Two of the worlds biggest airtankers are set to form part of
Victorias response to a summer of significant fire risk.
Victoria will be the first state in Australia to use the airtankers a
Hercules and an RJ as part of the states firefighting strikeforce.
The Minister for Emergency Services Jane Garrett said Victoria
is lucky to have one of the largest and most modern airfleets in
Australia to support our firefighters and our communities.
Our firefighters do an amazing job and are well prepared for
what is predicted to be a summer of significant fire risk.
Ms Garrett said Victoria is likely to face a challenging fire season
and communities need to be just as prepared as our firefighters.
The Hercules and the RJ can each hold more than 12,000L of water,
foam or retardant and will be able to reach any fire across the state
within one hour of being dispatched from their base in Avalon.
They will boost Victorias firefighting airfleet to 46 planes and
helicopters.
Other aircraft strategically placed around the state include:
Two Orange Erickson Aircranes Delilah and Malcolm based at
Essendon and Ballarat.
Two Sikorsky s61 helicopters based at Colac and Mansfield.

Testing by the Blackwood

A community working

it will be absolutely vital if

Last year:
The heatwave Victoria experienced from Monday 13 January to Saturday 18 January
2014 saw unprecedented levels of demand for ambulance services across the state,
particularly in Melbourne. A total of 2506 ambulance triple zero calls on the Thursday,
the second highest number of ambulance calls ever answered by Emergency Services
Telecommunications Authority. Cardiac arrests also saw a signicant spike. Ambulance
Victoria was called to 77 suspected cardiac arrests on Friday alone the usual number is
about 12 a day. Unfortunately there were also a high number of calls for children locked in
cars during the extreme temperatures.

Dear Editor,
As the end of the year approaches, its common for us
to reflect on the year thats
been and what lies ahead in
2015.
In many respects 2014 has
been a testing year. The
deaths of Robin Williams
and Charlotte Dawson, for
example, saw an outpouring of community feeling
and a never-before-seen
willingness to talk openly
about depression, anxiety
and suicide. Record numbers of people contacted
beyondblues support service for help or advice. As
a community, the penny
seems to have dropped that
depression doesnt discriminate. More recent events in
Sydney, Cairns and overseas
may have tested our trust
in our fellow human beings, but in many ways have
brought us closer together.
At times like this its even
more important that we
make the time for the people
and activities that bring us
joy, rekindle friendships, put
aside technology and connect with each other. And
stand up to intolerance of
difference, in whatever form
with the writers full name, address and phone number (name and suburb for publication
only) and be limited to 300 words. Letters to be received via fax, post or email (preferred
option). The Editor has the right to limit the amount of words in each letter received and
published letters are at the discretion of the Editor.

Dear Editor,
Is Diesel the New Green
Fuel?
Are Climatists giving a
green tick to diesel power?Ten thousand professional climate crusaders recently attended yet another
Climate Carnival in Lima,
Peru. Did they use green
power to minimise their carbon footprint? No way; massive diesel generators were
trucked in on diesel-powered lorries because the local hydro/solar power could
not cope. The delegates were
also moved between hotels and the venue in more
than 300 diesel buses few
bothered to walk or ride bicycles. In sunny Spain, the
government solar subsidies
were so generous that some
entrepreneurs managed to
produce solar energy for
24 hours per day. However,
inspectors discovered that
diesel generators were being operated at night, thus
producing great profits in
selling solar energy to the
grid.Then in go-green,
vote-blue Britain, wind
power is proving so erratic
that thousands of reliable
diesel generators are being
installed by utilities and
businesses to maintain power when the grid becomes
unstable.Finally we have
people who disconnect from
the grid, aiming to become
independent by generating
their own power from small
solar and wind installations.
After the first long spell of
cloudy windless weather,
most turn to a reliable ondemand
diesel
backup
generator to keep the fridge
running and the lights on.It
seems that diesel is the new
green fuel. In some bitter
winter, when real blackouts
hit UK or Europe, maybe
clean green coal will be
re-discovered and cranked
up again.

Situated only minutes from Ballarat, in the cosy township of Bungaree, is this luxury home on 1.44
hectares (3.6 acres). It comes complete with two large sheds of 18x9 and 24x12 respectively, and
would be ideal for trucks, cranes, machinery or storage and a variety of other uses. Rear access
to the block and shedding is also a feature. Close to the freeway entrance, and on the Melbourne
side, the location is ideal. The home is luxuriously appointed for the family, with space galore
and an alfresco entertaining area with its own fireplace and built in BBQ that needs to be seen to
be appreciated. With 3 living areas and 4 bedrooms plus a study, this spacious home has it all.
Climate control throughout, along with a wood combustion heater give you all the options to stay
warm in winter and cool in summer. Outside the garden is spectacularly maintained and there is
an in-ground trampoline, cubby house and plenty of space run and play. Serviced with both town
water and a bore, the property has loads of features and represents an opportunity that is rare
indeed. Price $880,000.

QUICK PUZZLE
ARIESMarch 21-April 20
A loved one seems almost too easy to please, but theres
no cause for alarm. A friend shares some good news that
involves you indirectly. Any friction among workmates
should end abruptly.
TAURUSApril 21-May 22
Some frustrating delays are offset by a productive cycle.
Romance shows its sentimental side this week. Self
improvement plans are highlighted.
GEMINIMay 23-June 21
Guard words carefully. Its tempting to divulge information to the wrong parties. Best friends now are of another
generation and an acquaintance who is trying to be helpful
may be a little too helpful.

CANCERJune 22-July 22
Expect to meet several quite different people this week.
Best allies now are of the opposite sex. A loved one may
misinterpret your intentions. Home improvements may
be delayed for a little longer.
LEOJuly 23-August 22
Small mixups are dotted through the week. Travel ideas
may be developing into realities. In romance, a less conservative approach may appeal to your other half.
VIRGOAugust 23-September 22
Travel is indicated, with the accent on spontaneity. A
family member may be surprisingly stubborn, then suddenly co-operative. The weekend includes touches of
glamour, humour and confusion.
LIBRASeptember 23-October 22
Distractions can put you behind schedule. You may be
re-shuffling plans after the weekend. Your ideas will benefit from refinement. Discoveries around the house could
solve an on going mystery.

SAGITTARIUSNovember 22-December 22
Romancewise, this can be an upbeat week. The key is to
make most of all situations. Make an added attempt to
simplify your life.
CAPRICORNDecember 23-January 20
Friendships generally are spotlighted, with well established relationships becoming even more important.
Detail to work should not be ignored, especially where
numbers and dates are involved.
AQUARIUSJanuary 21-February 19
There may be a dip in self confidence, but by the weekend you find yourself responding to challenges with renewed zeal. Later in the week could find you involved in
a teaching role.
PISCESFebruary 20-March 20
This is a favourable week for assigning projects to others
and assessing your own future prospects. A friend may
introduce you to a new hobby that is interesting but unexpectedly costly.
BIRTHDAY THIS WEEK
When you give your attention to something, you give your
all - until another interest comes your way. This trait may
prove frustrating to friends, but it keeps you young.
Personal relationships and renewed compliments are
spotlighted. Educational interests continue to expand.
