hen it comes to winter car care, many

motorists think of antifreeze and batteries,
but vehicles need extra attention when temperatures drop below zero. These six quick tips will
help your vehicle perform at its best during cold
weather months.
1) Keep the gas tank at least half full; this decreases
the chance of moisture forming in the gas lines and
possibly freezing.
2) Check the tire pressure, including the spare, as
tires can lose pressure when temperatures drop.
Consider special tires if snow and ice are a problem in
your area.

Girls Gain Self-Esteem

The Boys & Girls Club of Vineland recently
welcomed a guest speaker to its SMART Girls
Program. Ms. Valicia Finch (pictured, center)
spoke to the girls about various life skills
issues including reaching their full potential.
Ms. Finch discussed her own journey in life and
administered a test for the girls to complete in
order to discover where their potential lies, and
how they can prepare for the future. The Club's
SMART Girls Program is a health, fitness, prevention/education and self-esteem enhancement
program for girls with modules for girls ages 8-12 years and girls ages 13-17 years. In 2014, support for the program was provided by a Cumberland County/JJC Community Partnership grant.

Daffodils in the Spring

Rutgers Master Gardeners of
Cumberland County completed a twoyear project planting 500 Ice Folly
daffodils throughout the Old Broad
Street Cemetery in Bridgeton. What a
glorious display awaits us this spring!
In addition, five trees, four shrubs,
and 30 daylilies were planted.
Master Gardener Jane Hankins
heads the Broad Street Cemetery
Project, and she is presently preparing the paperwork for a grant to
plant colorful shrubs throughout this
historic cemetery. Any nursery interested in donating shrubs for this endeavor can contact Jane Hankins or Pam
Burton at 856-451-2800, ext. 4. Anyone interested in learning more about Master
Gardeners should contact Pam Burton at the number provided.

Jim Cawley has been named president and chief executive officer of
United Way of Greater Philadelphia
and Southern New Jersey (UWGPSNJ), effective February 9. The
announcement was made by Lon
Greenberg, chairman, UGI
Corporation/AmeriGas and chair of
UWGPSNJs regional Board of
Directors, following a six-month
national search.
Cawley joins UWGPSNJ upon ending his term of office as the 32nd
Lieutenant Governor of the
Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. As
president and CEO, Cawley will lead
the organizations work to improve
Education, Income and Health for the
regions most vulnerable populations,
while also strengthening the regional
safety net. Through the Impact Fund, UWGPSNJ works to ensure children start
kindergarten ready to learn; students read at grade level by the end of third
grade; youth graduate from high school ready for college and career; households
have the income and assets necessary to be financially stable and economically
independent; and that individuals and families have access to resources they
need to lead healthy lives and have their basic needs met.
In naming Cawley to this critical role, Greenberg stated that UWGPSNJs
regional Board of Directors is confident Jim possesses both the leadership skills
and public service experience required to guide an organization whose investments support thousands of individuals and families in nine counties across
southeastern Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey.
The Board was determined to identify a leader who demonstrated a commitment to serving the community and carrying out our mission, and who possessed the ability to build relationships, engender trust in the community and
generate results. We considered a wide cross section of candidates, and Jim was
the clear choice, says Greenberg. He has spent the majority of his career in the
service of others, both regionally and nationally, developing productive relationships and leading large groups of constituents to success. As lieutenant governor,
he also has a unique understanding of how United Ways Impact areas connect,
and how strategic improvements in Education, Income and Health can lift the
entire region.
Mindy Holman, incoming chair of the regional Board of Directors and president and CEO of Holman Automotive Group, echoed Greenbergs comments. I
look forward to working alongside Jim; his enthusiasm for the work and his mix
of public and private sector experience will allow him to lead our regional team
effectively and enhance our ability to drive greater Impact for those in need,
from Chester County to Cape May, says Holman.
A native of Levittown, Pa., Cawley earned a bachelors degree in political science and a law degree from Temple University. He resides in Wrightstown, Bucks
County with his wife Suzanne and their son Nicky. Cawley succeeds Tony Conti,
former managing partner of PwC Philadelphia, who served as volunteer interim
president and CEO since June.

