DISTRICT ROTARACT REPRESENTATIVE MESSAGE

Happy New Year District 7030!
We have entered a new year which brings with it new opportunities
and possibilities. It presents us with the opportunity to make changes
to our lives as we seek to be better individuals. The New Year also
brought with it the start of the third quarter. This means that half of the
year has already past and clubs should look at refocusing their efforts
to ensure that they accomplish the plans set out at the beginning of the
Rotaract year.
In December I visited the Rotaract Clubs in Barbados and met with the
District Conference Committee.
The Conference Committee is
working hard to ensure that the 29th Annual Rotaract District 7030
Conference is productive, enjoyable and an overall success. All
Rotaractors are reminded to register for this annual event. This year
will see us having a four-day conference for the first time. There will also be new events added to the
weekend of activities and some surprises in store for all participants.

Productive meetings were also held with the Rotaract Clubs of Barbados West, South Barbados and
UWI Cave Hill. I was fortunate to fellowship with members of the Rotaract Club of Barbados West
when I attend their Pinning and Induction Ceremony of new Directors and members. I was also
impressed to hear all that is being done by the Rotaract Club of South Barbados and the adoption of a
campus bench by the Rotaract Club of UWI Cave Hill among other projects. My visit would not have
been complete without a visit to one of Barbados many breath-taking beaches, which was filled with
laughter and great fellowship. The visit culminated at the Rotary Club of Barbados annual Carols by

Candle Light event, which had a massive turnout and raised funds and collected presents for
children in need.

In the month of January I will be visiting four more clubs. In addition to addressing issues within
clubs, visits will also focus on reviewing projects executed and identifying ways to successfully
achieved proposed plans. During this quarter the District Executive will also invite clubs to nominate
individuals to hold the position of District Rotaract Representative Nominee for the 2015-2016 Rotaract
year. This individual will assume leadership of the District during the period 2017-2018. Although
this seems like a long time away, we must be reminded that each term passes very quickly and
advance planning will make the tenure of future DRRs much easier and more successful. Clubs will
also be invited to bid to host our 2015 District Leadership Training and the 30th Annual Rotaract
District 7030 Conference.
As we enter this third quarter, clubs are reminded to submit their quarterly reports. Those
participating in District projects are also reminded to submit their proposals and reports upon
completion. This year at District Conference we intend to use creative ways to showcase the
excellent work clubs have been doing throughout the year and clubs are encouraged to submit
reports in an effort to facilitate this. We applaud your efforts to share the work you are doing though
your respective Facebook profiles and other social media. However as a District, we would also like
to have records of all the projects successfully executed. You are also encouraged to submit articles
to the monthly newsletter as it can also be used in your promotional efforts to potential sponsors and
in sharing Rotaract to others.
A new year can be seen as a clean slate to start over and build on past successes. I encourage clubs,
especially those experiencing challenges, to use this new year as a new beginning. Do not dwell on
the challenges faced in 2014 but look towards 2015 as an opportunity to improve. Have a productive
year everyone!
Yours in Rotaract,
Vanessa Boyce

CLUB STORIES

ROTARACT CLUB OF ARIMA

Rotaract Club of Arima hosts Christmas Children's Party for members of the
Santa Rosa-Pinto Road and St Joseph Police Youth Clubs and House of Grace
Children's Home!
With the view towards spreading holiday cheer among the youth in its community of Arima and
environs, the Rotaract Club of Arima hosted its 2nd Annual Childrens Christmas Party at the Santa
Rosa Government Primary School on Saturday 13 th December 2014. This year, at least sixty (60)
children were in attendance Members of the Santa Rosa/Pinto Road Police Youth Club, St. Joseph
Youth Club and House of Grace Childrens Home - along with their chaperons.

The Rotaractors were on hand to serve food, drinks and snacks for those in attendance. Also, the
children were able to enjoy the bouncy castle and face painting which were made fully available to
them on the day and were treated to snack bags and early Christmas gifts.

The children and their chaperons enjoyed themselves and the Membership of the Rotaract Club of
Arima enjoyed hosting them for the day!

