Subject: Cheresources Q & A TSWEET vs Hysys

07/23/2007 05:24 PM

Pls find herewith Q & A from cheresources.com site for your reference.
Hello,
We have to simulate a typical gas sweetening process with the removal of H2S from Natural gas by MDEA
and regeneration. The H2S removal is from 500 ppm vol to 5 ppm.
Is there a way of simulating the process in HYSYS without 'Amine package license' and still get reasonably
accurate results? I belive Amine package is the best option. What shall be the next best?
One of the fluid package models I used gave some weird results like more H2S in outlet natural gas than
in the inlet stream.
Thanks
Benoy
Benoy:
If you or your company are real serious about an amine design - especially an MDEA system - then I
would seriously refuse to use HySys and get a design package that not only works correctly, but is put
together and serviced by people who are specific experts in Acid Gas Removal systems - like BR&E. Go
to:
http://www.bre.com/
and find out about their credentials and background in acid gas removal - specifically in MDEA and Mixed
Amines. In my opinion BR&E has forgotten more about Amine systems than HySys can learn. The facts
are that HySys doesn't have the plant/process/equipment hands-on personnel. BR&E has. What I mean
by hands-on is the ability to operate the process - not to write hard computer code about how you THINK
the process should work. Most or all of the experts in the field have run TSweet at one time or other.
None that I know have failed in simulating an Acid Gas Removal system or plant using TSweet.
I'm not one to tout or sell any process or program on this Forum, but when I recommend anything I am
forced to go with proven results and individuals who do the job for a living and have to account for the
results. The many papers BR&E offers on case studies involving CO2 and H2S removal tell you about
actual engineering field applications and results. You can always inquire with the end users and with plant
owners for opinions and comments. I'm not being critical of HySys, but a lot of people have reported bad
results from their Gas Sweetening programs/routines. Your experience just goes on top of the pile
together with others.

I fully agree. The software from BR&E is nowadays called ProMax, which integrates Tsweet and Prosim.
The people at BR&E are very helpful, and if you don't want to buy their software, you can ask them to
evaluate your system based on consultancy fee.

Thank you Art and Joerd. I shall be recommending the same to our company.
