The trilogy of certainty, simpleness and painlessness, overwhelmingly popular with people, and
can be named as the king of suicide.
It sounds like a rootless assertion, yet there is indeed no other way that can be so peaceful, so
reliable and so simple when committing suicide. Therefore theres no need wasting consideration
on any other methods.
It is a bit hard to believe, but there is no other way superior to hanging, according to thorough
investigations. The following part will present in detail the reason of its superiority. Hanging can
be almost considered as the work of art; therefore, it is applied in almost half of the suicide cases
in Japan every year, and is welcomed in all ages.
The biggest advantage of hanging is the low rate of suicidal attempt. As long as the rope wont
break, or the branch on which the rope attached to wont snap, there can be a 100 percent
success rate guaranteed. It is said that there is someone, who survived the hara-kiri after taking
the medicine, missed all the trams on the railway, and even escaped the death of jumping of the
cliffs, then eventually died hanging on the tree on the cliff.
For those who attempt to suicide, hang yourself when intend to suicide should be remembered
by heart.
[Preparation] Will be so simple that only a rope is needed.
All you will need is a rope.
No matter electric wire, or belt or rope, as long as you can wind it around your neck, which would
be sufficient. However, a softer texture as well as a better fit with the neck is suggested. Such as
plastic tape used in packing at department store, could be enough for someone weights more
than 100 kg.
But if anything with shearing strength such as steel wire is used, it would be very likely to cut off
the head. There is someone tying to the bridge railings a steel wire of vehicle hitching and its
other end to his neck, and then jumped into the river. As a result his head was cut off into the
water, and turned the incident into a controversial strange death event. There is also another
valiant clerk who tied such a vehicle hitching steel wire to the tree and the other end to his neck
then started the car to cut off his head.
You can even kill yourself sitting in this way.
The rope can be attached to anywhere as long as not a fragile twig. There is also example that
middle school boy in grade one hanging himself on a spike nailed into the bookshelf. But it is not
uncommon to find nowhere to tie the rope, especially in hospitals or detention houses. However,

it doesnt have to be a place higher than the body length to tie the rope. One can still die with his
feet or bottom on floor. Many cases refer to people hanging on the sickbed, which is theoretically
possible.
Before further elaborate on this theory, we have to confirm the difference of hanging and
strangulation. The former involves mostly the suffocation of clogged airway, while the latter
causes mainly death of cerebral anoxia with the block of blood to the brain.
There are two types of arteries that carry blood to the brain, carotid artery and vertebral artery,
which is beside the spine and protected by bones. Strangulation will block up the carotid artery
but not the vertebral artery under the protection of bones, whereas hanging, creating an angle
when the neck hanged up aslant, blocks arteries from both way, and cut off the blood to brain
immediately. The differences in the two ways above can be seen from the cadaver. Cadaver of the
strangulation has continuous blood supply to the brain through vertebral artery but the carotid
artery clogged, and would turn to purple with extravasated blood, which is lack in the cadaver of
hanging.
After the briefing of basic information, here comes to the problem of the height of hanging.
When hanging, a person with blood pressure of 170 mmHg, it needs 3.5 kg for his carotid artery
and 16.6 kg for vertebral artery to be blocked. And if with the feet on floor and knees bending,
70-90 percent of the body weight is pressing on the neck (there will still be 20 percent of the
weight if the knees are on floor). For example, a person weights 60 kg hangs with knees on floor,
his neck is pressed with 12 kg of weight, which would naturally block the carotid artery.
Meanwhile, however, the vertebral artery is not completely blocked and there is still a small
amount of blood to the brain, yet the death would be just a matter of time, which is far better
than pure strangulation. It might take a bit longer to black out, but will never end in failure. This
means that even with only 20 percent pressing on the neck, as long as it creates an angle, one
can die easily without hanging completely hanging the body off the ground.
In fact there is even example of hanging with bottom and back on the floor. And some says that
only 30 cm needed for a sure death. In western countries people even say that most of the cases
are with feet on ground. So if you intend to die in your room, there is no need to give up for the
height problem. The door knob will be more than enough, and the bevel of stairs is also feasible.
Another thing that needs to caution would be, find a secret place, yet not necessary to be so
secret that cannot be found in hours or days, such as when suicide with gas or medicine. Only ten
more minutes privacy will be enough to guarantee a death, the longer the better.
If you dont want your body to be found by relatives or friends, youd better take a detour from
the daily commuting route, so when the identity of the body is confirmed, and parents informed,
you would have already been placed in the hospital or the police station.
[Process] Lost consciousness in a flash, giving rise to no pain.
How will you feel when your head is in the noose, kick off the chair and dangle in the air?
According to the research of legal medical experts, one gets dazed immediately after hanging and
limbs are impossible to move again, during which no pain is aroused at all. It is a common sense