Rotaract Club of Arima lends support to Rotaract Club of St. Augustine West in
joint Christmas hamper drive in aid of the Toco Secondary School Student
Welfare Committee!
In an effort to help the less fortunate students in its community, the Toco Secondary School Student
Welfare Committee embarked upon a Food Drive for the 2014 Christmas Season. This initiative was
intended to collect non-perishable food items, toiletries and/or personal care products to create at
least ten (10) hampers for distribution to the students at the end of the school term.

A request for assistance was made with the aim towards realizing this initiative and the Rotaract Clubs
of St. Augustine West and Arima answered the call. For its part, the Membership of the Rotaract Club
of Arima was able to procure several items of foodstuffs to be able to contribute two (2) large
hampers. Through the combined efforts of both Clubs and other well-meaning citizens, twelve (12)
hampers were distributed on the last week of the school term ending Friday 12th December 2014.

This joint effort surely aided in worthwhile outreach to people who were in need and contributed
towards the goals of raising awareness with respect to Rotaracts presence within the national
community and strengthening the bond between both Rotaract Clubs.

ROTARACT CLUB OF F.R.E.S.H.

Tap yu Bari Chikungunya project
To fight the Chikungunya virus, the Rotaract Club of F.R.E.S.H. together with B.O.G. (department of
public health) organized the Tap yu Bari (meaning: close your barrels) project on Saturday
November 29 at Domburg in district Wanica. The aim of this project was to inform the residents about
Chikungunya and to clear the breeding places of the mosquitos by covering open water reservoirs
with fine netting. A part of Domburg has no access to water, so the people are forced to store
rainwater in barrels. Clean water is a potential breeding place for the Aedes Aegypti mosquito.

With a group of 20, we set out to Domburg where the representative of B.O.G. gave field instructions
and divided us into 2 groups. From 8.00 am until noon, we inspected about 30 homes, informed
occupants, covered open water reservoirs and also removed all water from open containers to
prevent the existence of mosquito breeding places.
Regardless the decrease of Chikungunya cases in Suriname, the risk of getting this virus is still high;
especially in areas where people arent following the safety procedures. Through an educational film
of this project, shown on national television, the public health department and the Rotaract Club of
F.R.E.S.H. strongly advise the Surinamese community to cover up their water reservoirs at all times to
prevent breeding places.

World Childrens Day: Sports & Games

Is everybody aware of the Convention on the Rights of the Child??? Well, on 20 November 2014 we
marked the 25th anniversary of this Convention consisting of 42 rights of the child, which should
change the way children are viewed and treated.

With regard to this all, the International Service of Rotaract Club of F.R.E.S.H. wanted to pay more
attention to article 31 of the Convention: the Right to Play & Recreational Activities. So on 22
November 2014 we initiated a World Childrens Day: Sports & Games with Child Center Lelindaal
& Congregation Wisma Asih (a total of 60 children, ages 4 to18).
Through a motivational talk, childrens rights workers taught the kids what this Convention includes,
especially the right to play & recreational activities. As a motivation for kids, some were asked to tell
what kind of sport they do and to show their medals. Afterwards the kids were asked to come outside
on the yard, where Zumbathon instructors waited for them to Zumba. After Zumba the kids got
pepped up with a popsicle and continued with other sports & games activities. At the end they
enjoyed a delicious lunch and received various sport articles.
Every year the Rotaract Club of F.R.E.S.H. will give special attention to a different type of rights of the
child.

ROTARACT CLUB OF GENESIS

Rotaract Club Genesis sells delicious BBQ
On October 10th the Rotaract Club of Genesis organized their BBQ sale. This sale was held at Jack
Tours and Travel Service from 15.00 p.m. till 22.30 p.m.

We started the day with preparing the chicken on the grill. Our food was ordered in advance by
selling tokens to our friends, family and Rotarians.

Our customers started picking up their food at 18.00 p.m. We sold fries with the BBQ, sate {meat on
stick} and potato salad and vegetable salad. Subisco International sponsored a fries-mobile. This is a
truck specially made for frying potato`s. While BBQ-ing, we had a lot of fun together. At some
moments it became very busy, because we had a lot of customers in front. But together we helped all
the customers and they went satisfied. The next day we got a lot of compliments from customers that
the food was very delicious. Obviously, because all the food was made by our great chefs from
Genesis. At this project 13 Rotaractors, 2 prospective members, 2 honorary members and 2 guests
participated. Our main goal was to raise money for our club fund. Once again we succeeded at this
goal.

