1 INTRODUCTION
Infrastructure Development Consultancy (IDC) in association with Ground
Engineering Solutions (GES) has been instructed by HBK Contracting Co.
W.L.L. (HBK) to prepare a method statement for pump test to be carried
out at Excavation Pit - Evacuation Shaft 4 for Green Line Underground
Project.
The report provides the general requirements for a pump test and
procedures to be adopted.
No specifications have been provided for the pump test by the ultimate
Employer.

2 SCOPE OF WORK
A summary of tasks to be performed are outlined below:

Construction of five boreholes to depths of about 50 m below the

existing ground level.

The pump test wells are to be used as dewatering deep wells for
the excavation and therefore they will all be cased with gravel
screen between the casing and the well wall.

Performing step drawdown test.

Performing constant rate discharge test.

Performing recovery test.

Water sampling and monitoring boreholes testing of chemical

and physical parameters.

3 WELLS
The wells will be those to be used for the temporary dewatering
system and are at 20.0 m intervals.
The wells are 800 mm and the temporary casings 500 mm in diameter.
Well layout and details are shown in figures attached.

4 PUMPING TEST
4.1

General
One pumping test will be carried out in accordance to BS EN ISO
22282-4:2012.
Before the start of pumping test, initial water level will be measured
with reference points to be determined and fixed for basis of
measurement.

4.2

Step Drawdown Test

The well will be tested using a submersible pump with a capacity of
not less than 20 l/s fitted with a non-return valve at the intake end, a
suitable rise main fitted with a control valve for discharge control will
be used. The pumping rate will be governed by the safe yield of the
well. It is estimated to have a safe yield of 40 m 3/hr and will be
divided with five stages of discharge rate 10 m 3/hr, 20 m3/hr, 30
m3/hr, 40 m3/hr and the last stage up to maximum yield of the well
or of the pump capacity. The discharge rate will be measured by
using a flow meter and also a known volume container. The water
level will be measured by electrical dip meter. The duration of every
step will be one hour after the end of the final step. The pump will
then be turned off and water recovery will be measured by electrical
water level indicator. The measurements will be taken in the
pumping well as well as the observation wells.

4.3

Constant Discharge Test and Recovery

A constant rate pumping test will be performed in well and water
level measurement will be made for all observation wells and also
the pumping well. Electrical water level indicator will be used for
water level monitoring.
The pumping rate will be not less than 40 m3/hr or as estimated from
step test for maximum yield of the well whichever is greater.
The duration of the pumping test will be five days and the pumping
rate shall be maintained constant through the test period.
The discharge rate will be measured using flow meter and a known
volume container, the frequency of measuring the pumping rate will
be every one hour for the first 10 hours and twice a day for the rest
of the time.

The well discharge will be fitted with suitable control valve and
enough hose to direct the discharged water 150 meter away from
the pumping and observation wells. The submersible pump shall be
equipped with a non-return valve.
After three days of test another two days or initial static water level
of recovery test will be performed to monitor the water level by
automatic data logger and also manually by using water level
indicator the frequency of measuring as being used in the constant
period test.
4.4

constant period test will be taken according to the following:WELL BEING PUMP DURING PUMPING

5 WELL DEVELOPMENT
After drilling completion and immediately after gravel pack installation
well development will be carried out, if considered necessary, by using
air lift system to arrange the gravel pack to increase the well capacity
by creating a high permeable envelope around the well.

6 WATER SAMPLING AND TESTING

Water samples will be taken out from the wells for quality testing in
accordance to BS ISO 5667-1993 part 11.
The sample shall be taken after purging the well three times its volume.
Care will be taken to avoid any contamination to the sample.
The water samples shall be stored in ice box and transported to the
laboratory.