in the medical field.

In Tokyo, some actor performed suicide for audiences, and the moment he said Arch your waist
like this he lost his consciousness and died in front of everybody. Some medicolegist wanted to
feel the pain of hanging personally, so he placed the chair within easy reach and asked for the
presence of colleagues. He lost consciousness as soon as his feet got off the chair; luckily his
colleagues rescued him in time. There are still numerous other cases of attempt like this.
According to a suicide attempter who was rescued from hanging with electric wire, Just all of a
sudden you would know nothing and feel nothing, not even feel the difficulty to breath or any
pain.
Not only just about the pain, it but also involve certain comfort, so to say. Such as, a pleasant
coma under the shime-waza in judo, or teenagers die of strangling neck with towel in bathroom.
Whats more, if hang with a sudden overexertion, it would cause the dislocation of neck, which
leads to the immediate stop of breath and heartbeat.
Many people would think it is at the choke of throat and die painfully in pain at the mention of
hanging. But the truth is that the brain hypoxia would have already numbed the consciousness
before the dyspnea, so no pain will be caused.
If there is still further doubt of this statement, one can personally try hanging in a noose to see if
it is true to black out at that moment. But this might stop at once when one feels the excessive
nervousness when sticking head into the noose and with a bit pressure of the body weight.
The heartbeat will stop after ten minutes or so.
Some scholars conduct in depth research by further dividing it into several phases.
Begin with the first phase. At first will be the dizziness and heat up in head, and then followed by
the tinnitus. Later there will be flash before eyes. The heat, tinnitus and flash appear at the same
time at the moment of hanging, and meanwhile, the sense will start to blur.
After the loss of consciousness there comes the second phase, the spasm all over the body. It is
said that the hands will start arm pulling and feet walking, and then muscles of limbs will start
cramping, later the whole body straights up cramping. This kind of cramp is now deemed to be
minor convulsion all over the body. This phase will last 60 to 90 seconds. Whats intriguing is that
male will have an erection and ejaculation at this moment.
The third phase will be the thanatosis. There will be outflow of excrement, urine and semen. The
eyeballs will bump out and breathe stop. This will last about 1 minute, and it will take three to
three and a half minutes to reach this stage. During this phase the heart will still be beating, so if
founded the actor can still be rescued. Then the heartbeat will last around 10 minutes, once it
stops, there will be no cure.
An American acrobat imitating hanging for the audiences usually would send the signal to
assistance at once when feeling started to blur. Yet one day the black-out might be too sudden
that he failed to send any signals and were hanged there for thirteen minutes, completely wiped
out the last hope of survive when later sent to hospital.

All these mean that, within some ten minutes you can succeed suicide if not found by other
during the period, and painless. No any other ways of suicide can ever surpass it.
[Body condition] The body of hanging is said to be filthy?
People always speak of the indecent body as the shortcoming of hanging. There are indeed
incontinence and ejaculation happening. Some also says that because of the neck strangled
upwards, the tongue will also stick out, the face turn purple due to the congestion, and eyeballs
bump out. Yet only a few cases can be dreadful as such. The eyeballs wont bump out a few days
after the death, and the tongue wont stick out if blocked by the teeth, which means the body
condition wont be worse than that.
View from the pictures of bodies of hanging, most of them just hanging there, no very much
different from alive. As its mentioned above, since the bloody supply to the brain is cut rapidly,
usually there wont be congestion on the face. It might still appear to be a bit scary, but in
comparison with bodies of jumping and car crash, its still decent enough.
In attempt to prevent incontinence, one can go to the bathroom first; for ejaculation, just
masturbate first. An eighty-year-old grandpa, in order to follow the death of Showa emperor and
commit suicide the day of the demise, stuffed gauze in mouth and wore mask when hanged in
the orangery. Maybe he is also in pursuit of a decent body?
[Caution] Strangulation is excruciating.
As it is mentioned above, the advantage of hanging lies in the neck hanged up aslant and
strangling the vertebral artery, which cannot be blocked down when choking the neck with hands.
In such case, one cannot black out instantly with the bloody still carried to brain. Hanging will
erase the consciousness at the first phase whereas strangulation will keep it through all three
phases, then eventually let go, leads to a result of death by suffocation with the clog of airway,

