If you were able to make it to Indianapolis last month for the American Coatings Show and Conference Im sure you were just as impressed as I was with
the way the whole event turned out. Hats off the American Coatings Association and Vincentz for organizing a great exhibition that seems to get better
and more cohesive with each installment. The show really does feel like the
younger sibling of the European Coatings Show.
With 427 exhibitors and more than 7,500 overall participants from 69
countries the third edition of the ACS 2012 broke all of its previous records
for visitors, exhibitors and footprint.
Exhibitors from 19 countries displayed a comprehensive range of products
on more than 91,000 net square feet of exhibit space covering all aspects of
paint and coating formulation. Companies from abroad accounted for 35 percent of the exhibitors, and in addition to the U.S., leading countries represented at the show included China, Germany, Canada, India, South Korea,
United Kingdom and Turkey.
Aside from all the great networking opportunities the show offered along
with the high level of show oor trafc and a top notch technical conference,
Indianapolis was the perfect choice of host city. Literally everything is within
walking distance which made was extremely convenient.
While the next regularly scheduled ACS will take place on April 7-10, 2014
at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, Ga. due to scheduling conicts from what I hear, the show will return to Indy in 2016 and beyond. Next
month look for a comprehensive report that will include lots of information
on what we compiled from all the booths in terms of new products and technology innovation in the industry as well as lots of photos.
Next month will also feature our annual Top Companies Report, which is
Coatings Worlds most widely read and highly anticipated editorial event every
year. As the global coatings community continues to expand so too does our
report, which will cover more than 90 paint and coatings manufacturers from
around the world.
To qualify for inclusion in the report, you must be a paint and coatings
manufacturer of any kind with sales revenue of $100 million or more for scal 2011. Does your company qualify? Do you know of a company that might
t this criteria? Please let me know! Coatings World aims to bring you the
most comprehensive collection of paint companies and we can always use
your help targeting rms that may be ying under the radar. I look forward
to hearing from you.

BASF and Deutsche

Nanoschicht to introduce
innovative process for
superconducting coatings
High-temperature superconductors can be
manufactured much more efciently and
with less environmental impact by means
of the innovative production process developed by technology company Deutsche
Nanoschicht GmbH. Superconductors
carry current virtually without loss, so
they allow potentially huge savings in generating and transporting electricity. BASF
Future Business GmbH supports Deutsche
Nanoschicht as a cooperation partner.
The wires for high-temperature superconductors are manufactured by a coating
process developed by Deutsche Nanoschicht
that uses chemical solution deposition. The
ceramic layers produced in this way have
superconducting properties because they
feature awless crystal orientation. Chemical deposition processes are technically
challenging but hold enormous economic
potential, said Dr. Michael Bcker, managing director of Deutsche Nanoschicht.
Industrial and energy sector customers,
in particular, can benet from the companys patented solutions. Wherever large
volumes of electricity are generated, transported or used, the technologies we have
developed facilitate innovative power engineering systems that operate efciently with
little impact on resources, said Bcker.
Manufacturers of generators and motors or of cable and mains supply networks for metropolitan areas will be
particularly interested in superconductor
technology. Among other applications it
enables energy to be harvested highly efciently from renewable resources by
means of wind and hydro power generators, especially in offshore wind farms.
High-temperature superconductors
12 | Coatings World

conduct current without resistance at temperatures just above the boiling point of
liquid nitrogen (77 Kelvin/-196 degrees
Celsius). This temperature can be reached
reliably at little cost and maintained during operations by means of commercial
cryo technology. As the current carrying
capacity is high compared to copper, extremely compact and lightweight systems
become an option in electrical engineering.
Deutsche Nanoschicht has developed a
unique process for manufacturing superconductors cost-effectively. Customized formulations are deposited on a substrate by means
of continuous processes.The crystallographic
structure of the substrate is effectively transferred to the ceramic layers being deposited
so that all crystals of the superconductor obtained are perfectly aligned to each other. The
coating consequently features the ideal electrical properties of a monocrystal but does
not show its mechanical properties such as
brittleness or impact sensitivity.
BASF Future Business and Deutsche
Nanoschicht intend to bring this innovative
coating technology to market together. The
superconductor manufacturing process allows a broad range of applications far beyond the energy sector. We believe that the
coating
technology
of
Deutsche
Nanoschicht is a promising technology
platform. Combined with our expertise in
formulation, it can form the basis for the
development of new system solutions for
sensor and energy technology as well as
electronics, said Dr. Ralf Nrenberg, member of the scouting team at BASF Future
Business. By cooperating with Deutsche
Nanoschicht GmbH we can bring together
our expertise in chemicals and the innovative coating process of our partner.

Drr presented its innovative

automotive paint technologies
at the Drr Open House
At the Drr Open House, the companys
business divisions presented innovative
technologies to industry professionals.
Under the motto Production Efciency
for Your Advantage, Drr demonstrated
new solutions in painting, gluing and automation technology.
Aspects such as the reduction of emissions and energy consumption, material
savings and efcient use of space, exibilwww.coatingsworld.com

ity, and efciency in planning, process and

maintenance from the Eco Efciency system are guidelines for Drrs operations.
At the application technology and the
paint and assembly part of the exhibition,
products, technologies and solutions from
this range of performance were presented.
EcoBell3 atomizers for exterior and direct
charging are convincing with their minimal
color change loss and short color change
times. The atomizer plays an essential role in
todays painting process. The EcoBell3 offers
many advantages and alternatives and not
least, it makes signicant contributions in
dealing with energy and resources efciently.
The new swing arm robot EcoRP L153
provides accessibility for small and large car
bodies on a production line, thus increasing
exibility. At the exhibition, the robot was
integrated into a fully-automatic station for
interior and exterior painting in a painting
zone (box concept). The reduction of the
zone length and a more exible production
are essential features of this concept.
The continuous development and improvement of the application technology
products guarantee the highest quality,
greatest exibility and protability during
painting. In the future, the painting robot
from Drr will be available with a uniform
robotic arm for all applications. The second
generation of the color changer EcoLCC
scores points with a new skid positioning
system with servo drive and weight reduction through new valve technology. The
robot control EcoRPC with a new generation of controllers saves up to 30 percent
more energy and has a uniform bus system
for motion and process with Sercos 3.
The seam sealant applicator EcoGun
Sealing IDS with integrated dosing system
reduces complexity and increases dynamics. The EcoGun Sealing IDS reduces material consumption with high dosing
accuracy, improves seam quality through
highly dynamic brush changing, and reduces maintenance effort through reduced
complexity and high durability.
For all gluing requirements in the
body-in-white and nal assembly, Drr offers advanced technologies and products.
For example, during gluing in body shell
construction, the required amount of glue
is reduced by up to 30 percent with the
new, patented, electrically controlled apJune 2012

plicator. At the same time, the

availability of the system increases, and the cycle time is reduced by higher robot speeds.
Drr showed solutions for coating and
gluing rotor blades in the wind power industry for the rst time at this open house. The
company uses its automation know-how
from its traditional business areas in this eld.
The automated application of adhesives and
paint in rotor blade manufacturing increases
quality and process reliability together with
less material consumption.Additional advantages include saving time by overlapping
processes during activation, cleaning, painting and drying, as well as greater durability
through reliable manufacturing processes.
For systems and automation Drr presents the compact, modular paint booth
concept, EcoReBooth. This is based on the
proven EcoDryScrubber technology for dry
separation of paint overspray, which saves
60 percent of the energy required in the
paint booth. New with EcoReBooth is the
integrated, powerful ventilation system located within the cabin cross-section, making the system highly compact. Other
benets include rapid installation through
construction with pre-assembled modules,
and the fact that all maintenance-related
components are situated on one level. The
exible cabin width should also be highlighted, as it is individually adaptable to the
customers setting. This newly designed
paint booth reduces the space required, the
complexity, the number of lter modules,
as well as the consumption of media - and
thus ultimately the costs.
Drr offers a new perspective for sustainable painting with alternative concepts
for the production of industrial process
heating. Drr utilizes solar energy for the
Eco Paintshop, which reduces energy and
material consumption as well as emissions.
Low maintenance and compact Fresnel
collectors are used, which concentrate sunlight and thus function very efciently.
While conventional collectors produce
process heat of only 80 C, Drr achieves
temperatures of up to 400 C with these
high-performance collectors. This way
Drr can heat ovens whose operation requires temperatures up to 220 C. This pioneering step of energy independence is

