Getting

Started with NFDP Video Observation Tours

Welcome to the National Faculty Development Program! As part of your training to become a
National Faculty member, you will be viewing sections of the PBL 101 Workshop in an interactive
learning environment called Zaption. Each video tour offers you the opportunity to answer
questions and reflect on key facilitation techniques and rubric points. You will also see exemplars of
excellent facilitation and components of the National Faculty Performance Rubric put into practice.

Please follow the steps below to get started with Zaption. If you have any difficulty using the interface
you can contact Catherine Meharchand (catherine@bie.org). For questions regarding content,
expectations or the NFDP program in general, please contact our Curriculum and Faculty Manager,
Gina Olabuenaga (gina@bie.org).

Creating a Zaption Account
Before you can start using Zaption you will need to create a free account.

1. Visit www.zaption.com and click the Getting Started button in the top right corner.
2. Fill in the fields on the right (First Name, Last Name, etc.) to create an account using the email

Once you have finished creating your account, you will be taken to the My Tours page. Here you will
see several draft tours (highlighted in blue) available for you to use if you would like to experiment
with making your own interactive video tours. You will not be expected to create your own video
tours as part of your training1.

Selecting a Video Observation Tour
The NFDP Video Observation Tours will be published to your account on Tuesday, December 23rd,
2014 (they will be highlighted in orange). If your account is not created by that date, you will not have
access to these tours until we return from the BIE holiday break on January 5th, 2014.

These tours are not editable and you must be invited to participate in them. You can access the NFDP
tours from this screen, or you can click on the Groups menu pull-down at the top of the screen and
choose NFDP Observation to visit the Group site:

Here are a few guidelines to help you along the way:

1. Before you begin, make sure you have the following resources available:
a. The PBL 101 Workbook
b. The National Faculty Performance Rubric
c. Writing materials for taking notes
d. This guide (in case you need help!)

1. Watch the videos in the following order:
a. Driving Question - Micki - PBL 101 - Day 1
b. HQ Assessment - Feroze - PBL 101 - Day 2
c. Differentiated Instruction Time Debrief - Jennifer - PBL 101 - Day 2
d. Critical Friends Setup - Feroze - PBL 101 - Day 3

2. Each tour starts with a slide that will give you information about the workshop section you are
about to watch and how long you should expect to spend working. Tours will take between 20
and 60 minutes to complete, including time to answer questions and write reflections. You
can stop and return to a tour without losing your previously entered answers. When you
begin the tour again you will be asked if you would like to resume or start over. Choosing
Start Over will erase your previously entered answers, choosing Resume will preserve
them.

3. We encourage you to watch the tours as many times as needed to fully understand the
material, as you will be facilitating many of these sections in your first co-facilitation. To view
a tour from the beginning without losing your responses, choose Resume and use the
Rewind button to return to the beginning. Remember: choosing Start Over will erase all
your previously entered responses!

4. To more forward in a tour, click the Play button. To
return to previous prompts or questions, click the
Rewind button and to move ahead, click Forward:

4. Take note of any documents that you need to review before you begin a tour. You will find
this information on the second slide (The Context).

5. Keep a list of your questions about the material covered in the tours as you work through
them. You will have an opportunity to share and discuss at Bootcamp.

7. You will see several types of informational and interactive prompts during each video:

a. The Context: provides contextual information about the workshop section. Remember
to complete any required reading or pre-work before starting the tour.
b. Building Background: explains concepts and provides background on the subject
matter being covered in the workshop.
c. Your Turn!: offers you the chance to respond to questions asked of workshop
participants and to share your facilitation style.
d. Facilitation Note: highlights exemplary facilitation techniques.
e. Rubric Check: ties facilitation examples in each tour to specific points in the National
Faculty Performance Rubric.
f. Facilitation Reflection : guided reflections to encourage deeper understanding of key
facilitation techniques and rubric points.
g. Resource Review: directs you to relevant resources both online and in your BIE
publications. At the end of each tour you will see a recap of all the resources offered.

8. There are several sections where you will be able to observe participants engaging in table
talk and group work in real time. These segments have been included to give you a sense of
how long participants should have to absorb and process information at certain points in the
workshop. You will benefit most from these moments if you do not fast forward through
them.

9. Once you have finished a tour you will have an opportunity to review and change your
responses. You may also retake tours and enter new responses, but be aware that if you
choose to retake a tour all previous responses will be deleted.

10. To return to the My Tours page or the NFDP Observations Group, click the Back button on
your browser.

We hope that you find the NFDP Video Observation Tours informative and inspirational. This
introduction to facilitating the PBL 101 Workshop is just the first part of your journey. As you move
forward through the NFDP training you will have many opportunities to observe and practice
excellent facilitation. We look forward to working with you throughout this process!
