BY BECKY LEADER
DHI Media Correspondent
news@delphosherald.com
NORTHWEST OHIO During the
winter months, it is especially difficult for
the most vulnerable citizens children,
the elderly and the disabled to have
access to proper nutrition.
According to Tommie Harner, assistant/
Fund Development director at the West
Ohio Food Bank (WOFB) in Lima, These
individuals may already be living in a poverty situation but as we all know, heating
and electric costs substantially increase
during the colder time of the year. This
puts a severe strain on them, forcing them
to choose between these costs and purchasing food.
The West Ohio Food Bank serves 11
counties in Northwest and West Central
Ohio, including Hardin, Paulding, Putnam
and Van Wert. According to the findings in
Hunger in America 2014, a study conducted by Feeding America and WOFB, within
the WOFBs service area, an estimated 87
percent of households are food insecure
and 13 percent are food secure.
Food insecurity can have several different effects on individuals. When a child
does not have proper nutrition, it can lead
to lack of attention and constantly feeling
ill. This may eventually lead to the child
dropping out of school and not being able
to pursue a career that could put them into
a situation where he/she would be food
secure. The elderly and the disabled may
suffer health problems that could eventually lead to death if proper nutrition is not
attained. Many elderly and disabled are
also faced with the difficult decision of
whether to pay for necessary medicine or
medical treatment or food.
There are misconceptions as to the difference between a food bank and a food
pantry. WOFB is a food bank. It has the
capacity to store truckloads of food items
that they provide to partner agencies such
as food pantries, backpack programs, etc.

A food pantry has basic home-sized refrigerators and freezers that can store a limited
amount of food at a time, and they serve
individuals who are in need.
In Hardin County, there are six food
pantries, six Commodity Supplement Food
Programs (CSFP) senior food box sites
one shelter, two meal sites and two backpack program sites (Kenton City School
Backpack Program, Alger Backpack
Program). Paulding County operates five
food pantries, one CSFP site, one meal site
and one backpack program site (Blessings
in a Bag). There are six food pantries in
Putnam County, two CSFP sites and two
backpack programs (Ottawa-Glandorf and
St. Peter and Paul Schools KNAP (Keeping
Nutrition Available Program) Sack and
Columbus Groves Bless a Bulldog). Van
Wert County runs four food pantries, two
CSFP sites, one meal site and one shelter.
Harner said that during the 2013 calendar year, WOFB distributed 5,264,317
meals throughout the 11-county service
area. During October 2014 (the most recent
statistics available), throughout the service
area there were 17,538 individuals who
received 30,963 meals through one of the
feeding sites. Households with minor children were served as follows: elderly (age
60+)- 1,048; adults (age 18-59)- 10,908,
and children (ages 0-17)- 12,570. In households without minor children, 4,310 elderly and 8,021 adults were served.
The holiday season traditionally brings
to the forefront efforts to help those less
fortunate. There are many ways individuals
can help fight the hunger problem in our area.
At West Ohio Food Bank, for every dollar
that we receive, we are able to provide eight
meals to individuals in need, Harner commented. Our hope is that our current and past
supporters will continue to give to WOFB,
and if able, increase their contributions. In
order for WOFB to continue its current level
of food distribution, we need an additional
$300,000.

Older Ohioans:
Win winter with
tips to prevent falls

Tax, charter-school changes

on Kasich 2015 agenda

INFORMATION
SUBMITTED
COLUMBUS
As
autumn comes to a close,
pledge to win winter by
taking small steps to avoid
a life-changing fall. One
in three older Ohioans will
fall this year, and the snow
and ice of an Ohio winter increase those odds.
However, most falls can be
prevented by understanding
your risk factors and being
more aware of your surroundings.
Falls are not a normal
part of aging, just as slipping and sliding need not be
part of winter, said Bonnie
K. Burman, Sc.D., director of the Ohio Department
of Aging. Winning winter
starts with making a pledge
to stay falls-free no matter
what Mother Nature throws
at us.
STEADY U Ohio, the
states falls prevention initiative, offers tips to help
you win winter by preventing falls:
Dress Defensively Bundle up, but make sure
you can see in all directions
and move easily and freely.
Wear sturdy shoes or boots
with good treads. Wear sunglasses to reduce glare on
surfaces.
Walk Wisely - Slow down
and pay attention to how
and where youre walking.
Allow extra time to get to
where youre going. Keep
sidewalks and stairs outside your home clean of ice
and snow, and keep cords
and clutter out of walkways
inside.
Pack Power - Carry a
small baggie of salt, sand
or kitty litter in your coat
for traction on icy paths.
Replace worn rubber tips
on canes, walkers and
crutches.
Keep Connected - Carry
a cell phone and designate
someone to call for help if
you need it. Let loved ones
know when you are leaving
the house and when you
expect to be back; call them
after you return home.
Healthy Habits - Do
some light stretching before
you venture out. Drink
plenty of water to prevent
dehydration, which can
affect your balance. Stay
active all winter to maintain strength and balance.

The Baby Land building was demolished Wednesday at the Van Wert County
Fairgrounds. (Submitted photo)

Baby Land at Van Wert

Fairgrounds torn down
DHI MEDIA STAFF REPORTS
news@delphosherald.com

was scheduled to be broken this week. A

60-day capital campaign to raise funds for
the building will begin in January. The
new building is estimated to cost between
$200,000-$300,000 depending on the amount
of volunteer time and effort received. Plans
are to have the building ready to be used by
summer, especially by the time of the 2015
Van Wert County Fair which begins Sept. 2,
2015.
Baby Land is not gone forever though. For
2015, the fair board is considering putting up
a tent at the site of the old Farm Bureau facility. The next step will then be to construct
a new facility for Baby Land for the future.
Anyone interested in donating time or efforts
should contact either the Van Wert County
Farm Bureau or the Van Wert County fair
board.

VAN WERT Another big change at

the Van Wert County Fairgrounds happened
Wednesday with the demolition of the building known as Baby Land. The building which
housed restrooms, showers, some animal
entries and some young of many common
species became nearly open space for the time
being. That patch of ground will soon house
the new Farm Bureau Building.
The new building will take the Farm
Bureau out of the tent and small building
which has housed it in recent years. The Farm
Bureau Building will also contain new restrooms and showers to replace those that were
in the Baby Land building.