Curried Chicken Salad With

Roasted Carrots

o matter what we ate all day,

Mom always made sure that we
had a balanced dinner and insisted that we include a big salad every night.
Linda and I would take turns peeling the
carrots and slicing the celery and the only
lettuce available back then was iceberg.
Mom made her own dressing concoction
of oil and red wine vinegar with a shot of
Hellmanns Mayonnaisewe just loved it!
I find myself craving a salad all winter
and have developed more sophisticated
tastes than when we were young. I think
nothing of adding nuts and berries to my
spring mix salad, or lentils or cannolini
beans to my arugula salad. If I ever want
to be nostalgic, I go for the Iceberg
Wedge Salad with blue cheese dressing,
topped with crumbled bacon; it just cant
be beat!
The word salad can mean many things,
but the one thing that gives it that designation is having a dressing. My absolute
favorite for a winter lunch is this Curried
Chicken Salad with Roasted Carrots. It is
spicy and full of flavor. Serve in it a lettuce
cup or on a whole grain ciabata roll. Great
on a winters day!

Are you ready to do something about knee pain? At Inspiras free
joint pain seminar, learn how custom knee replacement can reduce
pain and increase mobility without pills, injections or braces.

Compared to off-the-shelf joint replacements, the custom knee

results in more natural movement. And for some, it can reduce risk
and recovery time since it requires removing less healthy tissue.

Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Seth Silver will explain the revolutionary

surgical advancement of custom knee replacement. After mapping
the natural knee structure with digital imaging, a precision knee is
carefully crafted to match each patients unique anatomy.

If youre a candidate Dr. Silver and his team can make the dream
of less pain and more mobility reality.

ave you seen those commercials for one of the internet

companies (Im not naming
them and giving them more
publicity) where they refer to their competitors as half-fast.
Its a kind of sneaky, snarky double
entendre. Everybody knows what theyre
really calling their competitors. But it also
reminded me of something.
My Dad worked as a machine repairman
for Chrysler at a plant where they used
powdered metal.
Dad could repair anything but it usually
involved looking like a coalminer at the end
of the workday.
They had showers and lockers at the
plant and Dad would clean up and change
every day before he came home.
But the rule at home was straight to the
basement for another shower and another
change of clothes before he was allowed
upstairs.
When he retired early (at 59 because
hed invested wisely), he became very fashion conscious.
There wasnt a week that went by that
he didnt treat himself to a new article of
clothing.
One year, after Mom had passed, I went
home for a visit. He had given up driving
but still had a car and asked if I would take
him clothes shopping,
Now, I had spent just about my whole
working life in a suit and tie and went in
exactly the opposite direction when I
retired. No suits for me!
In fact, if it werent or my lovely wife, Id
probably have spent the rest of my life in
sweats. But I digress.
I took Dad to the local mall where we
went to a mens shop that he frequented.
The salesman knew him and was quick
to point out new items he might like.
The salesman seemed particularly excited about some new suspenders he thought
Dad would like.
I had always thought of suspenders as a
novelty item: I had one pair that I wore
with my one and only Saks Fifth Avenue
three-piece suit.
When Dad tried a few on I realized that
he was wearing a belt and suspenders.

Then I realized that he had been doing

so for a number of years: It just hadnt registered.
He bought a couple of pair (I have one
of them hanging in my closet) and on the
ride home I asked him how come a belt and
suspenders.
He said the reason was that as he got
older he became half-fast (thats not exactly
what he said but if its okay for prime time
TV it should be good enough for a family
newspaper).
The belt, he said, was for show and the
suspenders were for go.
He said that, all things considered, he
was okay with the things hed lost to the
advances of agehis hearing, his reflexes,
some strength and mobility and a certain
amount of hair.
He could get around those losses, he said,
with a little help from science and technology. The suspenders, he added, were just a
way of coping with his new half-fast body.
And it was, he warned, something I
could look forward to. As usual, Dad was
right on the money. I just hadnt thought
about it.
I dug that pair mentioned earlier out of
the closet but discovered that they are the
fancy button kind and wont work with
jeans and/or sweats. Makes me wish Id put
them on my Christmas wish listthe alligator clip kind that I can wear with jeans and
sweats, that is.
A few years ago I realized that I had
reached that same milestone as my Dad: I
dont need anything. So I told them just get
me books and my favorite foods.
Being good children and grandchildren,
they pretty much complied with my
request. To the point that Im still munching my way through my holiday plunder.
The presents Im trying to decide what
to do with are the extra five to 10 pounds
that Ive accumulated as a result of all that
gifting.
None of it has ended up where it would
be useful and I find myselfnot dumb, perfect, or smartbut definitely half-fast.
Hope you and yours had a very happy
and healthy holiday season. Thanks for the
fruitcake suggestions and particularly the
homemade one that was dropped off. I