paying my deepest sympathy. Why dont they just take some pains to get a 30 cm height?
A forty-two-year-old university associate professor strangled himself bit by bit with tie, and finally
bled from the mouth and died.
A forty-three-year-old lady living a banal life of housewife after participating in swimming contest
in Tokyo Olympic, with such amazing vital capacity, wrapped thick layers of proof fabric over
mouth, nose and neck and suffocated herself to death.
A forty-nine-year-old housewife in prison for murdering her own son stuffed plenty of paper
towels in stomach and nose and suffocated to death in the detention house.
There is also a forty-six-year-old builder who swallowed about 100 g (a roll of) of paper towel and
died of bronchial occlusion in the care unit of the police station.
For sure, suffocation can also lead to ones death, but with excruciation to such extent that it is
not very much recommended.
One more thing need to be mentioned of hanging is, the brain cell will be damaged by the

cerebral anoxia, so there will be severe cerebral sequela left after an attempted suicide. The brain
cell is different from other cells that cannot regenerate once damaged; hence, it is very necessary
to make careful plan for not being interrupted by others.
[Case study 4] Tragedy of attempted hanging Frank Nagai
In October 1985, the singer Frank Nagai (53 years old) returned to home at around 10 pm after
the show and had a beer with his wife then went to bed at 10:30. At midnight, he left room for a
long time and didnt come back. When his wife came out looking for him, she found him hanging
himself with five neckties on the handrail of the spiral stairs between first and second floor, and it
was around 3 am at that time.
When the ambulance arrived, Nagai had already been in a coma, without breathe and pulse. His
pupils had already dilated when rushed to hospital and he was on the point of the brain death.
Nevertheless, four or five days later, he came to himself miraculously, and started to speak a few
words a month later. He could even recognize the character in the song . Later on
he could write .
After a few more treatment in hospital he could now take some stroll, sing some familiar songs in
karaoke, which showed a further recovery. However, he still couldnt recognize his wife and
friends who have been visiting him, and was in a state similar to Alzheimer, and listed as the
interdicted person in 1989.
He described this experience to his friend Tamba Tetsuro as such, It was hard to breath the
moment I hanged myself up. It all flashed to red before eyes and turned pitch-dark after. You
could see from above your own face twisting, and then hear some strange sound. As the sound
grew louder, it vanished into the tunnel of darkness. You would feel a sudden ascent, then drift
through the wall and door and be able to see whats going on in the Nether. You would also
notice yourself standing on the ground, from the garden ahead float by melodies, and voice of
the deceased friends and families. You would be propelled forward by yearning. A river with
three tributaries lying ahead; however I was dragged back by some unnamed force.
Nagais attempt of suicide is because of anguished by his former lover who claimed her baby is
his and pressed for alimony.
[Review of the case]
This is one of the few sensational cases of attempted hanging. Even for a 100 percent success
rate suicide method like hanging, once get caught by others in the middle of the deed, it will
surely fail.
As for the case stated above, judging from the fact of pulse stop, the actor must have been
hanging for over 10 minutes. Yet some experts think that, (Judging from the degree of recovery)
it has only been 3 to 4 minutes passing since the hanging happened, and the actors feet and
bottom must be on ground. However, even his life can be saved, the damaged cranial nerves are
impossible to recover. Nagais case has made it more than clear what kind of sequela could
happen. The damage of cranial nerve cells starts the moment blood stop its circulation, which
leads to horrible consequences. The attempted hanging is gravely horrible.