COLUMBUS (AP) Gov. John Kasich said Thursday he

plans to push back even harder against detractors during his
second term, as he tries to further reduce Ohios income tax
and enact regulations on charter schools.
The governors remarks dominated a lunchtime event where he was
joined by fellow Republicans, Senate
President Keith Faber and retiring
House Speaker William Batchelder.
The outspoken Kasich joked
before an audience hosted by the
Ohio Chamber of Commerce that he
has held back during his first four
years in office.
Im going to have a lot more to
say this term for those that stand in
my way, he said. Im shy and Im
Kasich
pulling myself out of my shell.
Kasich said he would continue to
focus on cutting the states income tax rate. Asked whether he
would look to businesses to help make up the lost revenue, the
governor said firmly, Everybodys going to have to be part of
tax reform.
Kasich has gotten push back from business- and industryrelated groups for trying to increase the states tobacco tax and
the tax rate on Ohios oil and gas drillers. He encouraged the
groups to work with him.
You are not going to get this done by just slashing government spending, Kasich said.
Faber, who will return to lead the Senate next year, hinted
that smaller employers could see tax changes.
Weve got to eliminate the small-business tax in my view,
Faber said. I think its unfair. I think its discriminatory.
Kasich said his budget, due in February, would impose
tougher rules on charter schools.
We will not tolerate people coming into this state, making
money at the expense of great education for our kids, Kasich
said, while adding that he supported vouchers and school choice.
Kasichs remarks followed release of an extensive study
this week by Stanford Universitys Center for Research on
Education Outcomes that found Ohio charter schools performance results are mediocre. The report found students attending charter schools fall behind their counterparts in traditional
public schools by 14 days on average in reading and 43 days
in math over the course of a school year.

The Value of Fasting

There are lots of good reasons to limit our intake of food, ranging from health
and financial reasons to emotional and spiritual benefits. An ancient idea that has
recently gained traction is the practice of fasting. Instead of trying to limit ones
calories each and every day, some scientists are proposing the idea of Alternate-Day
Fasting or ADF. ADF regimens typically allow the person (or animal, lots of experiments have been done using rats and mice) to eat whatever he or she wants one day
and then requires them to fast or consume a very limited number of calories the
next day. More research needs to be done, but preliminary findings are promising,
suggesting that ADF may reduce the risk of diabetes, heart disease and even cancer.
Some are even suggesting we could live longer if we followed an ADF regimen.
But, how might such a regimen benefit us emotionally and spiritually? Fasting and
self-mortification can obviously be taken to extremes where they become unhealthy
and even life-threatening. But, most of us suffer from the opposite problem: we are
too self-indulgent. Delayed gratification and a sense of accomplishment is one of
the byproducts of a successful fast. Eating can bring momentary pleasure but controlling ones appetites gives a deeper sense of lasting joy.
Christopher Simon

When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their
faces to show others they are fasting.
Matthew 6: 16

Our local churches invite you to join them for their activities and services.

Tribe takes measure of Lady Jays

By JIM METCALFE
DHI Media Sports Editor
jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com
FORT RECOVERY When you
hold a basketball team to 41 points, you
expect to have a fairly decent shot at
winning said game.
Alas for the St. Johns Lady Blue
Jays, their offense was in the doldrums,
accounting for Thursday nights 41-21
Midwest Athletic Conference loss at the
Fort Site Fieldhouse.
Right now, we dont have the confidence or toughness as a group to step
up and take the shot. Right now, we are
waiting for someone else to do it and
its not getting down, St. Johns mentor Dan J. Grothouse lamented. If you
look at the video, you will see several
times more than several when we
had open looks and passed them up.
That just makes it harder to get open
looks, especially against a good defense
like this.
The Lady Indians (3-2, 1-1 MAC)
utilized a lengthy 1-2-2 zone defense
in both the full court, even on misses,
and the half court with the likes of
6-0 Whitney Will on the point. That
made things very difficult for the Jays
(2-4, 0-2), not only to get inside but to
shoot over the top. The Blue and Gold
shot an anemic 6-of-29 from the field,
1-of-11 long range, for 20.7 percent and
also committed 19 miscues (18 for the
hosts).
It started in the opening period as the
Tribe scored the first six points, forcing
Grothouse to call a halt at 4:10. The Jays
managed to steady things for the rest of

the period, sliding within 10-6 on a transition layin by senior Rebekah Fischer
with 40 ticks left.
The Indians defense held the
Jays scoreless for the first 5:24 of
the second period a fielder by
senior Tara Vorst (2:36). On the
other end, the Tribe was a smooth
6-of-11 from the field (16-of-32
for the game, 3-of-6 from deep,
for 50%) in erecting a 23-8 bulge
on a triple from the right wing by
Kara Jutte at 1:15. A runner in the
lane by junior Rachel Pohlman at
49 ticks reduced the Jays deficit
to 23-10 at the half.
The third period was one
8-minute span the Jays would
like to forget a big, fat goose
egg. They missed all five attempts
from the field and both free
throws (8-of-12 for the game for
66.7%), as well as turning it over
seven times. The defense did all
it could forcing seven Recovery miscues but the home crew shot 4-of-7 to
build a 32-10 lead on a putback by 6-2
Kendra Siefring at 1:40.
The Jays finally broke their drought
on a long deuce from sophomore
Madilynn Schulte at 6:00 of the fourth
and did whittle the deficit down to 35-18
at one point but it went no farther.
We were OK defensively. We had
a few breakdowns but generally, we
played good enough that any other night,
wed have given ourselves a chance to
win, Grothouse added.
St. Johns grabbed 19 rebounds (6
offensive) as junior Sydney Fischbach
and sophomore Jessica Geise had four

each; and eight fouls in a very clean

game. They visit Shawnee 6 p.m. (junior
varsity start) Monday.
Fort Recovery ended 6-of-11
at the line (54.5%); secured 26
caroms (7 offensive) as Will had
six; and 12 fouls.
In the 2-quarter JV game, the
Indians whipped the 5-girl Jays
(2-4, 0-2) 24-8.
Carley Stone led the victors
with 10, while the Jays were
topped by three from Hannah
Bockey.