and power. With it electricity is produced

via a low-emission combustion process in a
micro gas turbine, whose waste heat is used
to heat the oven. Both technologies result
in signicantly lower CO2 emissions and
conserve non-renewable energy sources.
Drr also supports the introduction of
new drive and mobility concepts with innovative automation solutions. For their
customer, Better Place, Drr has manufactured automatic battery exchange stations
for electric cars for Better Place, as part of
the companys expanding global network
footprint. The rst systems are being installed and a framework agreement has
been concluded for supplying additional
equipment. Its a simple concept: You need
not tediously charge a battery that is running low, but instead completely automatically exchange it at a changing station.
This takes no more time to complete than
a visit to the gas station.
As a specialist in vehicle assembly with
know-how in gluing, testing and lling technology, as well as in automation, Drr is optimally positioned to supply assembly lines
for complete drive batteries in electric cars.
This expertise was demonstrated to customers at the eighth Drr Open House.

Market Reports

BRIC paints and varnishes

market valued at $29bn

The paints and varnishes market in the

BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China)
countries was valued over US$29 billion
in 2011, representing an increase of 56.3
percent from the value recorded in 2007,
according to a new report released by Reportlinker.com. The market recorded positive annual growth rates every year
during the review period (2007-2011),
apart from in 2009 when it declined by
3.2 percent due to the adverse impact of
the global economic crisis. Water-based
paints and varnishes accounted for the
largest share of the BRIC paints and varnishes market in 2011 with a market
share of 46.4 percent. The second largest
category in the market was solvent-based
paints and varnishes, which recorded a
market share of 26.6 percent. China was
the largest paints and varnishes market
among the BRIC countries during the review period. The Chinese paints and varnishes market grew rapidly and recorded
a CAGR of 16.90 percent during the review period.
The BRIC countries have played a
major role in the growth of the paints and
coatings market during the review period,
as population growth, rapid urbanization,
increasing disposable income and focus
on nuclear or smaller families have all
combined to considerably raise demand
for residential construction.
Global sporting events such as the
2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016
Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro will require substantial construction activity in
infrastructure, commercial and residential
sectors over the forecast period which will
stimulate growth for paints and varnishes.
Brazil is undergoing an extensive period of reconstruction, with plans to complete 12,265 infrastructure projects
throughout the country by the end of
2016. An investment of US$800 billion
for infrastructure spending is expected in
Brazil over the forecast period, which will
create a large demand for paints and varnishes in the country.
20 | Coatings World

Russia is preparing to host major international events including the 2018

FIFA World Cup, the 2014 Winter
Olympic Games in Sochi and the 2012
APEC Summit in Vladivostok which will
require substantial construction activity
in infrastructure, commercial, and residential sectors over the forecast period
which will stimulate the growth for
paints and varnishes.
The Indian government announced
an investment of US$514 billion
(INR23.5 trillion) in its 11th five-year
plan, covering the 2007-2012 period. In
addition, the government has increased
infrastructure spending, from seven percent of GDP to 10 percent, which indicates the potential for increased
infrastructure construction activities that
could require paints and varnishes.
The level of construction activity in
China will increase due to increasing FDI,
rapid urbanization, ongoing industrialization, the expanding manufacturing sector
and government efforts to develop infrastructure. This will create demand for
paints and varnishes in China, enabling
the countrys paints and varnishes market
to achieve a CAGR of 12.91% percent
over the forecast period.

GIA says growth in end-use

markets drives the pigments
dyes industry
The market for pigments and dyes responds to the coloring needs of a wide
range of end-use industries, ranging from
paints and coatings to construction. With
robust demand in key markets of paints
and coatings, plastics, paper and printing
inks, the pigments market is forecast to
register steady growth in the coming
years, according to a new report titled,
Pigments and Dyes: A Global Strategic
Business Report, published by Global Industry Analysts Inc.
Aided by a choice for brighter aesthetics and higher pigment concentrawww.coatingsworld.com

tion, the pigments industry is expected

to propel ahead at a steady rate. The industry is witnessing a fundamental shift
in the form of greater preference for
high performance metal-based inorganic
pigments, and away from solvent-based
raw materials. The dyes market, meanwhile, largely depends upon the fortunes
of its principal end-user, Textiles, which
account for about 70 percent of the
total demand.
After a brief decline in volume and
values, in 2008 and 2009, which was a
result of the global economic downturn,
the future for global pigments and dyes
market appears to be bright. Global
market for pigments and dyes began to
show signs of recovery in 2009 and registered positive growth in 2010, albeit by
a small margin. The market, however, is
expected to post significant growth in
terms of volume as well as value in the
coming years. Surge in the coming years
would be fueled by growth in the paints,
inks, coatings, and construction industries. Growing demand for high quality
value-added pigments is one of the key
factors expected to result in a spurt in
growth. Further, the market, although
mature, would also receive a boost as
companies increasingly feel the need to
evolve and design their products in sync
with changing requirements for new and
emerging technologies. Higher rates of
capacity utilization are expected to further drive prices upwards. Mounting energy costs would also considerably
impact global pigments consumption.
Asia-Pacific represents the largest and
the fastest growing regional market for
pigments and dyes worldwide, as stated
by the new market research report. A
key trend witnessed in the recent past is
the migration of manufacturing capacity
from the West to low-cost countries in
the Asia-Pacific region, driven mainly by
stringent environmental compliance issues. China will continue to be the single
largest and fastest growing market. CW

of these coatings are based on high molecular weight hyaluronic acid (HA).
This technology has applications among
a range of fields including ophthalmology, urology, cardiology, endoscopy, and
neurovascular. HydroSleek coatings have
overcome the trade off between lubricity
and durability seen in cross-linked coatings. Additionally, HydroSleek involves
a heat-cure process so both ID and OD
may be coated without the concerns surrounding UV curing. These new products will act as Biocoats front line
solution to medical device firms seeking
to reduce surface friction for their devices the company said. CW

Industrial Coatings Segment Tackles VOC Issues

Previously confined

the VOC issue is

of industrial
coatings as well.

uropean regulations aimed specically at
limiting emissions of volatile organic
compounds (VOCs) from coatings have
been mainly conned to decorative paints and
the manufacture of the coatings themselves.
The last piece of major European Union legislation targeting VOCs was the decorative paints
regulation dubbed Decopaint, which in two
phases from 2007 and 2010 decreased the VOC
content of certain coatings by over 90 percent.
The European Commission, the EU executive
which is responsible for drawing up new EU legislation for approval by the European Parliament
and EU governments, appears to have abandoned
tentative plans to extend VOC limits to other
coatings sectors, especially industrial paints.
It has also put aside plans for regulations on
interior air quality (IAQ) which would probably trigger not only tighter restrictions on VOCs
in decorative paints but also in wood coatings
on ooring and furniture and in plastic coatings
in household appliances.
Nonetheless producers of industrial paints,
especially anticorrosion and protective coatings,
have been feeling under pressure to reduce the
VOC emissions from their products.

www.coatingsworld.com

They are being pushed by other legislation

not specic to VOCs, new guidance from standards organizations, by customers or by their
own environmentally friendly strategies.
(Were) not waiting until the last minute for
legislation to show the way, said Dimitris Likouressis, group marketing manager at Hempel
of Denmark. We are trying in all our developments to explore ways of combining high performance competitive products with the least
impact on the environment. We need (also) to
understand that our customers with their own
sustainability policies have every intention to
work for a safer environment.
NORSOK, the Norwegian organization that
sets international bench marking standards for
the North Sea oil and gas, energy and marine
sectors, has just been tightening up its VOCs and
other rules. Certain water tanks now have to
have solvent-free coatings under NORSOC.
Among non VOC-specic EU regulations the
biggest inuence on solvents usage is being exerted
by REACH, the regions legislation on the registration, evaluation and authorization of chemicals.
It requires that all chemicals manufactured
or imported in quantities of 10 tons or more a
year will have to be registered with data about
their derived no effect levels (DNELs). These
show the extent of exposure to a substance
below which no adverse effects are expected to
occur. The REACH denition of DNEL substances include VOCs.