The loss of consciousness at that moment (usually horizontal), according to Nagai himself, then
all flash to red before eyes and turn pitch-dark after, with more indescribable feeling in the follow,
all these can be call the near-death experience, which is said to be experienced by many people
who have been close to death.
[Case study 5] Hanging at a height over 91 cm the top executive of United Red Army Mori
Kouo
On January 1st, 1973, Mori Kouo (28 years old at that time) was found hanging in his cell at Tokyo
Detention House. He founded the revolutionary armed group in January 1972, and purposed
through his martial ideology that the revolution can only succeed with armed combat, and
conducted training Gunma ken. He was arrested in February 1972, and confessed to have
murdered 12 Red Army soldiers under the excuse of non-revolutionary actions. He was
transferred to Tokyo Detention house in September, and waited for trial. This lynch that has killed
12 people is a shock Japanese society, and shows even more craziness of a closed group than the
Asama-Sanso incident.
On January 1st the next year, Mori Kouo ate his breakfast and lunch as usual, and was seen
reading on tatami by the guards at 1:38 pm. 14 minutes later, at 1:52 pm, when the guard toured
again his cell, he was found hanging in a 60 cm towel tied to the 91 cm high iron bar.
The doctors were fetched immediately and gave him the cardiotonic and artificial respiration, yet
of no help. He died an hour later. He was said to die with feet tied by clothes at hand, while some
other saying describe his dying position as about to sit down. Analysis to this case is, the
moment he committed suicide, he kicked out his tied feet hard in the air and then the gravity
acted on the towel to strangle his neck.
Although he had already lost consciousness when found, his pulse was no different from alive
and there was no bleeding or incontinence.
Two wills were left by him, in which confessed his mistake of blind worship of martial ideology.
Rumor has it that he cultivated keen interest into Christianity and had been reading Bible a few
months before death.
[Inspection of the cause of death]
Did his bottom touch the ground?
He was tiny man with 163 cm in height, and 54 kg in weight; the towel he used was only 60 cm,
which was quite short. He entangled his neck into the knot on the iron bar, which means his neck
pressed closely to the bar. Coincidentally, he had an excessively long waist, and the towel hauled
his neck tight that his bottom did not touch the ground.
Namely, a 54 kg heavy man hanging with feet on ground and back against wall, cannot be
brought back to consciousness within 14 minutes, which is a strong prove of the simplicity and
effectiveness of hanging.
But, it is still a pity that he has made unremitting endeavor for the cause of revolution and at last

gave up his long-held belief and converted himself to religion, but still cannot avoid such a tragic
fate.
[Case study 6] A woman rescued from hanging in mental hospital
On May 7th 1982, 4:45 pm, in a certain mental hospital, a female patient was caught up in
agitation and screamed Kill me!, then was send to the safe house. 40 minutes later at 5:25 pm,
she climbed up the pane with a few quilts and hanged herself with a towel. When she was
discovered, her breath and heartbeat had already stopped. She was rescued immediately with
artificial respiration and cardiotonic, 5 minutes later she was able to breathe on her own and had
weak pulse.
Even so, she stayed unconscious for two days, and eventually showed responds to stimulations.
She came to herself on the third day, a week later she could take in liquid food. She started
recovery program since the second week and two more weeks later returned to group living with
other patients. Yet she suffered from memory loss and was less active than before, hiding behind
people all the time and relying more on the nurses.
This woman has been living in the institution for 13 years since 26. Before that she had lived in
other mental hospitals for 3 times. She worked in a general hospital nearby after getting out at
1979, and later gave up the job because of some affaires with her colleague, and started
cohabitation with other guy. Before long, she stopped eating and screaming things like Kill me!,
and was sent back to hospital 2 years later. She hanged herself half a year after that, which as her
third attempted suicide.
She had been working in the towel factory for 6 years after graduating from middle school, got
married at 23 and divorced a year after that; had a boy but died early.
Whats more, four of her five sisters have had attempted suicide or the intension to suicide.
[Review of the case]
As the nurses said, This is one of the few cases that dealt in time by medical stuff and bring the
patient back to life, which is one of the rare cases that one still survive even the heartbeat
stopped once. Take out the time of piling up the quilts from the total 40 minutes, the patient was
found 15 minutes after hanging, right when the heart beat stopped.
With 40 minutes in time and enough height but cannot complete the suicide, this case serves as a
striking contrast with that of Mori Kouo. However, with the monitoring in cells and hospitals, it
can always be found out in time, so it would be difficult to commit suicide, especially for hospitals
with complete first-aid equipment.
Judging from the attempted cases, one might think that hanging is not as easy as imagined. But
these are just the rarest case. And viewing from the fact that there are more than 10 thousand
people die of hanging annually, with 100 percent death rate, hanging is still on the top of suicide
methods.

