POSTER PROJECT

100-point assignment
Pick Your Topic
Go to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) and select your top three choices for a sleep
disorder topic. Notice you can click on the individual topic (e.g. Leg Cramps) for more information.
Here is the url:
http://yoursleep.aasmnet.org/Disorders.aspx
Submit Your Topic Choices
Go to Laulima, Assignments, Poster Topic and enter your 3 topics in order of preference in your
assignment window. I will assign your topics based on your preference and timing in which I receive
them. The earlier you submit, the more likely you will get your first choice. The only reason you will
not get your first choice is if another student has submitted that topic before I received yours.
Topic due date stated on Laulima Assignments, Poster Topic.
If I do not receive your topic before the due date, you will lose 20 points on the assignment (80 points
max rather than 100) and I will assign your topic to you.
If you would like to begin working on your topic and I have not confirmed your choice with you (but you
have submitted it on Laulima), please email to me and I will get right back to you (except during spring
break).
Advice
When putting this together, keep in mind how you are going to be using it. Create something you would
want to walk up to and learn more about. Make the text brief and large enough that it is a pleasure to
read. Include graphics that truly add something to your poster. Have fun with this and make it your own
style, your own creation. You do not have to follow someone elses formal visual format. You will be
standing beside this in the cafeteria while community members approach and ask you about it. Try to
create it so you can enjoy your time while you are also teaching people about something that you think is
cool.
Poster Session
You will be presenting this to each other and the campus community, in the cafeteria, on the date stated in
your class schedule, during the 50 minutes of class time.

Material
Tri-fold poster board can be purchased somewhere like Longs or Office Depot (or perhaps the
bookstore). You can also make our own from cutting a cardboard box and flattening and bending it so it
will stand-up alonemany students have done this and it works fine (and is free!).
Dimensions of board: Approximately 24-36 high X 36-48 wide (does not have to be exact).
Resources
On Laulima, in Resources, there is a document called Sleep and Health Websites that you may find
helpful.
Plagiarism
Minus fifty points if you copy large passages of someone elses words. If I see text that does not look
original, I will write it down and search for it. You will receive a maximum of 50 out of 100 (F grade) for
this project. Please use your own words unless you are including a small quote (one or two sentences)
with a proper citation.
Using information and graphics from the internet
You may use graphics and short quotes from the internet, or other references, as long as they are properly
cited. See below on citing information.
Here is a helpful website for getting formats for citing work from various sources:

Here is an example of how to make a citation for using an image of an art piece from a website:

Excused Absence
If you have an excused absence, such as a documented medical emergency, the day of the poster session,
your total points will be reduced, but you can arrange to present your poster to some of my colleagues and
me at a later date for partial credit.
