About The Department of Atomic Energy, Government Of India

The Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) came into being on August 3, 1954 under the direct charge of the Prime Minister
through a Presidential Order. According to the Resolution constituting the AEC, the Secretary to the Government of India
in the Department of Atomic Energy is ex-officio Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission.
DAE has been engaged in the development of nuclear power technology, applications of radiation technologies in the
fields of agriculture, medicine, industry and basic research.
DAE comprises five research centers, three industrial organizations, five public sector undertakings and three service organizations. It has under its aegis two boards for promoting and funding extra-mural research in nuclear and allied fields,
mathematics and a national institute (deemed university).
It also supports eight institutes of international repute engaged in research in basic sciences, astronomy, astrophysics,
cancer research and education.

About the GTU Research and Consultancy Services Cell (RCSC)

Gujarat Technological University is the largest State Government University with more than 4,50,000 students including
international students and 17,000 faculties spread over in more than 450 colleges in Gujarat in disciplines of Engineering,
Architecture & Planning, Pharmacy, Management, Computer Application and Hotel Management & Catering Technology.
For this workshop, Research and Consultancy Services Cell (RCSC) of Gujarat Technological University (GTU) is the
Knowledge Partner.
With an objective of interaction between practitioners from business/industry and GTU academicians to synergies in
practice & theory for the benefit of society, GTU and business/industry/Government organization; RCSC is setup at GTU.
GTU has a wealth of academic knowledge like a gold mine. Gujarat Technological University (GTU) has a large number of
highly qualified faculty members in different fields of technology and management. RCSC strives to dig the knowledge and
harness it to bring out products and services beneficial to business, industry, public bodies and society at large. Hence
GTU can provide consultancy services to large and complex consultancy projects for industries and business as well as for
government organizations.
Teaching is essentially a distribution of existing knowledge to society. However all leading American Universities as well as
Indian IITs and IIMs place emphasis on research and consultancy of academics so as to produce expertise and experience
which can be beneficial to students. A proper balance between teaching and research consultancy would augment well
the level of the University.

Solid waste treatment developed by the Bhabha Atomic Research

Bridging the GAP between research and practical application

Water supply and sanitation have emerged as one of the most underperforming sectors in the country. The demand for clean water and sanitation can be evident from the investments from JnNURM, where 38% of
funds are dedicated to water supply and 26% of funds to sewerage. These
are also one of the most crucial to the citizens well being since their inadequacy affects the health as well as economic productivity equally.
Through JnNURM and other multi lateral funding agencies, some Indian
cities are also experimenting with foreign technologies of waste management. However they have proved not only very expensive to be replicat-

ed and up scaled, but also often are cumbersome to operate, retrofit and
manage in the Indian circumstances. The need for indigenous technologies tailored to India is often felt by the city managers.