3) Have the exhaust system checked for
carbon monoxide leaks, which can be especially dangerous during cold weather driving
when windows are closed.
4) If youre not trying to defrost the windshield or warm the interior, modern cars are
ready to be driven right away. Idling longer
than 30 seconds in most cases is unnecessary
for the sake of warming up the engine. The
best way to warm up your car is to drive gently at the start.
5) Change to low-viscosity oil in winter as
it will flow more easily between moving parts
when it is cold. Drivers in sub-zero temperatures should drop their oil weight from 10-

W30 to 5-W30 as thickened oil can make it

hard to start the car.
6) Consider using cold weather washer
fluid and special winter windshield blades if
you live in a place with especially harsh winter conditions.
Sub-zero temperatures can have a real
impact on your vehicle. Winter magnifies
existing problems such as pings, hard starts,
sluggish performance and rough idling, and
very cold temperatures reduce battery power.
If you havent had your vehicle checked
recently, a thorough vehicle inspection is a
good idea so you can avoid the aggravation
and unexpected cost of a breakdown in freezing weather.

Foschi suggests these tips for keeping your
car running smoothly during the winter season:
The cooling system should be flushed and
refilled as recommended. A 50/50 mix of
antifreeze and water is usually advised.
Have your battery checked. The only accurate way to detect a weak battery is with professional equipment.
The transmission is often neglected until a
major failure. Routine checks and fluid changes
at prescribed intervals can prevent very costly
repairs.
Always carry an emergency kit with you
extra gloves, boots, blankets, flares, a small shovel and sand or kitty litter, tire chains, a flashlight
and extra batteries, and a cell phone and extra
charger. Put a few high-energy snacks in your

Tips for Long-Distance Winter Trips

(at Elm-next to the Neptune Restaurant)

Source: AAA
Watch weather reports prior to a long-distance drive or before driving in isolated
areas. Delay trips when especially bad weather is expected. If you must leave, let
others know your route, destination and estimated time of arrival.
Always make sure your vehicle is in peak operating condition.
Keep at least half a tank of gasoline in your vehicle at all times.
Pack a cellular telephone with your local AAAs telephone number, plus blankets,
gloves, hats, food, water and any needed medication in your vehicle.
If you become snow-bound, stay with your vehicle. It provides temporary shelter
and makes it easier for rescuers to locate you. Dont try to walk in a severe storm.
Its easy to lose sight of your vehicle in blowing snow and become lost.
Dont over exert yourself if you try to push or dig your vehicle out of the snow.
Tie a brightly colored cloth to the antenna or place a cloth at the top of a rolled
up window to signal distress. At night, keep the dome light on if possible. It only
uses a small amount of electricity and will make it easier for rescuers to find you.
Make sure the exhaust pipe isnt clogged with snow, ice or mud. A blocked
exhaust could cause deadly carbon monoxide gas to leak into the passenger compartment with the engine running.
Use whatever is available to insulate your body from the cold. This could include
floor mats, newspapers or paper maps.

to regain traction and avoid skids. It takes so
much longer to slow down on icy snowy roads,
so take your time to brake sooner and slower
than usual.
You can AVOID being at the Body Shop if
you make sure that your car is prepared for the
winter snowy roads. You gotta know your brakes
when it comes to the snow in winter. Whether
you have anti-lock brakes or not, the best way
to stop is threshold breaking, keeping the heel
of your foot on the floor and use the ball of
your foot to apply firm, steady pressure on the
brake pedal.
And if the weather is so bad, you may just
want to stay home, he advises.

