Clinical Clerkship Information

(1) Clinical Clerkship guidelines and the Clinical Log Sets can be downloaded from the Windsor Web Site
(http://www.windsor.edu/student-dwnld.html)

(2) Electives are your choice and consist of 12 weeks of rotations that you may feel are beneficial although
many students seem to use these electives to make themselves more identified as a potential residency
training candidate at specific residency training. Some of your colleagues are using the electives to rotate
at Canadian programs or UK program or Nigerian program etc. These electives are arranged by you
although in many cases student rely on paying the coordinator group the extra elective rotation fee/per
week since WUSM has recently changed its policy on financing electives and clinical selectives. (Note:
Cores rotations are covered by Windsor University with the medical clinical coordinator groups being paid
by Windsor University.)
Let Dr. Margoles, Associate Dean Clinical Science know if there are questions after reading the below
information: phone 708-235-1940.
(3) Electives and Mandatory Selectives: You may arrange on your own or you can make a separate financial
agreement with a coordinator group to place you in electives lasting 12 weeks and selectives lasting 12
weeks (Note: Ask for the Cook County John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital Attachment: IMG Registration Form
for Electives)

Mandatory Selective Rotations

(1) Research (4 weeks) may be arranged with dean@windsor.edu online with St. Kitts Faculty member
Baby Maloor or again on one's own by making arrangements for a research rotation or by identifying a
research problem from a previous rotation and working the problem up as a research proposal using data
and epidemiology information as for a proposed study, in which Dr. Margoles may be of some help to the
clinical clerk (drrmargoles@aol.com).
(2) Preventive Medicine (4 weeks) can be a Genetic Counselling rotation or a Nutrition-Physiology
Medicine rotation, or a Occupational Health Medicine rotation or a Rehab Medicine rotation, or an
Allergy/Immunology rotation, or an Infectious Disease Medicine rotation.
Once again, the student must make their own arrangements and at times that might mean that a student
pays for that arrangement on his/her own separate payment arrangement.
(3) Community Medicine (4 weeks) is possibly a Public Health Medicine program or a Child or Adult
Protective Care Medical Service rotation, or a Family Medicine Clinic rotation, or a Rural Medicine rotation
or a Chemical Addiction Clinic rotation, or an Urgent Care rotation.

Frequently Asked Questions

(1) Can these selective and elective rotations be attained through IAME/Ms. Kim Douglas, GCamp, Dr.
Rustum, or MHC with Dr.Bekteshi or with other medical clinical coordinator groups? Yes provided that
you enter into a private and separate financial agreement whereby you pay them for their
arrangement services
(2) If we choose to set up these rotations on our own, will our tuition cover the cost and/or will we be
reimbursed from our tuition if we pay for it ourselves? No since this is a tuition increase from the
Board of Trustees now implemented on all students who have less then 56 weeks of rotations
completed by mid Fall. (Note: The average academic cost for teaching a medical student each
year is about $60,000 (Academy of Medical Science Study done in late 1990(s)) while most
USA schools charge a $30,000/year tuition but the schools can rely on subsidies from
physician clinic practice payments and faculty NIH grants as well as pharmacy research money
towards the medical schools teaching expense of over $60,000/year. Obviously Windsor has
no outside financial supplements and must start to income average its tuition accordingly.)

Clinical Logs, Cases, and Assessment Overview

Indeed, it is hard to give new instructions about a new policy: clinical clerkship rotations. Perhaps, the following
step by step might help.
(1) Step One: List ten (10) patients that you felt were worthwhile to highlight some of the activities, as given
in the example sheet (page 54 - 55 of Windsor Clinical Package 2013 http://www.windsor.edu/word/Windsor_Clinical_Package2013.docx)
(2) Step Two: Take any two (2) from that list and do a write up on two of those cases for that rotation and
send in with other required materials. Please combine both cases into a single document. (Note: With
each log set there is a work up template to use as a guide.)
(3) Step Three: You are given a page with eleven (11) questions/statements. Under each question state any
and all activities and experiences that you believe were associated with that statement during the total
rotation. (page 57 - 59 of Windsor Clinical Package 2013)
(4) Step Four: Please include your assessment of that rotation which is used in determining whether or not
that rotation is to be considered worthwhile for other students. (page 49 - 50 of Windsor Clinical
Package 2013)
(5) Step Five: Send in the log set to drrmargoles@aol.com and come to the next Windsor Student Meeting
at THE DOUBLE TREE HOTEL at Skokie, IL (9599 Skokie Blvd, Skokie, IL 60077) on the last Saturday of
each month at noon. At that time the required core exam will be given for your last core rotation.
(6) Step Six: For the core rotations you are to submit clinical log sets and for the electives and selectives
you are to submit clinical logs.