But what will be like for the rest of life of this person? Must be more than unlucky or unfortunate,
and appear to be a living hell for others. Considering the sequela, itd be better not to rescue
her.

If you are tired of work and personal relations, and want to commit suicide secretly without being
found by anyone else, the forest is the best choice. There is no other place so secluded for body,
and easy to enter than the forest.
You will disappear, and then gradually from peoples memory. But in order to achieve this, one
has to study carefully the way of entering the forest. The following map can be used as a
reference.

[History]
There are 30 people each year, not much fluctuation (Fujiyoshida Police Station) committing
suicide in the forest. Other resorts of suicide have already become history, yet the forest is way
more superior to other spots for suicide, which is already proven above.
The forest has always been one of the resorts of suicide itself, but it is because the novel Tower
of Wave by Matsumoto Seicho was adapted into TV series that it suddenly rose to fame and
attracted tens of suicide cases each year.
[A route that body cannot be found]
Usually, once people enter the forest will get lost immediately due to the loss of the sense of
direction; therefore any route is possible for an entrance. But the route we present here is about
how the body will never to be found.
The most common one is entering near Fuketsu. Get off at Fuketsu station of the Fuji express
coach (refer to the transportation column for the course), and the way to the entrance of Fuketsu
is at the south side of National Highway No. 139; go straight up there will be the ticket office of
Fuketsu, but dont enter from there; there are two roads ahead of the ticket office, and take the
Aokigahara shizen houdou on the left.
Go ahead for about 300 meters there will be another crossroad, and take the island on the left
with the sign Ice caveKouyoudai. There will be a board ahead writes There is only one life, do
treasure it, but just ignore it.

Another 300 meters ahead there are landmarks, writing KouyoudaiIce cave on the left and
Mountain pass on the right. On the side of the mountain pass there is a fallen lead board,
writing Life is the precious gift from your parents! Please reconsider your parents, siblings and
children, but ignore it too. One might get a little bit hesitate when reaching here, then you can
decide whether to go back, for the compass is still working. Further ahead there will be Tomioka
Forest-road.
This mountain road is no different from every other one, especially for those with climbing
experiences. But it is all surrounded by dense forest, and one might lost the count of miles due to
the unchanged view, and get lost.
This road is basically leading to the south. With another 15 minutes walk, the road will become
rough, and trees around take on the hint of primeval forest, then continue to walk for another 15
minutes.
Thereafter you can enter the forest from any direction, but better take the right side.
Places for body to never be found
In addition, we introduce here another two places for body to never be found.
The first one is to get off at Entrance of Kouyoudai station of Fuji express coach. There are fire
brigades and the hotel Chinmokukan. Follow the asphalt road for 100 meters and you will see a
dense forest, 1 kilometer further there will be the primeval forest. Follow this road to the
crossway on the left and go as deep inside as possible, then just keep go straight ahead. This area,
not only the local people, even the volunteers of suicide themselves are not very much willing to
come. The local people refer to the crossway as the most difficult place for a body to be found.
The other one is to get off at Akaike station of Fuji express coach, enter the mountain pass
through the asphalt road and go 1 to 2 kilometers further to the crossway on the right side,
where no matter local people or tourists will not be able to find the body.
These two ways all require rather long walk, but entering from Fuketsu is more reliable to conceal
the body. However, since tourists rarely visit such a site, one should be more than careful to not
arouse others suspicion when making an entrance.
Another 100 meters ahead and there is no turning back
In the primeval forest, every inch of ground is covered with twisted roots and gnarled branches,
also moss and fallen leaves over pits, which make it impossible for one to go straight forward.
One will completely lost the direction after walking for over 100 meters, even so confident with
the route at the beginning. Throw away the compass if carrying one with, for it is impossible to
go back anyway.
It is most suitable to adopt hanging, with a considerable high death rate, in such a forest, all that
needed is only one rope. Nevertheless trees here are all very tall so it will be difficult to find a
suitable one. In order to find the right tree, one might have to go deeper inside, which makes it
even more difficult for people to discover, therefore one can disappear eternally from peoples
memory.

