Design and
Installation
of Buried Pipes
The obvious level of experience of the speakers
leaves me in awe! To be taught by such experts in
this field was a privilege. This is a must attend seminar for pipe design engineers and installers everywhere.
Shah Rahman, Regional Engineer & Marketing Director,
Uni-Bel PVC Pipe Association, Dallas, TX

This seminar was very informative and contained

useful information.
Robert J. Schoenbaum, Senior Staff Engineer,
HKM Engineering Inc., Sherdan, WY

Excellent seminar! I have been designing pipelines

for 14 years and this seminar addressed most of
the critical areas of my concern.
Clete Martin, Project Manager,
Alan Plummer Associates, Arlington, TX

There were good practical examples and

clarification of different pipeline design methods.
The instructors did a good job of keeping
commercial interests out of the presentation.
-Jeffrey Rosenlund, Senior Staff Engineer,
HKM Engineering, Sherdan, WY

I have read several text & manuals on pipe

design, but did not fully understand the concepts
and their importance until this seminar.
Richard Brodeur, Project Engineer,
County Sanitation District of Los Angeles County, Whittier, CA

I recommend this seminar to all engineers

involved in the design responsibility of buried
pipelines.

Purpose and Background

Designers often think of design and installation of buried pipe as two separate
processes. In fact, since performance of buried pipe depends to a large degree
upon good soil support, the two processes cannot be separated. Proper design
procedures require the coordinated design of pipe and installation and subsequent construction procedures must fulfill design assumptions.
This seminar, conducted by two leading engineers in the field of buried pipe,
demonstrates the fundamentals of pipe-soil interaction behavior, how soil and
pipe behavior can be jointly considered in design and how proper construction
methods can achieve design assumptions in the field. The principals of soilstructure interaction covered in this seminar apply to all types of pipe.
The primary objective of this seminar is to show how simultaneous consideration of pipe and soil, as two interrelated parts of one pipe-soil system, can optimize pipe performance and longevity, prevent failures, and minimize the high
cost of downtime and repairs.
The seminar concentrates on pipe materials, pipe-soil interaction, and pipe
design. This portion of the seminar covers the principles of pipe-soil interaction,
pipe materials, and pipe design procedures, with emphasis on soil behaviors as
design criteria. Topics include loads on pipe, deflection calculations, soil stiffness
(E' and Ms), trench width effects, how to evaluate in situ soil stiffness, and how
to consider time dependent behavior of plastic pipe. Design methods are presented for most types of pipe, emphasizing conditions in which the same design
method may be used for all pipe materials. Applicability of computer methods
available for pipe design (CANDE, SIDD, PIPECAR) is also discussed.
The design method presentation focuses on design methods focuses principally on gravity flow pipe (reinforced concrete, clay, corrugated metal, and all
types of plastic pipe), but many aspects of pressure pipe, such as thrust restraint,
are also presented.
The seminar focuses time to pipe installation. From unloading the pipe at the
site of installation to final testing for acceptance, each step in the construction
sequence is reviewed in detail. Correct selection and compaction of the soil support system, for both rigid and flexible pipe, is discussed, along with testing
requirements and correct standards. Soil classification system and soil properties, as related to pipe-soil interaction, are reviewed. Efficient mix design, construction techniques and test procedures for flowable fill will be covered. Case
histories and photos from actual construction sites will illustrate the necessity of
pre-construction investigations, proper construction, safety programs, and
inspection.

Seminar Instructors
TIMOTHY J. MCGRATH is a leading consultant on the design and behavior of buried pipe. As both a researcher and designer Dr. McGrath has
been instrumental in the development of national design standards.
He has consulted worldwide with clients to solve field installation
problems and help get pipelines built as designed. A Principal at the
consulting firm Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Inc. in Waltham, MA, Dr.
McGrath leads the National Cooperative Highway Research Programs
project Thermoplastic Drainage Pipe, Design and Testing, and is currently conducting research for the Minnesota DOT on the response
of shallow buried plastic pipe to live loads. Dr. McGrath helped develop the SIDD design method for reinforced concrete pipe that was
incorporated into AASHTO specifications in the early 1980s, and
developed the computer programs PIPECAR and BOXCAR for the
design of buried concrete pipe and box sections for special applications. Dr. McGrath is active in numerous professional committees,
including ASTM, ASCE, AWWA, and TRB. He received his Ph.D. in
Geotechnical Engineering in 1998, completing a project jointly funded by the FHWA and NSF to evaluate improved methods for designing and installing buried pipe.
AMSTER K. HOWARD, JR. international pipeline installation expert and
instructor on soil classification, earthwork construction control, and
pipe installation, spent over 30 years conducting research on buried
pipe and troubleshooting for pipe installation projects for the Bureau
of Reclamation. At the Bureau, Mr. Howard participated in preparing
specifications, writing installation manuals for pipe ranging in diameter
from 2 inches to 25 feet, and training inspectors. He has been a
keynote speaker for the European Clay Pipe Association and the
Plastic Pipe Institute. His table of E Prime values has been adopted by
AWWA, ASTM, and ASCE for use in the Iowa Formula to calculate the
deflection of buried flexible pipe. He wrote an ASTM standard for
construction practices for plastic pipe and is currently working on a
standard for installing pipe using flowable fill. Mr. Howard is now a
consulting civil engineer in Lakewood, Colorado.
