1-1

OPTIMIZING YOUR SYSTEM

FCPX runs on a 64-bit platform - THE MORE RAM THE BETTER!

8GB minimum - 12-16GB is optimal

Dual-Core (Minimum) - Quad-Core Processors very helpful

A fast graphics processor - Post 2011 iMac, MacBookPro and Mac Pro should suffice

Always keep (and work with) your media on a separate drive than the
FCPX application

Close all other applications and running processes (when possible) while using FCPX

1-1

THE FCPX FILE SYSTEM

FCPX uses a dual (2) database file system

EVENTS : Store your media

PROJECTS = Your edited projects

PROJECTS always reference EVENTS - Media used in a PROJECT must belong to an EVENT or EVENTS

There is no limit to the number of events you can have

There is no limit to the number of projects you can have

Events are stored in the Final Cut Events folder

Projects are stored in the Final Cut Projects folder

Each folder is stored (by default) in your Movies folder on your MacHD

Events and Projects can be re-located using FCPX, but should never be copied manually

Files in these folders should never be changed, moved or re-named

1-1

THE FCPX FILE SYSTEM

The idea is that all of your media is stored in one place, so you never have to worry about
missing files, assets* or project saves. (*If you allow FCPX to manage your media for you)

You do not have to periodically save your FCPX project. FCPX will do it for you
automatically and ensure that your edits and changes are saved in the event of a crash

EVENTS do not need to be saved. They are just storage collections of your media.

1-1

LETS GET FAMILIAR WITH FCPX

1-1

IMPORTING AND ORGANIZING MEDIA

Final Cut has some very powerful features for organizing footage

You can organize your imported footage by keywords and tags (words that describe the
content of the video clips)

We can also batch rename our video clips within Final Cut for easy filtering and sorting

Only the best parts of our footage can be rated as favorites and keyword tagged to bypass
unwanted parts of our video clips.

Bad video clips (shots you wont use) can be rejected without being deleted.

1-2

LETS GET ORGANIZED

Organize our footage in Finder for easier import

Import our media into FCPX

Organize our media using Keyword Collections

Skim and Rate our video clips

Re-name some clips for faster sorting later

Apply keyword tags and learn about filtering for further organization

Cut EVENTS

We can use media from multiple EVENTS in our any number of PROJECTS

PROJECTS are always linked to an EVENT or EVENTS.

PROJECTS/TIMELINES

PROJECTS/Timelines have 2 distinct features:

They have a Primary Storyline