Mustangs overwhelm Lincolnview

BY DANIEL JOSEPH
DHI Media Correspondent
news@delphosherald.com
HARROD Following their 50-point victory over the
Perry Commodores on Tuesday night, the Lady Lancers traveled to Allen East for the start of Northwest Conference play.
The Lady Mustangs showed early that Lincolnview would
have a much tougher battle and eventually ran off to a 53-41
win.
After a pair of Ashton Bowersock free throws and a Julia
Thatcher jump shot from the elbow, the Lady Lancers found
themselves tied with Allen East with 3:57 remaining in the
first quarter. Allen East grabbed the next four points
before a Claire Clay layup brought the Lancers back
to within two. Kylie Wyss and Carly Clum then each
scored buckets for the Lady Mustangs before the end
of the quarter, leaving Lincolnview trailing 13-6 after
one.
Things were held in check for both teams to begin
the second quarter before a Julia Thatcher 3-pointer got the
Lady Lancers within four but Allen east took a 23-16 led into
the halftime locker room.
Allen East jumped out to an 11-point lead to begin the second half and they didnt look back. The Lady Lancers pulled
to within single digits many times in the before the game came
to a close but Allen East seemed to always have an answer.
We cut the lead down a few times but we just couldnt
seem to get over the hump, Lancer coach Dan Williamson
noted. We had a couple of in-and-out shots there at the end
that might of changed things; you never know.
The Lady Lancers struggled shooting the ball in Thursdays
contest, hitting just 30 percent of their shots from the field and
18 percent from beyond he arc.
Allen East, on the other hand, shot an impressive 48 per-

cent from the field, 40 percent from 3-point territory.

We just didnt have it tonight, said Williamson. We
didnt make shots that we usually make, which happens in the
game of basketball, but they shot the ball extremely well. They
made plays when they needed to.
Lincolnview had a hard time defending the paint as they
allowed 30 points from close range, 16 of those coming from Wyss.
Weve played against teams that have more size than her
(Wyss); she was just very strong, said Williamson of Adas
standout junior. She was tough for us to handle tonight. She
was definitely the difference in the game. She scored a lot of
points and got several offensive and defensive rebounds. She
had a heck of a game.
Senior Julia Thatcher paced the Lancers with 22
points in the loss, accounting for more than half of
her teams scoring on the night. Classmate Hannah
McCleery also came up big for Williamsons club
with eight rebounds, five being offensive.
Thats kind of what weve come to expect of these
two girls, said Williamson on Thatcher and McCleery.
Julia took the team on her shoulders and thats what we need
her to do in tense situations like tonight. Hannah is a very
scrappy player and a great rebounder for someone of her size.
Without these two, we would struggle against anybody.
With the loss, the Lady Lancers fall to 4-2 on the season
and 0-1 in the Northwest Conference. They next play on
Tuesday at home against Wayne Trace.
Lincolnview came away with 39-30 win in the junior varsity matchup.

COLUMBUS GROVE
After spotting Jefferson a 5-0
lead, Columbus Grove took
control and proceeded to a
57-26 Northwest Conference
victory Thursday night inside
The Dog Pound of Columbus
Grove High School.
We actually took the
early lead but
we struggled
with two of
the areas we
were most cocnerned about coming into the
season: ballhandling particularly because of our inexperience
and our
shooting,
Jefferson
m e n tor
Dave
Hoffman
observed.
We had way too many turnovers, especially early when
they were building their lead,
and we just didnt shoot well;
we only had five field goals.
We did hit 16-of-25 at the
line, so we were attacking the
rim. We just didnt convert on
enough chances; they came
out in a press and we did get
some baskets beating it but
not enough.
Sophomore Jade Clement
caught fire to pace the Lady
Bulldogs with 20 markers,
including three bombs, while
junior Brooke Hoffman added
10 (2 treys).
Clement had 17 the first
half. We didnt do a good job
executing our defense with
her, the coach continued.
We went to a box-and-1 the
second half and held her to
three the second half but they
had some other girls pick up
the slack. They are a very
good shooting team.
Pacing the Lady Wildcats
(2-4, 1-1 NWC) were senior
Brooke Culp with seven and
junior Tori Black five.
We have talked all year
about making positive steps
every practice and every
game; we didnt tonight,
Coach Hoffman added. I
look at our loss to Kalida
Saturday and even though
it was by 24, we did some
things well, especially defensively. I can honestly say we
didnt continue to improve
off of that tonight, not only
defensively but everywhere
else.
Jefferson hosts New

OTTAWA Van Wert rallied early in the third quarter
to take a lead on OttawaGlandorf.
Although they had a little
bit of momentum, the Cougars
were unable to hold off the
Titans. After falling behind,
O-Gs offense got in sync just
long enough to manufacture
a 12-2 run. That run allowed
O-G to get the necessary
momentum they needed as
they went on to record a 49-39
Western Buckeye League win
at the Robert J. Hermiller
Gymnasium Thursday night.
The win moved O-G to 1-1
in the WBL and 4-1 overall,
while the Cougars slipped to
1-1 in the league and 2-4
overall.
Ottawa-Glandorf
had
a 25-20 halftime lead, but
struggled offensively to start
the third quarter. Van Wert
took advantage of the Titans
inability to score getting a pair
of baskets from senior Alexa
Dunlap and a three-pointer by
senior Erin Morrow with five
minutes left in the quarter for
a 27-25 lead.
That is when the Titans
offense found their stroke,
thanks in part to their defensive pressure. The Titans
pressure started to force turnovers that O-G turned into
points during their 12-2 run
that gave them a 37-29 lead.

