases relating to those without mental capacity
were headed In Lunacy. That was an age of
paternalism; and not always very benign.
Gradually the law in relation to those lacking
mental capacity entered a world of kinder
paternalism where others knew best and
the mentally incapable were treated
almost as children.
The landscape has yet again changed and we are
now in a culture where those lacking mental
capacity are to be empowered wherever
possible to make decisions with whatever
means and support is available.
The practical effect on those managing the affairs
of those without mental capacity, whether by a
Power of Attorney (Enduring or Lasting) or as
a Court-appointed Deputy is significant.
The terminology of the Court and its administrative
system is only slowly catching up with the new
ethos. The administrative head of the system
is called The Public Guardian (which even
though I have been dealing with his office
for more than 20 years still carries capedcrusader connotations for me).
The Mental Capacity Act 2005 is approaching
its tenth birthday.
By this a person is to be assumed to have mental
capacity and be able to make their own decisions
unless it is established that they do not.
They are to be helped to make as many of their
own decisions as possible by those managing
their affairs. And just because someone does
not make a wise decision it does not mean
that they are to be treated as incapable of
making a decision.
It is reassuring to know that even in 2014 the
law enshrines the right of an English man or
woman to be eccentric.
This article aims to supply general information,
but it is not intended to constitute advice.
Every effort is made to ensure that the law referred
to is correct at the date of publication and to
avoid any statement which may mislead.

Limited Service
At Sheringham Recycling Centre

Essential work begins on Monday 5th January

at Sheringham Recycling Centre to upgrade the
drainage system and is anticipated to last for up
to eight weeks, depending on the weather.
The recycling centre will remain open during
this time, but it will only be able to provide a
limited service as around half of the site will
be closed.
The number of bins will be reduced which means
a smaller range of materials will be accepted.
Timber, metals, textiles and brick rubble will
not be accepted for recycling and containers
will be removed.
The area of the site available to the public will
be limited & parking spaces reduced by half.
There will therefore be restrictions on the
number of vehicles able to enter and leave
the site and as a result queues are likely.
During the time the work is taking place, site
users are urged to consider using the nearest
alternative sites which are:
Worstead (open seven days a week) or
Wells (open Fri-Mon).
Hempton and Mayton Wood Plus Recycling
Centres (both open seven days a week) are
also available and both provide additional
Pay As You Throw services.
For more information about recycling please
visit: www.recyclefornorfolk.org.uk
Effective surface water drainage is one of the
most important environmental elements of a
recycling centres design and this upgrade
will ensure Sheringham remains compliant
with the tough regulations which protect
the environment from the impact of
dealing with waste at the site.
Site users are likely to experience disruption
during the course of the work.
Norfolk County Council would like to
apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Norfolk Winter......

........is coming - County Council

ready to help people through the
colder months.
The recent frosty mornings are
a reminder that winter is just
around the corner.
Norfolk County Council is ready
& prepared to help people in the
county get through the colder
months and is encouraging
everyone who can to do
the same.
So far this autumn the gritters have
only been out 3 times.Temperatures
have recovered since then but expert
weather forecasts supplied to the
council are currently predicting
that it will get colder again.
The councils 51 gritter lorries are
ready to hit the road on any given
day or night and Norfolk County
Councils seven salt domes are
stocked with more than 17,000
tonnes of salt.
This will be replenished as & when
necessary before stocks reach the
minimum level due to a long-term
contract the council has with its
supplier Salt Union.
More than 2,000 miles of Norfolks
roads, over a 3rd of the countys
network, are on Norfolk County
Councils regular gritting routes,
including all A and B-class roads
and some C-class roads (the A11,
A47 and A12 are gritted by the
Highways Agency).
In addition there are over 1,800 grit
bins around the county that have
been filled by the County Council
which people can use on public
pavements and roads.
Toby Coke, Chairman of the
Environment, Transport and
Development Committee at
NCC, said:
Were all hoping for a mild winter
but, should we get snow & ice, its
important that we are prepared to