Manufacturers of industrial coatings

are steadily moving over to low-solvent or
solvent-free products. Weve seen growing interest from our customers for lower
VOC alternatives, said Mary Rose Correa, industrial market manager for Dow
Coatings Materials.
International Paint, the marine and
protective coatings division of AkzoNobel, has reported that ABB, the global
leader in power and automation technologies, had recently awarded it a coatings supply contract for transformers in
which a priority was a reduction in
VOC emissions.
International Paint has a wide range of
VOC contents in its paintsextending
from virtually zero to over 400 grams per
liter. In discussions with ABB before the
award of the contract International
stressed that VOC emissions were not necessarily linked to VOC content.
While VOC per liter is important it is
also essential to understand the relative
volume solids content of the coatings, the
total dried lm thickness (DFT) of the applied lm coating system and the overall
VOC released per area painted, said
Jamie OBrien, worldwide power market
manager at International.
Hempel has just introduced a new solvent-free epoxy coating for the interior of
storage tanks and pipelines, specied for
temperatures up to 93C (200F), which
enables oil and gas companies to store and

handle high temperature crude oil and

water without risk of contamination.
The coating with the brand name
Hempadur 35900 does not release VOCs
during application so that it conforms
with strict environmental regulations such
as those of California in the US and the
new NORSOK standards.
It was quite a challenge conforming
to the NORSOK standards because it
took nine months of testing according to
NORSOK requirements, said Kunal
Nadkami, Hempels group oil and gas
segment manager. It was particularly
demanding for solvent-free coatings,
which had to show that they operate at
high temperatures.
Hempel believes that the trend to lowVOC emissions or VOC-free paint in sectors like oil and gas will extend to other
coatings segments.
There is a strong momentum behind
the move to low or solvent-free anti-corrosion and protective coatings in oil and
gas production, both off- and on- shore,
said Nadkami. The large players in the
market are taking the lead on the issue.
They are taking on the responsibility of
ensuring that the coatings they use have
both a high level of performance and are
environmentally-friendly.
The formulation of anticorrosion and
protective paints with low VOC contents
can be technologically challenging to coatings producers, particularly if their per-

www.coatingsworld.com

formance has to be at least equivalent to

that of solventborne products.
The durability, hardness and chemical
and UV resistance of protective solventborne epoxy coatings can be difcult to
replicate in low-VOC paints. Dow Coating Materials has recently introduced waterborne systems with very low VOC
contents, which it claims rivals solventborne properties.
One option when switching to low
VOC formulations with epoxy coatings is
to use liquid instead of solid systems. But
while these give high levels of hardness
they can also have less exibility than the
solid epoxies.
Poor gloss and foaming can present
problems in low-VOC protective coatings,
requiring the use of new types of deaerators or defoamers.
At a time of slow economic growth
and low capital investment, the move
away from solventborne anticorrosion
and protective coatings may be a gradual
process in Europe because of the necessity for expenditure on new equipment
for applying more environmentally compatible paints.
This is now a trend, said Nadkami.
The technology, which is now showing itself to be suitable for the oil and gas sector will be suitable for other sectors. At
the moment the oil and gas sector and to
some extent the marine segment is driving
this extension into other segments. CW

Strategies & Analysis

Keeping the Family Business In the Family

by Ira Miller
The Chemark Consulting Group
recently interviewed the founder and CEO of
a successful small business and his two sons.
The founder wants to grow the business and
ensure a place for his sons. The boys want the
business to succeed and become the foundation
for employment in their community and wealth
for the family for generations to come.
We have put together a three-step game plan
for this business that brings the sons into the decision-making process both as executives and
owners. The three steps include:
1. Finding Capital (pricing models; cash cycles; packaging models)
2. Strategic Direction (external view; internal view; implementation of change)
3. Organization Impact (structure/ management; policies/methods; involvement)
In the process of discovering this particular
familys goals, I came across a number of gaps
that we will need to bridge as we work together.
As you will see below, Priscilla Cale and David
Tate have identied some of the more frequently
encountered gaps in family-owned businesses.

Excerpted from Building Commitment in the

Family Business Begins with YOU, By Piscilla
M. Cale, MBA and David C. Tate, PhD
Generational differences between owners and
successors can account for some of the interpersonal challenges that surface in familyowned or closely held businesses. Members of
the veteran generation may see Baby Boomers
as self-absorbed and view those of Gen X or Y
as stubborn, unaware and disrespectful. Baby
Boomers may characterize members of Gen X
or Y as rude, impatient and having little regard
for established processes. And members of Gen
X or Y might characterize Baby Boomers as
workaholics, self-righteous and clueless. Either
way you slice it, those in Gen X and Y are oftentimes (and unfairly) labeled as irreverent
and uncommitted.
But when it comes to family businesses,
most family business owners want the business
to remain family-owned. And so, members of
the senior generation face a dilemma: while
they may want to transition the business to the
next generation, they are fearful that the next
26 | Coatings World

generation is not or will not be as committed

to the business as they are.
In a number of surveys, commitment is ranked
as the second-most important successor attribute
just behind integrity. Conversely, lack of committed
leadership has been cited as a barrier to succession.
So, for family business leaders, the question becomes: How can I build commitment in successors?
Here are a few tips on how leaders can foster
commitment in the succeeding generation.
Exhibit commitment
One gripe heard from successors is that it is unfair
to expect them to be committed to a business that
(a) doesnt have an established plan for succession;
(b) doesnt have leaders who have built an estate
plan that protects corporate assets; (c) doesnt have
formally identied career paths and job descriptions; and (d) doesnt have a strategic plan. And
their concerns are not baseless. In fact, only about
one-third of family businesses have a strategic
plan, one-third have built a succession plan, onethird have an estate plan (that goes beyond a simple will), half have developed job descriptions and
only one in ve have descriptive career paths by
job function. So for the next generation to be committed to the business, leaders must exhibit commitment by establishing plans and processes that
will ensure there will be a strong business that can
survive beyond the transition of leadership.
Appreciate different work styles and the efciencies technology brings
Globalization of the late 20th century (and the
dotcom era) has brought much efciency to the
boardroom, and it also allows leaders to delegate
tasks to others more effectively and outsource
those tasks that are not value-added. Technology
allows leaders to videoconference, work remotely,
monitor progress toward goals and be plugged in
virtually anywhere and at anytime. Yet, just because successors may not physically be at the ofce
for 12-hour stretches every day doesnt mean
theyre being unproductive. Understand that technology brings opportunities to have a work/life
balance, and brings about greater efciency that
places less cost demands on the business.
Be a participatory leader
When leaders involve successors in current business decisions, it fosters buy-in and feelings of inclusion. It also generally leads to better decisions
(being that the leader has considered multiple opinwww.coatingsworld.com