Bengals heading back

Browns, Thomas likely
into withering spotlight to miss playoffs again
By JOE KAY
Associated Press

CINCINNATI Two big

goals are still out there for
the Cincinnati Bengals: Shine
in prime time, win in the
playoffs.
The AFC North leaders
have a chance to put a dent
in the first one on Monday
night when they host Denver
(11-3), which has already
clinched the AFC West.
Throughout their history, the
Bengals (9-4-1) have been at
their worst at nighttime.
Cincinnati is 18-41 alltime in prime time, including
10-20 on Monday night. The
Bengals have been beaten
badly by New England and
Cleveland in their two night
games this season, reinforcing their reputation as a team
that withers under the brightest lights.
Its a label theyd love to
eliminate.
Its annoying and its our
job to make it unannoying,
safety George Iloka said on
Thursday. If we lose this
game, the talk will come back
again.
And if we want to silence
the critics, so to say, weve
got to put up or shut up.
Thats how it goes. It might
be annoying, but thats on
us.
For now, thats how
theyre known.
A loss at home to San

Diego in the first round of the

playoffs last season cemented
their reputation as a team
that cant handle the toughest
pressure. Cincinnati has lost
in the opening round each of
the last three postseasons and
hasnt won a playoff game
since the 1990 season.
And then there are those
high-profile
games at night.
The Bengals
went to New
England determined to shake
their
reputation in a Sunday
night game, but
got pushed around throughout a 43-17 loss. Their next
chance in prime time came
in a Thursday night game at
home against Cleveland, a
24-3 loss that only made matters worse.
Defensive end Wallace
Gilberry said he has no idea
why playing in prime time
bothers the team.
I guess were afraid of
the dark. I have no idea,
he said. But I can tell you
this: Were going to come out
Monday and were going to
put our best foot forward.
That would be a first. And
in order for it to happen,
Andy Dalton is going to have
to play well.
The fourth-year quarterback is 0-3 in the playoffs
and 2-6 in prime time games.
During the Thursday night

loss to Cleveland, he completed only 10 passes, threw

three interceptions and finished with a career-low passer rating of 2.0.
A lot of it is on the quarterback.
Its well documented
whatever the record is, 2-6.
Ive heard all kinds of stuff.
Trust me, I get
enough emails,
letters, cards,
advice,
all
kinds of stuff,
offensive coordinator
Hue
Jackson said. I
do understand
whats at stake, and I think he
does, too.
In the big games, Dalton
has made the biggest mistakes, losing the ball on fumbles and interceptions. That
has to change.
We cant make mistakes,
we cant turn the ball over,
weve got to be sound in
our execution, Dalton said.
And if we do that, well put
ourselves in a lot better position than we did in the other
ones.
Notes: Receiver A.J.
Green did his conference
call with media in Denver on
Thursday, then was excused
from practice because he
was sick. Cornerback Dre
Kirkpatrick (Achilles tendon)
and defensive end Carlos
Dunlap (calf) were held out
of practice as well.

BEREA Year after year its the
same thing: the Browns collapse in
December or even earlier, miss the playoffs and left tackle Joe Thomas makes
the Pro Bowl.
Book it again. Well, not just yet.
Clevelands chances of making the
AFC playoffs are hanging by the thinnest thread as the Browns (7-7) head into
Sundays game at Carolina.
With three straight losses, the
Browns have slipped from
the thick of the race to having one foot in the bleachers
watching it.
I dont know what it is
mathematically, Thomas
said of the Browns slender playoff
hopes. But the chances are pretty dang
slim.
For all his personal accomplishments,
Thomas has yet to participate in the playoffs. Its the lone blemish on his stellar
career, which includes seven straight Pro
Bowl trips and could one day see him
enshrined in Canton. On Wednesday,
Thomas was named the teams player of
the year by the local chapter of the Pro
Football Writers of America and after
being informed of his win, he had to
address his personal playoff drought.
I certainly want to go to the playoffs, said Thomas. I wish we could
go every year. We were pretty close this
year, but we werent able to finish. I
certainly would like to make it at least
once before I retire.

Thomas has seen it all during his

time with the Browns, and most of it
has been bad. Cleveland went 10-6 his
rookie season, barely missing the playoffs under coach Romeo Crennel. But
the Browns lost at least 11 games in each
of the next six seasons before finally
ending that futility this year. Thomas
has endured late-season slides, coaching
changes, front office purges, an ownership switch and an almost constant shuffling of quarterbacks, including Johnny
Manziel recently taking over
for Brian Hoyer.
Incredibly, Thomas, who
has never missed a snap
(7,810 and counting in the
NFL) has blocked for 13 different starting quarterbacks
and played for five coaches
under six general managers.
Its been tough enough to watch. For
Thomas, its been his football life.
And despite the Browns struggles,
Thomas believes good days are ahead.
The mention of another offseason overhaul triggered a hearty laugh from
Thomas.
It would be shocking to me if they
didnt want to keep this good nucleus
that we have right now going, he said.
And I think they will. Theres no reason
we shouldnt. Its a matter of retaining
our good players and drafting more good
ones as they come.
They dont come much better than
Thomas, who has earned the admiration
of his teammates with a consistent work
ethic and attention to detail. He epitomizes the selfless, team player.

Jones leads Ohio State vs. Alabama

COLUMBUS Cardale
Jones realizes many people
werent even aware he was
still playing football.
It had been five years
between big games a
state championship game as
a junior in high school to
the Big Ten title game Dec.

heard of him was because
of an infamous tweet where
he wrote going to class was

With a breakthrough game
in the 59-0 rout of Wisconsin
two weeks ago, Jones has
suddenly reappeared.
Jones was an overlooked
third-string quarterback just
four months ago. Now the
third-year sophomore is the
central figure in a Buckeyes
offense heading into the
national semifinal game
against Alabama at the Sugar
Bowl on Jan. 1.

Gradually, Jones returned
to the good graces of his
coaches, although the tweet
was never forgotten by others. Its brought up frequently
by those who hate college
football, hate Ohio State or
hate the system of unpaid
athletes straining to fit into
a dated code of amateurism.
Miller started for three
years, but injured his shoulder
in the 2014 Orange Bowl loss
to Clemson and had surgery.
Jones won the starting job coming out of spring practice, beating out J.T. Barrett, a redshirt
freshman.
But when Miller reinjured the shoulder in August,
Barrett, coming off a couple
of weeks of superior practices, was selected as the starter.
Barrett was spectacular,
setting Ohio State records for
touchdown passes (35) and
total offense (3,772) before
breaking his ankle against
Michigan.
Jones finished that game,
then got his first start in the
rarified air of the Big Ten title
game where he completed 12
of 17 passes for 257 yards
and the three scores without
an interception and with very
few missteps.

The Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl

tonight could be dubbed: The Rivalry,
Volume 9.
The game in Salem, Virginia, determines the NCAA Division III football champion, and in nine of the last
10 seasons, it has been the same two
teams Mount Union and WisconsinWhitewater squaring off.
For the second year in a row, change
is afoot in the rivalry.
Last season was Vince Kehres first
as coach of Mount Union, his father
Larry having retired with a career mark
of 332-24-3 and 11 national championships in 27 seasons after guiding the
Purple Raiders.
This years game will be Whitewater
coach Lane Leipolds last with the
Warhawks. Hes leaving after the season
to become the coach at Buffalo of the
FBS, and if his team can prevail for the
fifth time in the last six matchups, hell
leave with a 111-6 career record and as
many national titles, six, as losses.
The younger Kehres has only lost
once in 29 games 52-14 last season
to the Warhawks. It was Mount Unions
worst loss since the 1974 season, and
has provided inspiration and motivation
ever since.
It was humbling and definitely
something I think a lot of our coaches
and players used as a motivation to try
and get back to this point with a better
opportunity to win, Kehres said this
week.
We asked them to man up and own
up to the fact that we took a pretty bad
beating there at the end of the year and
in order to get better, we needed to get
deeper, we needed to play more men,
we needed to improve in all areas of the
team, and I think they bought into that
and theyve done that to this point.
While the Purple Raiders have rolled
through the playoffs, the Warhawks have
not. Two weeks ago, they rallied from
a 33-16 fourth-quarter deficit to beat
Wartburg 37-33. Last week, they were
deadlocked at 14 with Linfield until
tailback Dennis Moore broke free for a
33-yard scoring run with 5:00 to play.
Weve been tested, Leipold said.
Weve had to find a way to win games
and play 60 minutes.
The gaudy numbers dont stop with
the coaches.
Mount Union quarterback Kevin
Burke, who on Wednesday night became

the first two-time winner of the Gagliardi

Award as the best player in Division III,
will enter his final college game with a
43-1 record as a starter. In 14 games, he
has completed 65 percent of his passes
(265-405) for 4,089 yards and 49 touchdowns, the most in the country, with five
interceptions. Hes run for 520 yards and
10 touchdowns.
Last week, the Purple Raiders beat
Wesley 70-21 in the semifinals.
Whitewater quarterback Matt
Behrendt has been similarly spectacular,
throwing for 3,305 yards and 38 touchdowns while completing 67.2 percent
(252-375) of his throws. Hes thrown
just six interceptions.
In last years title game, Behrendt
upstaged Burke, throwing for four
touchdowns, but Kehres said the story of
the game and the lesson taken from it
was more about how the Warhawks
defense dominated.
Were playing with a lot of confidence right now. Were playing with
great tempo and were executing at a
high level, he said. All we have to
do is look back at the film from a year
ago and the success that their defense
had against us to know that we can easily be defended by a good defense.
No-confidence for UAB head over
football scuttling
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. Faculty
members at the University of Alabama
at Birmingham have drafted a no-confidence resolution against the president following his decision to drop the
schools football program despite it finishing with its best record in years.
The document, released Thursday by
the university, accuses UAB President
Ray Watts of failing to share governance
of the university with faculty members.
The decision to eliminate football
came after first-year coach Bill Clark
led the team to a record of 6-6, the best
in years. Average attendance doubled
this year to more than 20,000 fans per
game, but Watts said the program wasnt
sustainable.
The resolution sites complaints over
a series of moves including the decision to disband football and other athletic programs. A separate resolution
requests a comprehensive analysis of
UAB Athletics that is transparent and
includes consideration of campus-wide
impact for discontinuation of any athletic program.
Watts, who previously expressed
regret over the way he handled the foot-

39 bowl games and a reason to watch every one

By RALPH D. RUSSO
Associated Press
Over the next three weeks, 38 bowl games
and a national championship game will be
played from Boise to the Bahamas and various points in between. You should watch
them all. Heres why:
Saturday, Dec. 20
R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl
Nevada (minus 1) vs. Louisiana-Lafayette
Why watch? Someone thought it would be
fun to start a football game at 10 a.m. in New
Orleans. Wait for the crowd shots and try to
spot the fans who went straight from Bourbon
Street to the Superdome.
Pick: LOUISIANA-LAFAYETTE 28-24.
Gildan New Mexico Bowl in Albuquerque
UTEP (plus 10) vs. Utah State
Why watch? Brothers Zach and Nick Vigil
play linebacker for Utah State and have
combined for 181 tackles. Every time a Vigil
makes a tackle, take a sip of your favorite
beverage. We would suggest Dr Pepper if you
plan to watch the second half.
Pick: UTAH STATE 31-14.
Royal Purple Las Vegas Bowl
Colorado State (plus 3) vs. Utah
Why watch? Your last memory of Utes star
receiver/returner Kaelin Clay should not be
of him absent-mindedly dropping the football
a yard short of the end zone against Oregon.
One of the most exciting special teams players in the country plays his last college game.
Pick: UTAH 30-21.
Famous Idaho Potato Bowl in Boise
Western Michigan (plus 1 1/2) vs. Air
Force
Why watch? The winning team will be the
owner of the biggest turnaround season in the
country. Both the Broncos (8-4) and Falcons
(9-3) have already won seven more games
than they did last year.
Pick: WESTERN MICHIGAN 27-23.
Raycom Camelia Bowl in Montgomery,
Alabama
Bowling Green (plus 3) vs. South Alabama
Why watch? Do you like hockey? South
Alabama QB Brandon Bridge was born in
Toronto. His nickname is Air Canada.
Close enough.
Pick: BOWLING GREEN 42-24.
Monday, Dec. 22
Miami Beach Bowl
BYU (plus 1) vs. Memphis
Why watch? By next season Memphis
Justin Fuente will be the coach you want your
school to hire.
Pick: MEMPHIS 30-28.
Tuesday, Dec. 23
Boca Raton Bowl
Marshall (minus 10) vs. Northern Illinois
Why watch? Outside of the College
Football Playoff semifinals, this is the only
bowl game matching conference champions.
Pick: MARSHALL 45-38.
San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia
Bowl
Navy (plus 3) vs. San Diego State
Why watch? Every time Navy QB Keenan
Reynolds scores a touchdown you get to reminisce about a college football star from the
past. Remember how great Ron Dayne was?
Reynolds next TD will be No. 63, matching
the Wisconsin Heisman Trophy winner. Two
more touchdowns pulls Reynolds even with
Indiana great Anthony Thompson and Texas
star Cedric Benson.
Pick: NAVY 28-24.
Wednesday, Dec. 24
Popeyes Bahamas Bowl in Nassau
Western Kentucky (minus 3 1/2) vs.
Central Michigan