Winter Driving Tips

Source: AAA
Avoid driving while youre fatigued.
Getting the proper amount of rest
before taking on winter weather
tasks reduces driving risks.
Never warm up a vehicle in an
enclosed area, such as a garage.
Make certain your tires are properly inflated.
Never mix radial tires with other
tire types.
Keep your gas tank at least half
full to avoid gas line freeze-up.
If possible, avoid using your parking brake in cold, rainy and snowy
weather.
Do not use cruise control when
driving on any slippery surface (wet,
ice, sand).
Always look and steer where you
want to go.
Use your seat belt every time you
get into your vehicle.

Tips for Driving in the Snow

THE 2015 TRX 90X

Source: AAA
Accelerate and decelerate slowly. Applying the gas slowly to accelerate is the
best method for regaining traction and avoiding skids. Dont try to get moving in a
hurry. And take time to slow down for a stoplight. Remember: It takes longer to
slow down on icy roads.
Drive slowly. Everything takes longer on snow-covered roads. Accelerating, stopping, turningnothing happens as quickly as on dry pavement. Give yourself time
to maneuver by driving slowly.
The normal dry pavement following distance of three to four seconds should be
increased to eight to ten seconds. This increased margin of safety will provide the
longer distance needed if you have to stop.
Know your brakes. Whether you have antilock brakes or not, the best way to stop
is threshold breaking. Keep the heel of your foot on the floor and use the ball of
your foot to apply firm, steady pressure on the brake pedal.
Dont stop if you can avoid it. Theres a big difference in the amount of inertia it
takes to start moving from a full stop versus how much it takes to get moving
while still rolling. If you can slow down enough to keep rolling until a traffic light
changes, do it.
Dont power up hills. Applying extra gas on snow-covered roads just starts your
wheels spinning. Try to get a little inertia going before you reach the hill and let
that inertia carry you to the top. As you reach the crest of the hill, reduce your
speed and proceed down hill as slowly as possible.
Dont stop going up a hill. Theres nothing worse than trying to get moving up a hill
on an icy road. Get some inertia going on a flat roadway before you take on the hill.
Stay home. If you really dont have to go out, dont. Even if you can drive well in
the snow, not everyone else can. Dont tempt fate: If you dont have somewhere
you have to be, watch the snow from indoors.

SOUTH JERSEY MOTOR TRENDS:

Carlos Martinez has 15 years experience in serving South Jersey with his Miles of Smiles and
customer satisfaction, He just opened his business on 2059 South Delsea Drive in Vineland
(ww.sjmotortrends.com). Carlos advises that preowned vehicles, even late model cars, are still the
least expensive way to go, rather than spending
so much on repairs and maintenance. New cars
come with warranties and routine services. The
biggest expense usually happens after the warranty has run out. The kicker is that if you opt to
purchase a pre-owned car, you can save 30 to 40

percent over new.

Depreciation: A major disadvantage of buying a new car is its rapid depreciation. Models
typically lose about 47 percent of their value in
the first three years, compared with 24 percent
over the next three. But this varies greatly
among models.
Reliability. One thing that has made used cars
more appealing is their improved reliability.
Years ago, rust and exhaust-system problems
were common, but thats no longer the case, and
major engine and transmission problems have
also decreased, making late-model used vehicles
far less of a risk. When properly maintained,
todays vehicles should easily surpass 200,000
miles without a major overhaul, and many could
reach over that.
Carlos has many low-maintenance pre-owned
vehicles, all reconditioned.
He invites the community to bring in their
W2 and he will get their taxes done and they can
drive out with a new car.
After you leave my dealership, he says, you
will have smiles for miles. I