[Notice]
The body can still be discovered during the Big Search
Every October, the local fire brigades and policemen, over 600 people in all, will conduct Big
Search for bodies in Z pass (shown in picture 1). Namely, if one commits suicide in between the
National Highway and south side of Saiko, his body will still be found. It will be the same even if
you die off the National Highway but within 500 meters from the shizen houdou. Of all the bodies
discovered by Big Search in recent years, three are from 1989 (one is female), none from 1990,
five from 1991 (two are female), and there was no search in 1992 since there was murder case
near Fuketsu at that time. All in all, never enter this zone.
By the way, if the family entrusts the authorities for a search, it will be 10,000 Yen for one staff
per day, which means it will cause 1 million yen for 50 staff to search for 2 days.
Watch out for Self-Defense Force!
Every march, the Self-Defense Force will conduct walk training in a line in the wood, near the
entrance of Fuketsu to Kantoku Dojo. It is said that most bodies missed in the Big Search are
found at this time, hence, from south Fuketsu to Kantoku Dojo is also not a desirable choice.
Dont get suspected by the local people
People live there for a long time will tell the suicides at a glance. It is believed that their traits are
carrying only a small bag and take no photos. But mostly they just see through by intuition. When
you try to walk into the forest, local people will greet you saying, Do you know what kind of
place this is? and try to remonstrate with you. Even though you tell them, Just let me die, they
wont buy it. After 40 minutes persuasion, some will be talked back and give up. Therefore, try to
avoid such atmosphere at the very beginning. And it will be nonsense to pretend to be cheerful
before death. So just enter the forest without hesitation or procrastination, stride in and local
people will not follow up with suspicion, in that even for local people, its hard to find the way
back after 100 meters walk.
Dont underestimate the monks
It is said that there is a mysterious monk living at Kantoku Dojo. His house is quite common, but
people always see him drive to shopping away from the mountain roads. Even the local people
cant figure out what he does for living. Since one would better not underestimate such a person,
it would be wise to detour from this area.
[TransportationAccommodation]
It takes only 2 hours from Mishima station of JR to Fujiyoshida by Fuji coach. It takes 30 minutes
and 40 minutes respectively to entrance of Kouyoudai and Fuketsu. There will be a coach every
other hour, but the number will be cut down in winter.
Of course there is no need for accommodation, but just in case. There are lots of guesthouses at
south side of Saiko, open throughout the year, which is the most convenient. It is one hour bus
ride to Fuketsu station. At the entrance of the mountain pass there is Chinmokukan available.

[Case study 7]
At November, 1983, a 31-year-old male employer, after wandering 16 days in the forest, got
under the protection of the police.
He left his home in Yokohama at late September for troubles of the company and himself. He
roamed about in car at his hometown Aichi-ken and the northeast region for a month then
decided to suicide. He sent his will back to families and entered the forest from Kouyoudai in
Narusawa at October 26th.
He looked around for a suitable place to die at the first week, and sometimes ran into someone
coming to pick mushrooms the moment he wanted to hang. His willingness to die began to fade
when he could not die immediately. Therefore, he went back to the National Highway sometimes
to buy some breads, sometimes ate at the parking lot, then back to the forest again, living a life
like a tramp. Eventually, he couldnt keep out the cold and rain, and called his family at a
guesthouse by Saiko at November 10th.
Under the entrustment of his family, the local police and fire brigade conducted a three-day
search with 150 and more staff. And the guy actually knew about the search itself.
When he was under protection, he said, I never want to suicide again.
[Review of the Situation]
Even reenter the primeval forest of death with no turning back, with the wrong route, the
consequence will still be the same. This man probably moved around Kouyoudai and Ryukun Ana
