Project Description:
In order to operate effectively, a health plan such as topaz must be able to manage both the cost and the quality
of cares services. Without adequate balance between the two, a health plan may not be able to maintain its
financial viability and/or meet the quality needs of member, provider, regulatory and accrediting bodies. To
effectively manage the two, health plans use a medical management system
Utilization Management is a key part of the Medical Management activity that a health plan uses to evaluate
and administer the appropriate use of medical services based on medical necessity or plan policy in a timely
manner. Health plans generally want to improve UM efficiency by minimizing the administrative burden for UM
staff members so that staff member can focus their time doing the actual work.

UM staff are responsible for working/completing the UM cases that they have been assigned to. The health
plan may have policies that set the priority for clinical reviewers to use when deciding which cases to work first.
UM staffs are responsible for monitoring Internal Communications sent/received on UM cases and completing
those communications