District Chef Promotes Healthy Eating at Winslow

{ 16 } the grapevine | JANUARY 21, 2015

Mark Daino, head chef for

the Vineland Public Schools
food service provider, Sodexo,
was a guest in the fifth grade
classroom of Deborah McClain
at Winslow Elementary School
recently.
Daino was invited to speak to
the students about making
healthy eating choices, according
to Purvesh Patel, Sodexo's food
service Director in Vineland.
The Sodexo visits coincide
with a national campaign, supported by the school district, to teach children healthy eating habits, and curb
what have been recent, dramatic increases in childhood obesity.
Daino talked to the children about the importance of healthy snacks and limiting high-fat, high-sugar choices.
"Our goal is to teach children to make choices that will help them develop
eating habits that will help them maintain a healthy weight through adulthood,"
said Patel.
Experts also stress that parents should model these behaviors, ensuring children will avoid obesity and grow at a normal rate.
Some of the most important aspects of healthy eating are portion control and
cutting down on how much fat your child eats. Simple ways to reduce fat intake
in your child's diet and promote a healthy weight include serving:
. Low-fat or nonfat dairy products
. Poultry without skin
. Lean cuts of meats
. Whole grain breads and cereals
. Healthy snacks such as fruit and veggies
For more information on the Sodexo program, or to schedule a school visit,
contact Patel at 856-794-6700, ext. 2200 or via email at PPatel@vineland.org

As part of the school-wide theme this year, St. Mary School students, faculty
and families are creating waves of change daily. The schools theme is Be Like
WaterCreate a Wave of Change. The banner displayed in the photograph was
created to showcase the many ways our small acts of kindness, generosity and
spirituality are effecting change in the world for the better of all. Each time a
wave is completed it is recorded and hung on the banner.
Since September the following waves have been accomplished:
1. The St. Mary School Faith, Family Fun Committee organized a Spread the
Magic event on September 26 and raised $648.00 for Spread the Magic Foundation.
2. On that same night, the Faith, Family Fun group set up an Alexs Lemonade
stand and raised $557.85 for Alex's Lemonade.
3. On October 17, a dress down day was held and $243.00 was raised for Light
the Night Cancer Foundation.
4. On October 24, Student Council held a dress down day and donated
$227.00 for Breast Cancer Awareness.
5. On October 30, the 7th and 8th Grade attended a Friendship Retreat. The
retreat was directed by the Sisters of St. Lucy Filippini at St. Anthony of Padua
Church in Hammonton, NJ.
6. On October 31, classroom buddies from 7th and 1st grade made fall crafts
for Bishop McCarthy residents and the 6th and 8th grade students visited their
classroom buddies in Kindergarten and 2nd to help them make a take home craft.
7. On October 31, the National Junior Honor Society sold and delivered
Spookables (a candy treat with message) to all students and raised $362.85
for their annual donation to charity. NJHS raises money all year and votes as a
group on the charity to donate to at the end of the year.
8. Prayers are a very important part of our lives and St. Mary School in honor
of Mary, prayed the rosary for the entire month of October.
9. On November 14 and 15 students in the drama department performed
School House Rock which showcased the importance of education to a packed
audience each night.
10. From November 16 to 21, St. Mary School collected 1,275 lbs. of gently
used clothing and donated to charity overseas.
11. For Thanksgiving, all students donated canned goods to the St. Vincent
DePaul Center.
12. On December 10, the School launched its 1:1 Chromebook Initiative for all middle school students. One hundred Chromebooks replaced all students textbooks.

VHS Female Athletes Win State Titles

After three
months as
Vineland Public
Schools Assistant
Superintendent for
Administration,
John Frangipani is
settled into his
new role, providing services for
students and their
families, principals
and the central
office administrative team.
Frangipani, whose
career has
spanned three
decades, works
closely with the
central office team
that includes Dr. Mary Gruccio, Superintendent, Nathan Frey, the Assistant
Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, Dr. Joseph Rossi, Executive
Director of Human Resources, and the board. Frangipani's role designates him as
an advocate for parents, teachers, principals and community members, allowing
them to communicate with central administration.
Frangipani has worked as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, assistant
superintendent and Chief of Operations in Philadelphia for 33 years, managing
an academic division of 30 schools in a district with more than 240 schools and
more than 131,000 students.
Frangipani began his career as an industrial arts teacher in the Philadelphia
school system, where he remained for approximately 15 years. After obtaining
certification, he moved on to become an assistant principal at a high school in
Philadelphia, and then principal at a middle school. After a promotion to
Assistant Superintendent, Frangipani found himself overseeing 30 schools in
south and southwest Philadelphia. His final role in the Philadelphia school system included a six-year term as Chief of Operations, where he oversaw all the
non-instructional operations within the district, including school security, grants,
student registration, and more.
Frangipani is therefore familiar with many of the difficulties that arise in
Vineland, a community with an urban center, suburban area and rural perimeter.
For two years prior to coming to Vineland, Frangipani was the principal and
Chief Executive Officer of City Invincible in Camden, a charter school. Now in
Vineland, Frangipani is gearing up to help the district face the usual trials of
managing more than a dozen schools and 10,000 plus students.
Frangipani graduated from Temple University with a bachelor of science
degree in Industrial Education. From there, he moved on to Rowan University,
where he obtained his master's degree in Education Technology. Shortly following his master's, Frangipani obtained his Principal's Certification from Arcadia
University and his Superintendent Certificate of Eligibility from Widener
University. Frangipani, who makes his home in Blackwood, has been married to
his wife, Mimi, for 33 years and has two grown sons.