Genesis hosts its Professional Development training

On the 18th of October, the Rotaract Club of Genesis held its second Professional Development
training.
This training was provided by Rotarian Reina Kolf of Rotary Paramaribo Central who also is our
Director,New Generation. The purpose of this training was to create a mission and vision, what we as
young professionals want to achieve, whether it is in the club or at work. Rotarian Kolf talked about
S.W.O.T. That means Strenghts, Weakness, Oppertunities and Threats. We put this all together within
groups.

There were some points that we had to consider which occur within the club. We had to put down
some of our strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats within the club and how we would
improve these points.

We have learnt from the training that everyone has their own abilities and that is a main point for the
club, because we can bring our club to a higher level. This is a lesson to our members so that we can
achieve our goals.

ROTARACT CLUB OF POINTE-A-PITRE

Donation to the Association Madrprore

On Tuesday, November 18th, the Rotaract Club of Pointe-Pitre was honoured to make a donation to the
association Madrprore 971, who fights against sickle
cell disease.

During the past Rotaract year 2013-2014, the Rotaract

club of Pointe--Pitre had as a main objective to support
the fight against sickle cell disease. As a consequence a
lot of our project went in favour of this noble cause, which
naturally affects a significant part of Guadeloupe
population.
Last June, during our Annual Gala , the Club organized a
fundraising which had a great success, since indeed we
collected 3000 that we are handing over today to the
association. This donation will be used to buy equipment
suitable for sikcle-cell patients follow-up but also to organize a Christmas event for the children.
Our choice went to Madrepore 971, because this association was created by healthcare professionals,
wih the following objectives:

Organize projects and training allowing a better knowledge of sickle cell disease in
Guadeloupe.
Support educational projects and care of patients in the different departments dealing with
sickle cell disease in Public Hospital of Pointe--Pitre
Improve on reception of patients and their family, in collaboration with patient associations.

ROTARACT CLUB OF PORT OF SPAIN WEST

How Do You Interact With The Future?
Most clubs in District 7030 are faced with a mass exodus of members within the next two years. This
exodus is driving clubs to prepare for the future with recruitment drives and continuation plans. Yes,
we should go the public whether in schools, places of work or even within our own personal networks
to recruit new Rotaractors, but we should keep in mind that within our own Rotary family is the future
of Rotaract: The Interact Clubs.
In recent years our club has strengthened its relationship with the Interact Club of Port of Spain West.
The Interactors have attended our events and have participated in our projects. Last year our New
Generations Project was built around getting the Interactors ready for the future with a seminar on
rsum writing and job hunting. We have also participated in their projects, most recently the Feed
the Needy tin drive.
By participating in each others projects and events, we have fostered a camaraderie which not only
ensures the future of our Rotaract Club but also makes their transition into Rotaract easier.
Build your relationship with your Interact Club and secure your clubs future.

ROTARACT CLUB OF SANGRE GRANDE CENTRAL

The Rotaract-Rotary Health Clinic & Cultural Expo
On Sunday, November 23rd, 2014, the Rotaract Club of Sangre Grande Central (RCSGC)
together with the Rotary Club of Sangre Grande and other Rotaract clubs of District 7030 executed the
Rotaract-Rotary Health Clinic & Cultural Expo at the Matura Government Primary School in East
Trinidad. The joint Community and International Service project was one of the activities conducted
during the recently concluded District 7030 Leadership Training.
The Health Clinic featured basic medical screenings for diabetes, hypertension and
cholesterol, BMI calculations and nutrition all conducted by members of the Health Education Unit
and the Health Assessment Unit of the Eastern Regional Health Authority (ERHA). A team from
Ferreiras Optical Limited were also on hand to facilitate vision screenings. Additionally, free blood
glucose testing kits were distributed courtesy J.T Rapid Diaognostic Ltd, personal care samples from
Oscar Francois Limited and daily supplemental Pharmaceutical samples from Ultra Pharm were
distributed on the day.

For the Cultural Expo, Rotaractors from Guyana, Suriname, Barbados,

Grenada, Dominica, St. Lucia, Guadeloupe, Antigua & Barbuda, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Tortola,
and The Bahamas presented aspects of their culture through the use of maps, music, clothing, food,
literature, national emblems, and quizzes. There were also booths set up by the Rotaract Clubs of St.
Augustine West, Piarco (UWI) and Maraval to highlight the work done by their respective clubs, and
a Painted Faces stations (wo)manned by President Malissa of RC St. Augustine.

