At the beginning of each year we start with some idea of the things that we
would like to see, experience or accomplish in our lives so that at the
conclusion of that year we can look back and see the expected satisfying
outcome. The trouble with New Years Resolutions is that they are almost
always focused on one thing that centers on something in our life that we
believe we can control. It is in this that we hope to make a change with positive
results that we can look back on and hopefully agree with at the end of the
year.
I did a search on the internet about the effectiveness of a New Years Resolution and was quickly confronted
with a bunch of articles and advice on how to Stick to it when it comes to keeping these best laid plans for the
New Year. There were pages and pages of offerings to become more effective, but not a lot of good solid data
that shows that a New Years Resolution has a positive effect on ones life. In fact, two things were quite evident.
The first, making and keeping a resolution is fraught with difficulty right out of the gate because as humans we
are proven to have default behaviors that are hard to overcome without constant attention and hard work. The
second, we are easily distracted and have a tendency to lose effectiveness because we do not tie our resolutions
effectiveness to a social activity. In other words, we go it alone and work really hard for a little while and then
give into social pressures around us and forget what we had set out to do.
Ill be honest. Its December 20th as I sit here and write to all of you. I have pondered just what it was that I
committed to change a year ago and I cant remember. Odds are you probably dont either or would rather not
remember. What I do recall is all the things that popped up over the past year that challenged me to step up to
assist another, or to step back while another shared something that I had to give better attention to. I remember
seeing many opportunities for us as a church to reach out and connect with our neighbors and friends and
thinking what could we do to build stronger relationships with them and our church family. I remember a church
full of children for our VBS this past summer and Ms. Betty Doyle and Allan Bean as they got into a water balloon
fight on the sidelines. I think youll find a picture of that later in this newsletter.
C.S. Lewis spent a good deal of his lifetime as a person who did not believe in God because of something that
happened to him as a youth. The important thing is that he had good friends who believed in Christ. He did
eventually find Christ. It was in his experience that he realized that the only way he or anyone else could change
something they first had to turn to him and believe. We too have the power to change. We dont have to rely on
the world to give us the advice that we need to succeed or change. We have been given the power and authority
by Christ to do whatever needs to be done in his name. We are reminded that we are not alone in this. As Christ
reminded his disciples, Whenever two or three of you are gathered in my name, there I will be also. So, our
success does not come from just our effort, but through Christ at work in our lives. We dont have to wait for New
Years Day for a resolution. Every day is New Years Day in Christ! See you at church! Pastor John

Mrs. Betty always had a question, or three, for me every time we met - at church every week
or anywhere. And she always sounded like I had really done something great in knowing
answers...and made me feel good that I had done such a good job explaining the answer.
She had to be such an amazing teacher. She also gave me something I will treasure forever
when she told me how I was so like my mother...no one had ever said that to me nor had I
ever thought I did in any manner...because I had said, like my mother had said to her, what
is the point of knowing something if you don't share it when someone asks. I truly miss Mrs.
Betty and her insatiable, enthusiastic quest for knowledge and joie de vivre. Allan Bean

Yes, she was. No one like her.
She will certainly be missed.