ions) and helps successors to believe that the business will be strong enough to survive a transition.
In fact, studies of leadership in family rms found
that participative leadership was associated with a
number of positive results, including favorable
family and nancial outcomes, greater employee
satisfaction and greater levels of commitment.
Be transformational
Closely related to participatory leadership, transformational leaders motivate others and help to
build cohesion in ways that increase loyalty. There
are four ways in which leaders can become transformational: (1) by giving individual consideration to employees and acting as a mentor or
coach; (2) by articulating a compelling vision and
communicating optimism about future goals; (3)
by providing intellectual stimulation and challenging employees to think, learn, and share ideas;
and (4) by exhibiting charisma, pride, respect,
trust, high standards and ethical behavior.
With a new generation entering the business
comes a new set of norms and practices that
sometimes mystify those members of the senior
generation. But change is natural, and new ways
of working are an integral part of evolution. Just
remember, though: nobody wants to be part of a
sinking ship. If you want to attract, retain and
build committed next generation leaders, incumbent leaders must put forth the effort rst to let
successors know that they are doing the important work to make sure that the business is safe,
strong and an exciting place to work that offers
opportunities for personal and professional
growth. And so, heres our advice to family business leaders: Be committed to build commitment.

What you can do now

It seems to me there are four steps to take as
you contemplate leadership succession to the
next generation:
Accept that you will not work forever. Desire
for the next stage of life or Mother Nature
will ensure that this assessment is correct.
Make your own, private assessment of the
leadership potential within the next generation.
Ask them about their desires for their life.
Does or could it include running the family business?
Find someone who can guide you, your
business owners, family and leadership
through the planning and execution of the
transition. CW

DIY Audits of Coatings Companies Trade Secrets

By Steve McDaniel, JD PhD
Technology Litigators
smcdaniel@technologylitigators.com
he DIY approach looms large in
certain sectors of our industry,
with do-it-yourselfers painting
everything from model cars to kitchens to
yachts. As discussed in previous iPaint
columns, trade secrets as a means to gain
competitive edges also have a huge presence in our business.
I recently discussed these seemingly
disparate facts with a leading coatings
company serving a very large DIY market,
the products for which it chiey protects
using trade secret techniques. It made me
wonder if our CW readers could use a
guide book for conducting their own
trade secret audits.
Listen, I do recommend professional
assistance, especially to get you started
down the right road. But, I even more
strongly recommend routine reviews of internal trade secret protection programs of
any coatings company. So, heres an abbreviated discussion of how you may wish
to conduct a DIY trade secret audit.
There is one and only way to organize
your DIY trade secret audit and, that is by
preparing yourself for a trade secret lawsuit.
Sorry, thats just the way it is. Physical security is ne, gotta have it. But, unless you
have built the legal barricades around your
trade secrets, youre just whistling Dixie.
There are really only a few possible
legal theories (reasons you can use to sue
someone for swiping your trade secrets)
and chiey there are two upon which you
should focus your audit. Namely, either
the bums broke a contract with you under
which they promised NOT to steal them,
or they committed the civil equivalent of
criminal theft (the tort of trade secret
misappropriation).
This means that your audit should

28 | Coatings World

have two principal assessments of equal

importancea review of all contractual
relationships giving rise to a duty to protect your trade secrets, and a review of all
possible avenues by which someone might
tortuously steal your trade secrets. Ancillary to these reviews, you must be mindful
of where it is you will likely bring the lawsuit (the venue), what laws will govern the
suit (the choice of laws) especially if you
are a multi-state or multi-national organization (and, who isnt these days), and
when it is you must bring the lawsuit (a
matter of tracking statutes of limitations).
You are going to have to establish
your case using facts and as the trade secret owner, you have the burden to do so
by presenting the court with a preponderance of the evidence in your favor.
Sometimes, you have to do so very
quickly if you are seeking any sort of preliminary relief to prevent use of your secrets (injunctions, seizures, freezing of
assets, bankruptcy proceedings, etc.). So,
prepare well in advance for this aspect of
your case. You can do so by having at
least compiled categorical listings of your
trade secrets and by making some
SWAGs as to the value of each. For example, in your formulations lab, it is
likely that there are ranges of tolerances
in your formulations for each of the components with which you build your coatings. These are very likely generally
referred to in your published MSDS pamphlets, but are actually much more
tightly defined by your chemists. Such a
categorical listing might be: The Supplier identity for Additive ABC and tolerable ranges for same in Formulation
XYZ, representing 70-90% of the market advantage value of the product over
the nearest competitors product. That is
what you would list on your pleadings,
say if you were forced to sue an ex-formulation chemist who walked the ACTUAL trade secret range tolerances to
your competitor.
www.coatingsworld.com

The elements of a trade secret case for

which you must provide proofs are that
(a) the trade secret actually exists; (b) the
trade secret was disclosed in condence to
the defendant or otherwise illegally gotten; and (c) the defendants use or disclosure of the trade secret was in violation of
that condence, causing quantiable injury to you. There are numerous versions
of these elements depending upon the jurisdiction and the facts of the case, but
they kind of boil down to these three. For
this reason, regardless of the theory under
which you bring your suit against the
thieves, your DIY audit should address the
factual underpinnings of these three requisite proofs.
In many jurisdictions, the question of
whether or not there is use in ones own
business comes into play. In one of the
recognized denitions of trade secrets
(called the Restatement of Torts), for information to constitute a trade secret it
must be information used in ones own
business, and which gives him an opportunity to obtain an advantage over competitors who do not know or use it and
be in continuous use.
In another definition source (Uniform
Trade Secrets Act), it need not be used
since the owner may not have yet had an
opportunity to use it. So, your DIY trade
secret audit is going to have to address
which of these rules applies and set up
systems accordingly, or make sure you
June 2012

Protecting the P&C Industrys Intellectual Assets

cover both scenarios.

To this point in setting up your DIY
audit, we have focused on things you
more or less have control over in a trade
secret lawsuit. Now, it gets a bit dicier
namely, predicting how the bad guy is
going to actand catching him at it. For
one thing, you have to show that the
thief either used or disclosed (and/or illegally acquired, under the Restatement
Third of Competition) the ill-gotten
trade secrets he swiped from you in
order to trigger any relief from the
courts. And, in many cases you have only
a short period of time after you know or
should have known about the heist to
sue the curmudgeon.
See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil
may work for the three wise monkeys of
the Tsh-g shrine, but it does not work
for the trade secret owner. To the contrary,
your DIY trade secret audit should have a
very strong component making sure you
have an effective ears-to-the-wall gathering of competitive corporate intelligence,
watchful employee monitoring and reasonable security.
Your DIY audit needs to set in place
a system that kicks in when there is sufficient reason to suspect someone else
has illegally disclosed, acquired or is illegally using your trade secrets. Illegal
acquisition certainly would be established by burglary, but wiretapping and
fraud also qualify. Other improper
means can include unauthorized interception of communications, or inducement or knowing participation in a
breach of confidence by another.
Illegal use or disclosure can arise as a
result of a breach of a confidential relationship, improper means outside a confidential relationship, obtaining the trade
secrets from another that illegally acquired them, and even acquisition by accident or mistake. Similarly, use is not
limited to traditional concepts of manufacturing and sale. Even if a competitor
does not use its knowledge of your
newest formulation improvements from
a technical perspective, but accelerates
its own competitive product in view of
its ill-gotten knowledge of your own
new product launch date, theft may be
shown. Use in a foreign jurisdiction can
June 2012

trigger liability, and be prevented in a

US-based proceeding.
So, cast your DIY audit net widely.
And, do not be put off by claims of independent development or reverse engineer-

ing of your publicly available coatings
that is miraculously accomplished after
you le suitthe initial conduct was still
wrongful and actionable.
Your DIY protection system claxons
start ringing having detected a possible illegal disclosure, use or acquisition of your
trade secrets, and all hands are called onto
the deck. What do you deliver to your attorney to initiate the suit?
Generally, he will need you to gather
that facts that show (1) the protected matter is not generally known or readily ascertainable; (2) it provides your company
a demonstrable competitive edge; (3) you
spent plenty to develop it; and (4) you intended to and did in fact take steps to
keep it protected.

