Main Objectives: The human organism is truly magnificent. From the microscopic world of its cells to
the more recognizable organ systems, our human bodies contain layers of organization and interaction
with a complexity and beauty difficult to fully appreciate from the surface. In this class we will take a
journey through the body exploring the anatomy and underlying physiological principles of its parts,
thus providing both a foundation of understanding and a greater appreciation.

This the first semester course of a two semester general human anatomy and physiology program,
designed for students who plan to transfer to programs in the health sciences. These programs include
nursing, respiratory therapy, physical therapy, dental hygiene and radiological technician as well as
others.

Exams and Grading: There will be six (6) lecture exams during the semester. The lecture exams will
be worth 100 points each. Each exam will contain various types of questions including multiple choice,
matching, and essay/short answer; you will need a SCANTRON for part of the exam.

Additionally, there will be several quizzes throughout the semester. These will cover lecture material
and will help ensure that you’re keeping up with the material before each exam. Upcoming quizzes will
be announced in class.

There also will be three (4) LABORATORY EXAMS (PRACTICALS) where you will be identifying
structures seen in lab and details about those structures (e.g. functions, etc.). Each practical is worth 100
points.

An additional 20 points is assigned for your dissection, participation, attendance and attitude.

The need of each individual class varies. Therefore, I reserve the right to change this point allocation
and exam/assignment breakdown.

Make sure to hold on to all of your graded materials as they are your “paper trail” for any questions
about grades/points that could come up later in the semester.

Your letter grade will be determined by the percentage of maximum points that you earn. The grading
scale is as follows:

A 90% or above
B 80%
C 70%
D 60%
F 50% and below

Missed Exams: You must make every effort to take the exams in class at the scheduled time. You will
be allowed to take a make-up exam for the following excused absences only:
• Participation in College-sanctioned events
• A documented illness or hospitalization of you or your child
• Documented death of an immediate family member
• Other absences for which you have notified me at least 1 week in advance.

The make-up exam may not be the same as the scheduled exam given in class, although it will cover the
same material.

Withdrawal policy: It is the responsibility of the student to initiate withdrawal. The last date for
student-initiated withdrawals with a guaranteed “W” is 3/5/10. After this date (and until 4/26/10), a
student may withdraw with a “W” if passing and a “Y” if failing. Students who stop attending class but
do not officially withdraw from the course will receive the grade earned (likely an “F”).

Classroom Courtesy: Please turn phones and pager off during class and lab. If you are a caretaker
and your phone must remain on for safety reasons, please keep it on vibrate mode and leave the
classroom before answering or returning a call

Internet, E-mail & Computer Access: You will need internet, GCC e-mail and computer access
outside of class time to access web resources and to receive posted lectures, quizzes, and e-mailed
announcements. You should check your e-mail at least weekly. There are many computers on campus
for you to use.

Academic Dishonesty: This includes, but is not limited to, copying from sources such as the internet
or books without including a citation to the material copied (such as text, photographs or diagrams).
Quotes require quote marks and attribution! Text shall be deemed to have been copied if it is
substantially similar to the original source and has not been written in the student’s own words. Work
that results from collaboration MUST be written in your own words and may not be copied from another
students work. Work submitted as your own work that has been copied or contains even a single copied
sentence fragment will be considered plagiarized work. I reserve the right to deal with cheating or
plagiarism by any of the following: 1) ZERO points for the project/assignment, 2) dropping the student
one or more grade levels in their course grade, 3) immediate withdrawal from the course with a failing
grade (Y), and/or 4) reporting the case to the Dean of Students. Zero tolerance!
