Abstract
This paper presents a Balanced Current Conveyor based
Multifunction filter. The proposed circuit can simultaneously
realize low pass (LP), high pass (HP), band pass (BP), and
band reject (BR) filter responses with no need to impose
component choice. The circuit employs two balanced output
current conveyors, four resistors and two grounded capacitors.
The proposed arrangement has only one output terminal and
the number of input terminals may be used. The performance
of the proposed filter is tested using PSPICE simulation
program, and the simulation results agree well with the
theoretical analysis.

2.1. Basic concept of Current Conveyor

The basic building block of the proposed circuit is a
Balanced Output Current Conveyor. A balanced output
CCII is a four terminal device, which is obtained with the
combination of CCII+ and CCII-. This balanced output
current conveyor, represented symbolically by Figure 1.

1. INTRODUCTION
The current conveyor becomes very attractive in the active
filter design due to the important advantages that currentmode operation has over the conventional voltage-mode
operation .Current-mode circuits have been receiving
considerable attention owing to their potential advantages
such as wider bandwidth, greater linearity, higher slew
rate, wider dynamic range, simple circuitry, and low
power consumption [1]-[2] compared to voltage-mode
circuits. Active filters are widely used in electronic
systems, such as telecommunications, radar, consumer
electronics, instrumentation systems, and military
ordnance [3]-[4].
From different combinations of
injection of input voltage signals, voltage-mode low pass,
high pass, band pass and notch filters can be obtained
without changing the circuit topology. In 1999 Chang and
Lee [4] proposed voltage mode low-pass, high-pass and
bandpass filter with single input and three outputs
employing only current conveyors, two grounded
capacitors and three resistors. Toker et. al. [5] realized
high output impedance transadmittance type continuous
time multifunction filter (low-pass, high-pass and bandpass) employing three positive type current conveyor and
five passive components. The circuit proposes high output
impedance. Most of these circuits which appeared in the
previous proposals realize three basic filter responses low
pass, high pass and band pass only. Notch filter cannot be
realized by these configurations. This paper presents a
universal voltage mode filter employing two balanced
output second generation current conveyors (CCII).The
proposed circuit can simultaneously realize low pass (LP),
high pass (HP), band pass (BP), and band reject (BR)
filter responses by selecting appropriate input terminals of
the circuit.

The terminal characteristics are written as:
(a) The terminal X is a low input impedance node. The
terminal Y has an infinite impedance and therefore,
Iy = 0
(1)
(b) The voltage at the terminals X (Vx) and Y (Vy) are
same, therefore Vx = Vy
(2)
(c) The high impedance output node Z has the same
current as Ix and therefore Iz = Ix i.e. IZ = IX &
IZ- = -IX

2.1. Designing of Universal Voltage Mode Filter Using
Balanced Output CCII
The proposed voltage mode multifunction filter circuit
employs two balanced output second generation current
conveyors (CCII), four resistors and two grounded
capacitors as shown in Figure 2. The circuit has one
output terminal and four input terminals.

3. RESULTS & DISCUSSIONS

The balanced current conveyor in the proposed circuit is
realized by the commercially available AD844AN IC and
the operational transconductance amplifier (OTA)
LM13700. AD844AN IC in open-loop mode it acts as
CCII+. For the realization of CCII-, the output of the
AD844AN IC is fed to LM13700. The bias current of the
LM13700 and load impedance at the input terminal of
OTA is adjusted such that output current of OTA is in out
of phase with the output current of the AD844AN IC.

Figure 3 displays the simulation result for the proposed

filter which matches with the designed specifications. The
circuit is designed for wO = 1.4105 rad/Sec and Q
=14.14 by considering R1 = R4 = R6 = 10k, C2 = C5 =
1 nF and R3 = 100k. The theoretical results are verified
to match with simulation results.

The transfer function of the circuit is given in Equation

(4). By using Equation (4) four filters responses low-pass,
high-pass, band-pass & band reject can be realized at the
single output terminal by selecting the proper input
terminals as shown in Table 1

4. CONCLUSIONS

Since all the filter transfer functions have same

characteristics equations, the cutoff/central frequency and
the quality factor of all the filters are same, and are
respectively given by Equation 5& 6.

Q R3

R1 R6
R1 R4 R6 C 2 C 5
C 2 ( R1 R6 )
R1 R4 R6 C 5

(6)

From the above equations it is clear that using resistance

R3 the quality factor of the filter can be changed without
affecting the cutoff/central frequency.

This paper proposed a new universal filter (low-pass,

high-pass, band-pass and band reject filters) realization
using current conveyor by employing minimum active and
passive components . The circuit is realized by using two
current conveyors, four resistors and two grounded
capacitors. Further, it is suitable for IC fabrication as it
employs grounded capacitor. The performance of the
proposed filter is tested using PSPICE simulation
program, and the simulation results agree well with the
theoretical analysis.