Why watch? Its a football game on a

tropical island, with the possibility of limitless access to fried chicken. This is paradise.
Pick: Three-piece spicy with a biscuit and
Cajun rice. And WESTERN KENTUCKY
38-28.
Hawaii Bowl in Honolulu
Rice (minus 2) vs. Fresno State
Why watch? What else are you going to
do while putting together that doll house or
bicycle on the night before Christmas?
Pick: RICE 27-21.
Friday, Dec. 26
Zaxbys Heart of Dallas Bowl
Illinois (plus 6) vs. Louisiana Tech
Why watch? Its the day after Christmas.
Havent you spent enough time
with your family?
Pick: ILLINOIS 35-24.
Quick Lane Bowl in Detroit
Rutgers (plus 3) vs. North
Carolina
Why watch? Great player you
probably dont know: Rutgers WR
Leonte Carroo, who averages more
yards per catch (19.68) than any 1,000-yard
receiver in the country.
Pick: RUTGERS 42-38.
Bitcoin St. Petersburg Bowl
UCF (minus 2) vs. N.C. State
Why watch? Maybe UCF coach George
OLeary can explain what Bitcoin is.
Pick: UCF 28-23.
Saturday, Dec. 27
Military Bowl Presented by Northrop
Grumman in Annapolis, Maryland
Virginia Tech (plus 3) vs. Cincinnati
Why watch? Virgina Techs offense is terrible. Cincinnatis defense is awful. Lets see
what happens.
Pick: VIRGINIA TECH 33-24.
Hyundai Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas
Duke (plus 7) vs. Arizona State
Why watch: Lots of great freshmen running backs around the country this season.
Two that didnt get a lot of attention face off:
Dukes Shaun Wilson (8.0 yards per carry)
and Arizona States Demario Richard (5.6
per carry).
Pick: ARIZONA STATE 38-21.
Duck Commander Independence Bowl in
Shreveport, Louisiana.
Miami (minus 3 1/2) vs. South Carolina
Why watch? What if I told you the next
ESPN 30-for-30 on The U. could start in a
Bossier City, Louisiana, casino?
Pick: SOUTH CAROLINA 24-17.
New Era Pinstripe Bowl in New York
Boston College (minus 2 1/2) vs. Penn
State
Why watch? Get a look at the most underappreciated coaching job this season. BCs
Steve Addazio won seven games in what even
he thought might be a rebuilding year.
PICK: BOSTON COLLEGE 21-14
National University Holiday Bowl in San
Diego
Nebraska (plus 6 1/2) vs. Southern
California
Why watch? Your friends who only casually follow college football will think this is
a huge game.
Pick: USC 31-21.
Monday, Dec. 29
Autozone Liberty Bowl in Memphis,
Tennessee
West Virginia (minus 3 1/2) vs. Texas
A&M
Why watch? Get a glimpse of two promising young quarterbacks: Texas A&M will
start freshman Kyle Allen. West Virginias
Skyler Howard might only get spot duty,
depending on the health of starter Clint

Trickett.
Pick: TEXAS A&M 42-35.
Russell Athletic Bowl in Orlando, Florida
Clemson (plus 3) vs. Oklahoma
Why watch? Former Oklahoma defensive
coordinator Brent Venables now leads the
Clemson D. Its the Vena-bowl!
Pick: CLEMSON 20-17.
Texas Bowl in Houston
Texas (plus 6) vs. Arkansas
Why watch? Do you long for the days when
football teams only passed when absolutely
necessary? Then Longhorns-Razorbacks is
for you. Only two SEC teams have thrown
fewer passes than Arkansas. Only one Big 12
team averages fewer yards passing per game
than Texas.
Pick: ARKANSAS 21-13.
Tuesday, Dec. 30
Franklin American Mortgage
Music City Bowl in Nashville,
Tennessee
Notre Dame (plus 7 1/2) vs.
LSU
Why watch? Notre Dame QB
Everett Golson (22 turnovers) embraces the
spirit of giving that makes the holiday season
special.
Pick: LSU 34-21.
Belk Bowl in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Louisville (plus 7) vs. Georgia
Why watch? We were deprived of a full
season of Louisville WR Devante Parker, who
played in only five games because of a broken
foot and still caught 35 passes for 735 yards.
Get one last look him in a Cardinals uniform.
Pick: LOUISVILLE 28-24.
Foster Farms Bowl in Santa Clara,
California
Stanford (minus 14) vs. Maryland
Why watch? The season is almost over
and you probably need another reminder that
Maryland is now in the Big Ten.
Pick: STANFORD 31-14
Wednesday, Dec. 31
Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl in Atlanta
Mississippi (plus 3 1/2) vs. TCU
Why watch? Land sharks (Ole Miss
defense) vs. Air Frogs (TCU offense).
Pick: TCU 34-27.
Vizio Fiesta Bowl in Glendale, Arizona
Boise State (plus 3 1/2) vs. Arizona
Why watch? Boise State returns to the
site of its greatest triumphs, trying to score
another victory for the little guys.
Pick: ARIZONA 45-28.
Capital One Orange Bowl in Miami
Mississippi State (minus 7) vs. Georgia
Tech
Why watch? The theory is that given
time several weeks to prepare, bowl opponents figure out Georgia Techs triple-option
offense. Hence, the Yellow Jackets 1-5 bowl
record under coach Paul Johnson. Watch the
Bulldogs test that theory, and then watch
Johnson get testy with the first person who
asks him about it in the postgame.
Picks: MISSISSIPPI STATE 38-28.
Thursday, Jan. 1
Outback Bowl in Tampa, Florida
Wisconsin (plus 6 1/2) vs. Auburn
Why watch? Wisconsin star Melvin
Gordon needs 293 yards rushing to break
Barry Sanders FBS single-season record.
Totally doable.
Picks: AUBURN 38-30.
Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic at
Arlington, Texas
Michigan State (plus 3) vs. Baylor
Why watch? Baylor wanted to be in the
playoff. Last chance to show the selection
committee it was wrong.
Pick: MICHIGAN STATE 38-31.

