Guidelines to the Authors of articles/papers

1. SOCIAL GLANCE publishes original research articles, review papers, conceptual

framework, analytical and simulation models, case studies, empirical research, technical
notes, books reviews as well as organizational practices in Humanities and Social
Sciences. The Editor invites articles of social significance from scholars in the subject
areas such as Sociology, History, Psychology, Social Work, Anthropology, Political
Science, Economics, Commerce, Management Studies, Education, Entrepreneurship
Development, Ethics, Literature, etc.
2. The research article/paper should not exceed 8,000 words i.e. about 12-15 pages in A4
size paper. It must be typed in single space in MS- Word format in 12 point Times New
Roman font. It should be submitted in duplicate and the first page should carry only the
title of the paper, author(s) name(s), designation(s), official address, phone/fax numbers
and e-mail addresses.
3. An abstract not exceeding 150 words must accompany the article and it should contain 45 key words.
4. Within the text, adopt the author-year method of citation minus the comma, for example,
(Durkheim 1895). If more than one work of an author is cited, separate the years of
publication with a comma (Bottomore 1978, 1984). Separate the page numbers of
citations by a colon (Bourdieu 1977:264) and hyphenate the inclusive numbers (Bourdieu
1977: 264-65). When more than one author is cited, the entries should be chronological
with works of different authors separated by a semicolon (Coser 1956; Cott 1977; Fenton
1980).
For co-authored works, cite both names (Lebaron and Mauger 2001); for works authored
by three or more authors, use et al. after the first name (Turner et al. 2002). If a citation
is repeated within a paragraph without intervening citations, use ibid., instead of
repeating the authors name again, and provide the relevant page number/s (ibid.:32). If
gazetteers, reports and works of governmental organizations and other institutions are
cited, mention the name of the organization/ institution sponsoring the publication in the
citation, fully spelt out at its first occurrence (Government of India 2003), and use its
abbreviation/ acronym in subsequent citations (GOI 2003). No stops after abbreviations
(USA, UK). Use stops after initials (C.H.Saint-Simon).
5. The bibliographical details of all works cited in the text should be presented
alphabetically at the end of the article under References in sequence using the APA
format.
6. The following style of reference should be strictly followed:
(a) Article: the family/surname name of the author followed by commas and his initial,
the year of the publication, title of the article (within single inverted commas), the
name of the journal (italicized), and the volume number, the issue number, and the
beginning and ending page numbers.

(b) Book: the family/surname name of the author followed by commas and his initial, the
year of publication, title of the book (italicized), place of publication, and the name of
the publication.
(c) Chapter in an edited work or compilation: the name(s) of the author(s), the year of
publication, title of the chapter (within single inverted commas), the names of the
editors/ compilers, title of the book (italicized), place of publication, and the name of
the publisher, the beginning and ending page numbers of the chapter.
(d) Institution/Government Report: Full name of the institution/ministry, year of
publication, place of publication.
(e) On-line document: the family/surname name of the author followed by commas and
his initial, year of publication, title of the paper, website and date of retrieval.
7. Social Glance follows the endnote pattern: Serialize all explanatory notes in the sequence
in which they are referred to in the text (using numbered superscripts) and place them at
the end of the text under Notes, but before References. Endnotes must not be used for
bibliographical purposes.
8. Tables, charts, maps, figures, etc. are to be placed centrally and separately at the end of
the article. Number these serially, with appropriate titles/captions. Refer to them in the
text by their number-Table 5, Figure 2, Map 1, etc. - and not by their location- for
example, the above table, the figure below, etc.
9. Cite sentences or words taken from other works with single quotation mark; use double
quotation marks only within quotations. Separate quotations exceeding fifty words from
the text and indent then on the left. Unless the entire sentence is part of the quotation, the
punctuation must remain outside the quotation marks.
10. Use British English spelling throughout the manuscript uniformly (labour, not labour;
programme, not program). Authors have latitude as regards italicisation, but italicisation
needs to be consistent in the article.
11. Write numerals between one and ninety-nine in words, and 100 and above in figures.
However, the followings are to be in figures only: distance: 3 km; age: 32 years old;
percentage: 64 per cent; and years: 1990s.
12. The page numbers should be at the centre of the bottom of every page. All headings must
be bold-faced, aligned left and fully capitalized. Authors must leave one line before each
heading.
13. Authors are requested to provide on a separate sheet their name, designation, official
address and e-mail ID. Only articles which have not been published earlier or which are
not being considered for publication elsewhere will be entertained. A declaration to this
effect must be included in the covering letter.
14. All articles will be reviewed by three members of peer review committee. Articles/papers
recommended by the referees alone will be published in the Journal after appropriate
editing.

15. Acceptance of a manuscript for publication in the Journal shall automatically mean
transfer of copyright to the editor. The Editorial Board takes no responsibility for the fact
or the opinion expressed in the article, it rests entirely with the author of the article/paper.
16. If an article is found to be plagiarized, it will be the sole responsibility of the contributor
to face legal action, if any.
17. Address all editorial correspondence to:
Editor, SOCIAL GLANCE, LISSTAR, JS-14, Loyola College, Chennai-600034.

Caution: A manuscript sent for publication may be rejected due to the following reasons.
1. It reports a single small or incomplete experiment that makes uncertain contribution to
new knowledge or understanding.
2. The data are statistically insignificant and /or do not support the claims being made.
3. It is written poorly without references and is incomprehensible.
Note: If the articles/papers sent to Social Glance do not follow these guidelines, it will be
rejected.
