(Inside a gopis house not big not small. Butter pots hanging.. Churning pots/rods to
show if possible)
Screen Opens.
(Mother Gopi Prabhavati and Padma Gopi are busy in setting up butter pot in the middle
of the house)
Padma
(Neighbor)
Prabhavati! We will place some sweet butter in the middle of the house!
I am sure we will catch the thief today with our own hands.
Prabhavati
Yes Padma!
Every time we complain that her son is stealing butter at our house, she says: (with funny
face) We have so much of butter in our house...why should my son steal!
Of course we love and even wait for our Kanniah to come and eat the butter we make!
But every time I tell Yasoda, she does not believe and I feel like a fool!
Today we will hide and catch him by our own hands and take him to Yasoda.
Then she has to believe us!
Padma
Prabhavati
And when we tell this to Yasoda, she does not believe us!
In fact one day I caught him with my own hands. Then he begged me and cried, O
maiya! You are my very dear mother! I like the very sweet butter you prepare for me. I
know you wont punish me
When he begged me and called me maiya, tears came from my eyes and I forgot myself.
He cleverly pulled his hand from me and ran away!
(Page: 3)
Padma
Yes, he is very tricky! You wont even believe what he did last week.
That day I cleaned all the pots and did not have any butter in the house. You know what he
did? Seeing no butter for him, he pinched my innocent younger child who was sleeping in
the cradle and ran away. He pinched so hard that my poor child was crying and crying.
Not only that... If the butter is not tasty for him, he breaks the pot!
We will catch him today!
(They hear sound of ankle-bells outside the house).
Prabhavati
I hear some ankle bell sound! Yes, he is coming. Let us run and hide!
(They run and hide inside)
(Kanniah slowly enters the house)
Sudama
Krishna
(Entering the house carefully looking all the sides to see if anybody is watching)
(whispering)
Wow, there is a lot of butter for us! And no one is here!
Krishna
(Puts his hands inside the pot and pulled a handful of butter and eats)
Oh, it is very sweet!
Prabhavati

Krishna
Prabhavati
You think every house is your house! You steal from every house!
If it is your house, then why are you stealing?
Krishna
(Page: 4)
Prabhavati
Krishna
Oh! Your calf ran right into my pot? Has it? Show me - where is your calf then?
(Taking a toy calf from the pot and with great excitement)
See, here it is! You did not believe me! My calf was hiding inside, and I caught him now!
Prabhavati
You have tricked me many times like this. You cannot fool me this time!
I am going to take you to Yasoda right now! Whenever I tell Yasoda that her son is a thief,
she does not believe me. I feel like a fool every time!
Today, I caught you red-handed and I am going to tie you and cover with a blanket and
take you to your mother.

Padma
We tied him and brought him covered in a blanket so that he cant escape.
Prabhavati
Now, you have to believe me! Every time I complained, I felt like a fool as if I was talking
some non-sense.
(With a winning smile, Mother Gopi uncovers the blanket to show to mother Yasoda. )
Now you see for yourself!
(But, from the blanket, her own son comes out!)
Yasoda
Prabhavati
(with a shock) Oh No! I swear I caught your son! How did it happen?
Yasoda
Now it is very clear! It is your son who has been stealing your butter!
Your son is the one who is stealing from every house!
I also see butter in your face and you too have eaten with him!
You blamed my innocent Kanniah for that?
I am not going to hear any more of your complaints!
Prabhavati
Yasoda! Believe me... I really caught your son with my own hands. I promise!
O Narayana! I feel like a fool!

The Play
(Yamuna River.. Forests, Govardhan Hill, Kunja, Cows and Calves)
Screen Opens.
My dear Madhu-Mangal... You are the best in the whole world for great great ideas!
Well I want to meet Radhika and the gopies. I ran out of ideas. I want your help..
MadhuMangal You are the dullest being in the universe! Otherwise why, being the Lord of the Universe,
should you come here to look after the cows!
And no wonder why gopies call us monkeys and donkeys!
I am a respectful Brahman in an eminent position. Being a minister and priest for you, I
will help you. But you know my fees, right?
Krishna
Hmm... Laddus?
I know you will do anything for a laddu. You shiver at the smell of prasadam!.
Ok, I will give you 20 laddus.. Tell me the idea.
MadhuMangal Alright.. listen.. this time we will use your flute to do the trick....
You pretend to sleep in the Kunja alone where Gopies come to pickup flowers..
Then ..(whispers at the ear of Krishna about the plan - explain by actions - no talk)
Krishna
(Felt happy first, then a doubt comes) But what if the plan doesn't work?
MadhuMangal I cant give you any guarantee. Don't blame me if it doesn't work.
Whether it works or not, you still owe me the laddus!
MadhuMangal Also another thing,..
The gopies should never know that it is my idea.
Every time I give you idea, I end up in getting beaten up by the gopies!
My back is still aching from their beating with their brooms last time.
We will go and hide to see if you mess up!
(Madhu-mangal and other friends leave the place)

Part-2
[Krishna is pretending to sleep under a tree in the bank of Yamuna. Soon the gopies come there to pick
flowers. Krishna slowly leaves his flute loose from his hand. The gopies see this.]
Lalita
Vishaka
Radhika
Very nice idea! But how and who can steal it from him?
Champakalata
Chitra
(Everyone)
Radhika
Krishna
(Krishna wakes up and sees his flute missing. He searches around but does not find it)
O! My flute is missing! Someone has taken my flute!
(He looks around and sees the gopies. He walks to them and first asks Kundalata)
Kundalata, do you know anything about my flute?
Kundalata
Krishna
Radhika
(Angrily) No. Why do I want your flute? Who will ever want that piece of bamboo stick
with holes! If you want, come to our house and there are so many bamboos at our back
yard. You can cut as much as you want!
Krishna
Lalita
I do not know anything about your flute. I have better things to do than stealing that dumb
piece of bamboo stick!
(Page: 10)
Krishna
Chitra
Krishna
(Looking at Radhika) I am sure that one of you must have stolen my flute!
Radhika
You are now blaming us as thieves? You are the only thief in Vrindavan!
You are calling us thieves?
Lalita
Campakalata
Your father Nanda Baba is not black and Yasoda Maiya is also not black like you.
Su Devi
Kundalata
(With pity) If you tell us why you are black we will return your flute.
Krishna
Why I am black? Hmm.. You know.. when I was born, it was a very very dark night.
Everything was dark. So I was born black!
(All the gopies laugh)
Tulasi
You big liar! You are not going to get your flute back!
Krishna
Ok, you want me to tell the real reason?.. See, when I go for cow herding.. you know my
maiya gives me a black blanket. When it rains, the color from that black blanket gets onto
my body! So I became black.
(All the gopies laugh)
Tulasi
Krishna
Ok! I will tell the truth. You know, when I was a child, my maiya and elder gopies they
used to give me milk from black cows. You know- milk from real black cows! I drank it
and became black!
(All the gopies laugh)
Su Devi
Visakha
If you do not tell the truth, we are going to dress you like a gopi.
Tell us the real truth.
Krishna
Promise.. I will tell the real truth this time. I promise and you must return my flute.
See.., you all put so much of kaajal in your eyes and then take bath in Yamuna.
Your kaajal gets into the river and the river becomes black.
And when I come to take bath, all your kaajal gets all over my body and I become black.
(All the gopies laugh)
(Page: 11)
Krishna
Visakha
Sakhis, that is it. He is always a liar. He can never tell any truth.
Lalita
Radhika
You should promise to us that you will never ever give trouble to any of us the gopies!