Roundup

College Football FBS Bowl Glance

(Continued from page 6)

Senior Elissa Ellerbrock opened the run with a basket, then
40 seconds later grabbed an offensive rebound that she turned
into two points to give the Titans the lead for good. Anna
Bellman pushed the Titan lead to four with two free throws
before Cougar senior Emily Bair hit two free throws. Two free
throws by Elissa Ellerbrock, a basket by Erin Basinger and a
fastbreak basket by Dani Ellerbrock had O-G up 37-29. The
Cougars pulled with 37-30 with five seconds left in the quarter
when Dunlap hit the first of two free throws. Thats how the two
teams would go into the fourth quarter.

Description

Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl in

Orlando, Florida
Minnesota (plus 5) vs. Missouri
Why watch? Flip over from the Cotton
Bowl every once in a while. Maybe youll
find out why Minnesota tight end Maxx
Williams, a second-team All-American, has
that extra x.
Pick: Minnesota 23-20.
Rose Bowl presented by Northwestern
Mutual in Pasadena, California
Playoff semifinal: Oregon (minus 9) vs.
Florida State
Why watch? Sure a spot in the championship game is on the line, but this matchup
between Marcus Mariota and Jameis Winston
also kicks off ESPNs nonstop, four-month
NFL draft coverage. Winston throws a pick.
Thatll cost him five spots on the big board.
Mariota stays in the pocket to throw a TD.
Stock up!
Pick: FLORIDA STATE 34-29.
Allstate Sugar Bowl in New Orleans
Playoff semifinal: Alabama (minus 9 1/2)
vs. Ohio State
Why watch? Two heavyweight programs
with superstar coaches that most fans love to
hate, and somebody has to win. Look on the
bright side haters, somebody also has to lose.
Enjoy the misery.
Pick: ALABAMA 28-17.
Friday, Jan. 2
Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl in
Fort Worth, Texas
Pittsburgh (minus 3) vs. Houston
Why watch? Because interim coaches
both teams have one are people, too.
Pick: PITTSBURGH 23-17.
TaxSlayer Bowl in Jacksonville, Florida
Iowa (plus 3) vs. Tennessee
Why watch? To see Iowa All-America
tackle Brandon Scherff. Trust us. There wont
be much else to watch offensively from the
Hawkeyes (79th in the country in yards per
play) and Volunteers (115th in ypp).
Pick: TENNESSEE 17-14.
Valero Alamo Bowl in San Antonio
UCLA (plus 1) vs. Kansas State
Why watch? You never know which UCLA
team will show up. The one that crushed
Arizona State and USC? Or the one that was
crushed by Oregon and Stanford?
Pick: UCLA 31-23.
Ticketcity Cactus Bowl in Tempe, Arizona
Oklahoma State (plus 5 1/2) vs. Washington
Why watch? Shaq Thompson at linebacker
for the Washington. Shaq Thompson at running back. Wonder what kind of arm he has?
Pick: WASHINGTON 24-14.
Saturday, Jan. 3
Birmingham (Alabama) Bowl
Florida (minus 7) vs. East Carolina
Why watch? Find out why Florida just
agreed to pay $5 million to hire Colorado
States coach.
Pick: FLORIDA 31-21.
GoDaddy Bowl in Mobile, Alabama
Toledo (minus 3) vs. Arkansas State
Why watch? Its the fourth straight appearance for Arkansas State and the first time
youll actually get to see their coach in
Mobile. The past three years the Red Wolves
have had interim coaches by the time they
played in the postseason.
Pick: Toledo 28-20
College Football Playoff Championship in
Arlington, Texas
Florida State (projected line: minus 7) vs.
Alabama
Why watch? Can the Tide bring the national title back to the Southeastern Conference or
will Florida State repeat as champions?
Pick: Alabama 31-23.

We kind of got back to what we do, O-G coach Troy Yant

said. We played fullcourt pressure, fullcourt man. We didnt
get a lot out of it early, but I think we were wearing on them. I
thought they were getting ready to crack in the second quarter
and we made another rotation and continued hitting them. We
had a lot of good looks, but we only shot 20 some percent the
first half, which is a concern. We did a little more and we outshot them the second half. Now its just a matter of cleaning
things up.
Van Wert coach Lance Moonshower agreed that the Titans
pressure, along with their ability to get offensive rebounds were
two keys to O-G withstanding the Cougars early second half
outburst.
We told the girls we have to stop those runs, Moonshower
said. If they get a four, six point run we have to answer and
get stops. We knew they were the kind of team that could get on
some runs because they push the ball well. If you are a little bit
lazy getting back, they will be back down the court before you
can blink an eye. We had a couple of dirty turnovers, they had a
couple of offensive rebounds and that just killed us right there.
Moonshower said the Van Wert stats had the Titans grabbing
19 offensive rebounds in the contest.
Van Wert pulled within four points to start the fourth quarter
as Morrow converted a three point play. That would be as close
as they would come as O-G ran off the next 10 points for a
47-33 lead with 4:52 left to play. Elissa Ellerbrock had a pair
of baskets in the run, while Danielle Schroeder, Basinger and
Bellman all had a basket. Van Wert would outscore the Titans
6-2 to finish the game as neither team scored in the final two
minutes.
We fought hard tonight. Weve had girls out (injuries) left
and right, lately. We have a lot of new girls playing varsity that
havent been playing varsity, Moonshower said. I have all the
confidence in these girls coming in, but we have girls playing
different positions and they are just a little tentative about what
they should be doing. That indecision leads to turnovers and
against a team like O-G that leads to points.
Morrow led the Cougars with 22 points and Dunlap had nine.
Morrow had 14 points for the Cougars in the opening half and
all eight of Van Werts points in the first quarter.
Elissa Ellerbrock led the Titans with 14 points, Bellman had
13 and Basinger eight.
O-G won the junior varsity contest 36-17.

