Auburn, WA
2012

Tracey Robbins, a yoga instructor and 2012

graduate of the ACHS Associate of Applied
Science in Complementary Alternative Medicine
(AAS) and Diploma in Holistic Health Practice
(HHP) programs, began her accredited
holistic health education eager to become
knowledgeable about evaluating and purchasing
high-quality skin and body products, she says. Robbins now owns and
operates Traditions Wellness, a wellness center in Auburn, Washington,
where she offers her own skin care line, yoga, massage, aromatherapy,
wellness consulting, and herbal teas and tinctures to help the local
community.
We selected Tracey for this recognition due to her dedication to her
academics at ACHS and the positive impact her practice has had on the
holistic health community, says ACHS President Dorene Petersen.
It is inspiring to see Tracey apply her complementary alternative
medicine knowledge to helping others on the journey to healthy living,
says Petersen.
Tracey loves to learn! Her curiosity and thoughtful insights motivate
others to participate and explore, adds ACHS faculty member Barbara
Tai Lovelace.
Each year ACHS chooses a graduate to represent the College in the
DETC Annual Outstanding Graduate program. Selection criteria includes
review of the graduates academic record as well as the level and quality
of their contribution to society and to their chosen profession.

deep commitment to the student experience.

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN AROMATHERAPY

The mission of the MS in Aromatherapy degree program is to develop a practical

and theoretical understanding of clinical aromatherapy and professionally apply this
knowledge to educate clients and consumers about a mind-body-spirit approach to
health and wellness.
The use of aromatherapy as a viable integrative holistic health modality in hospitals and
in many aspects of the wellness industry has shown a progressive upward trend for a
number of years. Non-profit organizations such as Planetree Hospitals Inc. are a group
of US hospitals who are aware that the way a patient feels has an enormous impact on
the speed and success of recovery. Planetree hospitals have adopted the holistic patient
care model, which integrates complimentary therapies with conventional medical
treatment on mental, emotional, spiritual, social and physical levels and aromatherapy
is a large part of this model.1

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN COMPLEMENTARY

ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE

Consumer use of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) continues

to increase, fueled by a number of factors, including increasing research of efficacy,
dissatisfaction with allopathic models (particularly for chronic health problems), and
an aging population.
The challenge to the industry will be to integrate CAM to most benefit the consumer,
focusing on the complementary rather than the alternative nature of the wide variety
of modalities available and leading the way forward to a wellness based concept of
healthcare.
Those who would play a part in leading the industry to successful integration must be
able to facilitate change in a holistic and encompassing manner in the context of rapid
change in the health care industry.

I have truly enjoyed

my experience thus far.
I feel like I can connect
and communicate with
the staff freely. This is
my first time with any

I feel that ACHS has

so much.

RECIPES

Many herbs can be easily prepared as teas.

Basic Recipe
1-t herb

1-cup purified or filtered water

Directions
Place your herbs into a ceramic or glass teapot.
Bring the water to a boil. Do not use an aluminum pot.
Turn off the heat and pour the water over the herb.
Cover the pot and let steep for 5 to 10 minutes.
Strain the tea in a non-aluminum strainer and then drink.
Use immediately: Do not store.
Honey, lemon, or milk can be added, although milk tends to mask the
delicate flavors. Do not use honey with infants under one year as there have
been reports of botulism spores in honey and this can be fatal in infants.
Keep all herbal preparations out of the reach of children. Check herb contraindications before
preparing herbs as teas or infusions.

Clinical herbalism consulting along with health and wellness coaching has become
one of the fastest growing areas of healthcare. Clinical herbalists play an integral role in
the health and wellness industry. Recent research supports the use of herbal protocols
for a number of clients including use for pain management for military service-related
chronic pain1, allergy management2, a holistic approach to anxiety and depression
related to PTSD3, prehypertension4, and integration at wellness clinics and as part of
employee wellness programs.5

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN HOLISTIC NUTRITION

The mission of the MS in Holistic Nutrition degree program is to provide professional

holistic nutrition and physical health recommendations from which community
programming and client education can be based. This in turn will help people to live
healthier lives, prevent illness or injury, and reduce the risk of chronic disease while
promoting wellness.

In a recent survey* of
adults age 50+, two out
of three reported using
some form of complementary and alternative
medicine (CAM), yet only
one in three discussed
it with their healthcare
providers.

Holistic nutrition is the foundation to any holistic health lifestyle plan for optimal
health. The United States healthcare system has shifted its emphasis to prevention
in an effort to reduce healthcare costs and service a society that is both growing and
living longer. With the passing of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) in late 2010 by the
US Government there is even more focus on prevention and wellness. The National
Prevention Strategy (NPS) was released June 16, 2011, as part of the ACA. The NPS
launched a comprehensive plan that will help increase the number of Americans who
are healthy at every stage of life. Nutrition and healthy eating are one of the seven
primary priorities outlined in the detailed NPS strategy.1

view international student admissions information online at https://www.achs.edu/
international-admissions-achs.
Applications for admission are accepted throughout the year, however, cohorts and
courses have a set start date. Undergraduate and Graduate cohorts start three times
per year: Fall (September), Spring (January), and Summer (May). Select accelerated
100-level undergraduate courses are also offered in March, July, and September.
Contact Admissions for registration deadlines.
Class sizes are limited and most fill months in advance of the start date. Your first
payment must be paid once your application is accepted to secure your place in class.
All applicants are evaluated on the basis of motivation and academic ability to benefit.
Applicants are evaluated without regard to age, sex, race, national or ethnic origin,
religion, sexual orientation, or general disability.
Non-Discrimination Policy

ACHS does not discriminate with regard to race, ethnicity, religion or sect, color,
national origin, age, sex, sexual orientation, disability status, veteran status, or political
affiliation in its acceptance of students.

Professional Graduate Profile

LORA CANTELE, RA, CMAIA, CSRT
Lora is a Clinical Aromatherapist, Swiss Reflex Therapist/
Instructor, aromatherapy educator, consultant, writer/publisher.
As a clinical aromatherapist, Lora worked in both private
practice and in pediatric hospice and palliative care. She was part
of a team that developed a pilot program that included the use of
aromatherapy for children with life-limiting illnesses, a favored
topic as an international speaker as she hopes to inspire others to
replicate this successful program. A former tutor for the Penny Price Academy (UK),
she had a satellite school in Chicago. She continues to teach Swiss Reflex Therapy for
Shirley Price in Boulder, CO.
As a former president of the Alliance of International Aromatherapists, Lora worked
to improve the standards of aromatherapy education and foster aromatherapy
education through the programming of international conferences and cooperative
alliances with other aromatherapy organizations around the world. Her work to
provide the professional holistic practitioner with useful information and resources
to enhance their practice and expand their toolbox is evidenced by her continued
support of aromatherapy education through The International Journal of Professional
Holistic Aromatherapy (IJPHA) in which she is the editor and publisher.
