COWI offers services within Independent

consultant, advising consultancy, ECPM
responsibility.
...or as a combination of the above.

First, create a team together with the client organisation,

agree on a common target of the project, involve the client
organisation in issues of safety and maintenance and keep
focus on cost, no gold plating.

With long term experience from the gas and oil sector,
COWI has become the leading company in providing
studies, engineering and execution of industrial plants.

Start up every meeting with Is everyone comfortable with

our progress?, walk around the table and they will give you
a good picture of status of the project.

COWI is an independent technology provider using own

knowledge or a license design. We have multidisciplinary
competence and can handle the project from prestudies
through design and construction to commissioning.

We handle Licensors by visiting them at their home office this gives them a picture of importance of participation of the
project. After start up of the project, keep good and friendly
contact with them and they will do their part.

COWI has 60 years of experience of performing small and

big size projects. We are convinced that we have found the
best way of working together with our clients.

We keep focus on scope, cost and safety. We also focus on

communication within the project organisation.
We encourage the team to constantly look over the fence
What can I do to assist other project team members in
order to make good progress?
This is our way of handling successful project execution.

Information - COWI method of working

Pre/idea study

Basic design study

The aim of the pre/idea study is to investigate raw materials and product infrastructure, availability and economics.
To be able to judge production cost a first cost estimate
needs to be made. This cost estimate is based on:

The aim of a basic design study is to produce decision

material for the total investment of the project.
The main parts of the material are:

Investigation of available process technologies

Block diagram for the process and auxiliary systems
Plot selection

An important lesson is to not underestimate the need of

utility and space required for equipment.

Feasibility study
The aim of a feasibility study is to ensure technical and
economical feasibility. The main parts of the study are:

Technical evaluation and selection

Plant location and infrastructure study
Market evaluation
Feedstock supply study
Business concept study

A feasibility study is mainly performed by an experienced

process engineer. The main documents the study is built
around are process flow diagrams, mass and heat balance
and plot plan. The result of a feasibility study is a cost
estimate with 30 to 40% accuracy.
This is the base for decision making in the next phase.

The basic design is performed by a group of experienced

engineers from process, mechanical, piping, electrical,
automation, civil and structural disciplines.

Detail Design and Procurement

The aim of the detail design phase is to plan and design
all parts of the plant based on the basic design study.
During the detail design the following construction phase
is planned in detail. All equipment and subcontractor parts
are purchased. Important is to ensure both delivery date
and the agreed quality level of all purchased equipment.

Construction/Installation/mechanical
completion/start up
The installation phase starts up close to the detail design
phase. Engineers from the prior phase will work as field
engineers during this phase. This is to ensure knowledge
and experience from the design phase. The field engineers work closely to the subcontractors and can therefore quickly respond to different questions.
Installation work is followed by Mechanical Completion.
This part is to ensure that every part of the project is in
place according to the design. During start up signal and
functional work of the installed equipment is controlled.
This is called Commissioning and this part finalizes the
installation work prior to start up.