I News in Brief
Hood-Stayz, The Solution,
Launched Locally
The secret to a great invention is
necessity. That is what Lisa Levari has
heard many times throughout her life. Its
turned out, that is exactly the case with
the invention of Hood-Stayz.
A few years ago, Lisa was shoveling
snow during a veritable blizzard. As she
was shoveling, her hood kept falling down
in front of her face blocking her vision.
Frustrated after repeated attempts to position the edge so that she could actually

see what she was doing, Lisa resolved to

find a real solution.
Lisas first thought was to sew a back
section of her hood together to make it
shorter but realized she would then have
her face exposed. At that point, the HoodStayz idea was born! Lisa created one that
evening and it turned out to be the perfect
solution, as she discovered during Round
2 of shoveling.
Since that time, Lisa has used HoodStayz in her other jackets and coats.
However, circumstances being what they
are, she only recently decided to bring her
solution to the floppy edged hood to
others. Hood-Stayz is now also Patent
Pending.

Lisa is happy to be the cause of a solution to an issue that is not only annoying
but is also downright dangerous in regards
to obstructing a pedestrians vision while
crossing a street or an outdoor workers
vision while trying to do a job.
Even more heartening, and humbling
to Lisa, she was informed Hood-Stayz is
also a wonderful solution for folks who
are developmentally or physically challenged and have difficulty keeping a hood
from drooping down and blocking their
vision while outdoors or even while
indoors and trying to keep warm.
I hope everyone will find Hood-Stayz
to be a solution to a little part of their
life!, said Lisa.

Hood-Stayz is available locally, at

LaTorre Hardware, 1607 S. Delsea Dr.,
Vineland. Or online at www.HoodStayz.com. For an Instructional video, go
to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pC6TYh4bMw

lence and inflicting bruises and, in one

instance, a broken nose.
The police, including those stationed at
Laurel and Commerce streets, were slow
in responding, something some Bridgeton
residents felt turned the event into a riot
with victims running into stores for protection and the mob of teens chasing them.
The police eventually took action, arresting 12 participants and marching them to
City Hall, which was then located on East
Commerce and Orange streets, but the
mob followed, applying its hat-destroying
techniques on the flowerbeds, fences and
screen door of the municipal building. It
took 20 firemen deputized as special officers to disperse the mob with fire hoses.
Residents then took up the cause,
according to Chestnut. He reports that as
the evening wore on, a number of
Bridgeton residents vowed to wear straw
hats and armed themselves should anyone
challenge their right to do so. But the riot
had subsided and the fingerpointing had
begun. Some attributed the incident to the
Crescent Canoe Club, but its members had
been ordered by its president earlier that
evening to confine any destruction of
straw hats to those of fellow club associates. Various individuals not affiliated
with the club were also blamed for starting the riot. And the police were criticized
for not responding immediately.
Bridgeton Mayor George Hampton met
with the 12 individuals who had been
charged with disorderly conduct. When he
asked if they were guilty, only four said
they were. A court hearing/sentencing was
held, by which time three more participants were charged. They were all found
guilty and fined $10 per person, a hefty fee
for the time. Hampton said he recognized
the incident had started as a prank and
flew out of control but proclaimed that the
youth had no business in starting it.
Ten years later, New York would experience what sources claim was the worst
incident of straw hat snatching, with the
mobs size reaching 1,000. Two years after
that, the ritual reached its most frightening
moment when a New York man was killed
for wearing a straw hat after September 15.
Its too bad no one realized that fashion
already comes with a price tag. I