A Time for Giving & Bringing Good Cheer!

For the 2014 Christmas season, the Rotaract Club of Sangre Grande Central engaged in two
Community Service projects aimed at giving back and spreading the spirit of Christmas.
The first project involved members assisting our sponsor Rotary club with its 9 th Annual
Senior Citizens Christmas Luncheon on Sunday, December 4 th, 2014. The club donated juices,
distributed Christmas treat bags with supplements donated by Ultra Pharm Ltd. and snacks, and gave
out blood sugar testing monitors donated by JT Rapid Ltd.

The second activity saw the continuation of the clubs annual Christmas hamper distribution to
the less fortunate. Each member sourced a family in need, and contributed items to the hampers. A
total of ten hampers, consisting of sugar, flour, rice, canned foods, Trinidad Fruit Cake etc. were
handed out.
Our annual Christmas Dinner and Secret Santa Gift Exchange were held at the Port Restaurant
in Port of Spain. Members were treated to an impressive buffet of Christmas themed dinner items and
desserts. Gifts, laughter, and a mandatory photo shoot followed. It was yet another successful club
service activity.

ROTARACT CLUB OF ST. LUCIA

Bringing Christmas Cheer to the Dunnottar Special Needs School

Bringing Christmas Cheer to Dunnottar is an initiative aimed at spreading joy at Christmas to our
long-time friends at Dunnottar. The club donated items which were used in party bags for the
students. On December 9th 2014, members and guests arrived at the school and aided in distributing
snacks and drinks and in preparing lunch for the students. Later on the students were rounded up so
that we could serenade them with our sweet voices by singing carols. This quickly turned into a
karaoke and sing-along session as the students overpowered us with their enthusiasm and began
making request for songs.

We ended the singing session on a high, with the last song being Santa Claus is coming to town' and
surprised them with our very own Santa Claus. The air was filled with screams and shouts as some
children were overjoyed and intrigued, while others were afraid and ran to hide. Santa along with his
helpers began spreading the cheer and presented every student with a Christmas gift. The children
were all excited.

Donation to St. Lucys Home

This project is aimed at sharing the spirit of
Christmas with the elderly persons at a St.
Lucys home. Rotaractors will present the home
with a donation to assist in the daily running
and spend time socialising, entertaining and
engaging the elderly, by singing carols and
presenting them with warm Christmas cards.
Members and Guests were of the RCSL
presented a representative from the home with
the donation of food items, toiletries and
cleaning
supplies.
The
representative
expressed immense gratitude for the donation
and thanked the club for their support.

After the presentation, we proceeded to spread Christmas cheer by singing Christmas carols to the
elderly. With the choir coordinator PP Samara, we began to serenade the residents around the home
with our harmonious voices singing some local and traditional carols.
One of the elderly followed us around singing along while some bobbed their heads to the melodious
tunes. After carolling we proceeded to interact with the residents of the home and wished them a
joyous Christmas.

ROTARACT CLUB OF UWI CAVE HILL

DRR Visits the Rotaract Clubs of Barbados
Ms.
Vanessa
Boyce,
District
Rotaract
Representative, met with the Rotaract Club of
UWI, Cave Hill, while visiting Rotaract Clubs in
Barbados. This occurred on the weekend of the
6th of December.
Due to the visit coinciding with the Universitys
exam period, the meeting was in the style of a
board meeting. Nonetheless, the session proved
profitable as a cross section of things were
discussed, including but not limited to, the
current membership of the club, relationship
with Rotary, projects and the way forward for the Club. The eagerly anticipated District Conference
was also discussed.
The meeting was symbolic of the continuity and campus appeal of the club as most executive
members are new, joining only last year, with no experience of the club at the District level. DRR
Vanessa Boyce gave great advice to members of the executive inclusive of suggestions to improve
the club. The DRRs visit culminated with photo moment at the Rotaract Sponsored bench on the UWI,
Cave Hill campus.
The Rotaract Club at UWI, Cave Hill sincerely thanks Ms. Vanessa Boyce for visiting with us. It was
greatly appreciated and was indeed beneficial. We look forward to seeing you and the entire district
committee back in Barbados in a couple months for the Conference!!