all the while impressing the heck out of
your litigation attorney. Your system will
regurgitate all the steps you have taken as
a condition precedent to assure relative
secrecy and its not just what you DO but
what you DONT do that will loom large.
You DO have restricted access to ofces,
labs, computers, data, etc. You DONT
allow publication of important company
information unless it has been subjected
to a review process. You DO conduct exit
interviews of your own employees, but
you DONT allow new employees to
bring potentially condential information
of a competitor into your own facility
and remind them of same at entrance interviews. You DO discuss condential information with clients and vendors, but
you DONT do so absent a contractual
duty of condence.
A DIY approach to this task may
seem daunting at first. And certainly the
process can be eased considerably with
skilled trade secret experts, but the effort
will pay off in the end. Even if you decide
to begin a revamp of your trade secret
protection processes using a pro, you will
want to routinely make DIY sweeps of
your systems to make sure all parts are
up-to-date and fully operational.
In many cases, a well-designed process
can prevent trade secret theft in the first
place. In the instance that misappropriation takes place, this same well-honed
system can quickly and summarily prevent actual damaging use or more widely
disclosed knowledge of your competitive
information. And, in the fairly rare event
that the suit goes the distance, your system will place your case in the best possible position to prevail. And, just like
any DIY project that you undertake

plugs or painting your denpractice

he industrial coatings market performed relatively well
over the past year. Like most aspects of the coatings business, we experienced a dip in demand for industrial coatings, said Jeff Spillane, senior product manager, Complementary

however, is that the coatings are typically used for protection and
durability and less for aesthetics. This has kept the demand for
industrial coatings higher versus architectural coatings.
Despite the difficult financial situation in many areas of

ters around the world, Likouressis said.

The industrial coatings market is comprised of a number of
diverse segments, such as onshore oil and gas, commercial architecture, general industrial and industrial maintenance. Industrial coatings manufacturers are reporting that the oil and gas
and general maintenance segments are driving growth.
According to Likouressis, the oil and gas segment is maintaining very attractive growth. This is due to all the investment
in deepwater exploration and production that is taking place
these days, as well as projects related to natural gas, both conventional and unconventional, he said. Renewable energy still
represents a small part of the global energy portfolio, but it has
a positive outlook, despite the obstacles that it faces. Mining and
metal processing, water/waste water and other infrastructure segments will also continue to remain attractive in terms of value.
The industrial maintenance business has offered greater opportunity, said Spillane. It accounts for a large portion of the
overall business and at favorable margins. New projects or major
rehabs are larger in terms of gallonage, but they are harder to secure, have lower margins and show greater lag time in payment.
BASFs coatings division has invested 1 million in the construction of a new application center in Oldenburg, Germany, to
strengthen its global business in industrial coatings. The new center, which includes a spraybooth for large objects, several work
rooms and a training and presentation room, will be used for applications in the wind energy sector, as well as for marine and
aircraft coatings and an array of applications in diverse industrial
segments said the company.
We are increasingly gearing our business in coatings for
wind energy to a global market. At the new application center,
we are able to simulate the various painting conditions of our

said Dr. Achim Gast, head of post-coatings at BASF.

A wide range of climate conditions can be simulated at the

center. As a result of the application tests in Oldenburg, application technologies and processes are already being ideally adapted
during development in order to allow smooth and efcient use at
the customers premises. These tests carried out in advance save
money and time for both the coatings division and its customers.
We also shorten the coordination process when there are
product modications, said Lbbo Rttgers, coordinator of the
application center. This allows us to continuously improve our
product quality.
BASFs paint professionals will train their customers at the
new center. In the future, in Oldenburg, they will practice how to
apply BASF products.

Compliance and performance

In recent years, there has been a big shift in the types of products
being used for industrial applications. While the products must
be highly durable and offer the best substrate protection, they
must also comply with environmental legislation.
The protection of the environment is and should remain a
key element in the coatings industry, and not only when legislation is leading the way, said Likouressis. The challenge for
coating manufacturers is to develop innovative solutions that
dont harm the environment, yet also offer the right value to
end-users.
Water-based coatings are denitely interesting. Hempel was
successful in introducing water-based coatings to the very competitive container market, for example, said Likouressis. However, we expect to see more and more solvent-free products
before the use of water-based products scales up.
VOC regulations have had an impact on the industrial coatings market. The Corotech portfolio is still a complete line and
we have worked very hard to ensure all our coatings are com-

BASF offers several products for formulating industrial coatings

BASF offers a number of products to help industrial coatings manufacturers offer safe and durable products.
Some companies see extra value in solvent-based coatings in terms of appearance and performance, and will continue to
use them while managing the health and safety requirements, said Gregory Turco, technical manager, BASF Resins. High solids
and 100 percent solids technologies have continued to improve, and make long-term solvent use more-and-more practical.
BASF is committed to the coatings industry, Turco added. We continue to invest in new polymers as well as new coatings
additives and better pigments. In the polymer area, we expect to introduce products for metal, wood and concrete during 2012.
BASF now produces the Sovermol line of polyols for urethane coatings. This is a high performance line of very high
solids products with good toughness, weatherability and versatility, said Turco. We expect our customers will like these
products when they become more familiar with them.
Other products include Joncryl RPD-950 and Joncryl RPD-980 super-fast curing polyols for urethane coatings. Joncryl RPD950 is for automotive refinish and it is dry-to-buffing in just 30 minutes. Joncryl RPD-980 takes the same technology into an industrial maintenance vehicle, and it provides superfast return to service for active plant environments.
Joncryl OH 8313 and Basonat LR9056 are waterborne polyol and isocyanate combinations that BASF recently introduced.
These provide excellent weatherability and chemical resistance.
Acronal PRO 80 is an advanced metal primer resin suitable for heavy duty environments like bridges or for industrial
metal products. It supports the use of chrome-free anti-corrosive pigments, and achieves top-tier anti-rust performance.

As oil and gas companies are drilling deeper and deeper,
they need to be able to handle high temperature mixtures of
crude oil and water in their crude oil tanks. Hempels
Hempadur 35900 is a high-performance phenolic epoxy that
has superior performance at high temperatures. According to
Hempel, the product has passed the strict requirements of the
latest NORSOK rev. 6, as well as the pre-qualification tests of
the biggest oil and gas companies.
Not only is this product specied up to 93C/200F, its also
solvent-free, which is very much appreciated in the construction
and maintenance of storage tanks, especially as this area often
has strict environmental legislation, said Likouressis.
Hempel is strong in renewables, especially wind energy, and
recently launched a high-performing system for wind blades.
The coating system is extremely exible and is specially designed to withstand the movements of a blade during operation,
said Likouressis. It also provides excellent impact, erosion and
weather resistance. The systemHempels Blade Primer 47400
and Blade 57620is produced in all the key wind regions
around the world. In combination with Hempels highly qualied
teams of coating advisors, this system represents a safe solution
for wind turbine manufacturers and blade producers.
BASF has launched Elastocoat AC, a new protective pipe
coating product line for the water transmission pipe industry.
The two-component, 1:1 by volume polyurethane system can

percent solid elastomeric coating, Elastocoat AC is designed for
the cathodic protection of steel and ductile iron pipe and associated ttings. With excellent impact and abrasion resistance and
cathodic disbondment properties, Elastocoat AC meets the
AWWA-C222 specication, a standard for polyurethane coatings
issued by the American Water Works Association.
BASF Coatings has also introduced two new coating technolobies for the coating of rotor blades. The new coating system, Relest Wind Leading Edge, improves the economic
efficiency of wind turbines. It provides protection of the front
and leading edge of the rotor blade from erosion and due to its
high erosion resistance against rain, sand and hail Relest Wind
Leading Edge is particularly useful for offshore turbines as it
extends their life span and increases the service intervals. Moreover, the material offers major advantages in the application
process: flexible film thicknesses are possible during the coating process, and the short drying time ensures high production
efficiency said the company.CW

