MCE 286-Engineering Materials and Manufacturing Processes Laboratory

NAMELAB 1: INTRODUCTION AND METROLOGY 1

OBJECTIVE:
To become familiar with the lab facilities; to know the lab safety rules, and to become familiar with the use of
common engineering metrology instruments.

EQUIPMENTS:
Inch micrometer, vernier calipers, dials calipers, steel rule, and micrometer depth gage.
PROCEDURE:
The outside micrometer is a delicate, precision, measuring instrument, and needs to be handled with care. Make
sure the measuring faces are clean of any oil or particles. Use a clean piece of lint free cloth to wipe both faces;
and also the item youre going to measure. Inch micrometers give readings measured in units of thousandth
of an Inch. To hold the micrometer correctly, use one hand to hold slab, and the other hand to hold the sleeve
and thimble. Micrometers have a locking mechanism, to prevent movement in the spindle when you take it
away from the item youre measuring. Lock the slab between anvil and thimble for intermediate thickness
measurement. Examine the scale on the sleeve and the thimble. Add the sleeve and thimble readings.
The dial calipers measures outside features, inside features, and depths. Make sure the measuring faces are
clean of any oil or particles. Use a clean piece of lint free cloth to wipe both faces; and also the item youre
going to measure. For measuring intermediate thickness hold slab and adjust jaws of calipers via adjusting
screw. Examine dial for measurement. For measuring hole diameter adjust upper jaws with the help of
adjusting screw. Examine dial for measurement for diameter of hole. Same procedure for width and length
measurement foe a slab.
The micrometer depth gage is used to measure of depths using reference plane. Place gage vertical and enlarge
the leg of micrometer into the depth until its reach to end. Lock the screw and examine measurement of depth
from sleeve and thimble.

Measuring outer parameters such Measuring depth, thickness, inner
as thickness
and outer diameter, width, length.
For some specific measurements must use specific instruments for better results.
Some instruments work better than others for some measurements. For example, measuring intermediate
thickness of a slab, it is better to use micrometer rather than micrometer depth gage.
The three readings of Intermediate thickness are not same because of the errors. There are two types of errors
1) human error and 2) calibration error.
CONCLUTION:
For accurate and precise measurement use micromere or dial gage. By end of this experiment one can learn
about lab facilities, lab safety rules, and common metrology instruments.
