Washington defines psychology as a science of description and application

used for the "interpretation, prediction, development, and improvement of

human behavior" and that psychology was originally a branch of philosophy
.(Tom Bolling, The University of Washington,Seattle)

1. The word Psychology is made of two ancient Greek words psyche meaning
soul and logos meaning word. Thus, Psychology pertains to the study of
mind, thought, and behaviour. Although the subject mainly studies the human
behavior but the animal behavior is also studied either as a separate branch
of psychology (animal cognition) or it is studied in order to gain insight into
human behavior and psychology by making a comparison between the two
(comparative psychology). Wilhelm Wundt was the first person to call himself
a psychologist, and he opened the first psychological laboratory in 1879 and
it is only recently that Psychology has developed as a separate discipline and
science.
It must be observed that Psychology does not study brain or nervous system as such
but rather it is studied in terms of phenomenological or information processing theories
of mind. However, in the recent past psychology has included a deeper understanding
of brain function both in psychological theory and practice, especially in the fields of
cognitive neuroscience, neuropsychology and artificial intelligence.
understaindng Psychology is the scientific study of human and animal behavior with the
object of why living beings behave as they do\
the sum or characteristics of the mental states and processes of a person or class of
persons, or of the mental states and processes involved in a field of activity: the
psychology of a soldier; the psychology of politics.
The science of the human soul; specifically, the systematic or scientific knowledge of
the powers and functions of the human soul, so far as they are known by
consciousness; a treatise on the human soul.
Psychology is the study of the mind and behavior. The discipline embraces all aspects
of the human experience from the functions of the brain to the actions of nations,
from child development to care for the aged. In every conceivable setting from scientific
research centers to mental health care services, "the understanding of behavior" is the
enterprise of psychologists. By apa American psychological association
The immediate condition of a state of consciousness is an activity of some sort in
the cerebral hemispheres [physiological basis for behavior--mind as function
(effect) of brain (cause)].

Psychology is the description and explanation . . .

that is,
the study of the causes, conditions, and
immediate consequences
so far as these can be ascertained,
of states of consciousness . . .
such as sensations, desires, emotions,
cognitions, reasonings, decision, volitons,
and the like.
By William james
Wilhem Wundt imagined psychology as a science (like chemistry or physics) in which
consciousness is a collection of individual identifiable part

Let's see what a few dictionaries have to say and how a word could alter and lose
it's true and actual meaning.