Ask Mr. Know-it-All

The many faces of Howdy Doody

Q: Was the original
Howdy Doody puppet
replaced by a different
one? -- R.T.L., Saint
Cloud, Minn.
A:
He
was.
Puppeteer
Frank
Paris created the first
Howdy Doody in
1947, but he walked
off the show -- with the
doll -- in 1948, after a
dispute over royalties.
That puppet version is
now known as Ugly
Doody. NBC, in a
frantic search for a
replacement,
hired
puppeteer
Velma
Dawson to create the
more famous version
of Howdy Doody
in just over a week.
Dawson
received
$300 for her puppet
and no residuals.
There have been a
few duplicate Howdy
Doody puppets: One
was called Double
Doody and the other
Photo Doody, a
puppet without strings
that was used for
photographs.

dance I feel alive and free.
My boyfriend of two years, Jonah, whom
I love dearly, isnt good at it. But he says he
wants to learn so we can dance together.
Were going dancing this weekend and,
truthfully, I dont want to go with him. When
I asked him if it would be OK if I danced with
some other dancer friends as well as with
him, he said he was insulted and hurt by the
question, and it would make him too jealous.
I explained that I want to help him learn when
we take lessons, but in the meantime, I want
to dance freely.
I have ignored this issue for two years
because I knew it would lead to a conflict.
Should I suppress my love of dancing until
Jonah is at my level or follow my heart and
dance my socks off? -- BALLROOM BETSY
DEAR BALLROOM BETSY: How is
Jonah doing with those dancing lessons? Has
he even started? What if it turns out he has
two left feet?
That he cant stand the idea of you dancing
some of the dances with anyone else is a sign
of insecurity. Are you willing to give up swing
dancing to please him? If the answer is no, it
may be time to change partners.

and her children live with me. Id like to be

able to invite John over to our house, but my
daughter doesnt want strange men around
her kids, which I understand. I tried suggesting
that she meet John before assuming that he
is a strange man, but shes hesitant about
meeting him.
Abby, Id like to be able to spend some
nights at home with him instead of always
going out. It hurts because I have allowed
the father of her children to live with us, yet
I cant have someone I care about visit me at
the home I work hard to pay for.
Please, Abby. I need advice on how to
make my relationship with him and her work.
-- STRESSED IN THE MIDWEST
DEAR STRESSED: I wish I had more
information about your daughter and her
attitude. Did she disapprove of your divorce
from her father and harbor hopes that you will
reconcile? Could she be worried that if you
and John become serious, she will have to
find another place to live? That shed refuse
to even meet him seems peculiar.
It was generous of you to allow her
childrens father to live under your roof.
(Has he left yet?) Notice that I said under
YOUR roof. If you want to entertain a guest,
as the person who pays the mortgage, that
should be your privilege. If that makes her
uncomfortable, perhaps it would be better
if she took the children to their fathers or
another relatives place for the evening.
You are entitled to live your life without
your daughter controlling you, but it appears

many other subjects with your newspaper. Youll also find entertaining features, like cartoons, columns, puzzles,
reviews, and lots more.

It is up to you to decide
how to spend your time this
year. Pleasing others is a good
thing, but neglecting your own
needs will cause resentment
and frustration. Choose a path
that will help you balance
responsibilities and aspirations.

SAGITTARIUS
(Nov.
23-Dec. 21) -- You will be
impatient, but that doesnt
mean you should gossip or
make someone look bad. Bide
your time and wait for the
outcome to unfold naturally.

For Better or Worse

CAPRICORN
(Dec.
22-Jan. 19) -- Making solid
investments before the end of
the year will help increase your
finances. Do your best to show
someone how much you care.
The results will be fulfilling.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20Feb. 19) -- Positive results are
imminent if you keep your
promises. Think before you
speak, or you may inadvertently
cause
embarrassment
to
someone who looks up to you.

HAVANA (AP) When convicted spy Rolando Sarraff

Trujillo failed to call home from prison, his parents went to the
jail to see if their son had fallen ill. Officials told the elderly
couple not to worry, saying only that he was better off.
A former intelligence official in the United States on
Thursday publicly identified their son as the unnamed spy
traded for three Cuban intelligence agents jailed in the United
States, one who U.S. President Barack Obama hailed as one of
Washingtons most valuable assets.
But neither Cuban nor American officials have confirmed
that Sarraff was spirited off the island and his parents have not
heard from their son since he supposedly was freed.
They are saying his name out there, his mother, Odesa
Trujillo, told The Associated Press on Thursday at her home
in Havana. I dont care where he is, just that hes in good
health.
Chris Simmons, the former chief of a Cuban counterintelligence unit for the U.S Defense Intelligence Agency, identified
Sarraff as a cryptologist in Cubas Directorate of Intelligence
working on agent communications, the codes used by Cuban
spies abroad to communicate with their handlers in Havana.
When youve got someone doing agent communications,
they hold the keys to the kingdom, because they are gonna
know where are the flaws in your processes, Simmons told
AP.
Before his downfall, Sarraff helped the U.S. crack the
Wasp Network, in Florida, a Cuban spy ring that included
members of the Cuban Five, the last three of whom were
released in exchange for the Cuban spy. Cuba also released 53
other prisoners as well as American Alan Gross.
The Cuban Five were convicted in 2001 of being unregistered foreign agents, and three also were found guilty of espionage conspiracy for failed efforts to obtain military secrets
from the U.S. Southern Command headquarters.
Sarraffs parents say they know nothing about that.

their local pantries and

There are many items
that are not always available from WOFB that our
partner agencies need. We
try to provide the necessities; however, we are not a
grocery store and are only
able to distribute what we
receive as a donation,
Harner said. When items
arent available for our
agencies, they have to go
to retail outlets and pay a
much higher cost.
Harner suggested persons or organizations that
are interested in holding
a food drive or donating
to a particular program
should contact the program
directly and ask them of
their needs. A full listing of
WOFBs partner agencies
can be found on its website:
wofb.org.
And of course, another need that WOFB has,
along with its partner
agencies, is volunteers,
Harner concluded. Many
of our partner agencies are
operated with only volunteers and many of them
are of an older generation.
Volunteers are crucial to the
support of the operation of
not only WOFB, but of our
partner agencies.
Food drives, volunteer
efforts and special holiday
meals are in abundance
this time of year. Despite
these efforts, two million
Ohioans, more than one
in six, continue to struggle with hunger on a daily
basis.