help people cope and carry on with

their lives as far as possible.
Weve managed to maintain the length
of the roads on our gritting routes
over the last few years despite huge
reductions in the amount of money
we receive from central government,
but I dont underestimate the
difficulties many people still
contend with when the
temperature drops.
The best way we can cope is to look
out for each other and for everyone
who can to do their bit, whether that
is the shop owners clearing snow
from the pavement outside their
frontage, checking on vulnerable
& older people who may struggle
to get out and about, or being
mindful of the pressure all the
emergency services are under
during winter and taking what
preventative steps you can to
avoid needing their help.
People are also being asked to help
each other by getting behind the
councils online informationsharing campaign designed to
help people in the county get
through the winter.
Throughout the winter, daily
updates will be available on
the Norfolk Facebook page:
www.facebook.com/norfolkcc
The updates will include weather
alerts, any disruptions to services
and whether the councils gritters
are going out.
General advice and information about
support & services are also available
and photos will be posted regularly,
on the dedicated Norfolk Winter
blog: www.norfolkwinter.com.
The council is asking people to help
get the word out by sharing these
updates and posting their own, to
create an online Norfolk Winter
community for people to get upto-the-minute local information.

Once again, I will be one of the three wise men
this year on Christmas Eve.
So it is a case of learning my lines and getting
it right on the night.
The last time I took part, while my fellow wise
men and I were waiting to make our entrance,
I was saying how much I fancied a take away
meal but didnt realise that someone had
already switched on my mike...
not very wise of me!
It is a fun event and well worth going
to for you and your family.
PK

The Christmas
Pier Show.

Its beginning to look a lot like Christmas and

that is a good reason to visit The Pier Show.
Actually there are lots of good reasons.
Curtains up, and our smiling artists are ready
for a few hours of delicious festive fun.
Such a pleasure to be here, such a spectacular
show put together by the accomplished team
combining costumes, lighting, scenery, music,
choreography and super script writers.
Our top Norfolk entertainer Olly Day with his
cheeky chappie looks, humour and comments
moved effortlessly from one scene to the next
and had us all in tears of laughter.
His dancing was tu tu good.
Olly is equally at home performing solo or part
of any team. ( He dubbed the theatre: A shed
on stilts - Brilliant.
The sketch with Benson entitled The Monologue
was hilarious, they were revelling in each others
humour and the chemistry between them was
apparent. Benson does a unique variety act
combining manic and humour, he has a
superb personality and is fun to watch.
A welcome return to Cromers own vocalist
Mr Eddie Bushell and a very well received
special guest vocalist Lyn Paul of the
New Seekers fame.
Marlenes school of dance pupils and Cromer
Christmas Choir are now an established part of
the show, as is Jo. Marlenes youngsters have
been charming and delightful since the first
show in 2003.
A super slice of action and energy from our
delicious dancers, who bring glamour and
glitter to the stage.
There will be plenty of quiet evenings at home
and there are few better ways for the family to
get into the festive spirit than an outing to
The Pier Show. You will be happy you did.
The Show runs until December 27th.

A Very Popular Lunch

On Tuesday December 9th, the ladies from Annamarie Sternes

Fitness League classes turned out to enjoy a jolly good lunch at
Northrepps Cottage.
Annamarie (Below on Right) does a brilliant job of running
these weekly classes all over North Norfolk.
In total there are now some 97 ladies who
enjoy these classes, including my wife Lis.
Annamarie said:
We are more than just an exercise class and
when over 50 ladies came together for this
double celebration firstly like for many other
groups Christmas was the initial reason but
secondly it was for everyone to raise a glass
to all the new friendships they had made
through attending my new local Fitness
League classes.
Earlier this year Annamarie left her job
within education to start classes around
the North Norfolk area.
She has taught dancing for many years but this mum of four felt there
was a lack of local daytime classes for ladies of 50+ a non competitive,
fun! low impact style of exercising (with great music) .
Annamaries classes which run in Cromer, Sheringham, Mundesley,
Aylsham and Fakenham focus on correct posture, mobility of joints
and the strengthening of muscles.

Fitness League (previously known as the league of health & beauty)

will be 85 years old next year, with such an amazing history and still
going strong, this is confirmed by the almost 100 ladies who attend
Annamaries classes and believe in the benefits of these exercises.
One of the ladies said:
the classes are great, including lots of stretch & balance. They are not
aerobic but gentle with nice dance music. We work hard but Annamarie
makes it fun as well. I fully recommend it as a exercise class for all ages.
New Members are always very welcome.
For further details about classes see the advert
above or to book a place call Annamarie on:
01263-511 169 or 07989 285 599