International Paint

New Benchmark
To Prove Coatings
Performance
Strong academic research and firm ship operating evidence of the correlation between
applying specific fouling control coatings and reducing fuel consumption and CO2
emissions finds further backing.
Courtesy of International Paint
nternational Paint and BMT Argoss have come together and
will utilize the new BMT Smart Services system to verify,
through independent monitoring and software analysis, the
contribution to vessel performance, fuel savings and reduced
emissions made by International Paints highest performance
fouling control coatings, Intersmooth SPC (self polishing copolymer) antifouling and Intersleek foul release coating.
Understanding hull roughness is an important factor in understanding ship performance, according to International Paint.
Any increase in hull roughness will increase the hull frictional
resistance which will either require additional power and fuel to
maintain vessel speed or, if maintaining constant power, will result in speed loss and longer voyage times.
International Paint claims fuel and emissions savings for its
Intersmooth SPC coating, citing evidence gathered from over
5,000 vessel drydock and inspections for fouling rating, combined with AHR (average hull roughness) measurements.
Behind this specic argument, the International Paint Dataplan system has coating details of over 1.7 billion DWT, representing almost 200,000 drydockings that allow antifouling

36 | Coatings World

performance to be predicted and assessed. Results are derived

from analyzing the in-docking condition of a vessel, its coating
performance and assessing the type, severity and extent of any
fouling, if present. In conjunction with the vessels trading pattern, operational prole and drydocking interval, an antifouling
performance rating can be calculated.
Dataplan also records the vessels coating condition, including the type, severity and extent of any corrosion, cracking, blistering, detachment and mechanical damage, all of which
contribute to and are included in, hull roughness measurement.

Full back-up
International Paint also cites the report, Energy and GHG Emissions Savings Analysis of Fluoropolymer Foul Release Hull Coating, by Professor James Corbetts Energy & Environmental
Research Associates. The report is dated the 10th December 2010.
The report analyzed the latest fuel consumption data of three
vessel types coated with Intersleek 900; Prem Divya, a single engine 21,126 horsepower (HP) tanker, Ikuna, a twin engine 3,400
HP bulker and ve identical post panamax container vessels,
three of which were coated with SPC antifoulings and two with
Intersleek 900.
The results are valuable for the correlation they show between

the coating applied and the fuel consumed the company

said. The report showed that fuel consumption was reduced by 10 percent on the Prem Divya, 22 percent on
the Ikuna and by ve percent in ve container vessels
(based on all ve ships carrying a comparable load). The
report stated that if similar fuel efciency results were
realized by all tanker and bulk cargo vessels within the
commercial eet that, Annual fuel oil consumption
could be reduced by roughly 16 million metric tons
(MMT) per year, fuel expenditures could be reduced by
$4.4 to $8.8 billion per year, and nearly 49 million tons
of CO2 emissions could be avoided annually.
At a more detailed level, the report stated that the
latest generation uoropolymer foul release coating
could offer average fuel and emissions savings of up to
nine percent.

Challenge
For some, though, such claims are always open to challenge. Critics argue that, no matter which coating is applied, a ship will naturally move through the water more
smoothly if it has been blast cleaned during drydocking.
Furthermore, they argue, the linkage between hull
smoothness and reduced emissions is tenuous: traditionally, extra smoothness was more likely to lead to
some ships being driven faster, not to fuel savings.
On the face of it, seemingly persuasive such arguments could be readily countered by observing the growing propensity for owners to operate slow steaming
policies specically in pursuit of fuel (and consequently
emissions) savings. Again, while no one would dispute
that depending upon the fouling control system employed, a newly grit blasted or hydroblasted, freshly
coated hull will perform better than a hull at the end of
its docking cycle, the point is surely to measure how
quickly hull performance deteriorates over time in the
context of the coating systems applied.

Methods of measurement
For this reason, International Paint has been explicit in
detailing the alternative methods that have been used as
the means of establishing linkage between the fouling
control system selected and potential fuel savings.
Some common methods are as follows:
1. Directly comparing the in-service vessel performance when using one fouling control system over
its full lifetime to that of another fouling control
system over its full lifetime.
2. Directly comparing a period of time in-service
prior to dry docking with one fouling control system to the same period after the dry docking and
application of a new fouling control system. Different before and after periods can be used and in
general are much less than full in-service periods,
i.e. 12 months before a dry docking compared to
June 2012

www.coatingsworld.com

Coatings World | 37

FEATURE

International Paint

12 months after application of the new paint system.

Other factors need to remain the same e.g. no engine overhaul at drydock.
3. Directly measuring the same fouling control system over a
given time period. This method uses an industry view that
a vessel on average will lose ve percent speed over a 60month period. This ve percent speed loss would translate
to roughly a maximum average of 15 percent increase in
fuel in order to maintain speed. This assumption is not specic on fouling control type. The baseline data is then compared to the performance predicted or measured in service.

Analysis using antifoulings as examples

Using Method 1, comparing a 60-month docking cycle of a typical rosin-based system with another 60-month docking cycle
with Intersmooth SPC, International Paint has calculated an annual average four percent fuel saving for Intersmooth SPC over
the rosin-based system.
If Method 2 were to be used, and compared 12 months before
dry dock for a rosin-based system with 12-months after dry dock
with Intersmooth SPC, International Paint has calculated fuel
savings would be higher, at nine percent. However, as the periods
in service are at different time periods in the docking cycle, the
company argues that there are limitations of this method, and
that the resultant high value of the improvement is misleading.
It suggests that this method should not be used.
As for Method 3, International Paint points out that in 1986
evidence was published on vessel performance using SPC technology. Townsin et al1 showed that the effect of hull roughness
on fuel consumption could be related in a fairly simple formula, %
Power Increase= A(AHR2-1/3 AHR1-1/3), that for every increase in hull roughness of 25 microns there would be approximately a one percent penalty in the fuel consumption of the vessel.
For typical rosin-based antifouling systems, hull roughness increases by around 40 microns per year. However, due to polishing,
smoothing and minimal build up of leached layer, an SPC antifouling increases in roughness by only 20 microns per year.
Therefore for SPC technology, the fuel consumption increase
over the full period (of 60-months) would be just under one percent per year, reaching four percent in year ve (for the vast majority of vessels that return from service in a clean condition).
Using data generated in the comprehensive Townsin paper
and a detailed analysis of antifouling performance from Dataplan, the fuel consumption increase over a 60-month period for
a rosin-based system can be calculated as 15 percent, the same
gure as what has been described as the industry view.
The calculation of 15 percent is as follows; Rosin containing
systems were measured to increase in average hull roughness by
40 microns/year. Over a 60-month period, this would be a 200micron increase. A 25-micron increase in average hull roughness
equates to a one percent fuel increase. This means an eight percent fuel increase on roughness alone. Between 36- and 60months a rosin-based system is highly likely to foul, typically due
to the build up of a large leached layer preventing biocide release. This results in increased roughness and drag. The effect of
38 | Coatings World

this on fuel consumption has been measured and then calculated

to increase by seven percent; this gives the total increase in fuel
consumption of 15 percent.
If only SPC products are measured, then the fuel consumption
increase over the 60-month period will be four percent. Not being
specic on fouling control type highlights a potential aw in using
an industry view average of fuel loss, International Paint says.
One important omission in Method 3 is that there is no allowance given for any fuel consumption rise effects that are nonfouling related such as a damaged propeller, mechanical damage
to the coating or general engine wear and tear.
Going forward, International Paint has stated that it recognizes the importance of providing owners with as much information on the performance of its products as it can.