ashion statements arent usually

known for provoking violence,
yet thats exactly what happened
at the turn of the 20th century.
In 1912, fashion vigilantes suddenly
appeared throughout the country to
uphold the good taste of seasonal apparel
that had been so brazenly violated in
recent years. And this area was no exception to the trend.
Tradition once proclaimed that men
could wear straw hats throughout the summer months but needed to relinquish them
in favor of felt hats upon the arrival of
September 16. The deadline became sacrosanct, particularly among the adolescents
of the country who seemed to use it as justification for harassing fellow citizens. If
you were a male sporting a straw hat after
September 15 in a city with self-appointed
fashion police, you risked involvement in
an altercation of some sort. Such was the
case in Bridgeton on September 16, 1912.
Bill Chestnuts South Jersey Magazine
article, Bridgetons Straw Hat Riot of
1912, provides a detailed account of what
occurred when local men defied tradition.
Chestnut reports that Bridgetons fashion
vigilantes were comprised largely of college students who prowled the streets in
search of violators. They would snatch
and destroy the straw hat of any man seen
wearing one.
Apparently, there were a number of
straw hats that had not yet been placed in
storage for the fall and winter seasons by 7
p.m. on September 16. Blatantly out-ofseason, they were paraded around town
and in view of the restless youth offended
by such a troubling site. The teens did not
discriminate between men strolling the
streets alone or those accompanied by a
female companionall straw hat offenders in the vicinity of Laurel and
Commerce Streets were attacked.
The ritual consisted of grabbing the hat
from the victims head and then crushing
the offensive apparel while its owner
watched. But in certain instances, the
owner of the straw hat saw fit to alter the
process by fighting back and even landing
a few blows on the attackers. The youthful
mob seemed to resent such off-script
moments, retaliating with their own vio-

he NJ 350 Pop Up we had downtown

only lasted four days but the positive
vibrations continue to live on. We
continue to get phone calls, visits, and emails from people who loved all the merchandise we had New Jersey and Vineland
merchandisebooks, postcards, clothing,
and other great things. Well, your chance to
continue buying those things didnt die with
the end the Pop-Up Store. We will continue
to carry a supply of merchandise downtown
on an ongoing basis.
Main Street New Jersey didnt want to
see the beautiful IKEA display fixtures that
graced the Pop-Up Stores go to waste. So,
they had the localities that hosted Pop-Up
Stores apply to keep themfor free. All we
had to do was to tell how we were going to
use themin keeping with the Pop-Up Store
concept. The locality to submit the best plan
would win. AND MAIN STREET
VINELAND WON!!
So, on January 27, well have the honor of
having the fixtures that graced the Pop-Up
Stores come back to Vineland permanently
and well again be selling the merchandise
about which youve been asking.
While were still working on the plan for
this, I can tell you some things. Id like to see
the Main Street Vineland office be a real visitor center for out-of-towners wanting more
information about our area, as well as
Vineland residents who want information
about their city, and businesses that need

assistance. Part of that plan is to have merchandise that these people can buy. It will be
a nucleus of activity and resources in our
downtown.
I want to have a good supply of this merchandise available for sale in Landis
MarketPlacea hub of activity boasting an
abundance of foot traffic. This will make the
market still another destination for this merchandisea win-win situation all around.
Youll be reading more details about this
in the coming weeks, but Im so excited that
I wanted to share the preliminary information about this right away. We all have every
reason to be proud of what we have accomplished and to see our tremendous achievements being recognized and noticed by Main
Street New Jersey and by cities and towns
throughout the state.

Make downtown Vineland your destination for shopping, entertainment, and fun all

Sherman Ave. and College Dr., Vineland. 7:30 p.m. Since its three-year run on

objects (such as toilet paper) and colorful abstract shapes and forms, like the
famous Clay Masks, Slinky Man and Giant Hands, spring to life. By creating a playful yet compelling experience through the inventive use of shadow, light and the
creative manipulation of objects, the troupe offers timeless insight on the human
condition. The result is a stunning spectacle of visual theatre that transcends cultural barriers and sparks the imagination. Tickets $45 and $40, $35 for ages 65+
