1 - IDENTIFICATION OF THE MIXTURE AND OF THE COMPANY
IDENTIFICATION OF THE MIXTURE

ARGENTURE ECO or SILVER ECO (code: 13016)

USE OF THE MIXTURE
This solution is used at room temperature, on most substrates, for applying thin or thick silver plating using the selective
brush plating process. Its suitable in many cases for improving surface properties especially friction, electrical or
decorative qualities. It may also be used for local thick surfacing (filling of holes or scratches).
As the brush process is applied locally without immersion of the part, just where it is necessary, only small quantities of
solution are stored or used.

3 - COMPOSITION / INFORMATION ON INGREDIENTS
COMPONENTS OR IMPURITIES CONTRIBUTING TO THE HAZARDS ACCORDING TO EC REGULATION
Substances present in concentrations higher than the minimal level of danger: NO.
Substances present in concentrations lower than the minimal level of danger: NO.
Other substances with the R33 phrase (if 1%) or the R64 phrase (if 1%) or classified as sensitising (if 0.1%): NO.
OTHER SUBSTANCES WITH WORKPLACE EXPOSURE LIMITS: YES, soluble silver salts.
Three silver salts and silver cyanide are EC regulated, all with the N symbol and with the risk phrase R50/53. According to
safety data (Sax), the water-soluble silver compounds are irritating to the skin and mucous membranes. Some
manufacturers or distributors have as well classified EC not regulated salts either as irritant or as able to cause serious
damage to eyes. To take these possible effects into account, by analogy, we consider that the silver salts present in the
mixture could be close to silver nitrate.

Due to the lack of data on the salts really in solution, we consider that they are potentially less dangerous than AgNO3 for
the aquatic environment and classify the mixture with the R51/53 phrase (some manufacturers and distributors do not
apply any classification on this point for some salts and some reports indicate a particular effect of AgNO3 on the
environment).
OTHER INFORMATION: contains also other EC not regulated salts.

11 - TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION
No data are available regarding the mixture. The evaluation of health hazards has been realised thanks to
applicable regulations and bibliographical data.
The absorption of silver depends on the solubility of the silver salt in the considered biologic environment, and of its
granulometry if it is a solid.
Silver is absorbed by various ways: digestive (18% of the ingested quantity is absorbed), pulmonary (close to 90%) and
very weakly cutaneous. Local deposition of silver on the mucous membranes limits the absorption. It is transported bound
to the red corpuscles and globulins. It goes quickly in the liver and the brain and is stored in the reticuloendothelial
system.
The elimination is nearly exclusively fecal (half-life of 1 and 50 days) and very weakly urinary and sudoral (< 8%).

4/5

SKIN, EYE MUCOSA

Irritating. Prolonged absorption of silver salts may cause a greyish pigmentation of the skin and mucous membranes
(argyria) which appears some time after the contact. Once deposited, the pigmentation is permanent, not aesthetic but
not dangerous. To avoid it, wash immediately with water in case of contact.
RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
May cause argyria in case of long-term inhalation of silver salts.
IN CASE OF INGESTION
Silver is reduced and deposits in various tissues of the body. Once deposited, there is no known method by which it can
be eliminated. Avoid the deposition is possible if for example a 1% sodium chloride solution (100-200 mL) is given as
soon as possible. By this way, silver is precipitated in its chloride form. Follow doctors advice.
Possible digestive troubles. It is reported that some soluble silver compounds have caused death.
OCCUPATIONAL DISEASES: not applicable (in FRANCE).
EXPOSURE BIOLOGICAL VALUES
Reference values for the general population: serum silver < 0,5 g/L, silver in total blood < 0,8 g/L, urinary silver < 2
g/L.
Guide values at work: (France (VGF), Germany (BAT, EKA, BLW), USA-ACGIH (BEI), Quebec, Finland (BAL),
Switzerland (VBT)): no reference value- Sample to be taken at any time in the day or week.
Blood and urinary silver analysis may have an interest for the biologic surveillance at work, but are rarely used. Indeed,
even though the urinary and blood concentrations are higher for exposed than for non exposed people, no interrelation
with the exposure intensity has been proven. Silver analysis in blood appears to be more adapted for assessment of the
professional exposure that urinary ones except in case of very high levels.
A survey recovered blood concentrations reaching 23 g/L among asymptomatic people exposed to silver in different
industries.
________________________________________________________________________________________________
12 - ECOLOGICAL INFORMATION
There are no ecological data on the mixture.
Prevent any material from entering drains or waterways or earth.
In a non-dilute state, silver salts are generally classified as very toxic to the aquatic environment, either by EC regulations
or by manufacturers and distributors.
________________________________________________________________________________________________
13 - DISPOSAL CONSIDERATIONS
This product and water used for rinsing must not be thrown away notably because of their silver content. They must be
processed within the firm or destroyed by an approved organization.