Breaking new ground

The new relationship with BMT will provide the independent
monitoring that the partners believe will make both the evidence
and methodology cited above incontrovertible.
The BMT Smart Services system, developed by BMT Argoss,
will capture and compile real vessel data and independently monitor and report on vessel performance. It will record data automatically from ships sensors to monitor engine torque, the speed
log, navigational signals (heading and speed over ground), and provide performance information to the crew and to shore-based management for analysis. The system, which can be installed at the
newbuilding stage or as a retro-t, automatically records thousands
of readings per day, providing analysis of vessel performance.
The system will clearly and transparently measure the in-service performance of International Paints hull coatings, drawing on
BMTs 24/7 in house high quality and validated MetOcean data.
The MetOcean data gathered automatically from high resolution, accurate satellite monitoring is essential to monitor information on board, such as the relationship between hull
roughness condition and fuel consumption. This information
needs to be integrated with the environmental conditions being
experienced by the ship. This MetOcean data includes factors
such as wind speed and direction, currents, (speed and direction)

and wave height and direction.

The system has been modeled using
weighted performance coefcients to provide the basis for measurement of vessel
performance against the condition of the
propeller, hull, engine and fuel consumption. In depth analysis can be used to
monitor the propulsive performance of a
ship and to indicate how much additional
power, or fuel, would be required as a
consequence of the combined effects of
weather and fouling or of the isolated effects of fouling on the hull or propeller.
This analysis enables data trending, which
can be used to optimize any scheduling of
hull and propeller cleaning events and can
be subsequently used to quantify the effectiveness of any such events.
To ensure complete data integrity, all
information collected is sent to BMT. The
client and International Paint will be able
to view vessel data in graphical or tabular
form to develop trend analysis via a secure
access web interface but the data cannot
be changed or manipulated.

In achieving these benets, it is essential
to be able to show that there is an agreed
way of recording standardized data, using
an agreed scientic approach that will be
generally accepted by the industry.
International Paint and BMT say they
want to provide shipowners and operators
with information in a completely open and

for coating resins business

Cytec Industries Inc. has initiated a formal

sale process for its coating resins business.
J.P. Morgan Securities LLC, the companys
nancial advisor, is assisting Cytec with
the process. Cytecs target is to complete
a transaction by the end of the year.
After extensive analysis, we determined that the sale of our coating resins
business is our preferred alternative for
separating the business. Todays announcement marks another signicant
step forward in executing our portfolio
transformation strategy which will bring
additional focus to expanding our market
and technology leadership positions in
high growth advanced composite materials and separation technologies applications, said Shane Fleming, chairman,

that a sale of the coating resins business
coupled with other recent actions will
continue to create enhanced value for our
shareholders.
Cytec has been pursuing a strategy to
increase the focus on its engineered materials, in process separation and additive
technology segments. As part of this strategy, Cytec retained J.P. Morgan Securities
LLC to assist in an analysis of alternatives
available to effect a separation of its entire coating resins business.
As part of this analysis, Cytec recently
announced the sale of its pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) product line to Henkel
for a$105 million. Full year 2011 sales for
the PSA product line were $94 million.
Cytec also announced earlier this year
the acquisitions of Umeco plc, an international provider of advanced composite
materials and Star Orechem International
Private Limited, an India-based manufacturer of extraction technology that supports the growth of the in process
separation segment.
Cytec said it does not intend to disclose
developments regarding the coating resins
sale process until a transaction is announced, which is estimated to occur later
this year.

Lanxess expands worldwide

availability of Bayferrox 912
LOM pigments
Lanxess is now offering Bayferrox 912
LOM, the yellow iron oxide pigment manufactured at its site in Porto Feliz, Brazil, for
sale worldwide. The pigment was launched
on the North and South American markets
years ago and due to its special product
properties has proven effective in paints and
coatings applications, primarily for the production of pigment pastes the company
said.In light of the good market prospects,
we have expanded our worldwide range to
include the Bayferrox 912 LOM from our
Brazilian production site. Porto Feliz is an
essential component of our global production network and will remain so longterm, said Roland Flindt, head of the
inorganic pigments business unit (IPG) in
North America.
Bayferrox 912 LOM is a micronized
yellow pigment with very good dispersibility. The pigments short, needlelike structure results in an outstandingly
low viscosity. With respect to color the
pigment resembles Bayferrox 3910 - a yellow pigment well-known throughout the

convenience, which might result in energy
savings and more responsible clean manufacturing in the coatings industry.
A panel of independent judges for technical and product excellence has singled
out Nubiolas zinc-free anticorrosive pigments, Nubirox 300 Series, for their technological contribution to Chinas coatings
industry. Nubirox 300 Series, which includes Nubirox 301 and Nubirox 302, are
calcium strontium phosphosilicate-based
anticorrosive pigments, the latter having
an additional organic surface treatment.
Both products provide direct anodic
inhibition from the combination of the
calcium and strontium cations but also
good cathodic inhibition due to the basicity/alkalinity of the silica core the company said. The organic surface treatment
used in Nubirox 302 gives improved wetting and compatibility with different
binders and reduces the pigment/binder
interface. They can be used in a wide variety of water- and solvent-based binders.

coating to the maritime industry.
This line of marine coatings is designed
to meet or exceed efcacy of current marine
coatings. The companies are gearing up to
take advantage of the rapidly growing,
world-wide drive toward non-toxic, low
drag underwater vessel surfaces with a goal
of increasing slip through the water by at
least two percent over traditional coatings.
APC is a provider of coatings for marine
superstructure and tank coatings, including
its ChemLine and MarineLine coatings, and
with this venture will expand its lines into
marine coatings for submersed surfaces. Reactive Surfaces develops bio-based additives
designed to bring long-term, stable functionality to coated surfaces, including its
self-degreasing additive DeGreez, self-decontaminating additive OPDtox and antimicrobial additive ProteCoat.
Testing will be accomplished using a
number of different bio-based additives in
a variety of polymer systems in different
marine environments, simulating both stationary structures and underway surfaces,
and culminating within twelve months
with on-ship testing.
The companies will be taking advantage of one of the most recent advancements in coatings technology that adds
signicantly to the traditional role of a

that could serve as a nontoxic alternative

to coatings that contain hexavalent

In the scientists rst experiments, pieces
of steel coated with the high-tech varnish
remained rust-free for only a few days
when immersed continuously in saltwater,
an environment that accelerates corrosion.
By adjusting the concentration and dispersion of graphene within the composite,
the researchers increased to about a

steel can survive in brine. Because brine is
an extremely harsh environment, the
coated steels survival time in the realworld would be many times longer.
The UB chemists leading the project

