Setting ModuleDYNS-30000
General Information
The DYNS-30000 is a microprocessor module designed to
interface with Barber-Colmans standard line of DYN1 electronic governors in remote speed setting applications. The
module interfaces directly with the remote speed setting pin
(PIN H) on the governor and ramps the engine speed according
to voltages present at the up and down inputs for the
selected ramp rates External input to the up and down pins
may be applied through the use of toggle switches or various
control devices depending on the application.

Setting The Up Rate Switches (Ramp Time)

Setting The Speed Range Potentiometer

(Located on Top Cover)

A dual-in-line switch package containing five setable switches

determines the time it will take the electronic governor to ramp
from the idle speed setting to some maximum speed setting
when input is present on the up terminal (10). The rates are
preprogrammed into the module and are setable according to
the rate table shown on the top cover of the DYNS-30000.

Note: This section of the application bulletin assumes that the

installer or operator has some means of detecting engine
speed (RPM), either through a tachometer or another device,
and that the module is wired correctly.
The procedures for setting the speed range potentiometer are
as follows:

Example: When it is desired to ramp an engine from idle speed

to maximum speed in 420 seconds. By looking at the rate table,
it shows that a 420 second ramp time corresponds to all
switches being in the off position. By depressing each of the
five switches to the off position, the ramp rate in the up direction
(increase speed) will be set to 420 seconds. If the operator tries
to continue to increase the speed further by applying input for
longer than 420 seconds, the module will not allow it and will
stop at maximum speed.

Note: This procedure assumes that a small three-position

package, not accessible from the cover, is set correctly. Before
proceeding, remove the cover and you will see a small switch
package in the lower right-hand corner. Make sure all switch
positions are set to off, then continue. Each module is shipped
ready to be used.
1. It is very important that the speed range potentiometer
initially be set to the fully counterclockwise position. Since
this is a 25-turn potentiometer, it would be a good idea to
give the pot 25 turns in the counterclockwise direction. The
speed range potentiometer is shown on the front cover.

Setting The Down Rate Switches (Ramp Time)

A dual-in-line switch package containing five setable switches
determines the time it will take the electronic governor to ramp
from the maximum speed setting down to the idle speed setting
when input is present on the down terminal (9). The same rate
table applies to both the up and down rate switch packages.
Thus if the switch packages are set the same, the up time and
down time will be the same. The user does have the option of
setting these at different rates to suit the variety of applications
that may be encountered.

2. Set the up rate and down rate switches for a ramp time
of 10 seconds. As shown on top cover.
3. Apply power to the electronic governor and the remote
speed setting module
4. Start the engine and set the desired idle speed by adjusting
the speed potentiometer in the electronic governor.

Example: When it is desired that an engine operator be able

to ramp from an idle speed setting to maximum speed setting
in 30 seconds and then be able to ramp back down to the idle
speed setting in 5 seconds In this case the operator would set
all the up-rate switches to the off position and set the downrate switches according to the rate table shown on the top
covers to obtain a ramp time of 5 seconds.

5. Next, hold the up ramp toggle switch in the up position

and hold it there for at least 15 seconds. This will insure that
the module is ramped to its maximum speed setting.
6. With the module sitting at the maximum speed setting, now
turn the speed range potentiometer in the clockwise direction and watch the tachometer. Keep turning the potentiometer in the clockwise direction until the desired maximum
engine RPM is reached.

Note: Question How do I know if the switches in the dualin-line packages are correctly set as far as being in the off
position or the on position?

7. Now ramp the unit down to idle speed by holding the down
ramp toggle switch in the down position. It should take
approximately 10 seconds for the unit to ramp down. Keep
the input applied until the unit is ramped all the way down .
This completes the speed range setting procedure. At this point
the module is ready for use and the operator can reset the
switch packages for any desired up rate or down rate.

Special Output Adjustments

Answer The drawings above should clarify any confusion

about switch settings The easiest way to set the switches is to
apply downward pressure with a small pointed object as
shown, until the switch clicks into position

There are two special adjustments that can be made to the

remote speed setting module that are not accessible with the
cover in place. With the cover removed from the module, a
dual-in-line switch package containing three setable switches
can be located in the lower right-hand corner Switches #2 and
#3 apply to the voltage ranges that are available at the analog
output of the module Switch #1 applies to a function called midrange initialization. The following sections explain these features in more detail

Voltage Range (Configuration)

Mid-range Initialization (Switch #1)

There are three basic output configurations or output voltage

ranges over which the remote speed setting module will
operate. They are as follows:

When the output voltage range switch #1 is in the on position,

the remote speed setting module initializes the output signal to
the governor to be halfway between the minimum speed and
the maximum speed setting.

Minimum Setting
(Fully Ramped Down)
4VDC
0VDC
0VDC

Maximum Setting
(Fully Ramped Up)
8VDC
4VDC
8VDC

Example: A remote speed setting module is being used in an

application where the set speed is desired to be 500 RPM and
the maximum speed is to be 1500 RPM. The module is installed
and adjusted to meet these requirements. If the midrange
initialization option were then applied (Switch #1 in the on
position), the governor would set the speed to 1000 RPM on all
following power up cycles. To disengage this function, simply
place switch #1 in the off position and reapply power to the
module.

Each module is shipped ready to be used in the 4VDC 8VDC

output configuration. Depending on the application, a user
may choose to use one of the other output configurations. The
following table shows the switch settings to implement each of
the different output configurations:

During operation, the output voltage can be returned to the low

(Idle RPM) voltage by connecting terminal 2 to terminal 8 on the
remote speed setting module. The output will remain at the low
voltage setting until the connection is removed. The output
voltage can then be increased by normal operation of the ramp
switch.

* Switch located under top cover. See figure 1. Cover must be

removed to set switches (Output voltage range switches)

Note: Upon removal of the connection, if the remote speed

setting module is in the mid-range initialization, (switch #1 on)
then the output voltage will immediately return to halfway
between the minimum and maximum speed setting (see MidRange Initialization section).

Installation of the DYNS-30000

The following diagram shows a typical installation of the DYNS-30000 for controlling engine speed from remote locations using
single-pole, double-throw toggle switches with a center-off position. Although it is not necessary, operation will be smoother with
switches that are momentarily in the "on" positions.

*Shielded Cable should be purchased from Barber-Colman or

customer should purchase a cable with a wrapped mylar supported
aluminum foil shield with a drain wire.
