Brochure
Description:

Brochure layout and design

Programs:

Adobe Illustrator/Adobe Indesign

Date:
December 6, 2014

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 12
Ben Pingel

Objectives:

Set up and align a two-sided, folded document.

Create an original, new logo and use it in a brochure.
Incorporate quality images.
Write at least 250 words of original copy in at least three paragraphs, headers, and
subheaders.

Process:

This was a fun project for me. I started by looking at different brochure layouts and
finding inspiration and elements that I liked. I like the tri-fold look and did some initial
layout work. I used Illustrator to create a new logo for Nerd Data. I used a text based
logo and like the simple look of it. I used Indesign to layout and build the brochure. I
repeated blue elements throughout the design to build repetition. I also used a large
image on the front which wraps around to the back of the brochure. I used the Indesign
text wrap tools to wrap the text around that image.

Business Card
Description:

Programs:

Adobe Illustrator/Adobe Indesign

Date:
November 8, 2014

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 12
Ben Pingel

Objectives:

Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image.

Use the new logo to design consistent layouts for a business card. Photos are okay on
business card as additional design elements.

Process:

The first part of my process was to plan the project and find other examples I liked. I
planned out the layout and general idea of what I wanted. I started with the logo on the
back of the card. I knew I wanted to use that to tie the letterhead and card together. I
drew the logo in Adobe Illustrator and went through several variations. I built the front of
the cards and created a simple, clean look.

Montage
Description:

Photo montage with a spiritual theme

Programs:
Adobe Photoshop

Date:
October 25, 2014

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 12
Ben Pingel

Objectives:

Unify a layout with a consistent theme and dominant spiritual message

Blend two or more images together gradually, using masks
Demonstrate more advanced Photoshop skills for layout with multiple elements
Use a mask to apply a filter to one part of the image

Process:

This project was created in Adobe Photoshop using images from the recent birth of my
son Benson. I first started by opening my background image and setting my size to 8.5 x
11 I then placed the bottom left image of my family and added a mask. I used the mask
to blend the two images together. I changed the vibrancy of both images to bring out the
colors. I added the body of the quote in a Slab Serif font and the attribution in a Sans
Serif font. I applied an Overlay filter to both pieces of text and a drop shadow to the body
of the quote.

Logos
Description:

Three logo variations for the same company

Programs:
Adobe Illustrator

Date:
November 1, 2014

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 12
Ben Pingel

Objectives:

Create a variety of logos to fit a company or personal image.

Use the basic tools of Illustrator.

Process:

The logos were created using Adobe Illustrator. For the first logo I looked for two fonts
with a good contrast. I chose a slab serif and sans serif font. For the second logo I chose
to incorporate an illustration in the center of the logo. I found a font that worked will for
the sides of the headset. I used tracking to bring the text of the logo in tighter. For the
last logo I went for an abstract symbol. I created an N with very clean lines and shape.

Letterhead
Description:

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 12

Objectives:

Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image.

Use the new logo to design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead.
Letterhead should be 8.5 x 11, full-bleed optional, but trim only .125.
Keep designs simple with light watermarks and drop shadows and plenty of white
space.

Process:

Flier
Description:

Created a flier to promote a Graduate Leadership Conference(Black & White)

Programs:
Adobe Indesign

Date:
October 4, 2014

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 12
Ben Pingel

Objectives:

Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography.

Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout.

Process:

The first step in my process is to determine my message and audience for the design.
This allows me to focus on them through the remainder of the design process. After
determining that I created sketches of possible layouts that had all the necessary pieces
of information. After sketching I chose a few of the best designs and began laying them
out in Adobe InDesign. I used a clean business layout with repetition of colors and size
variation to highlight important elements. The logo, photos, and content for this flier
was provided by the client.

Event Ad
Description:

Ad created in Microsoft Word. This was a full bleed flier created to promote a benefit
event.

Programs:
Microsoft Word

Date:
October 11, 2014

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 12
Ben Pingel

Objectives:

Find, scan and import a high-quality image.

Create a full-bleed design.
Choose a color scheme and typeface(s) that work for your message and audience.
Learn to use only Word design features without using any Adobe programs, including
Photoshop.

Process:

The first step with this ad was to scan an image to use. I scanned the image at 300 dpi
to allow for resizing as needed. For this ad I used Microsoft Word. I used the basic shape
tools and picture settings available within Word.

Imaging
Description:

Project showcasing photography and editing skills. Also incorporates color scheme
choices.

Programs:
Adobe Photoshop

Date:
October 18, 2014

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 12
Ben Pingel

Objectives:

Learn basic photography skills.

Choose a color scheme, take a photo to match those colors, then incorporate the
colors into the layout.
Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on separate layers for NDE
(non-destructive editing.)

Process:

For this project I started with deciding on a subject matter and design. I wanted
something that I could relate to, so I chose my brothers Army uniform. To me it is a
symbol of liberty which fit with the sign we had. I setup the coat and sign and tried to
find a bright spot with lots of light. I also added a lamp to try to brighten it up as well.
I used Adobe Photoshop to remove the background and adjusted the levels, vibrance,
color, and sharpness. I then added the stars, text, and colors.

Web Page
Description:

This project is an example web page design. This showcases my use of HTML and CSS

Programs:
PhpStorm

Date:
November 22, 2014

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 12
Ben Pingel

Objectives:

Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page.

Acquire a working knowledge of HTML.
Acquire a working knowledge of CSS.

Process:

For this project I used a logo I created a few weeks ago. The colors in the web page
match those in the logo to create good unity. In working with the HTML and CSS I used
JetBrains PhpStorm. I centered my logo as the main focal point. I also created separation
between my logo and my design process using an hr element. I kept the overall look and
feel clean.