Researchers develop a coating

for biomedical products that
kills bacteria without
antibiotics
The superbugs have met their match. ConJune 2012

ceived at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), it comes in the form of a coating, which has a magnetic-like feature that
attracts bacteria and kills them without
the need for antibiotics.
The killer coating, which has shown to
destroy 99 percent of the bacteria and
fungi that it comes in contact with, is now
being used by two companies: a contact
lens manufacturer and a company specializing in animal care products.
The next step is to extend its use in a
wide range of biomedical and consumer
products, ranging from implants and surgical instruments to kitchen utensils and
cutlery, as it is harmless to human cells.
This is an alternative solution, which
could replace antibiotics - currently the
main defense against bacteria.
The brainchild of Professor Mary
Chan, Acting Chair of NTUs School of
Chemical and Biomedical Engineering, the
coating made from Dimethyldecylammonium Chitosan methacrylate has earned a
place in the prestigious international journal, Nature Materials.
This sponge-like polymer holds a
positive charge, which acts as a magnettype of force to draw in bacteria, which
has a negative charge on their cell walls.
When the bacterium comes in contact
with the coating, the cell walls are sucked
into the nanopores, causing the cell to
rupture, thus killing the bacterium.
The coating can also be applied on
biomedical objects, such as catheters and
implants to prevent bacterial infections,
which is a serious cause of concern as
many bacteria are now developing resistance to antibiotics - currently our main
source of treatment for infections, Prof.
Chan said. By developing novel materials which uses physical interaction to kill
bacteria cells, we envisage this can be an
alternative form of treatment for bacterial infections in the near future.
Superbugs which had fallen prey to the
coating include Pseudomonas aeruginosa,
which can cause infections in the upper
respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract and
the urinary tract; and Staphylococcus aureus, which can cause infections ranging
from skin boils or abscesses to deadly diseases such as pneumonia and meningitis.

timicrobial coating was rst

sparked off by Prof Chan wanting to nd an effective way to
combat bacteria and fungi on
contact lenses, which could cause corneal
infections (microbial keratitis) that could
lead to permanent visual damage.
According to a 2006 study, the estimated annual incidence of a common
fungi corneal infection, Fusarium keratitis, related to contact lens wear in Singapore is 2.35 per 10,000 wearers.
Building on the success of the antibacterial coating, Prof Chan and her
doctoral student, Li Peng, have now succeeded in making another broad-spectrum antimicrobial solution of a similar
kind which is highly selective, killing off
only bacteria and fungi without harming
human cells In vitro.
Their research was published recently in
a leading journal, Advanced Materials.
This liquid material based on cationic antimicrobial peptidopolysaccharide, is a
polymer which is attracted to microbial cell
walls. When the two come into contact, the
integrity of the cell wall is disrupted which
leads to its rupture and death.
As this novel material kills cells via the
destruction of cell walls, it makes it extremely difcult for bacteria to develop an
effective resistance.
Prof Chan hopes to further develop
this solution into topical applications such
as cream and lotions, which can be used
to disinfect and treat serious or chronic
wounds such as lesions suffered by diabetic patients, killing any bacteria present
that are resistant to antibiotics.
Our long term goal is to develop this
into an ingestible form, so it can effectively treat bacterial infections within the
body, such as pneumonia and meningitis,
replacing antibiotics as the standard treatment, she said.
The two antimicrobial prototypes
the coating and the liquid solutiontook
a total of ve years to research and costs
over $800,000 to develop.
Prof Chan now aims to improve the
liquid solution by developing it into a safe
and proven antibiotic replacement within
the next ve years as the demand for such
alternatives will be even higher with the
rapid emergence of superbugs. CW

siliceous fillers
Hoffmann Group introduced its products
Silt Z 91, Aktit AM and Aktit VM for
applications in elastomers, paint and varnish, and thermoplastics. Silt Z 91 is a
naturally occurring conglomerate of
amorphous and crypto-crystalline silica
with lamellar kaolinite, which has been
subjected to a heat treatment. The components and the thermal process lead to a
calcined product that offers special performance benets as a functional ller.
Aktit is an activated Silt Z 91, produced
by modifying the surface with functional
silanes. The by-products split off during
the treatment reaction are largely removed
during the production process, which

Dow offers hiding OpTiO2nizer

reformulation tool
A new reformulation tool from Dow
Coating Materials is helping paint formulators and the coatings industry find
new and improved opportunities to save
on TiO2 with Ropaque Opaque Polymer
replacement.
The
Dow
Hiding
OpTiO2nizer Reformulation Tool uses
key inputs to calculate reformulations
using less TiO2 and estimates the associated cost savings for formulations while
maintaining dry hiding performance and
equal tint strength. Dow Research Scientist, David Fasano, who developed the
tool, points to rising TiO2 cost as a
major incentive for reformulating with
Ropaque Opaque Polymer. In high-quality flats, the optimum level of TiO2 replacement with Ropaque Opaque
Polymer can be more than twice what it
was a few years ago, and the savings potential has gone from about 10 to more
than 40 cents per gallon. There is also
room for TiO2 savings and added value
in low-level TiO2 paint formulations,
such as mid-tones, primers and economy
interior flats the company said. The Hiding OpTiO2nizer Reformulation Tool
factors in the cost of TiO2, Ropaque
Opaque Polymer, extenders, binder, dispersant and coalescent. It offers close to
200 options for formulators to customize formulations using different levels of TiO2 reduction and fraction of
critical PVC in addition to different
ways to balance extenders. To help guide
formulators, the tool also has the ability
to recommend options based on desired
sheen. These recommendations are based
on data compiled by Dow collected over
more than 30 years of Ropaque opaque
polymer formulation experience. In addition to enabling adjustments to extender, coalescent and dispersant levels, the

PPG pledges $75,000 to fund

Harley-Davidson Museum Color Caper show

PPG Industries Foundation pledged $75,000 to Carnegie Science

Center in Pittsburgh for collaboration with Harley-Davidson
Museum on a version of The Great Color Caper science show
for students in the region surrounding PPG Industries Oak
Creek, Wis., coatings plant. The comic-book styled program uses
interactive multimedia to teach students about light, energy, reection and color while they help solve the mystery of the missing colors from a city called Spectropolis.
Carnegie Science Center developed The Great Color Caper in
2006 with funding from the PPG Industries Foundation and PPG
Industries, and PPG employees collaborated with the centers education specialists to develop the multimedia show and supporting materials. In the original show, audiences work with a
guide named Blinky to nd the culprit who stole colors from the
city, following clues that local PPG scientists provide related to
the science of light and color.
To tie this version of The Great Color Caper to the HarleyDavidson Museum, Blinky rides a motorcycle, of course, and
scientists from Harley-Davidson and PPGs Oak Creek plant
provide video briefings with clues and tips, said Tamela
Greene, manager, business development, Harley-Davidson Museum. We are very pleased that PPG and Carnegie Science
Center are helping us bring this engaging program to students
in Wisconsin and Northern Illinois.

The PPG Industries Foundation previously worked with

Carnegie Science Center to replicate The Great Color Caper program with Discovery Place in Charlotte, N.C. Additionally, PPG
employees at facilities in Mojave, Calif., McCarran, Nev., and
the Detroit area have requested grants through an employee program of the foundation to fund visits by Carnegie Science Center to schools in their areas.
PPG is strongly committed to helping enhance the quality of
life in communities where PPG has a presence, especially through
educational initiatives dealing with the science, technology, engineering and math disciplines, said Jack Marshall, PPG manager,
paint operations, at the Oak Creek plant. The Great Color Caper
program brings a lot of excitement about the STEM disciplines to
schools, offering teachers a platform to build on in the classroom.
Were excited that PPG is working with the Harley-Davidson Museum to offer a version of the program to students in our region.
Established in 1951, the PPG Industries Foundation demonstrates the values of PPG Industries by enhancing the quality of
life in communities where the company has a presence. Interests
of the foundation, in order of priority, are education, human
services, culture and arts, and civic and community affairs. PPG
also supports charitable causes by encouraging employees volunteerism and board service with nonprot organizations. For
more information, visit www.ppgfoundation.com. CW

This van recently took the Harley-Davidson Museums new multimedia, interactive science show, The Great Color Caper, to East Middle
School and Deerfield Elementary School in Oak Creek, Wis., for its first school presentations.
