The objective of this course is to provide a theoretical understanding for practical application of Management
Principles and Practices and lay a credit bearing foundation for further studies within the Faculty of Business.

Project Management - An Introduction - NQF Level 4
Course Objectives
This short course will focus on a structured and logical approach to assist you to become acquainted with the
requirements to manage a variety of different projects. The content of this course will provide an formal
introduction to project management as an important contempory business and management function.
Course goal
Many projects are not completed within time and budget and rarely do they deliver the prescribed quality. The
goal of this course is to provide managers of projects with the introduction of the most important functions
required to manage and complete projects within budget and time constraints.
Prescribed book
Burke, Rory, 2007 - Introduction to Project Management (This is included in the overall course fee and will be
provided to registered students)
Assessment and certification
Continuous evaluation based on class tests, group assignments and case studies with one individual project
management assignment to be submitted towards the end of the course. A certificate in Project Management will
be awarded to successful participants who achieve an average pass rate of 50%.
The focus of this course will be on applying the principles of project management to case studies and scenarios.
The student will be expected to acquire much of the theory as self-study with the lectures being a summary of
the key learnings. Practical work will be done during the lecture sessions as well as specified homework /
preparation for the lecture.

Project Management 1 - NQF Level 5
Course Objectives
Project management is a carefully planned and organised effort to accomplish a specific (and usually) one-time
efforts, for example, construct a building.
Project management includes developing a project plan, which includes defining project goals and objectives,
specifying tasks or how goals will be achieved, what resources are need, and associating budgets and timelines
for completion. It also includes implementing the project plan, along with careful controls to stay on the
\\\"critical path\\\", that is, to ensure the plan is being managed according to plan.
Project management usually follows major phases (with various titles for these phases); including feasibility
study, project planning, implementation, evaluation and support/maintenance.
Who should attend
New project managers or persons who wish to make a career of managing projects.

During the course week delegates complete practical project assignments. Towards the end of the course

Continuous evaluation based on assignments and group case studies, including a final project assignment.
A CPUT Certificate in Project Management will be awarded to successful participants.
